That's cool. I was having computer troubles. No need to ridicule your wife. She just needs to be 'punished'.

I take it we are posting in initiative order?

Varies (tends towards Male) Changeling Warlock 3

Raine shuffles along the railing, looking for an open shot.

5' step to D19, ready an eldritch blast for the first drow in range (60').

Male Human Ardent 5 / Flayerspawn 1

It looks like Shagraat acts before Benedetto, but I'm likely to be off-line all evening, so I'll post Ben's actions under a spoiler.

Spoiler:
Benedetto moves back into the room to the south, expecting to see the elven woman. He full-moves to get as close to her as possible, and urges her "Follow me up the stairs. We can protect you, and then maybe we can figure out what's going on here."

(If he's adjacent to her, and she gets hit for damage, he can expend his psionic focus and take the damage himself, instead.)

M Hobgoblin Monk 3

Shagraat high-tails it after the fleeing woman. Dodging through his companions, he cuts left along the gallery of the next room, scanning it for the running woman. If I see her, I call out to her in Common, "Run up the stairs! Fight with us and you might stand a chance!" I take it that it is completely dark in here since our light source is in the other room? I'm taking a double move (120') so I think I should be able to make it to M11 of the next room (or M31 if the numbers keep getting higher), one square down the stairs.

120' movement is a quadruple move and a Run action, which must be in a straight line per the rules. A double move is 60'.

M Hobgoblin Monk 3

Crap! Forgot that. That puts me at L23, I think. Same action, though.

Per his spoiler. Benedetto moves back into the room to the south, expecting to see the (elven) woman. He full-moves to get as close to her as possible, and urges her "Follow me up the stairs. We can protect you, and then maybe we can figure out what's going on here."

She isn't an elf, by the way, she is a human. Benedetto never specified a location to start from, so I'll put him at I20 to start Then he moves 60' to L27. For info, the stairs in the second hall in which Benedetto and Shagraat are standing are at A/29-32 and M/29-32, running up in a north to south direction like the others. Alidaber is at G33.

Colvare.

Male Human Sorcerer 3

As per my other posts, I'll just pull them together

"Alidaber!" Colvare shouts as he sees his old friend.

Making a throwing jesture, and shouting a deep gutteral word in giant, Colvare throws a glowing orange ball at the lead elf.

Magic missile as per spoiler beofre, 2 points damange to leader

"Guys, whatever just shouted in Giant, I don't thik it was these elves!" Colvare says as he moves back into the last room.

Standard move to put me in I22

No, I'm not mad, my son still takes a bottle int he middle of the night....

When you wake up again, you can roll to overcome spell resistance - hey, it's a drow. However, we can carry on with others' actions in the meantime.

Hamathin.

Spell Resistance: (1d20+1=19)

Take that Drow!

Colvare's spell hurtles a gout of flame at the leading elf, scorching his skin. But he presses in in pursuit of the fleeing woman.

Varies (tends towards Male) Changeling Warlock 3

To keep the narrative flowing if my action comes up:

Spoiler:
Spell Resistance: 14 + 1 = 15. Ranged touch attack: 16 + 2 = 18 (+1 if within 30'). Damage: 2 (3 if within 30').

M Elf (Aeranal) Cleric 2

Hamathin hesitates, wanting to keep an eye on the drow and at the same time thinking this woman, Alidaber, might be injured.

Spoiler:
Delay. If Alidaber comes up to the gallery, double-move toward the stairs she chooses. I'll jump back in after her turn, in any case. All I've got is a dagger and no combat spells, so don't wait on me!

The drow leader dashes after Alidaber, even as Rayne levels a blast of arcane energy at him, splashing the elf with caustic light. The other drow split into two groups, heading up the stairs on each side.

Rayne’s initiative is now just before the drow. Drow leader moves to G29, Drow 1 moves to M13 at the balcony level, Drow 2 at A13 at the balcony level, Drow 3 at M11 on the stairs, Drow 4 at A11 on the stairs.

Initiative reprised and revised:
Alidaber 22
Shagraat 16+
Benedetto 16-
Colvare 15+
Hamathin 15-
Raine 13+
Drow 13
Urthona 9
Andrei 4
Mirra 3

Now Urthona.

Male Shifter (Longstride) Barbarian 2/Fighter 1

Urthona runs yelling towards the first enemy and strikes at him with all his might.

Spoiler:
(Rage + Shift on) - Charge to M14 (AC 17) - attack and damage (1d20+8=15, 1d8+5=9)

Here's a new post, not as much character writing involved.

Moving forward cautiously, Andrei mirrors the fleet-footed shifter, approaching the stairs. As he moves, Andrei raises his shield, ready to protect himself form any assault.

Moving to A15. Activating Total Defense.

Urthona wrote:

** spoiler omitted **

You can't charge as it is not a straight line to there. Good news - your AC is therefore 19. Bad news - it makes no difference, you miss, and he is using a reach weapon and hits you anyway with his AoO.

