Submitting Chandria for your consideration. I haven't filled out much of the crunch yet, wanting approval on the usage of the Tengu race first, but the backstory and hook have been established in my profile. I'll get to the crunch this evening and tomorrow.

And now the fluff is done, as well.

Backstory:
Calah had spent most of her life at sea in one posting or another, but it was always on somebody else's ship. Almost foolhardy in her eagerness, she quickly earned her a reputation for taking chances. She was as good a sailor as any, and was a more than servicable navigator, but her abilities were overshadowed by her risktaking. This was reflected in any berth she was offered, and she soon decided that she would have to strike out on her own, and soon.

One fine summer day, she took her biggest risk yet. A consortium of minor captains had formed to purchase a sailing ship and a cargo of steel ingots meant to make tools and weapons in Sargava and offered her a partnership. The risks involved were sizeable. While transporting their own cargo meant they got to pocket the whole of the profits instead of giving it to some merchant in exchange for a small cut, if anything happened, they would be out the cost of both the cargo and possibly even the ship. Of course, Calah accepted on the spot. She lacked the finances to take part though, so she needed to seek financial backing from elsewhere. She found that backing in the form of Sebastiaan Witting, a man of substantially less than savory reputation rumored to have connections all through the Shackles, including Firegrass Isle.

With her new backer fronting her share of the money, Calah signed on as the second mate and navigator of the Flying Cloud, sailing out of Port Peril. Calah charted a course for Eledar and it was smooth sailing from there, with Calah trying to work out how many runs she would have to do before earning enough to repay Witting and then purchase her own ship and crew. Unfortunately, it was not to be. One night shortly before dawn, they were attacked by a ship out of Firegrass Isle. During the fighting, Flying Cloud lost her masts and caught fire, and the last thing Calah remembers of that terrible event was screaming as she was trapped under a section of burning masthead. When she regained consciuosness, she was in the ship's boat with a handful of others, and was informed that the Flying Cloud had burned to the waterline. In addition to the horrific burns, the event utterly crushed her confidence. Upon returning to Port Peril she sold her belongings before giving the money earned and her jewelry to Witting as a down payment for what she owed him.

After a few months of making minute payments to Witting, Calah went to the Formidably Maid to drown her sorrows, and then went down to the docks to watch the ocean. After the turn her life had taken, she almost welcomed the sharp pain and sudden darkness.

Appearance:
Calah is of average height and weight for her people, wiclear blue eyes, dark sea green hair and skin the color of seafoam. Cala has burns on the left side of her head and neck, her left forearm, and the back of her left hand. Though hidden by her clothing, those burns are connected down her side and extend to her back and halfway down her thigh. There are tanlines on her wrists and fingers from where she had long worn bracelets and rings until very recently. Her clothes, while not rich in cut or fabric, were probably very nice when they were new, but are now somewhat shabby, and the fabric is a different color where fancy piping had been removed.

Motivation:
Calah desires to return to sea both for the sea in and of itself, and she desperately needs to earn the money to repay her backer. After being shanghaied, her goal is to get free, since being pressganged is unlikely to fill her coffers.

Three Questions:

Favourite Color- Midnight Blue

Favourite Meal- A nice filet of Spot with potatos and cornbread.

Theme Tune- Maybe Falling Down by Duran Duran? It seems to encapsulate the whole "life falling apart" thing rather well. I don't really know anything thematically appropriate.

Trying to figure out what to make.

Very interested! I got into a Skull & Shackles as my first PbP but it died during our first ship battle so I was really hoping to find another one! I'll just rework the character I had in it to fit your format once I get home from work and post here once that's done!

Oh and questions on the languages, in the inner sea guide it says that human nationalities start out with both common and their native tongue. Do you follow this?

I am back with Aviz fully tweaked and prepared!

Backstory All in the profile

Appearance All in the profile

Motivation Revenge on the elf who killed his father. That's what he tells people anyways. Down deeper he has a desire to be a part of a culture or group that accepts him for who he is, people that don't look at him with fear and hatred.

Favorite Colour Grey. It's the color of steel and iron, and it's the color of the mountains that he likes to spend time in.

Favorite Meal Goat leg with cranberry sauce. It's something Fuero found in an old book about strix and used to make for him.

Theme Tune Two Steps From Hell - Protectors of the Earth. Somebody had to take it :P

Dotting

Everything looks good Spade. If you could put it all in to a profile so I can see it all in the one place, I'd appreciate it.

All good too Edward. Thanks for the application. I might have some questions later but for now it is good.

Tengu are perfectly acceptable Chandria. No feathers ruffled here with that choice. Campin Carl is bringing a Strix for selection. You two are birds of a feather it seems.

Yup, Common and language of nationality Timeskeeper.

