Dungeon Kobold |
The angry mob hasn't arrived yet, for reasons yet unknown. Some townsfolk are coming this way, but Racist Old Guy is the only one who's come into view.
Dungeon Kobold |
Outside, the old man glares at Tanith, but holds back. "Why should I believe you?" he growls. "The word of one priest over another? I worshiped Kord long before I met Forwell, and the Kordian priests in this city are a bunch of festering fools! He's the best thing to happen to our faith in years. And what are you?"
Sense Motive checks from Farrukh and Tanith.
Farrukh Al'Khatel |
Ah.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13
Balls.
"Nobody important. Just the people who've saved this city from not just one, but two insidious threats lurking under our feet."
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
Hearing the old man defame the late Varda makes Tanith clench his fists in anger.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
"Varda was a good man and the Muddle's suffered without him. The only fool here is you if you're going to continue falling for Forwell's tricks."
Dungeon Kobold |
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
Tanith's booming voice becomes a growl as he begins to pick up on the clues.
"You knew what Forwell was up to. You were part of it you piece of s%@@. Come here, I'll show you who the festering fool is."
I suspect Farrukh will turn him into a pulp before it matters but Tanith will move up and ready to hit him (nonlethally).
Farrukh Al'Khatel |
"Wait, he was in on it? I'm off my game today."
"You know, I'm still pissed about you insulting my friend too."
Heads I remember that a mob is coming and I don't want to be standing over the corpse of a respected member of society with blood on my hands, tails I don't.: 1d2 ⇒ 1
"You're lucky I don't feel like facing mob justice."
Farrukh steps in and (nonlethally) turns him into pulp.
I completely forgot the extra Power Attack damage I get at this level during the Phase Spider fight. -.-

Dungeon Kobold |
He is the old man shown outside on the map—the one Tanith moved towards. I've marked him with a red arrow.
Rynjin |
I AM where Tanith was on the map before, because last round I thought that's where Tanith and the old guy were. Suddenly he's 40 feet away from me.
I would have been able to get there last round too (with about 25 feet of movement to spare). And it makes my Readied action from last round make more sense.
Dungeon Kobold |
The old man is where he has been all along. Tanith moved this round. Had you double-moved, you would have been able to reach the indicated location with exactly no movement to spare. This round, you can full-attack as indicated above.
I will update shortly.
Dungeon Kobold |
Farrukh cuts shallowly along the man's forehead and neck, catching him severely off-guard.
Rodrigo is up.
Dungeon Kobold |
Rodrigo's mephit breathes fire again.
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 1
Reflex: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 121d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
This time, the fire breath proves substantially less effective, though it does burn away a few more.
Johannes, meanwhile, is horribly burned. He writhes on the ground, somehow still alive but screaming in pain.
Round 11: Forwell Hog:
Knowing its greatest threat is attempting to escape, the Forwell crawls and skitters, screeching, after the undine alchemist.
Hurt.
Hurt.
Hurt.
Carina takes: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 3) = 9 damage and must make another DC 22 Fortitude save.
As Carina struggles away from the swarm again, she realizes that the spiders are beginning to crawl upon each other, slowly coalescing into a form once more.
Round 11: Old Man/Angry Mob:
Initially off-balance (and badly bloodied) from Farrukh's attacks, the man recovers swiftly, slashing at the slayer with remarkable skill. Despite his age, he seems to know his weapon very, very well. As it cuts into Farrukh, it crackles with electric energy, zapping him repeatedly.
Longsword: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (3) + 21 = 241d20 + 16 ⇒ (4) + 16 = 201d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30
Crit?: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25
Rerolls: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (19) + 21 = 40
Crit?: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (17) + 21 = 38
Damage: 2d8 + 24 + 1d6 ⇒ (6, 2) + 24 + (6) = 381d8 + 12 + 1d6 ⇒ (4) + 12 + (1) = 17
Farrukh and Tanith see a number of townsfolk approaching from up and down the road. They look alarmed. A few of them look familiar—Doran and Nordan, the alchemist's part-elven sons; Yalexex, the arrogant artist, Mistress Crump; some of the workers from Wake's Construction warehouse, etc.
Round 11: You are up!
