Coooool!!!

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

Huzzah! Everyone's on 6010 xp, and gain a level!

Unsurprisingly, I took another level of Cleric. I rolled a 7 for hit points; the other improvements are purely mechanical. I need a night's rest before the new spell slots come into effect - however, as I can spontaneously use the empty slots for healing, I cast Cure light wounds on Vethran (gets back 11 hp) and Cure moderate wounds on Hudak (he recovers 15 hp)

hp 87 of 87; effects active: mage armour (AC 22); gravity bow, flame arrow Female Elf Wizard (Transmuter) 6 / Ranger 1 / Eldritch Knight 4

Elisile hovers anxiously as the healers attend to Dravite, Larken and Vethran, her normal composure quite shaken by the battle with the fiend … but as it becomes evident that they will live, her normal calm returns.

“We have done very well here today, my companions,” she says as they leave Thistletop. “The town of Sandpoint is saved, and we have prevented a great evil from being loosed on the world.”

Think I’m going to level as wizard – some second level spells would be nice!

I'm kind of regreting make Davos as a "vanilla cleric" and I'm thinking about multi-classing into either a warlock (CA) or binder (TOM) but need some feedback from Aubrey. I'm really leaning toward binder/tenebrous(sp?) apostate, but would need to rework some of the fluff to fit Davos' storyline and the setting. (And I need Aubrey's permission)

Here is my take on the backstory:

Spoiler:

Davos returns to Magnimar with Aylmora, seeking a way to restore her. They go from temple to temple, but each time they are turned away, either because they can't pay, or the temple doesn't have the magic available, or for whatever reason. After having the gods turn their backs on him, Davos finds a being who can heal Aylmora, but requires that Davos bind his soul with it as payment. Davos happily agrees.

He and Aylmora live happily for a while, until she brings up her desire to return to her priestly duties. Davos flies into a fit of rage at what he sees as a betrayal, and strikes Aylmora. He leaves their home and heads back to the only place he has ever felt at home: the road.

Davos' alignment would shift to Neutral, but the being that is bound to his soul constantly pushes him toward evil; something he fights against.

It's also quite possible that Aylmora has Davos' bun in her oven.

This assumes a certain amount of downtime before we start with the next adventure. If any of this doesn't work, let me know and I'll rework it. I'll start working on rules stuff as soon as I get the ok from Aubrey.

Oh, and I've got 2 CLWs for anybody that needs 'em.

Davos:

Spoiler:
I'm not very familiar with binders, though I own the ToM. If you want to do that, go ahead, but it is unlikely you will have too much downtime at this juncture - maybe a week or two, but not enough (probably) to be playing happy families for a while. However, I quite like the idea of you winding up a bit "tainted" though - I can do stuff with that. I'll work it into your trip to Magnimar, which is coming up next.

"Hey, guys. That was cool how we killed the Sandpoint Devil back there, huh? Guys? Whaddya think?"

Hudak thinks that maybe killing the Sandpoint Devil will get him some points with the ladies.

hp 87 of 87; effects active: mage armour (AC 22); gravity bow, flame arrow Female Elf Wizard (Transmuter) 6 / Ranger 1 / Eldritch Knight 4

"That creature was known as the Sandpoint Devil? How did people know of it? And ... I am not sure that it was a devil at all, perhaps some sort of demon..."

Elisile hasn't heard of the Sandpoint Devil I don't think.

Male Dwarf Ranger/7 XP- 35674

Dat were no Sandpoint Devil! Da devil roams da hills an forest's aboot Sandpoint, not fer sittin' in a room waiting fer ta be unleashed for a millenia. Dis be a fiend o' de hells, which will be still gittin' ye points wit' de ladies.