Looking good CampinCarl

Uh...I've never done play by post on these forums before, so I've no idea what you're talking about. Profile?

Spade, this is my first pbp as well. I'm still a super greenhorn when it comes to source prompts, quoting, spoilers, dice rolls, etc.

Spade wrote:

If you go to your account page, you can make an alias for the forums with the name of your character. Then, in the "profile" tab of that aliases' page, you can put all the information about the character that profile represents. At least that's how I've always done it.

For example, this profile is Sidewinder2k's alias for the character I'll be submitting. If you click on my name at the top of my post, it will take you to my profile that will be filled in with all the character information.

@The Changing Tide: I'm not sure if you saw my question regarding profile formatting, but just in case I'll restate it. Would you have a problem with me using a slightly different format for my profile than the one you've provided? You can see my template on any of my other aliases. If you'd still prefer yours, then I'll use it of course.

If you click My Account up on the bar above, you are brought to a page where you can set up Messageboard Aliases. Create a new alias, with your characters name and a suitable Avatar pic. When you have it created, click on it, click on the Profile section and click Create Profile. Then enter all of your character information, in the style that I asked for, or in Campin Carls style. Thanks guys.

Sorry Ondir, no it is okay. Go ahead.

you need a profile done up? I can do that

Yes please Edward.

Ondir can you note crit threat ranges for your weapons in your profile please? Thanks.

The Changing Tide wrote:

Can do. I'll put them up in the main reference stat block where I have attack bonus and damage. The profile is still very much under construction, and half cobbled together from a template copied from another alias.

I'm in the process of getting everything transferred over and I'll let you know as soon as it is completed!

ok here is sasha's profile

Sasha is missing a Drawback and Background skills, if I am right.

@ALL Please note background skills separately from regular skills. Thank you.

Welp, here I go again with my particularly crazy plan. Just dotting for now, but after a bit of polish for this game specifically I intend to submit this here character from a previous PbP Skull and Shackles game that died after one post. A bit of an oddball concept, but after you hear my pitch, we'll see if you're into it.

Hmm... A Paladin? Okay. I'm looking forward to this pitch. And I am formulating some possible counter proposals, but lets here what you have to say first.

drawback is Warded Against Nature

I did not use background skills, I'll adjust that then.

Like this?

ok all updated

Calah could you break up your spoilers more? Apart from that it looks good.

Thanks Sasha

I'll edit my profile to split the skills tonight! Other than that, "captain" Bleepos Droppo is here for business :)

Looks good Bleepo, just one more thing though and this is a note for ALL - When running up your Message board alias, if your character is not human, could you include your racial abilities in a Spoiler. Thanks guys

Alrighty, I don't have all the numbers as finalized as I'd like, or the formatting set up according to your preferences just yet, but since my idea is a bit off-kileter, here's the basics before I put in too much time. Presenting:

Zale Trelebor, Paladin of Besmara

Background:
Since his youth in the Varisian city of Riddleport, Zale had known of piracy. His family had long dealt with the thieves of the sea, seedy merchants and double-dealing traders all, but Zale chose to walk a different path. Blessed with an innate sense of fair play and an unimpeachable honor, he made his way to the Temple of Iomedae, where his strong sword arm (and chiseled jaw) soon served him well.

A newly-initiated Paladin on his first tour of duty, Zale was gifted with a vision while staying the night in a sleepy provincial coastal village. In his dreams, Iomedae appeared to him. Besmara, the Queen of all Pirates and Goddess of Strife, had noticed this village's unusual visitor. She was there, then, a fiery redhead wearing a tricorn hat and a lusty grin. She offered him an impossible choice: To save the lives of the entire village, he must bind himself to Besmara's will. In return, the Black Lady would turn aside the impending pirate raid that was destined to raze the village to the ground, and keep such raids away for as long as he obeyed her will.

Iomedae interceded then and laid down additional terms: Besmara could require nothing of Zale that would force him to break his paladin's vows. The dream image of the Pirate Queen grinned her wild, sinister grin, spat on her palm, and offered it to Zale. With a grimace, he took her hand, and the bargain that would shape the rest of his life was struck.

He woke with a start, thinking for a moment that the entire experience must have been a dream brought on by the anxiety of his mission - but on the back of his hand there lay the proof. The night before, Iomedae's holy sword was emblazoned there, a tattoo proclaiming his devotion to the Light of the Sword. Today, the sword was still there: but thrust behind the skull and crossbones.

For a few weeks, he wandered, unsure now of his purpose or destination, until he arrived unexpectedly in the town of Port Peril, where he resolved to stay for the night at a tavern called the Formidably Maid. He decided to bend his vows ever so slightly that night and drown his sorrows in a single mug of ale...and then he awoke, in pain and darkness, to the sounds of a creaking ship at sea.

