Hey, Aubrey, how'd you like to playtest the cavalier? We can switch Rolund's paladin/bone knight levels to cavalier levels.
The background can remain the same. Only Rolund was once a member of the order of the star (Silver Flame) but his new allegiance to Karrnath makes him a member of the order of the lion.
If its too much trouble I can drop the idea. Just wanted to see how the cavalier handles in play.

We kind of avoided playtesting stuff when the Beta was out. I'm not actually that keen to participate in a playtest as rules and stuff aren't really that big a deal for me. If, after the rules come out in final, you still want to be a cavalier, we can talk about it then.

LOL. I think I can safely say I would be admiring the genius of the tactic even if my character was being swept downstream (as she almost assuredly would be).
Which brings to mind - do we know yet which direction the river is flowing?
EDIT: Does the +30 to speed equate to a +12 for Acrobatics for everyone benefiting from the spell, or will the folks that are slowed by armor get less bonus to Acrobatics, also?

It doubles your speed, up to a maximum of +30. For those in heavy or medium armour, their speed is now 40', so they will get +4. For those in light armour and a rate of 60', they get a +12. However, they need to make a Reflex save first, though the Haste will give them +1 to that too.

So I'm looking at Beguiler spells for combat applications and I thought I'd post stuff here so other could chime in with tactics and ideas.
Here's a nice combo you and I can pull off:
Black Tentacles + Vertigo Field (L3)
Ez grapples them and you lay vertigo field right on top of the tentacles. If they fail your save they are nauseated and thus incapable of escaping or fighting back against the tentacles. Vertigo Field is a Fort save so warrior types won't always fall to it, but you and I could destroy arcane casters with that combo. If they fail your Fort save they can't cast, and there is no way a caster will physically make it out of my tentacles. We should name this combo so we can call it out on the battle field. Then one of us readies an action so that they both go off together. We could do this on the shaman right now. If he makes the will wave he might cast his way out of the tentacles, but he might not make it. If he does, you might be able to try again the following turn. Alternatively, you could Silence a point in space near the caster within the tentacles. That would just about be the end for for an arcane caster.
Looking at other combat spells...
Deep Slumber (L3) - is close range for some reason unlike Sleep, but would work if you were closer. Up to 10 HD total.
Halt (L3) - close range, end target's movement at any point you specify along its path, 1 round. This spell is an immediate action. That is kind of an ace in the hole when you need it. Will save so you can possibly make a warrior type lose its attack right in the middle of its move.
Hesitate (L3) - Close range, Will. Also an immediate action and lasts 1 round/level, but allows a save every turn. Limits target to a move action.
Hold Person (L3) - Medium range, Will, 1 rnd/level. Save every round, but as a full round action.
Inevitable Defeat (L3) - Touch, Will (no save 1st round), 1 rnd/level. 3d6 non lethal damage every round until they save.
Legion of Sentinels (L3) Close, 1 rnd/level. 10' burst of 4 ghost fighters that can flank with allies and make AoO's. You can jam up the battle field a little, though people can shoot or move right through them. They can't move though. This spell is messed up, the fighters have hp and AC, but no attack or damage mentioned. Also, you don't block terrain, line of effect, or movement can be placed on top of enemies or allies, but they are physical enough to have normal AC and normal attacks- not ghost style touch attacks? There must be errata on this one.
Silence (L3) - Long, Will, 1 rnd/level. One of your rare long range spells. Will save, but if you don't actually target the caster, they don't get to save. I imagine you could ready an action to silence casting and then lay it on a point in space. You'd only get one 1 round out of that use (because they will move next turn), but it is assured without a save when we are desparate.
Slow (L3) - Close, Will, 1 rnd/level.
Suggestion (L3) - Close range, Will, but 1 hour/level if you give a long duration idea.
Blinding Color Surge (L2) Medium, Will, 1 rnd/lvl. Blind a target one round, plus you go invisible whether they save or not.
Blur (L2) Touch, 1 min/lvl. None of your front line allies taking those hits are going to turn down a buff.
Hypnotic Pattern (L2) - Medium, Will, Concentration +2 rnds. 10ft radius. You can tie up from 7-15 HD worth of badness with this spell depending on your roll. This will scale up to 10-18 HD at its max as you level so it is still useful for a while. Careful placement to ensure you get the one you want and not his lackey helps.
Stay the Hand (L2) - Medium, Will, Instant. Kinda lame. Target who planned to attack you can't (this time only) if it fails the save. It can however redirect its attack to someone else at -4, or a concentration check for spells. It is another immediate action spell though.
Touch of Idiocy (L2) - Touch, No Save, 10 min/level. No save is nice :)
Whelming Burst (L2) - 30' cone, Will. 1d6/2 CL, max 5d6, Non lethal. No shame in non-lethal- it takes em down, and a 30' cone is pretty sweet.
Various Illusions - Creatively describe whatever you want to block line of sight, create false targets to draw attacks, limit the terrain enemies will be willing to cross, or whatever else you can think up.
So basically for full casting capacity you need to be just behind the front line. The vast majority of your combat spells target warrior types and are close range. You do have the capability to tear up a battlefield or extremely hinder opponents who have minds. Your list is more about denying the enemy than actual attacks, but your blade swinging friends will love you for leaving their opponents momentarily lobotomized :)
And don't forget those immediate action spells that jack up enemy moves. Those are a sweet spot on your spell list I never noticed before. You can basically fire them off as a bonus in addition to your normal actions when the situation arises. I guess you'd have to lay your intention out like a readied contingency for Aubrey to apply if it came into play on the enemy init count.
Anybody else see nice combo's that layer with their own abilities?

