map of England in 1192

Its the year 1192 A.D. The place . . . England.

Story so Far:

It is the end of the Third Crusade, and King Richard Plantagenet "the Lionhearted" had ended the Crusade in October of 1192 A.D. (300 years later, Columbus would sail the Ocean blue). On his way back, his enemy, Leopold V of Austria captured King Richard Plantagenet.

Of those that escaped Leopold V of Austria are a company of brave men loyal to the King and allied with Sir Wilfred of Ivanhoe. Norman or Saxon, Irishman or Scotsman; they are all brave and true men.

They have returned to England from the Holy Land of Palestine, seeking their homes and their families. However, danger lurks in England. Prince John has seized the Regency from Longchamps of England, and declared himself Prince Regent. Goblins, werewolves, and dragons abound in dangerous places.

Background:

The Campaign is based off of Sir Walter Scott's novel Ivanhoe. Robin Hood and his band of merrymen are seen as armed robbers or bandits in Sherwood Forest. The High Sheriff of Nottingham, William Brewer, is seen as unpopular amongst common people for his overhanded way of being the High Sheriff of Berkshire, Cornwall, Devon, Hampshire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, Oxfordshire, Somerset and High Sheriff of Dorset, Sussex and Wiltshire. Under him is the Sheriff of Nottingham, Robert Tornham, who is Richard's man.

Eleanor of Acquitaine is still somewhere in the story, trying to keep John on the right path. Prince John Plantagenet, however, believes that he can be a better king than Richard Plantagenet.
And so he looks for support within England and gets it. However, England's people are poor and are being taxed for Richard's Ransom. And Leopold has captured Richard and is demanding a year and a half's worth of money from the English Exchequer. And this is the world that the PCs come into. Besides the persecutions of the Saxons by the Normans.

Creating Characters:

Since this is the first time running 5e for most of you, why not go all out.

Dice for Statistic rolls: roll 3d6 6 times, arrange to taste.

Races:

Any race is allowed. PCs are expected to be English countrymen that give their allegiance to King Richard Plantagenet during the Third Crusade. This goes for members of all races, although foreigners are allowed.

Humans. There are five Human Ethnic groups (although all are European). Tensions between Saxons (who speak English), and Normans (who speak French) are high due to persecution of the Normans on the Saxons. Further north (York and Lincolnshire) are the Danish Englishmen, who speak English with Danish and Norse words. Further north is Scotland -- peopled by the Gaelic Scots. To the west is Wales, where the Cymry still live, they speak Welsh. Across the sea are the Irish. They speak Gaelic Irish. Across the channel is France. They, of course, speak French.

Dwarves. Any D&D Dwarves are descendants of the Danes in Yorkshire Lincolnshire, and Northumberland. They speak Dwarven. (Players may use a Scottish accent.)

Elves. Elves occupy the strange places of England. Called the Sidhe, they are the remaining Beaker People. They keep their culture alive on Anglesey and other hidden places, as well as the islands that are sandwiched between Ireland and England. All three are available, but the Drow are mistrusted, and a drow hero of the Crusades will have to work hard to gain honor among the Englishmen.

Halflings. Halflings are found all over, but their strongest population centers are in Eire (Ireland), the Orkneys, and the county of Kent.

Dragonborn. All dragonborn comes from the kingdom of Arc Teryx (the Islands of Sardinia and Corsica), and the city of Tethyrias in Sicily. The largest population of dragonborn in England is the city of Sarum.

Gnomes. Gnomes are rare, and they are from Germany.

Half-elves, and Half-orcs. The orcs in England are found in mountainous areas. Most orcs in the world occupy the lands of the Ukraine, Belarus, and Georgia. Half-orcs in England are a vary rare sight. And so are Half-elves.

Tieflings. The second to third generation of a union between human and fiend. The most common are the Pitborn and the Hellspawn (both of which are represented by the base statistics).

Classes:

Any class is allowed. Warlocks are treated as sons and daughters of the devil and any who are found out to be such are typically burned at the stake. Wizards are treated with awe. Sorcerers are treated with suspicion.

Backgrounds:

Make your own up. Use the ones provided to prove your inspiration. Alignments: I'd like good or neutral alignments, though. I will consider one PC who is lawful evil, though.

Last details:

All PCs may choose 1 feat to represent their veteran experience in the Holy Land during the Third Crusade.

And that's it. I'll let you figure out your equipment yourself. A trinket from the Holy Land is not out of Character, though.

Wondering_Monster here.

1: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 2) = 14
2: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 2) = 11
3: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 2) = 12

5: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 6) = 18

Now lets see what I can do with this.