Besmara had clearly decided it was time to put her new Paladin to use.

There you have it. Bound into a deal to serve Besmara in exchange for innocent lives (granting him the Besmara's Blessing campaign trait), he's off to a life of piracy. There are a couple issues with this that I think we might be able to work around, mostly relating to the paladin's code of conduct - and a few others I'm not sure about. Obviously, he wouldn't be able to kill (or tolerate the cold-blooded killing of) any innocent folks. Assisting in robbing them, I think he can get away with under the umbrella of fulfilling his oath and thus protecting the village, as long as he doesn't directly profit from the plunder himself. What the crew does with it isn't his concern, but he wouldn't partake unless it was from other pirates (which an awful lot of spoils are, so that should work out). As far as a position on the ship goes, Zale would actually make a pretty decent Captain, and such a position would help ease his conscience about being piratical - he would end up leading people on a Robin Hood-esque sort of adventure, robbing other pirates and evil Cheliaxians and whatnot. That said, in my head I mostly see him as a First Mate or Bosun type, keeping the rest of the crew in line and curbing their piratical excesses.

Description:
Standing just shy of six feet, Zale cuts a dashing figure with his blue eyes, short dusty blonde hair and chiseled features. His build is muscular from long hours training with sword and armor, but he isn't as thickly built as many swordsmen. Given his druthers, he dresses in a faintly Varisian fashion, bright colors and accessories in abundance. On the back of his left hand there is a strange tattoo, depicting the Radiant Sword of Iomedae with the sunburst hilt hidden behind the skull and crossbones.

So there's my mad idea. If you don't think we can make it work, that's totally understandable, it is a bit weird. Should that be the case, I do have an alternate proposal along similar lines.

Now then, for info about me and some thoughts on mechanics.

  • Generally speaking, I can post about once a day, twice if I happen to catch it at the right time.
  • I actually own, and have read through, the entire first volume of the AP with the intent to run it for my local group, but the scheduling fell through, so we never got started. Thus, I'm pretty intimately familiar with the first arc, but not much after that. I'm fairly confident in my ability to keep player and character knowledge separate, though.
  • If he works out, then in combat, Zale the paladin would focus on being a tank. Front line melee, possibly seguing into the Bodyguard feats later on. Out of combat, he would have some very fascinating roleplay opportunities as a moderately unwilling but nonetheless hardworking participant in the day-to-day of piracy, and a major help on those rare occasions we have to play nice. As far as utility, he'd be hitting up Diplomacy, as well as a decent Climb and Profession (sailor) to help out aboard ship. (I may also switch around his Strength and Dexterity and eventually multiclass into Swashbuckler around 3rd level, but I'm not sure yet)

  • I did include all of my racial abilities under my "Special Abilities" spoiler, if that's alright.

Also I wanted to check on drawbacks to make sure this was ok. I took the attached drawback, and the item in question I wanted it to apply to was the fauchard he took from his father's corpse, but since he started with his gear gone then he would start with the doubt drawback until he reacquired his fauchard. Let me know if that's alright!

    Backstory- To the profile!

Appearance- This! Well something like it. Hair and eyes aren't the right color.

Motivation- Fame! To out shine all others

    Favorite Color- Aqua

Favorite Meal- Crab on a bed of rice

Theme Tune- I actually had some trouble with this one. Had three songs in mind for this one and a friend picked Blank Space.

    Dotting. :)

Don't want to steal the thunder from any newer members of the boards, but I'll put something up if I can settle on a concept. I'd reuse one from a failed S&S campaign, but so much stuff has come out since then...

Bleepos Mate, we miss you! Leekoo's taken up your captain's hat since you left our evil little band.

Changing, how do you wish to examine 3rd party material. I've got a previous character that will make a smashing pirate.

I'm not sure which character template I should use. Sorry this is my first time.

Done. Well, 'done' aside from the prose background though that should be pretty apparent from the statistics.

If I may present to you monsieur Eskilline Mendric the Fourth - charming, wealthy, lackadaisical prat on vay-kay from the family vineyards outside of Oppara.

Why is she eating that keyboard?

I believe he wants you to copy and paste the template he has spoilered in the first post. (The GM might want you to pop your alignment in there somewhere as well. Oh, and maybe spells to if you got 'em.) Elsewise you can look at the one hidden behind the handsome, boyish face to the left to get an idea of what he want's the character sheet/profile page to look like. I of course took some liberties with it. My 'Merican spell check made me remove all the unnecessary vowels for instance. Go ahead, click it. You know you want to.

Sidewinder2k posting with the completed profile for Ondir Stormeye.

He hopes to one day become a notorious pirate captain in his own right, and one day recover his father's ship and carry on the notorious pirate legacy that was left to him.