The party return to Sandpoint, battered but triumphant. The citizens are delighted that all immediate danger has been eliminated and the council relieved that the town will survive, with the goblins crushed and Nualia’s homicidal schemes brought to naught. The group are treated like royalty for the next few days, until a ceremony outside the temple at which, to great acclaim, they are vested as honorary Watch members for life (together with nice gold badges denoting their status). They also receive the blessing from High Priest Xantus for slaying the fiend at Thistletop. He describes the thing as a “yochlol”, a demon versed in subversion and capable of taking a pleasing shape to lure its unwitting victims to their doom. Its death was almost as great a coup as foiling Nualia.

OK, you have a fortnight or so to do pretty much what you want – create items, gather information, try seducing Ameiko (or anyone else), try the hagfish challenge (again), brag about your victory, mingle with the aristocracy, or whatever. Buying items is trickier – you have pretty much exhausted their immediate resources in items divine and arcane.

Hudak, try a Bluff check, DC 15. If you succeed:

Spoiler:
”You killed the Sandpoint Devil? Wow! That thing has been bothering us round here for generations. We can all sleep easier now!

If you fail:

Spoiler:
”Pffft! That thing wasn’t the Sandpoint Devil. Did it have wings, a horse’s head, fangs? Don’t know what you killed, but it wasn’t the Devil. Hey, this guy thinks he killed the Sandpoint Devil! What a knob! Haah haah haah!”

Someone try a Gather Information, DC 15:

Spoiler:
”Yeah, old Scarnetti was moaning about how much this bunch has cost the town, and that the Watch could have done the job at a fraction of the cost if Deverin had waited for the reinforcements to arrive. Ooops, look, there’s one of the “heroes” there…”

Someone try another Gather Information check, DC 15:

Spoiler:
”So what is Foxglove doing at that old mansion? The place was abandoned for years.”
“Well, he has a bunch of workmen out of Magnimar there, doing the place up, and he’s moved himself and that wife of his there.”
“Odd, really – I though he had money problems.”
“Me too. Still, he’s welcome to the place – been past it a few times, very spooky. And that history, too. Maybe he can’t sell it, so maybe he decided to live in it instead.”
“Hmmm, quite. Personally, I’d have stayed in Magnimar and left that place to fall down…”

And yet another Gather Information check, DC 15:

Spoiler:
”Poor Ameiko’s very upset these days, what with her brother hauled off for killing her father and being mixed up with the goblins. She’s now all alone in the world.”
“Poor child. I hear the whole lot of them are due to be sent back to Magnimar for trial. It’s the cross for them, for sure. And all of them so young.”
“Yes, and who would have thought Nualia would be leading them?”
“I know. I hear Ameiko’s going to make the trip to Magnimar with Tsuto – maybe she will try and intercede on his behalf.”
“Well, good luck with that…..”

About this time, Sherriff Hemlock returns with help from Magnimar. While the threat is largely gone, the soldiers spend some time patrolling the roads north of Sandpoint and reducing the residual goblin threat. After a few days, the party are then summoned to a meeting with the town council. Mayor Deverin kicks off with little preamble.

“My friends, you have repeatedly provided great service to the citizens of our little town. We are proud to have you among us. However, the council has one more service to ask of you.”

“Indeed,” interjects Sherriff Hemlock. “With the goblins quelled, our forces can probably handle security around here for a while. But we need someone to escort the prisoners to Magnimar for trial. We were hoping that you would be able to do this for us, and bear the sworn statements of the council and other citizens. Plus, in any case, it is likely you will be needed to give evidence, since you are the primary witnesses, and it will also allow you to spend some of the treasure you recovered from the goblins and Nualia’s cohorts.”

“And the town,” harrumphs Scarnetti.

“Yes, indeed,” replies Mayor Deverin, glaring daggers at Scarnetti, “The resources of the town are somewhat expended after the recent crisis. Will you be willing to do this for us?”

Haha! I actually made a Gather Info check! I'll take the last one, I think.

"Shouldn't be a problem, Sheriff."

Dat sounds good ta me! I can be gittin' me hook enchanted dere an' maybe pick up some armor.

