Also, I was wondering if the DM will be utilizing a visual tool for interactive encounters or will we be using TOM (theatre of the mind) and all will be texted based from posts?

I will be doing both. Some encounters that are more technical will have a battlemap and some smaller encounters will be done with TotM.
If a battlemap is needed I will post up a link with grid coordinates on it so that can be used. I host maps on my own server and post them as .jpg for ease of use.

I will be traveling out of state today (Monday) so I will be out of pocket for most of the day. Once we get checked in late this evening I will get everything updated tonight.
Have Fun

Have Fun. Feel free to ask questions, interact with each other, etc.

Hmm. Can't access the map, which appears to require a Myth-Weavers log-in.
Updated Map Link. I also updated it in the campaign tab.
The map Gordrenn produces at The Yawning Portal:

Just a quick reminder...
I like to keep things moving along. With a group of eight it is very important that each player try to post a minimum of once per day Monday through Friday. I do understand weekends can be tough for some so they are optional days for everyone.
By posting at least once per day you ensure the story is moving and you are having a say in what is happening and others are not held up waiting on a response from your character.
I also understand real life creeps into our fun sometimes so if you are going to be away for a few days please let everyone know so that I can DMPC your character while you are away.
So far everything is moving along very smoothly. If anyone has any suggestions on how to improve things or comments on how things are running please let us all know by posting here.
Welcome to 'Night Below' everyone!!!

Agreed! You are doing a fantastic job so far. I can't wait to see where this goes.

Athelwyn Hemwallow |

Been itching to dive into a 5E game on here. Slim pickings on these forums typically, so this recruitment was a welcome change of pace. I actually played through The Night Below partially when I was a wee one and the module was new—I believe I was 11 or 12 at the time? Somewhere in that ballpark. Been two decades since then however, so I've forgotten a great majority of it.

Fronar is a chatty and curious little gnome, so throughout the journey on the caravan he would have asked everyone about their backgrounds. Thus if there is anything in each of your character's backstory that you would NOT have revealed to him, please explain so I can make sure I exclude it from his interactions. Thank you.
For general party dynamic so far... it would appear that the dwarves and possibly Siann would be bonding together more so than with any others in the party. Haven appears to be fairly reclusive and keeps to herself, beyond direct responses, with exception of Namora due to the connection of members of the faith. Namora comes across as blending with anyone in the party due to her general good nature.
Please feel free to let me know if I'm misinterpreting your ideas for your characters' personality thus far.

Grommund Geargrip |

Grommund keeps his past close, which makes him seem shady I'm sure. But, he is shady, so that's okay. He'd only offer up that he used to work in Bladur's Gate as an information broker and mercenary and he wanted to see the world, so he left. No other details are forthcoming.

Siann |

Siann considers Fronar as the opposite of what she seeks in herself, perfect discipline. Any attempt of communication by Fronar would have been greeted with a stony gaze and a polite but non-committal answer.
He might 'over-hear' Siann's conversations with Dorin and Grommund, an so will only have a fragmented knowledge of her history.

Athelwyn Hemwallow |

I would imagine, after a day or two of hesitation, Athelwyn would eventually get on well with Fronar given his general state of high spirits. As to her backstory, the only thing off-limits would be the details of her departing Halruaa, specifically regarding her family. She would try to play it off as not being close to them because of her strict academic regimen. As to why she left, she would unconvincingly imply she wanted to see the world—a partial truth.
Also, any specific requests for things appearing in the stat-line under our alias name?

Also, any specific requests for things appearing in the stat-line under our alias name?
Yes, the vitals. HP, AC, Stats and bonuses. Spell Slots and Trackables such as spells, ammo, abilities with limited uses. Also include what recovers them. SR=Short Rest, LR=Long Rest. Also your passive perception and passive investigation scores.
Abilities: Second Wind 1/1 SR
Basically whatever you think I should see at a quick glance without having to open your full sheet.

Namara al-Nasr |

Namara would be relatively forthcoming about her own history and reasons for being in the North.
Also: Updated profile, removing 3 gp and adding special abilities to stat-line.

DM Asmodeus |

I apologize if it seems like I am rushing things a bit in game. I still haven't found the groups pace yet but wanted to keep things moving along without getting bogged down into to many technicalities right off the bat.
There is also the fact that combat gives everybody something to do. So we shall see how the group handles their first skirmish.
Good luck!