Is it required that we be a returning Knight?

Artegallio "The Gardener" wrote:

No, not at all. :) I love Artegallio's background! :)

Assuming that it's okay that I reroll, i'll do so here in the 100% official recruitment forum =)

3d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 4) = 12
3d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 4) = 13
3d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 3) = 14
3d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 3) = 10
3d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 1) = 7
3d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 2) = 10

Wait, what, we get a shot at a reroll?

I have input Artegallio's background into this alias as a spoiler, and edited it to change his mother to an Elven Woman, and also make the "Lady" he loves an Elven Woman.

okay. and yes.

Maybe it's the onset of puberty

3d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 4) = 6
3d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 6) = 17
3d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 5) = 8
3d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 3) = 7
3d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 2) = 5

eeek, no thank you

Continuing my questions about languages from the interest thread, what are your thoughts on using Occitan as the trade (or common) tongue?

As to the reroll, I asked but ne'er got a response. If I can't I can somehow make my previous rolls work, but...

Well, your new rolls are okay, though I liked the two sixteens in your previous one.

Occitan, as in the speech of Marseilles during 1192? Yes, it can also be allowed as a trade tongue.

Shadow Lodge

3d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 5) = 13
3d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 4) = 11
3d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 5) = 11
3d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 4) = 11
3d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 4) = 11
3d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 2) = 8

I had no 16s, unfortunately. I my previous stats were 6,7,9,10,10,12.

Are you looking at any racial restrictions vis-a-vis nations? (i.e. orcs are from the Iraq, elves have to be from France, and so on).

Orcs are from the Ukraine, as I said before. ;) There is a very large population of Elves in the south of France. They are the Elfes de Marseille, or the Massalian Elves. Once masters of Demonic lore and magic, Christianity changed all of that.

Of course. (rolls eyes.)

Gnomes are from Germany, the Dwarves are from Thule (Scandinavia). Halflings -- about the size of African pygmies; have a lot in common in culture with the Romany people.

Just read up on tieflings, what a way to explore racism and discrimination in a game than to play a noble tiefling, only to have all the doors shut in your face and no amount of proving your honor will get you large scale acceptance.

Hmm . . . the dragonborn race has it easier.

Yeah, I'm waiting for my PHB too. I was thinking of playing a traditional human paladin with the noble background. Sir Brackenbury. But the Paladin class and Noble background are both in PHB. So its hard to start creating the character or his background right now. He is a Saxon, though, so I'm trying to remember if the Saxons supported the Plantaganets or if they were more behind the Tudors ancestors. Of course, being politically savvy, they would have supported both claims. :P

Background:

Background: Guild Artisan
Guild Business: Apothecary
Trait: I like to talk at length about my profession.
Ideal: Greed.
Bond: I owe my guild a great debt for forging me into the
person I am today.
Flaw: I would kill to acquire a noble title.

Story:

Bryseis was born twenty years ago, for the first twelve years of her life she was poor and wretched... Then she went to the holy land as a stowaway, while in the holy land she ran away from templars bent on her death into the burning desert.

Through the desert she marched and then miraculously she came upon an ancient ruin, a shrine to a demon known as Mammon: Prince of Greed. Bryseis could understand the writings scrawled across the shrine instinctively and in her wretchedness, pain and desperation something kindled: Greed.

The Infernal writing seemed to inspire something in her, a lust for gold and riches, a desire to be wealthy and pampered for all her days. It did not take her long to find the old, jewel encrusted knife near the Altar, nor did it take her long to begin the rite.

Mammon, Prince of Greed, Lord of all that glitters I swear eternal allegiance to thee in both this life and next. All I ask is that you oh Argent Prince of riches give me your favor, let gold flow into my coffers and wealth forevermore be mine.

As she spoke the words of the ceremony Bryseis took the knife and slit her hand open, she plunged it into the fire she had lit upon the Altar... A screaming pain entered her body and soul but then subsided, as she withdrew her hand from the fire her blood still flowed...like molten gold in both color and consistency.

From that day onward Bryseis was blessed with the favor of the Argent Prince of Babylon, fortune turned her way when she met Sir Wilfred of Ivanhoe. In his company the tiefling learned the the ways of the apothecary from an aged alchemist which the Knight had brought from Wales. Bryseis made sure to keep her other "talents" hidden and just seemed to show an extreme mastery of the alchemical arts.

