Perception to hear Amara: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (17) + 12 = 29
"We should attempt to limit entry points."
Riken distractedly ruffles the cat's head while pausing to think.
"Yes, Paka and I will go check the perimeter. Paka will continue to prowl the area and hopefully be an early warning."
Riken looks down at the cat and catches his eyes to drive the point home. "But I want you to stay out of sight, you hear me."
Turning to Amara, Riken makes a slight, awkward bow. "Forgive me for overhearing. I did not mean to intrude but it sounds like we will have unwanted visitors. Gorgowzowa's suggestion of a lookout seems wise given the circumstances. Perhaps I should take a position in the tower. I would not wish to..." Riken trails off for a moment remembering tea the previous day. He never intends to be rude, but preferring the company of his companion and the solitude of the forest he's admits to himself he's not good with humans. The formalities of this culture make him feel further out of place. "I would not wish to squander your work".
Addressing the group again Riken adds, "If there is time after we check the perimeter I would like to search some of the rooms upstairs for anything that could be useful. "Or valuable" he thinks to himself.

Shadowstorm makes the best of the remaining furniture and removes poor quality remnant silk, pulling out replacement arrangements and ceremonial tea sets. I should be assisting my comrades, training, working. There is work to be done and security to ensure... Alas, Amara Li has decreed that I have a different role in this scenario.
Shadowstorm continues his servant duties.

There is time to go upstairs. I think I will keep a list of how much time your characters have left with actions in spoilers, and we will move on definitively sometime tomorrow if people have time remaining.
There are no hints of recent visitors to this manor. Quite the opposite.
- Talk, head upstairs, check Door. 5 minutes.
- Go across, check crossing, go upstairs and check the light room of the light house. 5 minutes.
- Go downstairs to the storage room, check door and room's contents. 5 minutes.
Time remaining: 1 hour, 45 minutes, unless you take longer to search a given room.
Results:
The door between A14 and A15 will require an knowledge (engineering) or similar check. Same with downstairs door.
Light room will require one Perception and one knowledge (engineering) check.
Store room will require a Perception check. Actually, you can skip this because Riken nailed it.
Actions:
- Search perimeter. 5 Minutes.
- Search A4. 5 Minutes.
- Search A14. 5 Minutes.
- Search A15. 5 Minutes.
- Search A16. 5 Minutes.
- Search A13. 5 Minutes.
- Search A12. 5 Minutes.
- Search A6. 5 Minutes.
- Search A9. 5 Minutes.
- Search A10. 5 Minutes.
- Search A5. 5 Minutes.
- Search A11. 5 Minutes.
Time remaining: 1 hour
Results:
The perimeter is clear. Based off of your survival roll, you notice the cliff has areas which it may be possible to scale and are aware of the potential vulnerability to a sneak attack if one comes.

- Two rusty bear traps
- A 20-gallon barrel of whale oil
- A collection of old lumber and iron fittings
Upon inspection of the many old pieces of lumber and iron fittings, you find that they are actually what remains of a disassembled catapult. However, not all of the pieces are present.
The downstairs of the manor remains unexplored.

Riken rejoins the team and reports his findings. "This place has definitely not had visitors in a long while before us."
Gesturing to the cliff "I'd say those cliffs are scaleable. Any ideas on how we can secure it from a sneak attack?"
"In the storage we've got a few bear traps, a big ol' barrel of oil and some lumber we can use to block off some passageways."
"Gorgowzowa, I think you're right about the master bedroom. It seems pretty unstable. Though perhaps we should use that to our advantage should we get overwhelmed instead of trying to sure it up. Though frankly I don't know how. Maybe one of you guys should take a look at it."
"The room above the entryway at the top of the stairs has a trap door and some murder holes. I'll bet we could put that to good use"
"The sun room up there needs some attention. With those big windows someone could easily if they cam prepared for it."
"Gorgowzowa, are you suggesting you'd prefer to take lookout in the tower? I admit I'd really like to experience one of these tea ceremonies and learn about this Way and these Kirin. I didn't join the Society to be a body guard or an errand boy. I joined to experience the world. I just don't want to be the reason things things go south, ya know? This meeting seems a bit more important than some the the missions I've been sent on so far."
"Frankly, I was hoping one of you guys would know a thing or two about defending someplace like this. My talents are outdoors where I have room to avoid these situations generally."
"Gorb, Dae, perhaps you guys should split up and check the lower floor"

