The Christmas madness seems to be setting in earlier than I had anticipated here. I may be able to post occasionally (at least I was able to get the Beta Playtest Index out on the Pathfinde RPG boards), but that might be it for this year, what with the festive season and then visiting relatives (again, aaarrgh!). Thank you all very much for the past seven or eight months of postings, and if I don't 'see' you before then, Happy 2009.

After several minutes of plodding through the snow, the wooden stockade that surrounds the barracks of the mercenaries of the Company of the Sable Bow comes into Bronx’s view. On a slight rise overlooking the town from the south, the outer defence of the encampment is constructed of rough pine logs and has the air of something put together a number of years ago by people not quite sure how long they might be staying, although the wooden skeleton of a watch-tower that looks to be new work rises above the top of the stockade at one point Bronx passes as he makes for the front gate of the compound.
Bronx reaches the front gate, which is currently shut although the way that the snow has been trampled to ice and scraps of frozen earth tell Bronx that there has been a lot of people going back and forth from it in recent hours. A concession to the population of the town, there are two shuttered slots (also currently shut) let into the gate, one at around head height for humans and one at the equivalent for halflings or gnomes. (Presumably dwarves have to stoop or squint up.)

“The security and comfort of my genuine guests is of the paramount importance.”, the middle-aged halfling woman brusquely addresses Ashan’s remarks. “And after what he was doing to those nasty beetle things last night, I wouldn’t be surprised if anyone in charge of them had done something to the real Mr. Murnig, and sent some sort of nasty creature along to get at his friends.”
She looks at Seebo, and seems unconvinced by his remarks.
“Let’s take a look in the room, and makes sure everything’s all right, shall we?”, she says producing a bunch of keys.

DC 12 Sense Motive:

You have a sense that any attempt to bully or intimidate this woman is most likely to rile her up, unless it’s a really crushing effort. She doesn’t seem the sort to enjoy others coming in here ‘taking uninvited liberties’ in her establishment, and seems likely to be either the owner or a very highly placed aide of the owner.

The halfling woman moves past Seebo and Ashan, goes to the door, inserts a key in the lock and opens the door, the other halflings coming forward to peer around her sides into the room.
The room inside, apparently a guest bedroom for a couple of people (one ‘gnome’ or ‘halfling’ sized, and one of ‘big folk’ size, from what remains of the beds), has been obviously and quite thoroughly ransacked, furniture pulled away from walls and overturned, the mattresses pulled off the beds, and the sheets tossed around. A number of clothes and other personal possessions for someone of human or larger size have been also scattered about. The boarding house staff just stand there and stare, aghast.

Most of the clothes and personal possessions look pretty similar to ones which Seebo remembers Nim as owning.

Sorry for the delay; I had forgotten Ashan/Rob is on holiday, and was waiting in case e wanted to respond there!

Seebo looks at he throom stunned at what he sees. With a look of fear and worry on his face Seebo turns to the halfling woman, pleading,"Even if you won't take me to my brother, please assure me that he is alright."

Back from holidays and posting again as of today.

"Sorry for being a bit short with you Mrs; Its been a bit of a shock catching up with Seebo this way.
I was very concerned for his life earlier."

Catching a glimpse of the room, Ashan adds.
"Looks like your right to be suspicious, someone, or something, obviously thinks little of Seebo's and Nim's posessions."
"I hope they have exhausted their wrath, don't want to meet them too soon with what they have done here."

Ashan mutteres under his breath to Seebo.
"Looks like trouble is looking for you again."

The maid doesn’t look very convinced, shaking her head (but Nim is used to seeing other people ‘surprised at how brave he is’) before opening the door and heading back out into the corridor.

In the background a door is opening and the maid is coming out of that room she went into.
Hmmm. I'm trying to work out here exactly how the staff currently gaping at Seebo & Nim's room will react. I'll try to come back later this evening (UK time) with more on that.

