Well, this seems to be it. Let's have a closer look.

Perception take 20

Your Humble Narrator

It doesn't take you long to spot some faded tracks leading up to the tree.

I'll need survival checks to locate the cache.

hp 66/66, AC 26/17/20, CMD 23/24, F: +8, R: +11, W: +7, init: +5, per: +10 Human Bard 6/Fighter 2

Survival (aid another) - 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1

Edit: Some help I am - I'll just be over here, picking at the ground with a stick.

HP: 49/60 AC: 22, T:13, FF:21, CMD:16. Fort:+5, Ref:+5, Will:+8(+7). Per:+14, Init:+0, AoO:+8

Noticing the tracks as the Guardians approach the tree, Fenna slides off the back of her trusty mount to get a closer look, "Somebody has been here at least, whether to hide the treasure or retrieve it though is another matter."

Survival 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22

Your Humble Narrator

Fenna locates the cache in short order- the tracks lead to a section of recently disturbed earth by the roots of the tree.

Anyone got appropiate tools, i.e. a shovel? If not it will take up to an hour to dig for it. But either way, the group finds the stash-

Stash:

The cache itself is wrapped in a heavy leather cloak and consists of a masterwork dagger, a wand, a silver ring worth 75 gp, and a spellbook. The spellbook is mostly ruined, but still contains five spells- I'll need spellcraft checks to decipher them, please number them.

Edit: Wow posted in the same second M. Sorry for the ninja, no predators though.

1. Yelena is going to keep her portable alchemist lab on the pack animal.

2. Would anyone like to equip some of Yelena's alchemical items or potions? I'm counting them as semi-party items anyway.

3. Yelena coats 10 of her crossbow bolts with cold iron blanch.

1. 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
2. 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
3. 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29
4. 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12
5. 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18

Yelena, I'll be happy to grab an Alchemist fire, a smokestick, a thunderstone and a CLW potion.

Does this mean we have finished exploring the hex? Added the treasure to the new treasure sheet! Just keeping mine handy, not applying my 1 dose yet.

Go for it. Just remember to be generous in diverting party funds towards future Craft checks! ;)

Casimir lets out a low whistle of approval as the bundle is unwrapped.

Nice catch - well worth the sidetrip. Let's see if some of this stuff is special - Arcane Awareness Detect magic on the loot.

Yup, sorry got distracted. 25XP each. Yelena your on the same XP as the group for simplicity.

The wand and parts of the spellbook glow blue.

Yelena:

identify, mage armor, reduce person, silent image, and unseen servant. For simplicity i'lll tell you wand too- its a CL2 wand of burning hands with 10 charges left.

Yelena relates her findings to the rest of the party, "Callooh! Callay! I will have to commune with Cornflower this evening to impart the contents of the spellbook to him. Then I can prepare them as my other spells." She stows the spellbook on the pack horse and tucks the wand into her belt.

I think our next area to explore was the hex to the SW of our current position or SE of the gold mine hex, it would be hex # A34. EDIT: Map has been updated.

Your Humble Narrator

With a few hours of daylight left, the Guardians move south-west to an area south-east of the gold mine they discovered some time ago.

1d100 ⇒ 18

The massive Sycamore tree is visible in the distance with the fading light of the sun as the group make camp. The weather unleashes a full-furied thunderstorm complete with lightning striking within a few miles of the camp, and the group try their best to remain dry.

1d100 ⇒ 82

The next morning the group awaken, their campsite soggy and treacherous, and make plans for the day.

Heading straight for the Sycamore or exploring the hex?

Duke of Kardas, First Sword of Iomedae HP:51/76 AC:27 F:+14, R:+8, W:+12 CMD:23/24 P:-1 Init:+0 AOO:+16

1 vote for heading for the syacamore and then exploring the hex.

Male Human Cavalier (Order of the Dragon) 1

Sounds go to me.

Your Humble Narrator

As you ride to the Sycamore, you see various signs of recent battle as you pass- the corpses left behind are of either kobolds or mites, stripped to their undergarments. Clearly the victor of each skirmish stripped their opponents bodies but removed their own. The skirmishes suggest neither side has made decisive victories, although the mites seem to have won a few more battles than the kobolds.

