Illufaus moved to the intersection and Perdita moved a little past him. To the west Illufaus could see a flight of steps going down and could tell that the chanting was louder in that direction. To the east Perdita could see the winding passage opening up to a chamber ahead and she could see more bones on the floor.

Suddenly the entire passage seemed to shake as the ground around them erupted. Catching theirs bearings as the dust cleared they were surrounded by four humanoid creatures that had long, sharp teeth, and their pallid flesh was stretched tightly over their starved frame.

One of the creature's bit into the warlock tearing away his protective magic. Another one tore into the warlock from another direction, biting the man through his shoulder.

Another creature from a third direction bit into Perdita's chest, ripping away flesh and exposing bone as the woman fell to the ground under the assault.

Religion DC to learn more about this creature.

DC 16:

Devourers of Flesh. Like maggots or carrion beetles, ghouls thrive in places rank with decay and death. A ghoul haunts a place where it can gorge on dead flesh and decomposing organs. When it can't feed on the dead, it pursues living creatures and attempts to make corpses of them. Though they gain no nourishment from the corpses they devour, ghouls are driven by an unending hunger that compels them to consume. A ghoul's undead flesh never rots, and this monster can persist in a crypt or tomb for untold ages without feeding.

Abyssal Origins. Ghouls trace their origins to the Abyss. Doresain, the first of their kind, was an elf worshiper of Orcus. Turning against his own people, he feasted on humanoid flesh to honor the Demon Prince of Undeath. As a reward for his service, Orcus transformed Doresain into the first ghoul. Doresain served Orcus faithfully in the Abyss, creating ghouls from the demon lord's other servants until an incursion by Yeenoghu, the demonic Gnoll Lord, robbed Doresain of his abyssal domain. When Orcus would not intervene on his behalf, Doresain turned to the elf gods for salvation, and they took pity on him and helped him escape certain destruction. Since then, elves have been immune to the ghouls' paralytic touch.

A blast of flame leaps out of Illufaus, striking one of the ghouls and injuring it. Illufaus strikes out at it with one of his daggers, attempting to slash it's throat, while fire leaps from the knife.

"Monsters!" He yells.

Mechanics:
Casting Hellish Rebuke on #1. 2d10 ⇒ (6, 9) = 15 fire damage, half damage on successful Dex save.

If hit again next round, will cast Hellish Rebuke again, on #1 if it is still alive, or whichever one hits him. Next round hellish rebuke damage if needed: 2d10 ⇒ (7, 7) = 14.

Hack moves through the melee as one of the ghouls lashes out at him as he passes but misses. Hack takes a position atop Perdita's fallen form and slashes the ghoul next to him, a dark, foul, black liquid oozes from the cut.

Fire shoots forth from Illufaus's finger and burns the ghoul in front of him. Then Illufaus strikes it with green flame blade as fire leaps to another ghoul and burns it.

Perdita's body convulses on the ground beneath Hack's feet.

One of the ghoul's bite's into Illufaus's neck as it rips a chunk of flesh loose and Illufaus falls to the ground unmoving.

The other ghoul slashes Hack across the arm with his claws.

Another ghoul steps up over the fallen body of Illufaus.

Illufaus laid calmly upon the ground beneath the foul creature.

Uruk moved to just where he could see one of the creatures and cast a fire bolt at it striking its arm as the bolt past it.

Hack marked the ghoul in front of him before lashing out with his battle axe, slicing a viscous gash across the creature as its black intestines spilled out but the creature still stood.

Perdita continued to convulse beneath Hack's feet.

Ghoul #1 slashed across Uruk's shoulder with his claws, opening a wound on the hunchbacked half-orc.

The other two ghouls both slashed at Hack with their claws but neither could connect with the man as he dipped and dodged in the tight confines of the corridor.

Illufaus's body laid calmly on the ground, breathing was normal and seemed to be in no danger of dying.

Uruk launches a firebolt at the ghoul before him but the close quarters causes him to miss his target.