Sense Motive Check=26 “Well, I never.”, the middle-aged halfling woman says indignantly. “Poor master Murnig, having this happening to his belongings. There’s going to be someone answering for this if I find out who it is and catch them in these parts again.” She turns back to Seebo. “So let’s hear it again, what your explanation is for who you are, and where you say you’ve been, and let’s hear it slowly and in detail this time.”
She doesn't appear to be quite so hostile now, so it seems as if something you've said or done has had an impact.

"Wuld you like my story or his?"
"I can only fill in from when I came across his unconsious body being brought back from the mine offices, but, I would be happy to tell you."
"Mr Aumbril Leafgreen was most helpful in bringing him around."
"But I better let Seebo start."
Ashan will then shut up and defer to Seebo, hoping it will help his memory.
If Seebo is unable to relate the story, Ashan will give an account of taking him to Aumbril's residence, and a vague overview of reviving Seebo. Being especially sure to embellish where he can.

To nobody in particular, Seebo mutters, " and I suppose we should call the sherriff."

“Well it sounds most unconvincing to me. You don’t seem like that nice Mr. Seebo Murnig of last night at all, but I’m sure that one of them brain-eating doppley-thingummies or fey would have had a much better story.”, the halfling woman snorts.
The maid who emerged from the room has by now come forward and murmured something in the middle-aged halfling woman’s ear.
“The two of you don’t sound threatening.”, the middle-aged halfling woman resumes. “I’m sure that the other Mr. Murnig can sort the pair of you out, if you’re up to any mischief. The poor fellow, his belongings being gone over like this in this establishment.”
She shakes he head and mutters some particularly strong swearwords in halfling.

To no-one inparticular, very quietly under his breath.
"Oh boy, don't cross that woman."
Ashan will quietly say to Seebo.
"Cmon Seebo, I'll help you straighten things up here. Looks like someone has it in for you, and your in no state to defend yourself at the moment."
Turning towards the halfling woman who appears to be in charge.
"Please if Seebo's brother Nim shows up, could you let him know, Seebo is here. Please also if you could let him know Ashan Ackanya is with him it would be very much appreciated."
Ashan will then head towards the tossed room.
"Better get started if your going to have somewhere to be able to rest up, I think you still need more shut-eye time."


I will update the character sheet for Ashan to level 2 this week.

Apologies for the hold up in responses. I have been reading the Round 2 Superstar entries, and have almost ploughed my way through all those villains. I hope to have a response within 24 hours.

I have checked the house rules for levelling up which I posted last year on the first page of the Discussion thread, and those characters with sufficient experience for a second level can apply the Base Attack Bonus for their next level. (Hit points, skill increases, etc, will not kick in until after rest and possibly longer downtime.)

"Mr. Murnig is quite nearby and has good reason at present for being discreet.", the middle-aged halfling woman says, eyeing Seebo and Ashan warily. "He might be interested to see you however."

Bronx/Pres Man:
I can appreciate if you have had some reason for not feeling able to post on here for a while, but I will have to consider Bronx's future position, if I do not hear from you by the end of this month.

Looking at Ashan for confirmation, "we promise not to leave this room until you come for us, is this acceptable to you?"

"It's Mrs. Prestwick." the middle-aged halfling woman says, emphasising the 't' at Seebo and giving him a particularly dubious look. "For someone as claims to have lost their memory, you seem to be getting that much the same as before."
Okay.... interesting point here as to why Seebo has been consistently getting it wrong if he has lost memory of the recent period; something from childhood? Long-term habit from someone else he knew of that surname? I look forward to this explanation.... :D

Looking somewhat embarrassed, Seebo says, " I am sorry for my mispronounciation Mrs Prestwick, please believe me it wasn't intentional. I'm still trying to understand what has happened and what is going on, I really meant no offence."
Then thinking about what Mrs Prestwick had said, "You say I did this before?"
"I wonder if other things like this will happen to me. I wonder if names or events will suddenly come to me."
"I really think I need to rest"

Sorry about the delay; on top of other distractions (work experience placement) I’ve been having difficulty reliably connecting to the Paizo boards over the past couple of days, and I gave up trying to reach the boards on Thursday.
As a further note, there may be difficulty this coming weekend, the computer being in the conservatory, and temperatures of -9 being predicted by some forecasters, which will make for uncomfortable posting conditions, even with a coat and gloves.
Seebo & Ashan:

Mrs. Prestwick makes an annoyed ‘harrumphing’ noise, but seems otherwise inclined to offer no further comment and, retrieving her key from the door, makes to go.
Unless you have anything else to add she will leave, pulling the door shut behind her.