Dorin Stonehammer |

NP - I posted in the GP Thread, but there is no penalty for firing into melee, but partial cover could be obtained on DM's ruling. In addition, diagonal movement does not cost extra. All squares are 5 feet worth of movement in any direction.

Haven Amberline |

Well, everyone else did it so I might as well share what my character would actually share as well. Pretty much everything I wrote in the background would be a closely guarded secret; she's not going to tell everyone she sees things or that she got kicked out of the temple back in Waterdeep. Haven's too prideful and a bit too concerned what other people think about her to do that. Instead, she'd just share the basic details of her life that aren't actually in the background I wrote so here goes...
Her and her brother were both orphaned at a young age, an illness claiming both of them according to her brother. For Haven, it was young enough that she doesn't even remember her parents so her brother's accounts are all she has to go by. The temple ended up adopting both of them, teaching them the ways of Lathander as well as providing a general education not available to most children growing up in Waterdeep. Even at a young age, Haven applied herself heart and soul to her lessons, promising to herself that she'd make sure no other kids had to be like her. As she grew into her teenaged years, Haven's role in the temple expanded, the girl finding herself scribing scrolls as well as assisting in wedding ceremonies and the childbirths that followed.

Dorin Stonehammer |

@DM Asmodeus: I gotta say, that is a ton of work to resolve one round of combat. Nicely done. I do want to suggest that we roll initiative separately at first and be allowed to act in order. I have no issue with the change in course that you provided to Dorin, but I would like to make those strategic decisions as a player and not leave them to the DM to guess at. That is a great deal of the fun in playing a melee character.

Dorin Stonehammer |

I do not so much care about the roll, but I need to consider my options based upon initiative order and the actions of others. I play in another game with DM Asmodeus and we go in order without the block actions and resolution.

DM Asmodeus |

I normally roll for initiative for everyone at the beginning of combat and then process in order. If a character wants to wait to post their action until I resolve people ahead of them that is fine. You also can place contingency actions in your OOC statement in case something changes.
The reason I had everyone post actions and roll initiative of their own for this combat was because of the nature of the surprise. We had a set of archers, a set of farmers who would reveal their true nature as well as a hidden ambusher.
Thus everyone posting their first action got the desired result of a chaotic engagement as things unfolded in the first round. I do believe that result was achieved anyway.

DM Asmodeus |

Just waiting on Haven and Athelwyn to post up since they are the first two in initiative before processing. Weekends are optional so no rush.
@ Siann
You might want to retcon your action of looking in the bush because last round she popped up and attacked you with two attacks and then disengaged and moved around the wagon to Haven. The ambusher is currently at P-25 so you obviously know she is no longer in the bush.

Siann |

Ah, don't know why I missed that....
retcon post coming up :)
Also, realized I'd forgotten to choose my maneuvers acquired from the feat Martial Adept. I took Parry and Riposte. Too late for that last attack, but ready for the next :)

DM Asmodeus |

Can I drop my bow, jump down off the cart, draw my sword and attack in the same turn?
Dropping your bow is a free action.
You aren't on the cart so you are already on the ground. You are directly behind the cart. Their is no room on the cart for anyone with the chest and rations on it. Fronar is the only one on something as he is on the mule.
Drawing your weapon counts as your one manipulate object action that you get every round.
Attack is your action.
That leaves you with a move as well if you want it as well as a bonus action if you have anything that works as one.

DM Asmodeus |

Farmer #2 attacks Siann with a scimitar.
Scimitar: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 piercing damage.
Farmer #1 attacks Namara with a scimitar.
Scimitar: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 piercing damage.
Siann, I am using your superiority dice to try to keep you up by reducing the above damage by:
Superiority: 1d6 ⇒ 2

DM Asmodeus |

Carlanis multi-attack with mace with advantage (Pack Tactics) taking first swing at Namara.
Mace: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Advantage: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 bludgeoning damage.
Carlanis multi-attack with mace with advantage (Pack Tactics) taking second swing at Siann.
Mace: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Advantage: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7 bludgeoning damage.

DM Asmodeus |

Do spells crit in 5e?
Yes they do. All dice rolled for damage during the attack is rolled again but without modifiers the second time.
So you just did 27 points of damage to the leader. Plus a chance for something special that might happen during your critical.
I'll get everything processed as soon as Dugwyn post his retcon.