![]() |
Dae-Lach listens to Gorgowzowa's ideas, and offers some of his own.
"Rather than a fall-back, what if we used the second floor of the tower as the meeting room? We could move the round table and chairs there, then closing the doors would seal in the light so no outside observers would know we were in there. If we were discovered, it might be easier to defend, with only the narrow bridge to cross from the manor, or we would have the high ground if they tried to ascend the narrow stairs. Then, if needed, We would have two means of escape - down through the storeroom, or across the bridge. We could set up lights in the main bedroom to make others think the meeting was being held there. Being on the second floor, they couldn't simply peer in from the ocean to see no one was in the room. We can decide after you assess the tower's interior.
I will check out the desk in the bedroom. I also want to get a look at those fireplaces to be sure they haven't been used as a means of entry. Rilendo, would you assist me just in case I stumble on any surprises?"
While Riken and Paka circuit the manor (assuming they choose so), and Gorgo heads to the tower, Dae-Lach (along with Rilendo if he chooses) will first inspect the large fireplace in the great room. He first looks for signs of disturbance in any ashes at the base, then checking for smudges along the sides. If he sees nothing amiss, Dae-Lach will then use a small mirror to peer up into the chimney without needing to poke his head in the firebox. If the chimney is clear, he will close the flue if present, then check the grate that circulates air at the bottom of the firebox.
Assuming no surprises, Dae-Lhach will proceed upstairs and similarly inspect the fireplace in A5, followed by the one in the master bedroom.
After the fireplaces, Dae-Lhach will search through the desk.
How many rolls for perception should I try? just one, or one for each fireplace and one for the desk?

![]() |

The doors between A14 and A15 are sturdy and could be boarded up (entering into the manor) with lumber. Gorgowzowa is not sure whether the same can be said of the bottom doorway into the Lighthouse.
Dae-Lhach, I think you should have 3 Perception rolls: one for the Great Hall's fireplace, one for the upstairs and one for the desk.

![]() |

Gorgowzowa returns to the main room to discuss what he's found.
"Will the envoy be coming by boat? It appears the fog has thickened, and the light is out. There is oil in the base of the tower we could bring up and try to light the beacon. Other than that, the doors seem to be able to be boarded up."
Upon hearing the rest of the reports...
"Could we salvage the bed to help block the larger windows, I know supplies are limited. As far as how to use a weakened floor to our advantage, how does thirty some stone of orc falling on them through the ceiling sound?"

![]() |

You guys can totally use the furniture to barricade windows, etc. Be careful not to use everything, as there is a ceremony to perform. You have no clue as to when -or if- there will be any problems, so do not go too overboard, eh?
I also can't recall Riken casting a single thing other than spamming a wand of CLW.

![]() |

Dae-Lhach and Rilendo notice that the fireplace in the Great Hall is abnormally large and its walls appear to support area larger than the fireplace on the ground level. Small cracks appear in the wall (the west wall of U6) and a cool slight escapes. There is a smell of earth as you analyze these cracks.
Knowledge (engineering): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
Dae-Lhach, Rilendo, let me know what bonuses you might have to that roll.
The indentation of the this area of the wall suggests that the fireplace may have only just started to collapse inward. As you inspect the second floor and its fireplaces, you notice that they take up the space you questioned earlier, and the structural state of this manor could easily explain the foundational issue with the smoke and fire stack.
The dresser (in A13) is locked with a simple lock.
Disable Device: 1d20 ⇒ 16
Bonuses to your roll will far exceed the DC, rolling to pace this.
While it is easy enough to open, the remnants of disintegrated forms and template letters are all that you find.

Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Shadowstorm notices an odd crest while working in the kitchen and steps aside to inform Gorgowzowa. "As I recall, my friend, you are a practitioner of the culinary arts as well as mental discipline. I have seen a marking upon the kitchen's oven that escapes any regional branding I have ever seen, and it is not something I have noticed elsewhere within the manor aside from this one location. Perhaps you could explain its significance?"
Shadowstorm describes the what and where of the marking.
If you wish to investigate, give me either a Knowledge (nobility) check or a Linguistics check.