Hack slashes through the air with his battleaxe, cutting ghoul #4 in half. Moving his mark to the ghoul now behind him he slashes out again, cutting deeply into the next ghoul before him.

Perdita's body stopped convulsing for the moment but her wounds still poured and leaked a large amount of blood onto the floor.

The ghoul in front of Uruk lashed out at the hunched man again, claws ripping across his body and back. The half-orc collapsed under the assault of the blow.

The ghoul in front of Hack lashed out with his claws, cutting the man across the face, he felt the paralyzing venom run through his body as his joints froze and he was unable to move.

The ghoul then bit at the paralyzed man but Hack's armor protected him from the bite but he still could not move.

Illufaus stabilized upon the floor.

Uruk's body convulsed in the throes of death.

Perdita gasp and died, her spirit leaving her body.

Then everything went black for Hack as the ghoul bit into him.... and the ghouls feasted on the bodies of the fallen.

All died.

But did they.......


The four deceased? heroes awakened.....

Darkness surrounded them, even darkvision could not penetrate. They felt the presence of each other and of something beyond, in the darkness watching them.

They found themselves stripped of gear and of a physical form at all, floating, in the darkness before they heard words from within the darkness as if the darkness itself was speaking. A chorus of voices, speaking in unison, all around you.

"We are the dark lords, we are the children of the night, we have use of you still."

Silent whispers between the voices.

"Your souls are forever trapped in Barovia and can not leave. You will never see the afterlife, your gods or your families again. Your spirits will wander endlessly across the dark landscape, lost, forever. Unless....."

More silent whispering.

"Since we rule this plane of existence and have use for you.... we offer you the chance to return to the house from which you came."

"We offer you resurrection, but it comes with a price. Those that return from death are not the same, there is a price. Some say it is a curse. Two of you have experienced this already, but know that if you return a second time then more burden will be placed on your shoulders as you will suffer more of the gift."

"What say you? Return or not?"

The ghouls have killed all of you outright, since you are on the Demi-plane of Dread you now have options.

Option #1. If you like you can just make a new 1st level character and we will bring him through the mist and into the game to appear with the group.

Option #2. Resurrection by the Dark Powers of Ravenloft.

If you choose resurrection by the dark powers then you will awaken back in the house with full hitpoints, all your spells and abilities restored as if you had just taken a long rest.

But there is a price to be paid for choosing the resurrection option and it will leave you cursed with a dark gift in someway from the experience. Also you will receive the following PERMANENT story award:

Touched by the Mists. The Dark Powers of Ravenloft raised you from the dead for purposes unknown. The experience has placed a heavy burden on your soul, leaving you tainted by evil. Now cats hiss as you approach and milk sours at your touch. You detect as an evil undead to the detect evil and good spell.

As Hack agreed to the offer of the Dark Lords, he suddenly awoke in the main room of the first floor of the house, a blazing fire burned in the hearth. Checking over himself he found no wounds and his equipment and armor undamaged.

Perdita was the next to agree and awoke next to Hack on the first floor by the fire, as she awoke and checked herself over she noticed that strange words now appear on her skin as bloody scars written in a beautiful cursive script. Other than the strange writting she seems to be whole.

Dark Gift #4
At night, you can spend 1 hit die to move through solid objects as though they were difficult terrain. If you end your turn inside an object you will take (1d10) force damage. Hack counts as an undead creature for the purpose of spells and effects such as turn undead.

The Dark Powers of Ravenloft raised you from the dead for purposes unknown. The experience has placed a heavy burden on your soul, leaving you tainted by evil. Now cats hiss as you approach and milk sours at your touch. You detect as an evil undead to the detect evil and good spell.

Strange words appear on Perdita's skin as bloody scars written in a beautiful cursive script. They are indecipherable but Perdita can oddly read them – they are spells written on her skin as if she was a living spell scroll. Perdita now gains access to three cantrips from any of the Sorcerer, Warlock and Wizard spell lists, chosen only once. As Illufaus agreed to the offer of the Dark Lords, he suddenly awoke in the main room of the first floor of the house, a blazing fire burned in the hearth. Checking over himself he found no wounds and his equipment and armor undamaged.

