Krissina |
Well, hello there, just checking in. Krissina is mostly a support/utility character, so I'll be spending my time hiding at the back - or probably not as she lacks the Wisdom to realise that's what she should be doing.
Glenda Huckleberry |
Glenda reporting! Thanks for the invite.
Is reskinning of abilities allowed? When Glenda uses her ray of frost it looks like she's throwing her fish at her enemy. It then boomerangs back to her, whether it hits her enemies or not. Mechanically it'll be the same, just that it doesn't look like your usual ray of frost.
Almost the same thing for magic missiles.
Glenda Huckleberry |
Are you reskinning all your spells to fish? That's... curious.
Or fishy! Well, not all.. mage hand, prestidigitation, mending are still as they are. Color spray... I guess it might be light reflecting off the scales of the fish. We'll see!
Thanks DM!
Aeshuura |
I like both characters, Rat, but you can never have too many fighters. ;)
Fronar_Gossamar |
Checking in!
@Aeshuura - this alias was a warlock in a previous life. Spells have been updated. I delayed that so I could ensure no one slipped in ahead of me to get the last spot.
Greetings all. I'm not sure about anyone else, but I'm psyched to get my 1st adventure league character started!
Glenda Huckleberry |
Checking statline.
DCI is 4113285144
We have AL at some local games shops in Singapore but the DMs tend to be tardy about log sheets.
This will be Glenda's first adventure as well and looking forward to it!
Krissina |
So just to run down composition we have:
- Krissina tiefling bard (lore) 3
- Seraphyna half-elf warlock 2
- Glenda Huckleberry halfling sorcerer 1
- Sahil Reis human fighter (battlemaster) 3
- Fronar_Gossamar Gnome Wizard 1
- Ranish Lizardfolker Fighter (Champion) 3
- Drakr Dwarf Cleric (War) 1
I've not pored over everyone's character sheets, but we've got 2 fighters and a cleric to tank, a cleric and a bard to heal and 3 spellcaster/artillery types.
Given the offensive power we've got available, Krissina will try and keep her spells mostly for heals then and rely on crossbow/rapier for combat.
Rakish |
Ok, I'll keep Rakish for this adventure. Although, if you don't mind, I'd like to level him up to level 4.
I ran an AL game the other week for four brand new players to D&D/AL (only one ever played D&D before, and he plus two others were under 15!), and that gives me a DM reward of 2500 xp (500 for the first new player, 250 for each additional new player, double if over half the table are new players).
Aeshuura |
Rakish, go ahead! No sense keeping him back at 3rd. It should help everyone having the extra 'firepower'. Man, you sure are making use of those DM rewards! I rarely get new players here on Kauai. Though I may be able to get some from Fronar!
I will try to get first post up on Friday...
Fronar_Gossamar |
since the subject came up about playing at various places, what class would you say is most common at random tables?
Is there a class that doesn't get played much, but a lot of random tables WISH someone was playing?
Aeshuura |
I don't know, I have seen almost every class played with the exception of a druid, though my friend said that will be his next class...
bookrat |
Aeshuura, my first game with you was with a druid. Raina is a coastal druid! :)
Although, she was level 1 at the time. This was in the Secret of Sokol Keep.
Since he had no one to play D&D with, his parents contacted me to teach the whole family to play, so he could keep playing. I did so by running DDEX 1-1: Defence of Phlan.
Played a game with him, his step dad, his little brother, and his step sister.
It was a lot of fun, and I'm hoping to run it again for them soon.
Aeshuura |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Sorry 'Rat, I was referring to my tables here on Kauai. You are right, Raina was a druid, I did forget that. I think I have seen every class, though not every archetype...
That is an awesome family that would do that for him. I am glad that they reached out to you.
My personal favorite is seeing interesting takes on the traditional classes. For example, my favorite AL character is a bard that I am playing. However, he is not the tropish bard that is usually played, but rather the squire to my friend's knight character. I deliberately took spells that could be mistaken for skill. He gives a little pep talk to his brother and voila, heroism!
He just hit level 3, and I took college of valor, so now he has learned to use medium armor, shields, and martial weapons! ^_^
Glenda looks like an interesting one too... :)

Glenda looks like an interesting one too... :)
Thanks! I like to play characters that are a bit kooky, as long as the DMs allow some reskinning.
Previous AL character is a half-orc fighter/warlock that didn't know he had magic. He tossed rocks that he was convinced grew from the pebbles be picked up and his hex was basically just him cursing his foe.
Aeshuura |
I was watching Acquisitions Incorporated the C-team and I loved Patrick Rothfuss' character Driebus Beestinger. He was a Rogue-Sorcerer super emo half-orc. It was made even more hilarious that he was the halfling grandmother's son!
I love characters that are just ridiculous, but are tied together with a theme...
Fronar_Gossamar |
so I DM'd for the 1st time ever today. New DM, 5 players who never played Adventures league before. Can someone verify if i'm understanding the dm points correctly?
500xp for 1st new. X2 for more than half the table new = 1000xp
250xp x 4 other players. x2 for whole table new = 2000xp
potion of healing or 10 downtime days = 1st time DM
total xp = 3000xp (2700=4th level: pg 15 phb)
does all this mean I could create a new character at lvl 4 or level this character up to level 4?
If this is all correct? Since we are just starting, would you allow me to apply the level up to this character for this game?
Rakish |
Yes, that's correct. However, since this game has technically begun, it'll be up to the DM to approve the level up. Otherwise you'll have to wait for the next game.