When she finally left the service of Sir Wilfred (two years ago) she returned to England and seemingly without opposition joined one of the most prestigious guilds in England, The Royal Apothecary Society of London. Mammon's favor was great indeed and now Bryseis prepares to greet her old acquaintance as he arrives in London...

Appearance:

Bryseis wears a set of leather clothing, she is covered from her neck to hands in leather. While most would assume this is because of the chemicals she handles (like Greek fire) it also serves to hide any wounds which bleed like molten gold something which would likely land her on the stake for sure.

Bryseis herself appears to be an exceptionally sharp woman, her horns curling over her head like the horns of a ram and her eyes are pure gold in color. She wears leather trousers when working and will also wear a skirt on occasion, she hides two daggers on her person (one in each boot).

Goals:

A life of hardship has bred jealously and greed in Bryseis's heart, Greed is her patron and it this primordial force that governs her thoughts and actions.

Bryseis desires not only greed but comfort as well, above all else she never wants to return to a life of squalor in the hell known as poverty. This is what drives her to by hoof or crook gain a noble title for herself, a noble is as faraway from poverty as you can get.

Despite her greedy heart though Bryseis isn't actively malevolent, she desires to achieve wealth, nobility and comfort by using guild connections which are numerous. She will also support her former employer, Sir Wilfred of Ivanhoe. He is after all a valuable connection to the nobility, one which she can exploit for her own gain.

GM your verdict?

Okay, she looks alright. :)

It was complicated, if I remember correctly. Many Saxon nobles would try to marry their daughters to Norman nobility, so they can continue to have pull. GURPS Robin Hood had this to say:

Please remember that some of the most important points of the Robin Hood legend as it is known today are pseudehistory. Although the tales (primarily influenced by Sir Walter Scott's Ivanhoe) now focus on the conflict between Norman and Saxon during the late 12th century, in reality, there was no such conflict. Over the intervening 125 or so years, the conquerors and the conquered merged into a single culture and a single people. While it was possible to talk of Norman blood and Saxon blood, it would have been more like a modem American talking about his immigrant acestors than the immediate ethnic conflict portrayed in many of the recent retellings.

---------

single culture and a single people. <--> This part is totally untrue. The Free men, Yeomen, and Villeins would normally speak English. While the Norman Nobility spoke French. While the above is mostly true, the two Languages were separate from each other. Study the history of English, and you will have a better understanding as to what was happening in Norman England.

After England loses the Aquitaine and Brittany; English starts borrowing the Norman lexicon into itself. By the time of Chaucer, English becomes more of what it is today.

I guess I had better start with some roles before I try and figure out what kind of character I want to play!

3d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 2) = 8
3d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 2) = 5
3d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 6) = 13

3d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 2) = 7
3d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 3) = 8

Well with rolls like that I do not think I will be playing anything! Too bad, it looked like a great game, and as a medieval historian it would have been fun!...oh well the dice have spoken

Ok..thanks....

3d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 4) = 12

3d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 4) = 13
3d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 6) = 11
3d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 2) = 13

Well that is better...I can do something with those numbers.
I was thinking of either a Jewish mystic, or a scottish thane. As you know, in Scotland, the "Davidian Revolution" was in full swing, as King David I began to replace the Scottish nobility with Anglo-Norman nobility; creating such institutions as the Justicar to overlook justice and Shire-reeves (Sheriffs). With William I now King of Scotland (having payed off Richard with 10,000 silver marks in 1189) Anglo-Scottish relations are strained.

I always figured that the Scottish would be colored by the 1991 movie Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves, so I thought it would be a perfect place for barbarians to come from. (That class always rubs me the wrong way when setting it in the High Middle Ages. Gives me a bad taste in my mouth, since the age of the Romanced Barbarian is long gone by the High Middle Ages.)

Conan the Barbarian is a throw back. And REH's Hyboria is a hash of different ages in history. Kinda like the world that D&D always assumed, except for 2nd Edition.

Got my PHB today, will start learning about Druids

I think I might explore the idea of a Jewish Kabbala Wizard. Maybe a friend of Isacc of York and his daughter, Rebecca. What do you think?? Will work up the crunch and fluff and get it submitted.

edit - I was also going to be human and wanted to know if it was ok to use the alternate traits for humans, as per the book.

Right. There are like three themes you can pick up, so everyone is livid for splats to expand on the themes everyone has.

if you use the alternate traits, you only get the one feat. Just the one.

Isaac of York – the father of Rebecca; a Jewish merchant and money-lender -- Just had to double check, because there is another rich Jew in the story. Make yourself young enough, and you can woo Rebecca.

