Perdita searched the text for a map of the region but could not find one. The group looked through the secret opening at the clawed footed chest with the skeleton body hanging out of it, half in and half out, still in the exact position it had died in. The group looked at each other, wondering who would be the first to go inside.

Using his ability to see in the dark, Uruk made his way into the secret chamber. Trying not to touch anything he first looked at the books on the shelves trying to get a feel for what they were by the wording on the spines. They looked to be books on fiend-summoning rituals and the necromantic rituals of a cult called the Priests of Osybus from his cursory inspection of the titles. He then moved over to the half open chest with the skeleton caught inside. Without touching he crouched down and looked underneath and around as best as possible. The skeleton had met its fate from a trap as three darts were still stuck in the front of the man's chest through the rotting leather armor.

Clutched in the skeleton’s left hand is a rolled up letter bearing a wax seal with what looks to be a "Z" impressed into it. The seal has not been broken so you can only assume that it came from the chest before the trap fired and killed the thief. Carefully sliding the parchment out of the skeletons grasp Uruk wondered what else was in the chest below the skeleton but he dared not move it yet. With the paper removed Uruk broke the wax seal on the letter and unrolled it and began to read it.

Uruk murmurs to himself as he read over the letter before passing it on to the next closest person who shows interest, Charming. Looks like we have a full on cult that used this house.

Looking back at the skeleton Uruk contemplates his next steps for a moment before decidedly move forward, throwing open the lid, and pulling the skeleton out and looking inside...

Mechanics:
To the extent that he can hold the pile of clothing and bones in front of him as a shield he will try to open the lid with one hand and keep the dead body (as it were) between him and the chest until the box is open completely then he will toss is aside.

Uruk pulled the skeleton carefully to the side and opened the chest further and began to look through it's contents...

The chest contains three blank books with black leather covers that look to be valuable, three spell scrolls (bless, protection from poison, and spiritual weapon), the deed to the house, the deed to a windmill, and a signed will.

The will is signed by Gustav and Elisabeth Durst and bequeathes the house, the windmill, and all other family property to Rosavalda and Thornboldt Durst in the event of their parents’ deaths.

Perdita Imogen moves to I 2, keeping the books she had taken from the more public of libraries, to begin a more thorough examination of the more private library.

"May I see the letter from that 'Strahd' gentleman, Uruk?"

Nilan went to grab up the items but Uruk was already packing them into his pack. Nilan turned and headed up the stairs leaving the remainder on this floor in complete darkness.

As Nilan makes his way up the spiral staircase the house quickly loses its luster, the rich paneling quickly ages, the stairway and house literally shrink around him revealing its true nature as the illusionary magic of the two floors below are stripped away....

Now dusty and drafty, everything within this floor is old and draped in cobwebs, and the floorboards now groan underfoot. As Nilan ascends the staircase he comes to a dusty balcony with a suit of black plate armor standing against one wall, draped in cobwebs.

Unlit oil lamps are mounted on the oak-paneled walls, which are carved with woodland scenes of trees, falling leaves, and tiny critters.

Meanwhile Perdita moves into the hidden chamber and begins a brief catalog of the books. This she found a daunting task. It would take over an hour to catalog just the names and subject of the main books.

When Nilan left and went upstairs, Hack found himself to be in complete darkness and could no longer see anything around him.

Perdita Imogen browses and catalogs, peruses and earmarks as she casually talks to the other scholar.

"This land to which we've been whisked away -- have you heard of anything like it? It seems a typical Prime Material Plane except for the feeling of, I don't know, dread -- or wrongness -- that seems to permeate the very air around us.

"Not to mention the fog -- a mist-like fog that brought us here and devoured the children. What do you think of this?"

Hack bumbled around in the dark as he chased after the fading light and up the stairs to catch up with Nilan. A moment later Uruk was coming up the stairs behind him.

As Perdita continued to catalog the books with the help of Illufaus, she caught something amiss. Flipping back through a couple of books, they seemed to contradict themselves in content, picking up a few more and asking for Illufaus to do the same, it only confirmed her findings. The rituals are bogus, the books were bogus, they were nothing more than show. The rituals contained a lot of chanting and eye candy for an observer but nothing in them would summon a normal creature, must less a devil or fiend. The other books that had necromantic rituals for summoning the dead was also bogus, looking more like rituals for parlor tricks to fool someone into believing you were doing such when really it was just smoke and mirrors.

As Hack moved past Nilan and onto the balcony properly and moved by the black suit of armor toward the southern doors, the armor suddenly animated and breaking free of the cobwebs that draped it swung two armored fist at Hack as he passed. The first fist caught Hack right across the jaw but as the second attack came he was more prepared and shifted out of the way of the blow.

Uruk comes up behind Nilan and blanches at the sight of the armor. Not wanting to risk further harm by lobbing magic right at Hack, Uruk uses his focus to summon missiles of pure magic... or so he thought. Instead of the normal orbs of force that Uruk expected, three glowing green fangs shot forth from his fingertips and zoomed to his target, zipping around the animated armor once and then each fang tearing into the armor leaving a hole in the metal plates in its wake as errie green light flowed out from inside the creature where the holes were.

Hack brings his battle axes to bear on the animated armor. Swinging one at the creatures head and the other at its midsection. The animated armor turned sideways and twisted which caused both axes to slice through nothing but air.