What do we have for loot from the whole Thistletop scenario? We need to make a list and ID any magical stuff. Then we can figure out how much loot we have for Magnimar.

Larken seems preoccupied for the entire fortnight. He spends a lot of time reading, and pays little attention to either the accolades of the locals, or the foibles of his companions. When he's not reading, he spends time talking to Father Zanthus, and any other priests in town. By the end of the second week, he's sworn himself to the Church of Saranrae.

Did someone make a list, or is it back in the thread somewhere?

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

I think this is most of it:

Fighter: magic banded mail) and a potion (radiates minor Conjuration), everburning torch, mwk bastard sword
Bugbear: Monstrous comp longbow, potion, 4 magical arrows
Female wizard: 5 scrolls, a wand, a magic cloak, everburning torch
Nualia: Magic bastard sword, magic breastplate, magic medallion, valuable holy symbol

Goblin stuff:
- Ripnugget: chainmail*
- Manic: battleaxe*, chain shirt*, light shield*
- Weasly: dogslicer, shortbow*
- Squat: half plate*, greataxe*
- Gruesome: dogslicer, heavy crossbow
- Alwyn's old MW greatsword

Alwyn uses Ripnugget’s greatsword and GRuesome's healing wand, which needs ID, as does the cloak Dravite wears and the old crone's lightning wand. Anything else?

The scrolls you can idenfify with Spellcraft checks - you can take 20 on those and save on the Identify spells. If anyone has Craft (Alchemy), you can do the same withthe potions. Arguably, the other stuff needs to be identified in order to get the right price.

Swag list:

Spoiler:
Fighter: banded mail +1, MW bastard sword, MW Heavy Steel Shield, and a potion of CMW, everburning torch
Bugbear: MW mighty (+4 STR) comp longbow, potion of CMW, 4 elf-bane arrows, 4pp
Female wizard: scroll of Sleep, scroll of Comprehend Languages, sroll of Minor Image, scroll of See Invisibility, scroll of Whispering Wind, a wand on Magic Missile (CL 1, 38 charges), Cloak of Resistance +1, everburning torch, 3pp
Nualia: bastard sword +1, breastplate +1, Sihedron medallion (see below), MW composite longbow, holy symbol of Lamashtu worth 100gp, 7pp

Goblin stuff:

- Alwyn's old MW greatsword[/ooc]

Sihedron medalion
Aura faint necromancy; CL 5th

DESCRIPTION
This medallion hangs on a leather cord, a silver disc inscribed with a seven-pointed star. While worn, a Sihedron medallion grants its wearer a +1 resistance bonus on all saving throws. Once per day, it may be commanded to bestow the effects of false life on the wearer—activating this function is a free action. Placed on the neck of a dead body, the Sihedron medallion preserves the body indefinitely via a gentle repose effect.

Hey Mr.DM. I am getting ready to go Ranger 4, but I don't want an Animal Companion. I see a variant in PHB2 that is Distracting Attack (next person to attack a person I hit gets to treat the people hit as flanked, including being able to sneak attack them) to replace the animal companion, but it really isn't my idea of what Dravite is about. Any thoughts on what I could trade in that ability for?
I wouldn't mind one of these or any other suggestions like maybe a speed increase or something:
(from unearthed arcana, generic classes)Sneak Attack (Ex): As the rogue ability, but +2d6 on damage rolls. Prerequisites: Hide 4 ranks, Move Silently 4 ranks.
(from unearthed arcana, generic classes)Uncanny Dodge (Ex): Combines the barbarian class features uncanny dodge and improved uncanny dodge. All class levels stack to determine the minimum character level required to sneak attack the character.
Mostly I just want to avoid the "ok I rapid shot these 3 guys so if you guys attack any of them treat them as flanked but only the first one of you" or the "my bear moves up to attack, claw, claw, bite, grapple, break Invisible castle, carpel tunnel from linking roll urls, etc.". I just want something simple to use.
Also I am assuming that I can't get my hook +1ed in Sandpoint and will need to wait until Magnimar, is that accurate?