The drow's chain hisses out and its blades slice across Urthona's arm and leg, carving deep gouges. 8 points of damage.

Guys, I don't normally give hints in combat, as I see it being up to the PCs as to their tactics. However, in the interests of prolonging this campaign beyond the starting encounter, I observe that you are all very split up right now. These drow are elite assassins and warriors, you are lvl 1 characters and taking the threat from them somewhat casually - almost half of you are not even in the room where the main body of the drow force is. If you don't get it together fast you will be picked off one by one - and quickly. This has TPK written all over it. I recommend you back up Andrei and Urthona (who is already wounded) pronto.

Now Mirra.

I was actually going to throw down my protection ability, but the group kind of scattered before my turn in the order.

If everyone gets within 30ft of me, I can grant +2 to AC for about a minute.

By the way, unless you are out of sequence, you don't have to put your actions in spoilers.

M Elf (Aeranal) Cleric 2

Seeing Urthona wounded, Hamathin rushes over to help.

Come off Delay after Urthona's move, double-move to M15.

Male Shifter (Longstride) Barbarian 2/Fighter 1

"Careful o'the chains, reach."

Female Half-elf Beguiler 3nd

Mirra watches everyone rush off in different directions. "Wait.... damn, fall back to the doorway." She grabs some sand from a pocket in her coat, speaks some soothing arcane words and throws the sand towards the right stair case.

Casting sleep in M12 which should hit both drow and miss Urthona.
DC 14
Spell Resist 17+1 = 18

Um, dude, drow are elves. Elves are immune to sleep. Your character, being half-elven, is probably aware of this.

Sleepy time in the UK! spoiler below for my action.

Spoiler:

Ok, short but sweet, Aubrey, please work your narrative magic!

If Alidaber goes for the stairs, and hence is going to need help, Colvare will in deed keep her covered with another magic missile

If Alidaber keeps running, I will make a move action to F20 and cast the magic missile at the Drow Andrei went after.

Spell Resistance: Damage: (1d20 1=3, 1d4 1=5)

Grrr, why do I get 4 for the damage when the SR will fail?

Aubrey lets you.

That's one from the PHB2 or something. I don't have my books - how does it work?

Non-lethal damage and Will save negates.

The drow Mirra ensorcelled staggers slightly and shakes its head, but regains its focus with chilling speed.

Alidaber turns, glances up at the balcony, and charges at her drow pursuer. Surprised by her sudden volte face it stands supine as she cuts him down with a brutal blow from her longsword.

Charge to H30, nice crit from the NPC (shrug). In case you are wondering, no AoO as he was running, which means you don't threaten (by my interpretation).

Initiative reprised and revised:
Alidaber 22
Shagraat 16+
Benedetto 16-
Colvare 15+
Raine 13+
Drow 13
Urthona 9
Andrei 4
Hamathin 3+
Mirra 3

Now Shagraat.

M Hobgoblin Monk 3

"Whoa there! She must be part hobgoblin!"

Shagraat similarly reverses his run when he sees the woman's surprise victory. I take another double move. Through the doorway vacated by Hamathin and down the left wall. I believe I can get to B20.

(Benedetto up next.)

The hall the drow and Alidaber came from suddenly resounds to a loud crashing and tinkling, as if the glass cabinets are being demolished.

Male Human Ardent 5 / Flayerspawn 1

Benedetto continues to the stairs in the southern room, following the woman north. He loads his sling as he moves, and he'll attack the first drow he sees.

He'll take a double move, if there's no foe within sight after his first move, but he won't be running. If things work right, he and the mysterious woman-with-a-sword will move up behind the drow who've ascended the stairs after the party, flanking them and cutting off their retreat.

Male Human Sorcerer 3

After seeing how much Alidaber needs his help, prepairing another magic missile, Colvare turns back to the first room.

As he moves through the doorway he hears the crashing of glass and shouts: "The leader's down, I sure as s%&$[1] don't like the sound of that!, GORBESH!"

Giant:

Spoiler:
That last translates to "DIE!"

The ball of flame that leaves Colvare's finger tips glows a deep, bright white making a direct course for the elf that Andrei is charging towards, obviously more powerful the the last, it disapears harmlessly mear inches from the cursed drow.

Spell Resistance: Damage: (1d20+1=3, 1d4+1=5) from the roll before. Move to F20, again as before...

[1] - Colvare never was very good at aliteration, but he does try, bless him.

OK, I put you at L27, but on the ground floor. Given the lack of spcific coordinates, do I detect someone who hasn't drawn a map? ;-)

OK, waiting for Raine.

Varies (tends towards Male) Changeling Warlock 3

Snapping his fingers in the air, Rayne once again summons a blast of roiling purple flame, sending it streaking at the drow who only recently crested the stairs.