Dark Gift #13
Illufaus's soul is divided between the character’s body and its shadow. Once per day as an action Illufaus can spawn a shadow under your control for a period of up to 1 hour. The shadow has half the hit points of the character, whose main body retains the other half. If the body or the shadow are reduced to 0 hit points while in this state the character dies.

After 1 hour the body and shadow reunite, which can also be done as an action if they are within 60 feet of each other.

Sunlight Weakness: While in sunlight, the shadow has disadvantage on attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws.

Actions:

Strength Drain, Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft. one creature.
Hits: 2d6+2 necrotic damage, and the target's Strength Score is reduced by 1d4. The target dies if this reduces its Strength to 0. Otherwise the reduction lasts until the target finishes a short or long rest.

If a non-evil humanoid dies from this attack, a new shadow rises from the corpse 1d4 hours later that is NOT under the players control.

You also keep the dark power that was given to you last time. Only remove Curse can remove Dark Gifts.

Illufuas gets up, and looks around, absentmindedly pulsing magic into himself. His shadow writhes as he stands up, and he begins to walk back to the basement.

"I'm going to scout around a bit." he says, "After my deaths, I find myself uniquely suited to this. Do what you like, or follow, I will find a way to get around those monsters."

He gets down to the basement, and takes a deep breath. As he does, his shadow detaches from his body and begins to slide along the walls, with Illufuas following slightly behind it.

Mechanics:
Casting false life and mage armour false life: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

Going down to the basement and detaching the shadow. Moving forward, with the shadow going to J-2 and Illufaus at M-2

Perdita Imogen seems less confident, less ambitious than the young adventurer on the road to Waterdeep. Like an injured schoolboy who habitually looks at a new scar, or a self-conscious schoolgirl who, in vain, tries to hide her freckles from new friends, Perdita Imogen tries to both cover up and to look at the arcane markings on her flesh.

She gazes for a moment at Illufaus as he leaves to go back downstairs.

The basement.

She does not want to follow. She wants to leave the house.

"Well, Hack, should we follow or wait for his return? He seemed confident he would be okay and we can hear him holler if he needs us."

I wonder if the others heard the Lords of the Mists, the Lords of Darkness that spoke to me. ....When we leave this house I want to try to find the noble in that letter we found, Strahd von Zarovich. Mayhaps he can answer our questions about the Mists and the Dark Lords.

And I want to learn what happened to the ghost of Rose.

Illufaus made his way back to the attic and then down into the basement once again, his shadow splitting ahead of him as a scout of sorts. The shadow entered the next room.

A wooden table and four chairs stand at the north end of this room. To the south are four alcoves containing moldy straw pallets. A passage exits to the west and then turns south where steps look to lead further down.

Hack and Perdita followed after the warlock, Perdita leading Hack in the darkness like a blind man now daring to light a torch yet. Hack was blind in the darkness and that would be the first issue they would have to address.

In Game Time: 5:15pm

Mage armor only covers your elf form, not both you and your shadow.

Illufaus moved forward with his shadow in the lead, looking around the next corner....

Looking down the small flight of steps here the shadow of Illufaus could see a larger chamber ahead.

Suddenly there was a noise at the table behind Illufaus, the sound of a chair sliding out from it. Turning quickly Illufaus saw a man sitting there. One he did not recognize.

In Game Time: 5:16pm

Jiang:

You were sitting at a campsite somewhere, wherever you like when a strange mist rolled in and somehow it transported you into the chair that you now set, it is dark and your human eyes can not see but you here movement in the room around you.

Jiang takes a moment to survey his person. He is still armed, still has his gear. Is sitting on a chair. Who kidnaps someone then puts them at a table in the dark like this?