Gorgowzowa seeks out Amara.
"Please pardon my interuption, but will the envoy be arriving by boat? The fog outside has become more dense, and I was wondering if we should put fire to the light house lamp to help them arive?"
Upon getting his answer he will make his way to search other locations in the manor that have not been searched while waiting for help to carry up the oil. If someone would help with the oil, if it cannot be carried as is, perhaps he will try to do it in buckets or the ilk. If he cannot figure out how to light the tower, he would ask for help with that as well. This is all assuming the envoy is arriving by sea. He will also attempt to search the horizon again, now concerned about attack by sea.

In response to Gorgo, "Would not lighting the lamp serve as a beacon to announce our presence. Surely as the caretakers, they would know these waters and would have sent an advance party to run the light if they required it? The oil would make a good defensive option."

![]() |

Amara responds about the envoy. "Gorgowzowa, thank you for the concern about the safety of our envoy's arrival. We have made no arrangements to ignite the lighthouse so I must assume that Tsuneo has either an advance party for the docking, a magical guidance to this island or some similar measure. Beside that, I fear that lighting the flame may attract unwanted attention to this location; the light has not been lit for quite some time."
Gorgowzowa is able to identify the mark in the kitchen as a crest of some sort, but are not able to discern its source or meaning.
Upon Dae-Lhach's proposal, Amara thinks a minute. "We are here first and foremost to secure an alliance with the Way of the Kirin. That means adhering to ceremony, protocol and respect. I fear moving this ceremony to a smaller room within this manor would ill suit our purpose.
"We do not know that the Golden League is here or even on its way here. Until we have anything more tangible, we should remain within the original plan."

![]() |

Most of you guys have at least an hour of time left. You can board stuff up, set traps, practice for the ceremony, scout the island for bottlenecks, etc. There was even a catapult that was only missing a few pieces. I will move us on to the ceremony around 9:00 PM CST, so let us know if there are any other actions you guys want to take.

![]() |

"Let's see if we can put the catapult together and ready it to launch the lamp oil at any attacking ships? Or even move it to the second floor where we could set it on fire, or just boil it, and pour it on attackers coming up the cliff, even?"
Gorgowzowa thinks for a minute...
"Venture-Captain, I saw a crest in the other room, but do not recognize it. It looks like..." Gorgowzowa describes the crest "Do you recognize that? Is that the sign of the Way of the Kirin? If not, is it any crest of known friend or foe? I have a strange feeling, seeing as you previously said this land was under the upkeep of the envoy, and is in such disrepair for this serious occasion, that this is perhaps seeming more like a false meeting. Simply a way for our enemies to draw us away from protection to ambush us. I begin to fear more that we need to have a contingency plan for this than before; a way to escape to a more defendable position in the case of ambush."
Gorgowzowa looks around at the others...
"Does anyone else share my concerns, or am I alone in thinking this? Venture-Captain, would you at least consider not entering the ceremony room until we have made contact with the envoy outside? Surely protocol would allow me to greet them and lead them in. I may be able to ascertain at that point if my fears are for naught and myself a fool."
Gorgowzowa talks to the others in the party.
"If you do not think it folly, I truly believe the windows above looking over the cliff are a place we should consider either blocking, perhaps with the bed or the ilk, or trapping for alarm. How I wish I had caltrops... Wait, is it a possibility to trap that entry to impede any attackers? Better they make it in and be at our mercy than find an alternative route? The light tower seems like it would not be a good vantage point, due to the fog. If the VC will not let me greet them, should myself and perhaps Paka simply hide and observe, so we could return and warn you of any persons not coming in directly with the envoy? I have a bad feeling about this."

