M Hobgoblin Monk 3

"Hmmm. Given the scene we left at the museum, and then at the gambling hall, I'd prefer not to get the watch involved. No telling where their questioning would lead, and I am not a practiced deceiver."

Looking around the quiet street, "This scene is probably going to require some subtlety to avoid getting the watch called as it is."

Is there any sign of a rear entrance to such a place? Also, does it look like it's just the single story (I'm assuming its ground floor)? Lastly, are there windows?

"We may need to do something under cover of darkness here."

Aubrey, is Hamathin still with us at this point as a DMPC?

Varies (tends towards Male) Changeling Warlock 3

"Well... first thing's first," the changeling glides up to the locked front door and knocks loudly.

"Maybe he's in there." Rayne shrugged. "If not, no harm done."

Shagraat wrote:

There is no sign of a rear entrance. There are two large windows at the front of the shop, but they are shuttered, and it is only a single storey.

Shagraat wrote:

Hamathin is still around.

Rayne wrote:

There is no reply to the knock.

Varies (tends towards Male) Changeling Warlock 3

"Well s+%+," the changeling muttered after a long pause. "Let me check to see if there's any way in up top..."

Rayne glanced up and down the street for any witnesses and made his way towards an inconspicuous part of the building. He took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and began effortlessly scaling the walls.

Enacting spiderwalk invocation. As spider climb plus immunity to natural and magical webbing. If there are too many witnesses about, then I will not attempt this action.

This corner of the tower is quiet, and Rayne clambers across the walls undisturbed. However, a quick recce confirms that there is only one way in to the shop - through the locked door.

Varies (tends towards Male) Changeling Warlock 3

The changeling crawls back down the wall head first in a most disturbingly unnatural manner. "Nothing up top. It's the door or nothing."

He frowned slightly.

M Hobgoblin Monk 3

"I'd think picking a lock is actually more subtle than crawling up the side of a building like a bug. Can anyone manage the lock?"

I'll stand watch and warn if anyone's coming.

Female Half-elf Beguiler 3nd

Mirra looks up and down the street and reaches into her belt pouch pulling out her tools, "I will give it a try, keep an eye out."

Search check 8+9 = 17 for traps or alarms
and can I take 20 for an open lock? if so 24
if not Open Lock check 10+4 = 14

M Hobgoblin Monk 3

If pertinent, spot is d20 + 4 = 16.

With the other party members shielding what she is doing from the casual glance of any passers-by, Mirra opens the lock. No one come very close.

The door opens. The interior of the shop is lit by an everbright lantern, and seems deserted. Cabinets contain odd trinkets, tablets and so on, with larger items on stands. The room itself is not very large, maybe 20' by 20', and cluttered. Behind the counter, another door leads into the back rooms of the shop.

Knowledge (History) check, DC 15:

Spoiler:
Most of the items here look like ther were sourced in Xendrik, though few look very old.

Search, DC 16:

Spoiler:
You notice a magical glyph on the door jamb, but it seems to have been mostly erased.

If you made the above Search check, try a Knowledge (Arcana) check, DC 21:

Spoiler:
It looks like the remains of an Alarm spell, but is inert.

Male Shifter (Longstride) Barbarian 2/Fighter 1

Search (1d20=2)
Knowledge? Naaa...

Urthona goes once through the shop, but his eyes reveal nothing interesting, at least to him. So he again takes up his guarding position at the entrance.

M Hobgoblin Monk 3

Shagraat moves around the office, examining items without really touching much.

The hobgoblin speaks in a hoarse whisper. "Our friend Harmal appears to be a Xendrik afficionado - no surprise there, I guess."

Shagraat points out the faded glyph on the door jamb to Colvare. "Any idea what that was?"

Know(history) d20 + 6 = 18.
Search d20 + 2 = 16.

Listening for sounds from deeper in the building, Shagraat moves over to the counter and the door behind it.

"Unfortunately, appearances can be deceptive. I'm no trained Mage, and I haven't ever studied magical item creation, or theory. Something I would like to change in the near future.

"It's a magical glyph of some type, but that's all I can say I'm afraid."

