Jinhong Yeou, the Crimson Fox wrote:

I had no idea it would be so hard to find a weapon in the wagon after poking around it earlier doing some random shopping. I thought hafted weapons and longbows would be big enough to see quickly, and I thought it would be possible to look for either type simultaneously. Ah, well, the best laid plans...

Ok, in an attempt to help clear up any confusion about what is and what is not in the wagon, I will attempt to explain why I have handled things the way I have.

To begin with, the following items are the only listed supplies that where called out in part one. 2 tons of food and clean water, five crates of arrows and crossbow bolts, and clean dressings for wounds. Outside that, there is nothing on the caravan specifically for anyone in the group to buy or barrow.

In addition to that, Bloodcove is the only location within miles of the excavation site that has anything that even resembles provisions of any kind.

Upon completing part one, I was presented with the dilemma of players wanting to buy items to take into part two. With consideration of the above facts, I would have normally said no. After reading the scaling difficulty of part two, I decided to try and make some things available. Seeing that there isn’t anywhere to buy things like armor, weapons, magical healing potions, and alchemical supplies, I chose to allow the group to buy items from the pathfinder supplies to help with the scaling difficulty of part two. This was a GM discretion that I felt was necessary for any resemblance of success heading into part two. Looking at the watered down version of the encounter you are now experiencing should, in itself, explain why I made such discretionary call. This does not mean that the wagon is now equipped with any and all items you might need at any given point. I have allowed some mundane items available, such as a spear or maybe a bow, assuming you take the time to retrieve the item. This means deciding which of the many crates they are in, assuming you can remember this information in the heat of battle, and unstacking the crates, busting them open, and retrieving the item. To articulate this process in a more simplistic manner, I decided to allow a 50% chance, per. round looking, that you successfully retrieve the item. This again is something that I am allowing to help with the difficulty of the encounter, and not something that is called out within the scenario.

I know the encounter is challenging, and probably has everyone concerned. I am aware of the challenges it presents and the danger to the group. I believe the group is doing well and has within its capability to be successful if everyone participates and does their best. (Note) With Girzog’s arrow striking the pink archer, there is now two dead archers. If you truly need a bow, their equipment is now laying unattended on the ground next to them.

Quick question. Are you saying we're in the wateered down encounter now, or there is another version that is watered down?

If this is that one, then DAAAAAAAYYYYYUUUUUUMMM

Maps

Yes...this is the watered down version. There should have been (11) mounted archers and the lance guy. That's why my hesitation on continuing. I foreseen the challenge and felt it held a high chance of failure. Random dice rolls and tactical placement can change things a bit, but (12) mounted combatants vs a sub-tier 1-2 group sounded rough to me.

Thanks for the explanation, GM. That makes a lot more sense that my assumption about the inventory based on our ability to purchase supplies (thanks for that, by the way).

So Jinny was daydreaming as she perused the supplies and only *thought* she saw the stuff she needed. She's kind of flighty that way. And Butharn looked so *cute* shooting his crossbow.

Agreed it's a tough encounter but we seem to be holding our own for now. If I can avoid going negative HP early in the fight (and thus remaining a net positive factor, however small) I think we'll be okay.

Not wanting to nitpick, but the archers are rolling d8's against us, so I assume they're using longbows. But I happened across this in the longbow description:

Longbow wrote:
A longbow is too unwieldy to use while you are mounted.

Are they, in fact, longbows? The extra 2 potential damage might make the difference in a choice to go grab one or not.

Edit:
Never mind. Found this:

I may dip one level into Rules Lawyer next levelup. There's some pretty sweet bonuses to GM Manipulation and Party Loot Distribution.

Wait, did I say that out loud?

I have lots of levels in Rules Lawyer. Most of my skill ranks have been going to Knowledge (D&D) and Knowledge (Card and Board), so occasionally I miss my Knowledge (Pathfinder) DC.

I have so many levels in Rules Lawyer that my friends get onto me for overusing its class features, like Audit Another and Steal Fun.

I avoid Audit Another, but I do have the unfortunate habit of overusing Steal Fun. Always getting better about that though.

Of course there is always the positive effect that new members to the group are instantly pointed my way and told to ask me if they're confused about anything, even by members who have played some of these games as long (or longer) as I've been alive.

Same here! I sort of take pride in that. Our (current) GM knows the Bestiary a lot better than I do, but even the ones who've been playing longer defer to me in terms of game rules.

Maps

LoL... yes they are composite longbows with a +0 strength modifier. Just a FYI, I personally don't mind a little rules lawyering, or being corrected if I have made an incorrect call. Any concern, can be voiced and I am OK with taking a look at it. There are so many rules, faqs, and added content, not to mention the society's adjustments, that it is sometimes hard to stay on top of everything.

(Note) I am going to be away till Sunday afternoon. I apologize for the delay, but something came up that requires my attention.

We are getting close to concluding part two. If you have a day-job roll and would like to have it included on your chronicle, please roll it now and I will try and have chronicles available as quick as I can.

On that note, because of a work reassignment, this will be my last scenario for a while. At least until I can get situated. This group has been a very fun group to GM too, and I look forward to seeing everyone online in future games.

They have one last wave that is meant more for comedy than effect. Eventually the monkey-men attempt to climb down the cliff face, which ends poorly for them. I personally don't see why any of them would make it down, seeing the camp has more than enough time to range attack them for many rounds before they could successfully make that climb.

I should have chronicles up shortly. Thanks for playing through the two scenarios. It has been a lot of fun.

That's interesting. I completely missed that. It is a typo.