The tree itself is a massive landmark- a hundred feet tall. From what you have heard from the huntersat the trading post, the mites live in the roots of the sycamore, and there is a hidden entrance somewhere...

Perception checks please.

Duke of Kardas, First Sword of Iomedae HP:51/76 AC:27 F:+14, R:+8, W:+12 CMD:23/24 P:-1 Init:+0 AOO:+16

Malthir see nothing :) actually I try to will assist someone else, Edric I suggest you do the same with your big +3 [ooc]perception 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (5) - 1 = 4 [/ooc]

EDIT: As I said I see nothing...

Yelena reaches into her robes and pulls out her familiar. She holds the overweight tabby out in front of her under its front arms with its legs dangling. "Cornflower, we need you to find where those mites live for us. Can you? Can my big sweetie find the mites for Mommy?" A few kisses and hugs later, the cat searches around the sycamore for the trapdoor.

Cornflower Perception 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18

"I would recommend keeping your blanch treated weapons unseen for now," Fenna says, beginning to search the roots of the great tree for any concealed openings, "I suspect that the sight of them may prove a hindrance to any attempts to find a peaceful resolution."

Perception 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21

Male Human Cavalier (Order of the Dragon) 1

Preception:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15

Your Humble Narrator

Sorry for the slow updates, pretty busy lately.

Fenna locates the hidden entrance, descending into the earth- a root lined shaft leading down 10 feet. It is pitch black inside, and those without darkvision will be needing a light source. Climbing down the shaft, the group find themselves in extremely cramped quarters- with the exception of Fenna who is small enough to easily move in the earthen tunnels.

Everyone except Fenna is on a -2 to all attack rolls in this place. Assuming someone declares they are using a light source...

The narrow tunnel you are in extends to the right and to the left of the shaft, and is fairly long- extending 40 feet in either direction.

hp 66/66, AC 26/17/20, CMD 23/24, F: +8, R: +11, W: +7, init: +5, per: +10 Human Bard 6/Fighter 2

Well, what do we do now? Move down all at once, or send out scouts? Casimir whispers, glancing at Fenna and Yelena, who are both better suited at sneaking down the dark passageway than the blind and clumsy humans.

Yelena whispers to the others, "I can scout ahead. I will return and report shortly."

Before descending into the hole, Yelena would have cast mage armor as a precautionary measure while still on the surface.

Yelena readies her crossbow, then quietly creeps through the tunnel.

Stealth 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30

Stealth 1d20+11

Which way, right or left?

Male Human Cavalier (Order of the Dragon) 1

Long post just got deleted so here is the short version:
Is it too late to request one or two vials of blanch?
Edric ties all the horses, and Fenna's pony, in a line behind Talia and tells her to take them to safty is they are attacked.
Handle Animal:1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Edric then loads his crossbow and straps on his sheild and volenters to follow Yelena in next.

1. Yelena will go left. 2. There were two vials of cold iron blanch left. 3. DON'T follow until Yelena returns from scouting. Your Stealth modifier is a -5! ;)

Duke of Kardas, First Sword of Iomedae HP:51/76 AC:27 F:+14, R:+8, W:+12 CMD:23/24 P:-1 Init:+0 AOO:+16

Malthir stays put but has his longsword drawn out and will guard the other side, the right passageway but is not proceeding down. Since we need light he will strike 1 of his sunrods and ask Fenna to hold it since she isn't really wielding any weapons.

His stealth is actually -7, Edric just hasn't had a chance yet to update his character :) mine is -8 so unless you are well ahead of us we have no stealth as a party...at least with your 30 you will be able to look around a bit. Maybe we can just find a chamber and then draw them back to us...

Malthir Al Dagon wrote:

Perhaps we should hold off on the light until Yelena returns with her scouting report? I think lighting up a sunrod is just asking for trouble. Just a thought. :)

Your Humble Narrator

Yelena:

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20

You sneak down the left passage, hearing movement ahead of you, down a small slope. Taking a peek over the edge, you can see some kind of prank workshop ahead of you.

Three crude, wooden workbenches occupy the center of this room, their tops strewn with various tiny tools, metal and wooden hardware, and blocks of wood.