Unless Aubrey allows untrained Knowledge checks when they are a class skill :), then again, I rolled a 12....grrr

Colvare wrote:

For the avoidance of doubt - no, I don't.

Shall I assume you are all following Shagraat to the next door?

Okey Doke, will be putting a rank or two that way then :)

Aubrey the Demented/Malformed wrote:

Colvare follows Shagraat, into the next room.

Female Half-elf Beguiler 3nd

Mirra puts her tools away and steps into the shop. She quickly starts looking around but finds nothing interesting in the first room.

Search 5+9= 14

M Hobgoblin Monk 3

I'll defer to Mirra for addressing whatever challenges the door may present - unless we need to knock it down of course. Then I'm your hobgoblin!

By the way, somewhat belatedly, 50 xp each for dealing with Gora.

Varies (tends towards Male) Changeling Warlock 3

While the others search the room, Rayne draws upon his innate power and scans the items in the room for magical auras.

Detect magic at will is fun! Anything stand out?

Male Human Ardent 5 / Flayerspawn 1

Despite his success at the rooming house, Benedetto really isn't all that cut out for snooping around. He's pretty good with various people skills, though, so he's going to stand outside the building and keep watch. He's keeping a particular eye out for the rooftops.

OK, so we have Benedetto outside and the others, presumably, inside (shout out if this is not so).

Inside the shop:

Spoiler:
The inside of the shop is quite shadowy, the everbright lantern giving off a fitful glow. Behind the counter, the door to the rooms behind the shop front is closed. A quick look shows that the wood around the lock is split, indicating that it has been forced.

OK, what now?

Outside the shop:

Spoiler:
Benedetto watches the passers-by warily as the others deal with what is inside the shop. There seem to be a few people going about their business, but no one seems particularly interested in this corner of the tower so far.

Try a Spot check, DC 10. If you make that, try a Listen check and a Sense Motive check, both DC 15.

You detect no magical auras in the shop.

Male Human Sorcerer 3

Inside:

Spoiler:

"Looks like we may have gotten here too late too guys, Shagraat, you want to go first?"

Male Human Ardent 5 / Flayerspawn 1

Outside:

Spoiler:
Spot check 1d20 + 3: [18,3] = (21)

Listen check 1d20 + 2: [2,2] = (4) (Whatever Benedetto could've heard was drowned out by a passing wagon.)

Sense Motive check, with Action Point 1d20 + 4 + 1d6: [12,4,4] = (20).

Outside:

Spoiler:
You notice a couple of men chatting outside another shop, probably 30 yards away. At first they look like they are simply having a conversation and haven't noticed you, but you realise they are surreptiously observing you. You cannot hear what they are saying.

Inside:

Spoiler:
OK, anyone doing anything with the door?

Male Human Ardent 5 / Flayerspawn 1

Spoiler:

Any details about the men? Shopkeepers? City guards? Hobgoblin toughs? Armed? Armored?

Do they look like they've been there for a while?

Benedetto doesn't quite turn to look into the shop --it's more a case of his taking a slow view up and down the street-- but she he's looking in the direction of the door, he says, quietly and conversationally:

"Rayne? You got time to come talk to some observant-like folks?"

Spoiler:

I thought we were going through it, but Colavre ain't going first!

M Hobgoblin Monk 3

Sorry guys. A business trip took me away from all things recreational for 24 hours. I was thinking Mirra might check the door for traps before I went in, but what the hell, I have a pretty good reflex save...

Shagraat opens the door and peers in.

Inside:

Spoiler:
Shagraat gingerly opens the door, which opens towards him.

The next chamber is a stockroom of some kind, with shelves filled with crates and packages, maybe thirty feet long. The nearest part is more open and set up as an office, with a desk covered in papers and a chair behind it. Sitting in the chair, the lower half of his body hidden by the desk, is a well-dressed man, maybe in his forties with greying hair. His head lolls back over the back of his chair and his mouth hangs open slackly, as does the horrific wound in his neck which gapes raggedly. The front of his clothing is covered in blood and a large pool of it runs from under the desk.

As Shagraat gazes at the ghastly corpse, there is a light thud. A string, tied to the handle of the door on the inside of the stockroom, pulls over a book on a shelf to the left, landing on another propped volume. This causes a red bead, glowing faintly with an inner fire, that rested on the second tome to be catapulted from the shelf towards the desk.