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard (Evoker) 9

Leveled. Got my first level of Master Specialist and added new skill points, feats, spells, etc. Also bumped INT to 18. Hooray!

During the fortnight, Vethran will copy the already-researched scroll of see invisibility into his spellbook. I assume I can get the 200gp of inks and whatnot here in Sandpoint? I could before. Also, if Elisile would like to spend some time studying with Vethran, we could copy spells out of each others' books.

Dib's on Nualia's bastard sword. I'll trade in the magic battleaxe and divvy it's value betwixt the party as soon as I know what her bastard sword is. Paying for the identify out of my personal funds.

Wand of magic missile (Vethran)
Assorted scrolls (Vethran and Elisile)

Greatsword +1 (Alwyn)
Wand of CMW (Alwyn)
Bracers of armour +2 (Vethran or Elisile?)
Wand of Lightning bolt (Vethran)

17 castings of Identify!

Thus:

15753

=14053/2
=7027/8
=878 gold, 1 silver and 2 copper

This sum assumes that we sell the magical breastplate (Davos has better armour and Dravite uses light armour) and does not include the Sihedron Medallion. Alwyn will argue strongly for selling it.

Elisile argues strongly against selling the medallion.

“We know that this rune has some significance in regards to some of the ruins scattered around this area; The Old Light and Thistletop for two. I was incorrect about this particular medallion being a key, but another object in the shape of the medallion was, and I still believe that this particular thing may hold some future use.

“I do not believe that the menace of these ruins is completely spent, despite our victories. This medallion may yet be useful; further, it could be dangerous should it fall into the wrong hands; and further again, it seems a useful item in its own right.

“For those reasons, I think we should keep it.”

Elisile or Vehtran could also identify the scrolls by casting Read Magic.

Potions can be identified with a DC25 Spellcraft check, but as this check does not allow retries, we could probably not take 20 on it.

Spellcraft check to identify potions: 17+12 = 29; 11+12 = 23. Well, that saves us 100gp on Identify. Maybe Vethran or someone can get the other one.

Scroll of comprehend languages: ?
Scroll of minor image: Elisile or Illes
Scroll of See Invisibility: (is this the one that Vethran scribed from? Does this use up the scroll?)

1st — comprehend languages, detect secret doors, floating disc, identify, obscuring mist, sleep, burning hands, mage armor, ray
of enfeeblement
2nd — locate object, minor image, see invisibility, spider climb, mirror image, shatter

Elisile is happy to share spellbooks with Veth, although a lot of her spells he can’t use (and vice-versa). Excluding 0 level spells, spells that she has that might be useful to Vethran include:

I've always felt that need comes before monetary value when we divide up the swag. Sure, this time Hudak and Alwyn come out on top, but next time someone else gets useful loot instead. These things even out over time. This might just be me, though. ;D

"Huh. Well, if you want to keep the accursed trinket, I won't get in your way. I'm sure you are right about its significance; however, that is precisely what bothers me. It was present in the demon-infested catacombs under this town, it was prominently displayed in the other demon's prison, and we found it hung around mad Nualia's neck. I, for one, do not think that these are coincidences. Useful as it might be, the amulet represents evil, inscrutable power." He shakes his head before smiling at Elisile. "However, I'll vouch for your inner strength. While you might look like a little waif, I know for a fact that your heart and mind are both mighty. This has not been a good adventure for loot for the rogue. I'm going to have to convert my share into purchased gear in Magnimar (Maganmar, Mangamar, Mooglemere... whatever it's called.) It doesn't seem quite fair to get free stuff out of the loot, and then get an equal share of everything else. There's quite a bit of cash value in the "keep" pile. It kind've screws the rest of us.

Dude... your piece of the gold doesn't cover half your sword.