Dungeon Kobold |
In case you're wondering, the "rerolls" are in fact his rapidly adjusting strikes that are about to be parried or blocked. They seem to be a part of intensive training with the weapon he wields.
Carina Viera |
Fortitude Save vs. Nausea (Good Hope, Prayer): 1d20 + 7 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 7 + 2 + 1 = 19 *Action Point!*
Possible Boost?: 1d6 ⇒ 1
Possible Boost?: 1d6 ⇒ 4 <-- Using this one for a result of 22!
Carina manages to shake off the nausea again!
Round 11: Actions
Move Action: Move back to Astraden
Standard Action: Throw a Fire Bomb at the Forwell-swarm
She runs back to the half-orc priestess' side, throwing a bomb as she moves.
Hurt.

"Finally, something I WANT to do to you."
Ranged Touch Attack (PBS, Precise, Good Hope, Prayer): 1d20 + 9 + 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 9 + 1 + 2 + 1 = 16
Damage? (PBS, Good Hope, Prayer): 4d6 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (1, 1, 5, 4) + 3 + 1 + 2 + 1 = 18
Dungeon Kobold |
One of the horsefly swarms is burnt to a crisp by Carina's bomb. The spiders, meanwhile, fall by the thousands—yet more rise up in their place, chittering angrily, as a solid shape begins to form once more.
Rodrigo, Tanith, Farrukh, Eben and Astraden are up.
Astraden Limhaare |
Astraden points a finger at the silver dagger on her belt, muttering, "Tem ne meneye vozdukh," and sends a little greenish spark into the hilt. Suddenly, all sound around her ceases completely, and she runs after the spider swarm with the dagger in one hand.
Round 9: Cast silence on my silver dagger (standard action), movement (move action), and draw silver dagger as part of movement (free action). Bear's endurance lasts 74 rounds, prayer lasts 4 rounds, magic circle against evil lasts 797 rounds, and silence lasts 8 rounds.
Farrukh Al'Khatel |
Aight, I'm ripping this guy several new holes. And I forgot Haste last round. Crap.
Farrukh, pissed, decides to just try and kill the old fart.
"All right that's it. The kid gloves are off, a*&++$&."
Slash: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (12) + 13 = 25

Right. Not sure how this affects Eben's concentrated spells—does he still need components for subsequent rounds?
Rynjin |
Right. Not sure how this affects Eben's concentrated spells—does he still need components for subsequent rounds?
Components are only necessary to cast a spell, not maintain it once it's up.
Dungeon Kobold |
Farrukh cuts brutally into the old man until, on his last slash, his klar blade slices straight into his throat and brings him bloodily down.
The townsfolk approaching stop and stare, wide-eyed with horror.
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
Tanith hesitates at the sight of the mob. How many more of them had been in league with Forwell?
"Stay back!" Mega-Tanith warns. "Forwell's been playing all of us. He was feeding the old folks of the Muddle to a giant spider. This bastard was in on it."
The big man pauses to reflect on the fact that the story didn't sound any less crazy no matter how many times he repeats it.
"The Fire. Varda's Death. It was all a setup to turn you from Kord's strength and into Forwell's fangs."
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |

Tanith joins them.
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
Tanith positions himself to keep the mob from stumbling into the shrine and becoming swarm chow.
Dungeon Kobold |
Note the people are coming from two directions.
Rodrigo and Eben are up.
Eben MacTeague |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Eben is vaguely aware of Tanith and Farrukh outside, trying to make yelping excuses for public murder, but at the moment he's too focused on the remaining bugs indoors to realize things are about to get ugly.
Instead, he takes a step to fire off another snapdragon at the remaining swarm of flies. Johannes, for his part, crawls blindly along the floor, leaving a glistening trail of burned skin and blood behind him like a macabre slug. If only the poor fool hadn't had his yees devoured by that last swarm, he might have known that he was crawling headlong into the other one...
snapdragon: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Eben turns to face the re-assmebling form of Forwell. "... ... ... ...", he says smugly, deeply pleased that he just thought of the greatest witticism of his life that would be appropriate only under these extremely specific circumstances.
5-foot step, standard action to concentrate on Johannes, move action to shoot a snapdragon.
Good hope lasts 72 rounds, moment of greatness lasts 73 rounds, cat's grace lasts 73 rounds, abundant ammunition lasts 75 rounds, snapdragon fireworks lasts 4 rounds.