Outside:

Spoiler:
Try another Sense Motive, and another Listen. The pair continue to chat amiably. They begin to walk, still chatting, towards the shop and Benedetto.

Meanwhile, a largish skycoach, more wagon-sized for carrying cargo than for passenger use, gently floats into view and touches down at a deserted landing at the edge of the tower, maybe twenty yards away.

Varies (tends towards Male) Changeling Warlock 3

Rayne smirked as the hobgoblin prepared to make his entrance. "Of course, Benny."

The changeling turned and stepped outside to see what was going on.

(Rayne can see the 'outside' spoiler, above.)

Male Human Ardent 5 / Flayerspawn 1

Outside:

Spoiler:

Listen 1d20 + 3: [19,3] = (22)

Sense Motive, expending my focus: 1d20 + 4 + 10: [9,14] = (23)

Benedetto smiles at Raine and says, towards the door, "Hurry it up in there, folks. And find a back way out, if ya can."

Outside:

Spoiler:
The men are trying to be casual about it, but they definately are making a beeline for the shop. And Benedetto can hear them now - Thranish accents.

Inside:

Spoiler:
By the way, you need to think of your immediate, split-second reaction to this.

M Hobgoblin Monk 3

inside:

Spoiler:

Shagraat's reaction is to dive back around the corner and use the wall for cover against what he assumes is a deadly trap.

Sorry folks. If that's a fireball, I don't think our friendly neighborhood hobgoblin is up to the task of diving on the papers on the off chance there's something good there. Even half damage from a normal low-level fireball's gonna smoke me.

Choosing discretion as the better part of valor, Shagraat will make tracks for the front door as soon as he's able to react further.

Varies (tends towards Male) Changeling Warlock 3

Outside:

Spoiler:
Rayne leans towards Ben and murmurs. "Get ready for a fight, I don't think these guys are gonna play nice..." The changeling then steps forward to stand on the street level directly in front of the shop with a smug look on his face. He watches the men approaching and waves pleasantly at them.

Male Human Ardent 5 / Flayerspawn 1

Outside:

Spoiler:
Benedetto attempts a greeting to the fellers, a blessings of that Silver Fire stuff, with his best attempt at a Thranish accent.

Knowledge (religion)? 1d20+2: [11,2] = (13)
Diplomacy? 1d20: [15] = (15)
Disguise? 1d20: [14] = (14)
Well, I'll be dog-gone. That's practically mediocre! Much better'n what I was expecting!

Inside:

Spoiler:
Shagraat leaps to one side. The bead arcs over to the desk and detonates with a soft crump and whoosh. A rapidly expanding hemisphere of orange flame briefly fills the room, leaving blazing papers, burning shelves and the smell of smoke, and a blast of heat washes over those by the door. The stockroom rapidly turns into an inferno, the corpse in the chair surrounded by tongues of flame as the various artefacts go up in smoke around it.

Outside:

Spoiler:
The two men continue their amble to the shop doorway. They are about to speak when, from inside the shop, there is a flash of red light, a whooshing noise, and then the crackling sound of a fire and the smell of smoke.

"By the Flame!" exclaims one, "They are using fireballs - take them down!" They quickly draw daggers and coshes from inside their coats and move to attack.

Roll initiative.

Male Human Sorcerer 3

"F@#~!" Colvare ducks to the opposite side of the doorway from the hobgoblin.

"Well, so much for subtlety!"

Nice fire, though. :-)

Male Human Ardent 5 / Flayerspawn 1

lol

Inside:

Spoiler:

As the explosion dies down, Colvare looks back into the room, looking out primarily for anything that might have survived the blast and be worth retrieving [ooc](is the body moving like it might not be quite dead, are there any papers that escaped etc etc etc)[ooc].

Roll(1d20=14) So 17 for sport or 15 for search.

He cannot help but be distracted by the flames though, and begins dwelling again on his fateful past...

Init: (1d20 2=10)

Inside:

Spoiler:
There doesn't seem to be anything much to see, other than a big fire. In fact, given that the room next door is burning quite merrily, hanging about in the shop might not be a good long term plan.