800-900 gold doesn't allow one to buy on the magic item aisle.

The actual 8-way split is 3206 each. If we're going need vs. greed, then we shouldn't hold back for the party fund. All of us suffered from not having magic weapons - thus we all need them.

I'm fine either way, but it does keep things more fair and even to "cash in" your claimed loot. Adds a little bit of time and book keeping, but that's not hard to manage.

Things may even out in the end, but I've noticed the rogue (and some other character classes) tend to get shafted a bit in terms of useful treasure.

I think Uncanny Dodge would be a good one for Dravite, since he is a pretty alert and mildly paranoid sort of guy. If we treat the levels of ranger as the same for the levels of barbarian that would otherwise be required, I think that is fine. OK with that?

Does that include the CMW wand, or is that 'party loot' kept separate from personal treasure?

So the way this would work is that I'll buy out the magic greatsword for 2350 gp, leaving me with 856 gp (which will, of course, be halved as it is derived from sold items)? I'm not criticising the system - I've just never dealt with loot this way before.

Carrying on on this theme, I guess it boils down to two possible outlooks: expediency v fairness. On the one hand, it might be expedient to hand out the goodies to those that can use them best as this might increase the overall effectiveness of the party. On the other hand, some characters might get the lion's share while others get less (as in this instance). That said, as DM I control the flow of magic items and what sort you get, and can therefore more or less ensure that suitable items are lying around for all party members (though it is probably fair to say, as hinted above, there isn't that much that is specifically good for rogues). Stunty's alternative approach sorts out the problem within the party, rather than relying on the DM, but there are still accounting issues as to whether you value items that are kept at full purchase price or half resale price.

Like I say, sort it out between you, but it isn't necessarily cut and dried either way. In addition, this is the first big pay day of the campaign, and will not be the last, so there is plenty of scope to improve the overall balance.

For Aubery:

Spoiler:

Here are the revised story bits for Davos.

Davos is going to spend most of time shut up with Aylmora in their room, praying and tending her wounds. He emerges every once in a while to get food.

Aylmora is dying. She will not eat and is starving to death. Davos is afriad she will not survive the trip to Magnimar. One night a being speaks to Davos in his dreams, offering to heal Aylmora in return for binding with Davos's soul. Davos agrees and Aylmora is healed, however Davos shows some physical sign of his possession.

I'll decide what vestige I'm binding with later today. I'll post something for everyone to see once I get the thumbs-up from you.

I don't care about method of loot division as long as I'm not in charge of sorting it out. Just tell me what to write down and I'm happy. :)

Stuff to sell:

Before I pick stuff, do we have to value the magic items into the take like we did before?

Speaking as someone for whom none of the loot is terribly useful, I gotta say "Well, yeah..."

That's fine. You split it up. Everybody will be happy.

I just want Nualia's bastard sword. I don't want anything else.
Give me the bastard sword, and cut me out of the rest.

I’ve never played dividing loot on this basis either, but here is my take on it:

Spoiler:

You exclude only a few items which are obviously either utilitarian and may be expected to be swapped amongst the group (such as the everburning torches) and items that clearly and directly benefit the entire group (such as the wand of CMW). I would argue that healing potions do not quite fall into this category, as 90% of the time they are used by the person carrying them (and mostly people like to stock up on a healing potion or two, so if they are included as party loot, whoever is carrying them essentially got a free gift).

You then add up the total value of all remaining loot – however, all items etc are priced at half value (not full), as that’s all anyone will ever get for them, whether you sell them now and share the wealth, or keep them and (possibly) sell them later when you get better stuff.

You take out the cost of any identifying or appraising – even if someone does not intend to take any of the magical items, you never know for sure until you know what they are, you can’t really sell them unless you know what they are, and it is really a benefit for the group to know what they are. (In our case, by my count, we have 18 items to Identify – not including scrolls, which can be done by read magic, or potions; I’m sure between them Illes or Vethran can come up with a DC25 to identify the other one).