Two mites are gleefully practicing with what appear to be miniature catapults, flinging caltrops into each others mouth. A third sits, appearing to be sulking as he can't join in the game. This third mite spots you, his hands going to his mouth and his ugly blue head turning pale in panic as he spots you.

Can I get an initiative roll please, keep all of it spoilered for now.

Opposed Initiative-
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Initiative 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16

Yelena:

Over to you- it looks like the mites about to react to your presence.

DM:

If it's a regular round...

Yelena casts burning hands. 15-ft cone-shaped burst. Reflex DC 15 for half damage.

Fire damage 2d4 ⇒ (3, 3) = 6

Move action back towards the party as quietly as possible.

Stealth 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23

If it's a surprise round...

Same attack as above. Double move action on next turn back towards party.

Your Humble Narrator
Yelena Shukhov wrote:

Yelena:

Your not close enough to affect any of the mites with burning hands. Effectively its a surprise round with you and the mite who spotted you acting- chances are stealth rolls will be redundant after your action regardless btw.

Okay but it sounded like we were all down in the tunnell already standing around in the darkness. I will give it to Fenna to strike in case anything happens.

DM:
Well then how far away am I from the mites? You know, for spell range purposes.

Your Humble Narrator
Yelena Shukhov wrote:

Yelena:

30 feet from the mites. Its quite a small chamber, your on a slope leading down to it.

DM:

Yelena will draw a vial of alchemist's fire from her belt (a free action with her masterwork potion belt), and throw it at the center mite (standard action). She will then move quickly back to her companions (move action).

Alchemist Fire Entry

Ranged touch attack 1d20 ⇒ 13 (+1 BAB, +3 Dex, -4 distance).
Fire damage 1d6 ⇒ 4 to center mite, 1 fire damage to each mite within 5 feet.

Yelena's voice reverberates in the cramped tunnels as you hear her coming back towards the entrance. "We have company! Three mites behind me, probably on fire."

Male Human Cavalier (Order of the Dragon) 1

Edric should be completely updated now with both the new armor and current gold.

hp 66/66, AC 26/17/20, CMD 23/24, F: +8, R: +11, W: +7, init: +5, per: +10 Human Bard 6/Fighter 2

Casimir pulls out his bow and a blanched arrow.

Fenna, some light would be nice now.

Your Humble Narrator

Yelena:

You see the alchemist fire down the unaware mite and splash his friends just before you flee.

Yelena runs towards the group, and squeals of surprise and pain are behind her, along with some shouted words...

Speaks Sylvan & Perception DC17:

Intruder! She has slain Dingetooth! Urgath, ready the catapults!

If you do decide to go back down that tunnel i'd like a marching order.

HP: 49/60 AC: 22, T:13, FF:21, CMD:16. Fort:+5, Ref:+5, Will:+8(+7). Per:+14, Init:+0, AoO:+8

Perception 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11

"Sounds like a diplomatic solution isn't on the table," Fenna says, cracking the sunrod against the wall to send illumination cascading along the corridor.

Your Humble Narrator

The tunnel is narrow enough that if you choose to go onwards you'll have to go single file through this tunnel.

Yelena doesn't hear the whispers, but can relate what she saw of the room. "Ahead on the left is a small room filled with mite-sized catapults. Be careful of them flinging anything in your face. There were three of them initially, but I took down one with a vial of alchemist fire." Yelena will stay in back.

Male Human Paladin 1

If they are waiting for us, then maybe we go should go down the other passageway, it may circle around them? I can lead the way.

Your Humble Narrator

While you are dicsussing the situation, the sounds coming from the room fade...

HP: 49/60 AC: 22, T:13, FF:21, CMD:16. Fort:+5, Ref:+5, Will:+8(+7). Per:+14, Init:+0, AoO:+8

"I am not sure that would be wise..." Fenna whispers to Malthir, "They could as easily attack us from behind as soon as we turn away from them, and in these cramped conditions that may prove deadly for us. If the corridor opens out further along as Yalena says, it may be better for us to get there where the mites' small statures are less of an advantage."

Your Humble Narrator

OOC Note- even the chamber that Yelena saw in here was too small for medium sized creatures to fight effectively. That -2's sticking for this whole crawl.