Aeshuura |
As we have not started anything of note, it will be fine. but after today, all applications of DM Credit will be applied after we are done.
Welcome to the life of a DM!
Aeshuura |
Oh, if you are going to apply it to Fronar, please update your profile as soon as possible.
Fronar_Gossamar |
Since there are at least 2 other DMs here, can you clarify a dm rewards question?
So for "A great upheaval" from Storm King's Thunder, I receive:
XP based on optimized player level in 1 hr increments
---- this one is a "milestone" and characters were level 3 at the end of our 6hr session. Does this translate to 2hrs at each level? 2 x 50xp for 1st, 2 x 75xp for 2nd, and 2 x 100xp for 3rd = 450xp total + DM quest rewards. (calculated earlier as 3000)
---- total DM reward XP = 3450
Downtime days = Same as players earned
---- 3 x 5 (2hr session) = 15 total downtime days
Gold = 1/2 the XP earned.
---- 225gp
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Can DM's acquire magic items from an adventure they DM?
My next session will result in a bag of holding being given to the players. Can I then add a bag of holding to one of my characters?
Or
Are DM Quests the only way for a DM to receive a magic item, for example "Dedicated DM" provides a tier appropriate magic item once I complete 24 "game hours" of DM'ing?
Aeshuura |
So, assuming that you guys completed the Dripping caves, then yes, that should be correct for the XP and gold.
Aeshuura |
Sorry to hear that Sahil. Just focus on getting better! We will still have games in the future and hope to see you then!
Drakr |
Since today (Saturday) is my #5 child's 1st birthday party and tomorrow is Mother's Day here in Oz I'm unlikely to make a post this weekend...
Aeshuura |
It's okay, we can take a break this weekend. I have yardwork in the morning Saturday, a face-to-face game in the evening, and a 2nd Sunday Gamesday to run all day Sunday.

What we know:
- the thefts began six nights ago and every two nights since. Three thefts in all and all occurred in various shops within Scholar's Square.
What we know about the books:
Aya: The book stolen from her was a treatise on the Weave (of Magic), entitled: The Weave: A Collection of Impractical Observations.
I would write you up a list, though you will find almost all of them officials from the library. Only two were consultants that live in Waterdeep and Baldur's Gate, respectively, and are respected wizards.
A magic horn that I had found in my adventuring days and three spell scrolls were taken as well. (detect magic, a fireball, and I think, hold person)
Foss:
The book in question held the personal journal o' Ren o' the Blade.
Well now, Ren o' the Blade was nae o' noble blood, rather he was an adventurer built up his own riches, 'e did. He was instrumental in the defeat of the ancient spirit of Tyranthraxus, that fell ghost what possessed a bronze dragon and used that form to rule Phlan a century or more ago!
Foss sits on a stool and scratches his well-trimmed beard before continuing, The journal tells of how Tyranthraxus fled below Phlan into a Pool of Radiance blow the old Valjevo Keep. Don't know what they would want from that book, it's more tales than anything that might be of use to anyone.
Lambrick: - The Lords and Lineages of Phlan was in the possession of Agin Lamark, a local noble that specializes in the histories of the Moonsea region and Phlan in particular, specifically genealogy and heraldry.
The book in question is called Lords and Lineages of Phlan. It is a catalogue of every noble house that has resided within Phlan from present day to as far back as seven centuries prior.
Lamarck walks over to the counter of his shop tracing his fingers along the dark wooden top before continuing, This book has been in my family for over two centuries, and has been my family's responsibility to add to it as the years pass.
The haughty noble gestures for you to follow and leads you to his workdesk, The book was secured within this drawer, locked and protected by powerful spellcraft. That being said, I have no inkling why this text would interest anyone. While it is old and rare, it is little more than a collection of lineages and notes made by scribe of the past and current noble houses.
He frowns slightly, In all honesty, it is a dreadfully ugly tome discussing a dull subject and cannot be expected to bring much of a profit.
---
Despite my family's long-standing claim to nobility, we are not actually related to the House Lamarck. In truth, the last surviving members of the Lamarck line dies nearly two centuries ago.
He pours himself some brandy from a bottle and takes a pull before continuing, My great, great grandfather made a couple of clever forgeries in the Lords and Lineages of Phlan, allowing my family to claim descent from the line. With no one to contest the claim, there was no doubt to the legitimacy.
You cannot breathe a word of this to anyone, I beg of you!
Sounds like an inside job by someone in the library? Someone with powerful magic? Other choice is to investigate Valejo Keep?
Rakish |
Ok, so...
A book on the weave, and only a few people knew it was in Aya's possession (library officials, and two wizards).
A book on a hero who defeated a possessed dragon a century ago. Also details where said spirit was last known to be.
A book on the noble lineage.
--------
My guess: someone is trying to bring that spirit back, and they want to know where it is, who it is, and how to do it.
That same person is also knowledgeable in magic, otherwise they wouldn't have known where to precisely screw with the wards to bypass them.
Aeshuura |
It's a good start, but there is still another piece that you have not encountered yet, though you could head back to the library to report your findings or continue your investigation under the guise of reporting your findings...
--
What would you like to do? ^_^
Glenda Huckleberry |
I think heading back to the library and asking about whether there's been a patron researching into these matters might be a good start. What do the rest think?
Fronar_Gossamar |
fyi. sorry for the delay. I was on vacation since last wed. I was sure I was going to be able to continue posting, but alas that wasn't in the cards. I am back now and would love to jump back in, if I didn't burn my bridge.