You now know the total value of all loot; you divide that total by the number of party members (in our case 9, not 8), which gives you the value of each share. People can then either take their share in coin or items or a combination of both, ‘paying’ half price for the items. It is assumed that any unwanted items are sold for coin. If you want items worth more than your total share, you have to pay for them out of your personal funds.

For example, say everyone’s share of the treasure comes to 2000gp apiece; I could take my share of the loot in the form of the Bracers of AC+2 (4000gp, saleable price 2000) OR a Cloak of Resistance (1000gp saleable price 500) and a +1 suit of banded mail (1400gp, saleable price 700) and 800gp in coin OR just take 2000gp in coin. If I wanted the bracers and the cloak (and assuming of course that no one else had already taken them) I would need to fork out 500gp of my own money so that everyone else still gets an even share.

It seems a pretty fair way to do it. In a RL game we’d probably go round the table and everyone take turns picking items (high roll gets first choice); that would take too long here IMO, so we’ll just need to try to compromise if two people want the same thing.

So, by my reckoning, we have:

Spoiler:
Party Loot: Wand of CMW and 3 everburning torches (who wants to hang onto them?)

Loot list:
MW Heavy Steel Shield 170gp, 85gp resale
Cloak of resistance +1 1000gp, 500gp resale

Hudak’s +1 battleaxe (this goes into the loot cos its from the goblin fight) 2310gp, 1155gp resale
14 pp (140gp)

That comes to 16,844gp total (resale)

18 castings of Identify = 1800gp

16844 – 1800 = 15044
15044 / 9 = 1671.55

Each share is 1671gp, 5sp, 5cp.

From that, everyone chooses which items from the list they want (based on the resale value), the rest you get in coin.

Of course, the problem with this method is that valuable / useful / unique items potentially get sold off because no one can afford them (or at least the person who wants them can’t).

For example;

Spoiler:
say for argument’s sake that Vethran wants the Wand of Magic Missile (which only he can use), the Wand of lightning bolt (that only he can use) and the Bracers of armour (which, for the sake of this argument assume no one else wants): that’s 2420go right there, or approx 748gp more than Veth’s share. If he can afford to pay the extra out of his personal stash, great. If he can’t (likely, given the expense of scribing spells and upkeep of spellbooks etc), then one of these items is probably sold off, and we can’t afford to buy another one until the next big haul (maybe).

In fact, no one can afford the Bracers of Armour outright. Veth may or may not be able to pay for it; Elisile probably won’t take it as there’s other stuff she wants which is probably just going to push it out of her buy-back range. Probably no one else wants it, so this item is gone despite it potentially being pretty useful for two members of the party.

Alright, that’s an example which may not come to pass, but it’s a risk with some of the pricier individual items (such as the Bracers and the Sihedron medallion); we may end up selling something for half price in the interest of equality that we can’t easily replace for a while.

F$!$ me that took a long time to write and work out… Hopefully it was worthwhile. On reflection I think I prefer the other method. Its worked ok in my campaigns for twenty years or so, things tend to even out in the wash. EDIT: But then again, I'm not the one being shafted this time around with the lack of loot. Being a fighter mage, there's probably always going to be something I'll find handy, so ... take that with a grain of salt.

If we go with the buy-back option, it looks like Elisile will take the Sihedron Medallion and nothing else, unless Dravite has his heart set on it …

In which case … maybe she’ll take the Cloak of Resistance (again, unless someone else wants it). Maybe the scroll of See Invisible (unless Veth already scribed from that one). Maybe a potion of CMW.

She can’t really afford the Bracers of AC.

I'll take a look at it when I get home or maybe over the weekend. Is that okay? I know Hudak can't do simple cyphers, but I had a finance degree once upon a time.

It's really hard to do with nobody in the room. It's like dividing up a meal check in slow motion.
I'll take a look at it though, just not right now.