Dungeon Kobold |
Eben burns away the rest of the swarm as Forwell reels from the biting quip.
Dungeon Kobold |
The mephit moves over to the other swarm—Forwell—and waits for its breath weapon to recharge. It waits a moment, then, clearly bored, takes a swipe at the prone Johannes.
Claw: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 Damage: 1d3 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
It chatters something at Rodrigo in Ignan, shrugging.
Round 12: Forwell
A high-pitched, clicking laugh comes from the doorway. The swarm crawls there, and, before everyone's eyes, rises and stands. A man made of spiders, devoid of face or feature but slowly taking on the basic shape of Forwell Hog, laughs at the lot. "Edane did not know the half of my work. A bitter old man with too many grudges, too many stinging wounds, too many words he wanted too desperately to hear. Just another useful maggot within the great rotting corpse that is your fair city. Come and fight me, if you dare. The outcome matters little. Soon the Gem of the Flanaess will crack and crumble away entirely, leaving only the vermin to feed upon your bloated, walking carcasses."
As he speaks, spiders seem to crawl from the dirt and grass, replenishing their numbers.
As a reminder, "the Gem of the Flanaess" is another term for the Free City of Greyhawk.
Seeing Forwell's monstrous face, several in the crowd scream and run. Most linger, however—Nordan and Doran, the part-elven brothers; a sleepy-looking Tarquin; a vaguely familiar-looking man in his thirties; Mistress Crump; Ageelia from the Yarpick Roast; Souf the lizardman; Jharan Hubris of the tattoo parlor, and a short, balding human recognizable as Meply of Meply's Alchemical Curatives. They hang back nonetheless, all showing varying shades of wariness.
Round 12: You are up!
Forwell can be attacked once again, though it has DR 15/- and seems to be healing somewhat now. It retains its vulnerability to the bombs.
Carina Viera |
Round 12: Actions
Standard Action: Blast Forwell with another bomb--a FROST one, this time! Excluding Astraden from the blast.
Carina glares at the Forwell-beast. "Too bad you won't be around to see it, abomination."
She draws another bomb vial, this one misted over and with frost trailing from its cork. She throws it after giving it a good shake!
Ranged Touch Attack (PBS, Precise, Good Hope, Prayer): 1d20 + 9 + 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 9 + 1 + 2 + 1 = 31
Cold Damage (PBS, Good Hope, Prayer): 4d6 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (5, 5, 6, 5) + 3 + 1 + 2 + 1 = 28
EDIT: Forgot to post this: if applicable, Forwell needs to make a DC 17 Fortitude save to avoid being Staggered for 1 round.
Dungeon Kobold |
Carina's bomb lands straight in the center of the Forwell's chest cavity just as the spiders crawl over it to complete the coalescence.
BOOM.
Frozen spider-bites are sent flying—one striking Johannes in the eye socket—as the swarm is nearly blasted to bits. The figure trembles, shakes, barely still standing.
Dungeon Kobold |
Correction: Astraden had the area silenced, so he moved outside before speaking. Carina will also have to move to throw, and she probably can't speak.
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
Tanith is equal parts impressed and annoyed at how calm the crowd is about the whole reveal.
"It'd help if you guys backed up now", the big kordite explains. "We're going to kill the monster and we wouldn't want any of you getting hurt."
Dungeon Kobold |
The northern crowd is already starting to edge away as Forwell moves nearer to them.
Astraden Limhaare |
Astraden grunts in annoyance and steps into the doorway, lobbing the dagger point-blank towards Forwell's center. She pulls her rapier from its sheath silently.
Thrown silver dagger (good hope, prayer, haste): 1d20 + 5 + 2 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 5 + 2 + 1 + 2 = 24 Silver, piercing (good hope, prayer): 1d4 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 2 + 2 + 1 = 8
Round 10: Five-foot step (no action), attack (standard action), and draw weapon (move action). Bear's endurance lasts 73 rounds, prayer lasts 3 rounds, magic circle against evil lasts 796 rounds, and silence lasts 7 rounds.
Carina Viera |
Alright--Move Action: Move to get Forwell in my line of sight, and my quip gets silenced.
Dungeon Kobold |
The dagger passes through Forwell's masses, skewering a single spider.