Ondir will make a pretty decent front-line/mid-line combatant, being equally as good at short (throwing range) combat and melee combat as a damage dealer. He would also make a pretty good ship captain with his fairly high charisma score, though if someone who is also selected is far more set on the captain's chair, he will also take the first mate's position!

All of the background information you requested is contained in spoilers towards the bottom of the profile, after all of the gameplay information. Let me know if you need any further information and I'll provide it ASAP!

I really hope Ondir gets selected for the game. I've heard of Skull and Shackles, but never had the opportunity to actually run through it. The chance to play an actual pirate would be a great time!

Not done yet at all with crunch yet. Making a Human Chelaxian Corsair (Fighter), with possible levels in maybe sorcerer and or cleric depending on the need of the party.

Backstory Gupson was just a boy of about 13 when he joined the Chelish Navy as a simple cabin boy. His mother, he had been told, had died during childbirth and his father was always on business, leaving him with his grand mother. His grandmother was a strict woman and a firm believer in diabolism. An elegant painting of Thrune proudly presented in their living room of her home of Macini. Gupson hated her with a passion, often escaping during the night to watch the ships go by as they sailed in to port.

It was a strange feeling he would get as he watched them go by, a certain calling that he could never shake. At 12 he had run away from home, and the next year he was enlisted in the Navy of Cheliax. A natural sailor, he quickly rose among the rank of a midshipman by the age of 19. He showed exceptional skill with a proper attitude. However as he got older, was found to have a rather unnatural temper, getting into fights with other seaman. This brought a rather significant block to any more rise in rank. It was only later that he would be then reassigned as second lieutenant in the Chelish Marines, a place where his temper and ability was well used.

The active combat on the high seas against pirate vessels and the stray ship of an opposing nation brought him a joyful state, resembling that of an artist. By age 35, he retired as a full lieutenant and had traveled most, if not all of the inner sea. But the sudden change back into the average life of a civilian did not please him. He yearned for the sea again So, after talking with some old friends, he arranged passage for himself into the Shackles. After arriving, much of it become rather hazy as he and his friends had decided to go out drinking.

Appearance Chelaxian in look, with black hair and green eyes. He stands about 5'7" and has a few minor scars on his hands. He is rather clean shaven and likes to dress in a manor appropriate for sea travel. At the time, he is 36 years old.

Motivation Gupson is rather familiar with life at sea and yearns to continue it.

    Favorite Color Chelaxian Red

Favorite Meal Biscuits and gravy served with a glass of fresh orange juice, with a helping of corned beef.

Favorite Tune Whiskey In the Jar

Zale Trelebor- Okay Zale, that is acceptable. I'll take you in to consideration.

Campin Carl- That Drawback is perfect for the game, I like it. Looking good.

    Esmarelda- All looking good.

The Indescribable / Maria- I'm going over them case by case so either link me to them on d20pfsrd, or copy / paste the information and send me a PM with it spoilered, if it is not d20 accessible. - Your Friendly Neighborhood Summoner

Aqguazula- Eskiline is right, but I insist you keep all of the completely necessary European vowels, as I am sick of you filthy yanks butchering the English language. Favour + Colour for the win. Huzzah.

Eskiline- Looking good. And thanks for helping out. Even if you did spell Colour wrong. :P

Ondir- Thanks for finishing the profile. Looks great.

Dacota- Nice idea, but bribing the GM with a familiar tune will not get you in any faster than anyone else. ;) (I'm Irish!) Your build looks good.

I will take my odd hybrid of Canadian and European english, thank you very much. Although I honour your statement, the American english is lacking in that little bit of charm.

Didn't think it was a bribe. Heck, I have no idea who you are XD.

Canadian / European English accepted. I live in Canada so I can deal with that.

I know I know. Just a joke Dacota, just a joke.

    Lol

    I've finished G'nosha's crunch!

    I hope that I haven't forgotten anything

G'nosha looks good. Everything seems to have in order. The Flail is such an underappreciated weapon.

Ok, this is the character I (purplefruitnewt) would like to run. I need to go back through and make sure crunch and fluff match with the campaign, but it should be most of the way there already.

Zarvas is missing two traits, one a campaign trait, and a drawback. Also you can keep your set up, but break it up, within the Spoiler, to look a little more like mine, if you can. Thanks.

I believe it is spelled Hzzah.

Canada huh? So bonus points if it's in French as well?

You know we here in Michigan believe Canada is just a remote bit of the upper peninsula. Damn U.S. high school geography.

I do live in Quebec so yeah, I can speak French (not a native Quebecer, was born in Austria)"Don't you mean chaurm?" Is that what they teach you in school eh?

I live in Canada but I am Irish. So bonus point if you can get in "F!+# the Brits" somehow. (That is just a joke. I'm part English.)