![]() |

Amara Li considers Gorgowzowa's words a moment before speaking. It is apparent that her patience on this particular matter is being tested. "Pathfinder, I have gone through painstaking lengths to ensure that this contact is genuine. I have a multitude of reasons to believe Tsuneo is truly a legitimate member of the Way of the Kirin." By reputation alone, it is quite probable that Amara's ambition to an alliance and the importance of this meeting are sensitizing her nerves on this issue.
"As for the crest, I believe it may be related to Tsuneo's clan. If you wish to know more about this, I suggest you ask him when he arrives." She pauses, considering the request to meet with Tsuneo and escort him. "On that subject, and given the rank you willingly assume in society, it would not be out of line for you to greet Tsuneo when he arrives. If you wish to do so, please be sure to dress as appropriately as you would be receiving an honored envoy. Any point from the pier for his landing to just outside the manor would be acceptable."
Amara turns to speak with the servants preparing the Great Hall, but pauses, as if reconsidering her words "I do not mean to be harsh. There are hints that an attempted interdiction may occur, but they may be nothing. On the other hand, they could be everything. We must tread carefully, as this meeting is paramount to Society efforts within Tian Xia. Either aborting our mission or fumbling this contact will ruin years of preparation for this meeting. We must be careful, but not too careful. We must be cautious, but not too cautious. We must secure the area, but not offend our honored guest. We are fortunate that this location is his choice, as the condition of this ..." A long pause ensues as the Venture-Captain looks around the room, sagging ceiling, deteriorated furniture, collapsing fire stack all being taken into mind. "... esteemed estate may otherwise offend our honorable recipient."
Amara shares a parting gesture and proceeds to direct the staging for the tea ceremony.

![]() |

"I am most surely being a fool, Venture-Captain, and your tolerance for such is much appreciated. I take your word to heart."
He'll find Rilendo and Nestaron and ask if they thought the oil that was found could be used to protect the cliff side, or if anyone wanted to stay in that room to alert people, cut grapples, whatever.
Gorgowzowa will now help clean the manor and use his perception to look for any larger things that might offend that have been overlooked and try to right them. He'll prepare himself as soon as possible to meet the envoy. He'd like to take a lamp if one is available and fuel. Gorgowzowa will make his way towards the pier, scanning as he goes. He'll find cover near the pier where he can watch for the arrival of the envoy. When he can make out the ship, and if he perceives nothing afoot, he'll light the lamp, assuming it is still at all foggy, and conspicuously make way for the pier. Upon arrival, he will bow, introduce himself and ask if there is anything he can do or carry for them to their destination. He'd like to make it to the pier with as much time as possible to wait and watch.

Dae-Lhach is disappointed at Amara's insistence to have the meeting in what he belives to be the least securable room in the building. He manages to keep the thought from showing on his face, "As you wish, Venture-Captain". With a slight bow, Dae-Lhach excuses himself and follows Gorgo to the catapult. "How do fools rise to the heights they do?", Dae-Lhach ponders.
When out of earshot of Amara Li, Dae-Lhach speaks low to Gorgo, "I too think something seems amiss. Though we cannot be certain, we are here to assure the security, so best to err on the side of caution. With this fog, I'm not sure how effective the distance of the catapult would be. Could we somehow use the mechanism instead for a more close range assault?"
I could role-play a bit more on the following, but I'm pressed for time. Dae-lach will suggest that Riken and Paka do a scout of the island so to be familiar if we need to flee, then have Riken take place with his bow on the bridge while Paka stalks below. He suggests that Rilendo should take position in the bedroom to watch for attacks from the cliff. He could have the oil with him, so he could either drop it on a cliff assault, or run around and use it through the trap door. I would then dress in my cleric vestments and accompany Gorgo to the pier if he wishes. If there are no objections, I plan to attend the ceremony to monitor for suspicous activity from our "hosts". I'm not sure how much boarding up we should do as this technically is not our manor and would this insult our hosts?

![]() |

Riken bows half-heartedly to Amara and follows Gorgowzowa and Dae-lach.
"I do not think it is a good use of time to further scout the island at this point. I'd like to start a fire in the hearth in the spare room. I'll gather some pots from the kitchen and a few (3) gallons of the oil to heat up so it can be available to pour down the trap door should it be necessary. "
Riken turns to Gorgowzowa, his brow furrowed, and said in an undertone, "I'd hoped to ask Amara but it seemed unwise to ask her more questions. I'm hoping you'd know if it would be inappropriate to take Tsuneo up through the tower to enter the house so we can fully secure the doors on the main floor? I've watched people going though the back doors of stores in the market so that seems like in thing around here."
If so I will use my remaining time to board up the doors. Use furniture to stop up the stairwell at R/G,5. I'll gather some furniture at the top of the stairs at M/W, 11, stacking it in L,9 and covering it with a cloth of some kind so it is less unsightly for our guest. And if there's any time after that (unlikely) I'll board up as many windows as I can.
If it it would be inappropriate to take Tsuneo the 'back way' I'll do all the same stuff but leave one of the doors on the main floor open. I was thinking the kitchen door at P3 to hopefully give as much time as possible to get upstairs.