Hey, thanks for that, I need the additional perspective -- I'm so used to foes that ignore my spells, I haven't looked at it close for a while.
Yes, there's errata on the Legion of Sentinels - or Aubrey and I agreed on some, I forget which.
...and looking on my computer, I don't see the document I made for it, either. I believe the decision was their BAB would be the spellcaster's level with damage equal to a longsword of their size and the damage bonus of the spellcasting ability. Something along those lines...
I also have Fly from my Advanced Learning -- my current plan is to make use of that for our fallen friends.

AinvarG |

Actually, virtually all the ancounters you have had since leaving Sharn have been with enemies succeptible to mental attack.
Can't promise going forward...
You know, I wasn't trying to complain about my spell selection, just commenting on how my Haste spell is nearly always a good choice. I really haven't lacked for something to try in these battles, even if I've not tried to mess with the minds of our enemies. Yet.

Apologies for my lack of posting recently. A much busier than normal week or two at work, combined with real life dramas and computer problems at home have conspired to keep me away from Paizo for the most part for the last week or so. I’m not sure when things will calm down at work (and in life) but at least the computer at home is fixed, so hopefully my posting rate will get back to something approaching normal.

Yeah, she's my friend too for some reason (and her girlfriend). But then I'm friends with a few people I've never heard of, but then again with aliases and stuff I don't really know who anyone much is.
The bender was to celebrate his 5 years at the Pru. Although it was also to drown our sorrow since things seem to be turning a bit ugly for our department in the organisation.

To extemporise on the theme of things turning ugly, I may have to tone down and reduce my posting at work. The powers that be seem to be turning on the Internal Audit department somewhat - the head of Asia has been sacked and the overall head seems to be hanging by a thread (though he may well have a new job to go to). Either way, scrutiny is increasing and I don't really want to take a chance in the current environment. The fairly free and easy attitude we had in the department was a measure of the tone at the top, and if he goes (which he will) then that will probably change. My head is probably below the parapet but I think a bit of precautionary action is advisable.

We're having a late one here with the Greek family. Just a novelty reason to get to together for them since they don't have the holiday. Been cooking all day. 2 pecan pies, 2 pumpkin pies, my version of the green bean casserole, deviled eggs... bringing Arkansas to the party. :)
Jo said that all these articles she sees in American shows and websites about dealing with the stress of large family gatherings are completely alien to her as that is status quo for Greeks. Heh. So many people here live with their parents until thirty something and then buy a place in the same neighborhood.

I've seen similar things written about Christmas - so much to do, and so little time! Thankfully we're just having a low-pressure thing with the in-laws, so no stress here. Hopefully y'all have enjoyed yourselves as much as I have.
BTW, I just finished Tim Powers' The Anubis gates, and it was one of the most amazing things I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Highly recommended for anyone wanting good read for he holidays.

I actually have a spare copy (I screwed up an Amazon order). Email me your address and I'll send you the extra. I'm at: sbodung (at) hotmail (dot) com.
Thanks mate! Very generous of you. We'll have to figure out a way for me to get you some money for it though, International shipping halfway across the world isn't that cheap (I guess).

No idea. But I've always wanted to visit Australia (I was this close to being an Aussie - my dad had a job offer in Perth, but my mom apparently couldn't get a work permit, so they stayed in Norway), and I'll certainly go to Sydney if I make it all the way to the bottom of the world.

Awesome. I think my next foray into Tim Powers' mad writings will be Declare - "A Cold War spy novel set in the Caucasus featuring djinn, Kim Philby and Noah's Ark". How good must that be? Oh, and The Anubis Gates feature the coolest spellcasters ever. If you don't steal those you'd be nuts.