As Ashan continues to tidy up the room, particular details here and there of the way that it has been ransacked begin to remind him of the search technique of the notorious halfling ne’er-do-well ‘Jaego Houndsfoot’ (plus various aliases), although Deadsnows seems a little too small for Jaego to be out here for any reason other than someone having paid him to be here for them.

Temperature slightly improved in the conservatory tonight…

Forgot how to link a roll, had to try a more than once. Original rolls were sucess, fail, now this one. Got smart, didn't close the window for the third roll until I had it coppied correctly.

What Ashan can recall about Jaego is that he has a reputation for being very good at sneaking round after people, getting into places where he wasn't supposed to be, and getting out of town in a hurry, if he thinks trouble is coming. There are rumours Jaego has been occasionally commissioned to steal items, or to spy on the doings of important people (occasionally from under cover of a disguise). Whilst he is reputed to have a range of gnome/halfling/very small dwarf disguises and a broad number of accents at his disposal he is believed to be a halfling from somewhere down south originally.

There is the click of a key in the door, and then Mrs. Prestwick comes in. She looks at Nim standing there with his sword drawn, and nods approvingly, before pushing the door shut behind her.
"Good. There are some funny people about- nasty people. I'm dreadfully sorry about this Mr, Murnig, but someone's broken into your room by the look of things and threw your belongings all over the place."
She sounds very annoyed (and maybe a little bit embarrassed) about this.

“Well him, or at least the thing which looks like him – I hope Flora told you that we’ve seen something like him around here with a halfling friend – we caught just outside the door to your room – that’s the room you and your brother were renting, just down the corridor – and he made some claim of having lost his memory – which was hard to believe seeing as how he still called me ‘Mrs. Preswick’, if you please. Anyway, he and the halfling made a very convincing display of dismay when we opened the door to check your room, and I’m not sure if they are bad things or not; anyway, I don’t have much time to stand around and gossip, with dinner coming up, and so I gave them the benefit of the doubt for now. But your brother – or at least the ‘thing’ if it is a thing looking like him – and the halfling are currently in your brother and your room, and a clerk will shortly be taking them a key.” Mrs. Prestwick adopts a dubious tone of voice. “And they’re asking to see you.”

with nim having lived with lots of gnomes, i imagine he has been the butt of many jokes and illusions, I was thinking that maybe the brothers would have a way of nim making sure that seebo was who he claimed to be.
perhaps seebo has told nim to ask questions that only seebo would know the answer to, BUT nim must think of the wrong answer while doing so, does that make sense?

der correct answers are 6 and dwarfs but when you ask der questions you must not fink of der right answer because a bad fairy might be able to see what you are finking, if he give der good answers please send him in, also what is der name of der halfing?

Seebo is just getting comfortable, and Ashan has the room halfway tidy, when a knock comes at the door.
"Mrs. Prestwick; I need another word with you, if you're still there."
(It sounds like the halfling woman of a few minutes ago.)

After a few moments and the rattle of a key, Mrs. Prestwick comes in. This time she does not have any company. She folds her arms and looks at Seebo and Ashan.
"I have questions as to ask you, since Mr. Murnig won't come himself at the moment.", she states.

Ashan:
For now sorcerer spells from the PHB or which are on the lists in Player's Guide to Faerûn only. You can take the 'less than average' option for hit points if you want (Eg 2 for a d4 sorcerer); I am not yet decided on what to do with regard to if you want to roll hit points, having had a quick check on the discussion thread but found nothing there under levelling.