![]() |

Well that changes things. The openings at V1 and S1 have what looks like a little pane of glass in them. It didn't look like V12, S12, P10, or P3 didn't have the same thing. I was wondering how the heck we were going to secure this place with that many openings.

![]() |

Riken begins to feel the time pressure to secure the building.
I suppose if doesn't change everything though. I'll still take some pots from the kitchen and 3 gallons of the oil and start a fire at A5. (10 min?)
Use furniture to stop up the stairwell at R5/G5. (5 min)
Gather some furniture at the top of the stairs at M11/W11, stacking it in L9 and cover it with a cloth. (5 min)
Board up the sun room (10 min?)
Pull the book shelf from U9/U10 in front of the door at U9 (5 Min)
Set the bear traps at V15 and V16 and try to hide them the best I can. (10 min)
Get ready for the ceremony. I purchased traditional vestments as Gorgowzowa suggested, but given the circumstance, I'll wear them over my armor.

![]() |

You can set the traps with a, uh, Disable Device check, I guess (above). I know Dae-Lhach has it trained to roughly +7, so...
Trap #1, V16: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Trap #2, disputed placement: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
Dae-Lhach, there were only two found. You'll need to pick where you want to set them, however. V16 is fine, but V15 is overkill and you wanted to use them at the windows, so you get to pick the other one.
Since I was too busy finishing Final Fantasy VIII last night to move the scenario along, I will do so quite shortly.

![]() |

How much of the preparations does Gorgowzowa know of, i.e. if he comes back and jumps through a window, does he know to avoid bear traps, or that certain passages are blocked off? Should I assume none since I was going to do minimal cleaning, helping, for affect of the ceremony before leaving rather than working with the others by that point? Could I see the top of the manor from the lighthouse? Is the bridge from the lighthouse to the manor covered?

![]() |

A bit past the mid-afternoon, Gorgowzowa sees a small vessel, of two small masts. Wooden dragons line the vessel in ornate patterns, with a lit lantern inside the mouth of a dragon, the figurehead of the ship. Gorgowzowa stays in neutral territory to observe and verify the new arrivals' intentions before greeting them
The lantern shows its place in the fog and it slowly, yet expertly navigates toward the pier. From the sighting to the landing a period of perhaps 15 minutes passes. There are two figures on the vessel, a middle-aged, fat sailor who pilots the craft and an old man dressed in formal ceremonial armor. He, alone departs the 'ship', slowly exiting via plank. In a few hushed words, he directs the sailor to wait with the ship. The elder man walks steadily onto the pier, but with a slightly slower step.
Gorgowzowa's Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16
Gorgowzowa's Stealth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
The man appears ancient, a samurai who wears his armor lightly despite his age.
Gorgowzowa proceeds to a neutral position, and watches the elderly man being his journey up the pier towards the lighthouse manor. After a few brief moments of reconsidering, he approaches the samurai noticeably, respectfully, and openly.
"Iko Tsuneo, I presume? Please allow me to escort you up to the lighthouse manor."

![]() |
Dae-Lhach disappears for several minutes and the sound of hammering comes from the tower storeroom. When he returns, Dae-Lhach carries several lengths of lumber in his arms. On closer inspection, you see that several nails have been driven through each board so that when laid on the ground, all the points stand up. "This won't kill, but it should slow anyone down and let us know of their presence."
Dae-Lhach places two to three boards under each of the windows that are missing panes, reasoning that an intruder would need to break the glass in the others and thus indicate their location. The boards are laid parallel and close to the wall so anyone peering in would not immediately see the danger.
When he sees Riken place the bear traps, Dae-Lhach asks, Do you mind if I move this beneath a window? One should do the job nicely here.". Assuming no objections, Dae-Lhach will move the trap to P10.

Before Tsuneo arrives
Having donned the traditional attire Riken looks around at the preparations.
Well, that's as good as its going to get I suppose. A look of frustration crosses his face. Bah, how can I ever experience cultures if all I'm doing is standing watch. He grumbles.
Riken's furrowed face quickly lights up in a smile. Magic! Of course!
He makes his way to the front entrance and, closing his eyes for a moment, tries to remember how this thing works. Reaching into his pouch he pulls out a tiny bell and very fine silver wire.
With a few words the items in his hand glow faintly for a second and disappear.
He makes his way to the to great room for the ceremony. That should help.