Nilan makes a gesture at the Armor. A bolt of green fire streaks from his outstretched staff to slam into the Animated Armor. A huge shower of green sparks and the smell of scorched metal now covered the balcony. The warped and twisted plates of the armor still holding together as they continued to move.

Hearing the siren call from her new allies in this odd place, Perdita Imogen looks at Illufus in a moment of frozen tableau and worry -- then rushes toward the stairs, putting the pseudo-arcane texts on the edge of her mind and her glaive on the edge of her fingertips. The stairs loomed in front of her.... she hoped she would be in time.

The animated armor again struck out at Hack, the first metal fist caught him on the chin and sent the man to the ground in a knockout blow. The armor then moved over to where Nilan was standing at the top of the stairs and slammed its fist down on top of the mans head causing his knees to buckle as the blood trickled down his face but somehow he managed to hold on to the balcony railing and not go down.

Uruk balks at the sudden explosion of violence, Hack's apparent injury and the strange change in his magic. Frowning to himself the wizard once more chooses to unleash the last of his more powerful spells as he moves to retreat down the steps, the three sets of glowing green teeth fly forth from his hand once again and chew into the animated armor as bits and pieces go flying from the thing before them but it did not stop its attack as Uruk headed down the stairs. As he exited the stairs on the second floor in front of Perdita.

Hacks body convulsed upon the floor where he had fallen.

Nilan withdraws from the Animated Armor and joins the others on the second floor.

Perdita moves past her two companions as she moves up the stairs from wince they came, seeing the fallen body of Hack up on the stairs she readied her Glaive but was not yet in range so she readied her attack if the thing came down the stairs. She did not have to wait long as it moved down the stairs in her direction and she attacked. Striking out with her Glaive upon the stairwell was awkward and the animated armor moved out of the way.

The Animated Armor then sent its armored fist flying in her direction. The first swing of its arm Perdita ducked and on the second she parried the gloved fist away with her Glaive.

"I can't use my glaive with you right behind me, "Dying Star"; back up or this thing is going pummel me while I'm completely helpless!

Sandwiched between the haunted construct and her ally, unable to strike at the monster with her weapon because Illufaus is pressing behind her, Perdita Imogen waits until the "Dying Star" falls back before stepping back and striking:

"Hack, we're not going to leave without you; hang in there and hopefully this tin-man will follow us, giving you time to get your bearings."

mechanics:
Perdita Imogen waits until Illufaus moves out of the way, then backs up to thrust with her glaive -- and continues moving downstairs (to J-10), hoping the haunted construct follows her. She keeps an eye on the Animated Armor and if it goes back p for Hack she will follow it in order to help.

Uruk takes the moment to look over Nilan. The wizard considers the stair way and thinks it unwise to charge up them with so many others in the way. He opts instead to simply wait and listen...

Hack pulls himself up from the floor and staggered north with his injuries. Reaching the north set of double door he pushed them open and stepped inside trying to get as far away from the animated armor as possible....

The double doors to this room have dusty panes of stained glass set into them. Designs in the glass resemble windmills. The dusty, cobweb-filled master bedroom has burgundy drapes covering the windows. Furnishings include a four-poster bed with embroidered curtains and tattered gossamer veils, a matching pair of wardrobes, a vanity with a wood-framed mirror and jewelry box, and a padded chair. A rotting tiger-skin rug lies on the floor in front of the fireplace, which has a dust-covered portrait of Gustav and Elisabeth Durst hanging above it. A web-filled parlor in the southwest corner contains a table and two chairs. Resting on the dusty tablecloth is an empty porcelain bowl and a matching jug. A door facing the foot of the bed has a full-length mirror mounted on it. Another wood door exits the room to the north in the cobwebbed filled parlor and a small halfling sized door is set in the southern wall across from it.

Nilan moves back into the stairwell as he stretches out his hand and sends a bolt of green flame flashing forth from his hand at the Suit of Armor, but the hard exterior of its plates protected it from any damage.

Sandwiched between the haunted construct and her ally, Perdita strikes out with her glaive once again at the creature, her weapon penetrating the breastplate of the creature and ripping away a large portion of it, peeling it away as she pulled her weapon free, the suit of armor staggered but did not go down under the blow. Perdita then pulled away heading back downstairs as the suit of armor lashed out at her retreat. Catching the woman right across the chin as she moved away, her jaw hurt but the injury was only minor. Making it back dowstairs she joined Uruk's side.

The animated armor descended downward coming to Illufaus and tried to smash the man to bits with both fist. The first swing Illufaus ducked easily but the second one caught him right in the ribs but appeared to do no damage.

Illufaus draws his other dagger, stabbing towards the armors chinks, trying to work it apart. His first dagger strike just glanced off the hard surface but his second one found purchase between the plates as he began to cut at whatever entity was inside as another huge section of armored plate fell away now filling the hall with the greenish light from within, the light flickered wildly like a candle struggling to hold together in the wind.

Nilan, I know you can't see the map from work but the Animated Armor is almost upon you on the stairwell (Only Illufaus stands between you.) ....You can ask the DM if he'll let you Move down the stairs with the rest of us in your Rd 4 turn (since you can't see the map and may not realize your danger and our tactical plan)

We're downstairs waiting on the Animated Armor to follow us, giving us a chance to attack him outside the 5x5 stairwell -- and giving Hack a chance to put more distance between himself (badly hurt) and the monster.