Eldritch blast at the drow in A13. It looks like Andrei is 10' away and isn't in the way, so I'm not shooting into melee nor does the drow have cover. Spell resist: 7 + 1 = 8. I'm not going to bother rolling the rest because it doesn't matter. :)

The half-elf curses under his breath as the flames disperse before meeting the target.

Andrei's actions (on his turn):

Spoiler:
Andrei will backpedal to where most of the group are (as far as he can get with a move action), and then use his Protection Devotion power (+2 to AC to himself and all allies within 30ft). Assuming the Drow in front of him doesn't lay the smackdown first!

Thr drow slither up, positioning themselves to maximum effect. Their chains hiss and flick. Andrei only just manages to deflect a blow due to his defensive stance. Urthona isn't so lucky, and takes another savage wound, this one across his face. They grin, revealing teeth filed to points.

Drow 2 moves to A17, drow 4 to B17. Both attack Andrei, both miss (though only because Andrei went defensive - nice move). Drow 1 takes a 5' step to K13, drow 3 moves up the stairs to M13, both attack Urthona. Drow 1 hits for 8 points of damage which, by my reckoning leaves Urthona on 0 hp and so staggered. Drow 3 misses.

Andrei Imarad wrote:

Andrei's actions (on his turn):

The danger of making actions before they are due - you will take 2 AoOs if you move, other than a 5' step, so be careful. Urthona's go.

Edit: I had Andrei in the wrong place on my map, so he gets an AoO as the drow go past him.

Male Shifter (Longstride) Barbarian 2/Fighter 1

5ft. step to L15. Ready Action: Attack, when the drows move forward.

Urthona hisses at the two darkskinned elves.

Female Half-elf Beguiler 3nd

So am I up now?

M Elf (Aeranal) Cleric 2

Andrei's revision is unlikely to affect my action.

Hamathin, realizing his exposure, steps back behind Urthona. Dropping his sunrod, Hamathin touches the holy symbol at his belt and invokes the name of an ancestor before reaching out to Urthona. The wound on the shifter's face begins to knit . . .

5' step to L16, swap out Comprehend Languages for CLW, 7+1=8hp healed.
Urthona, note that the drow have spiked chains -- they can attack you from where they are.

Female Half-elf Beguiler 3nd

Mirra watches the two drow quickly dart around Andrei. Damn this isn't good. she thinks as she reaches into her coat and grabs some red sand. She darts next to Rayne and shouts some arcane words throwing the sand at the drow.

Casting Color Spray from C19, should get both drow but not Andrei.
15 foot cone
DC 14 Will save negates
Spell resistance roll 10+1 + 4(action point) = 15
Each creature within the cone is affected according to its Hit Dice.
2 HD or less: The creature is unconscious, blinded, and stunned for 2d4 rounds, then blinded and stunned for 1d4 rounds, and then stunned for 1 round. (Only living creatures are knocked unconscious.)
3 or 4 HD: The creature is blinded and stunned for 1d4 rounds, then stunned for 1 round.
5 or more HD: The creature is stunned for 1 round.

Revised actions...

Andrei, glad that his extensive training in defensive maneuvers had kept him unharmed, rapidly switched to offense, a trick that could cause many combatants trouble, striking at the obsidian elf to his right. Drow 4

AoO. (1d20+5=23)

Damage. (1d8+3=7)

Damn, just missed out on a threat. I'm sooo taking improved crit when I can.

Following through, Andrei moved to strike the same elf again, letting out a battlecry as he did so. "For the Silver Flame!"

Attack Roll. (1d20+5=7)

Damn. I get a really good roll, then a bad one.

Andrei is now standing in A16, and is no longer Defensive (he dropped it to strike).

Male Shifter (Longstride) Barbarian 2/Fighter 1
Hamathin wrote:

Urthona, note that the drow have spiked chains -- they can attack you from where they are.

Correct, but otherwise I would not have been able to receive a cure spell without you getting an AOO and be able to strike before they do.

Urthonas eyes narrow in anticipation of the attack of the drow.

Mirra fires off he spell, and a blast of multi-coloured light errupts from her fingertips, engulfing both drow and Andrei. One drow clutches its face and falls the ground, dropping its chain and shrieking.

If you speak Elven:

Spoiler:
"I can't see!"

The other reels, but quickly recovers, seemingly unharmed.

Time for Andrei to roll. Don't forget you have action points.

Alidaber yells, "Where are you going?"

She delays until after Benedetto.

Now Shagraat.

Will Save. (1d20+1=5)

Even if I throw in an action point, and roll a natural 6, I'm not gonna make the DC for that save, so I won't bother. Curse you IC! I don't think it likes me - I should just use physical dice - My DM dice like me better.

EDIT: Yep, rolled a natural 17 (meaning I'd get a save roll of 18). Oh well, I guess its sleepy-time for the biggest meat-shield in the group! If they Coup de Grace me, I'm so haunting you guys!

I should start re-making a character now, huh? Maybe a hexblade. Or a Samurai. Think I could play a warrior with a rare fighting style?