According to Wikipedia, your character would know Talmudic Hebrew for reading the Old Testament. But since it's Wikipedia *shrugs* there's no guarantees that's accurate. I'd just add Hebrew, but in the notes just put down medieval Hebrew so there's no confusion.

Yes. But you get the only extra feat (everyone else gets one, so you can't have two).

doing a slight redo here, you can't be a Warlock without a far more "active" patron... At least when your dealing with Hell.

The Shrine scene:

As Bryseis finished the incantation inscribed upon the altar the golden braziers she had lit began to smoke... The smoke slowly coalesced over the altar, before her stood a massive Minotaur clad in great silk robes of red and gold. His horns were made of pure gold and his skin was a ruddy brown-red, his eyes glimmered like black pits lit by the fires of Hell.

His voice was ancient and filled with the earthly wisdom of Hell, summoner you have invoked the name of Mammon and I his greatest servitor have answered your call. To complete your pact you need only drink from this chalice.

In her hands a chalice wrought of pure gold and carved with glowing infernal runes appeared. The chalice was filled with molten gold, she looked into the contents of the chalice warily and then made her choice. As she drained the cup she felt no pain, the gold was sweeter then the honey she had once stolen in market: it was like liquid ambrosia.

They never told me that sin tasted so sweet...

Bryseis finished the chalice and it disappeared, in her gut she felt something happening, the bleeding wound on her hand was no longer blood red...it was the color and consistency of molten gold.

Now child of Babylon go, Mammon will ensure your fortune so long as you perform the occasional favor for him in the future.

With that the infernal bull disappeared in a cloud of smoke and Bryseis was left to contemplate the new opportunities opened up to her...

Patron, the Brazen Bull of Babylon:

The Brazen Bull
Origin: The Brazen Bull first appeared before Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon when the the rebellion in Jerusalem began. The setbacks in his war against Egypt had set Nebuchadnezzar II back dearly and he lacked the power to crush the Jews who possessed many powerful wizards. The Brazen Bull offered Nebuchadnezzar and his court a deal, drink from the golden chalice of Mammon and receive the power to destroy Jerusalem. Nebuchadnezzar II and his court accepted the offer, in doing so they become on the major tiefling bloodlines (there are several others). The Brazen Bull would remain as the Royal Adviser of Nebuchadnezzar II and many of his descendants until the downfall of Babylon.
Communication: The Brazen Bull when he desires to make his wishes known appears before the Warlock typically in a private setting. The Brazen Bull is careful to never ask an "impossible" demand or one that would go against the monetary interests of the Warlock. For the Brazen Bull understands that his Warlocks are greedy beings who hold onto their gold for dear life.
Goals: The Brazen Bull is enigmatic, his goals are shrouded in mystery and legend. What is known is that the Brazen Bull often guides his Warlocks to some form of greatness and unlike most demons he seems to have a vested interest in their advancement especially towards positions of great power...

GM do you like the Patron?

yes.

Oooooo,,this should be interesting...A tiefling warlock connected to the court of Nebuchadnezzar and a Jewish Kabbala Wizard......let the sparks fly!!!

no, no it's not sparks it's hellfire!

It's too bad she isn't a paladin. *sigh*

I could imagine a fighter tiefling along the lines of Bronn from The Game of Thrones (or more likely a warlock of the blade masquerading as one) but not a paladin...

On the contrary, Paladins can express themselves in different alignments than Lawful Good. Although, I'd love to see a Lawful Good tiefling try and make their way in the world.

story:

Amos Windelton is a half-elf raised by his human parent. When the crusade started he decided to go off and seak glory. Being a half-elf wasnt easy back home or at war. At that time he was pretty ordinary.

At some point during the war he nearly died. Blacked out for 3 days. Some how he survived. Ever since he has had these magical powers. Unfortunatly due to fear of persicution, he know must pretend to be a wizard.

I was going to start up a wiki, but I don't know what to call it. :(

This is the first time I attempted to run a campaign in Medieval Europe. Despite all the Historical References I collected for AD&D. (the Celts, Rome, Greece, the Crusades, and Charlemagne's Paladins).

Looking things over, I see that we are arcane heavy and light on everything else. So, I have decided to pull my sorcerer and replace with this Bard. I believe he can handle healing, skills, archery, more spells, control, and support. I also think he fits the setting better.

story:

Amos Windelton went off to fight in the holy land. There he did very little fighting and spent most of his time as a healer. He

did see some disturbing things, but his time wasn't as bad as most.

Since returning to England, he now travels from tavern to tavern telling great stories. He no longer has a home. Due to the new

kings tax, he has lost everything. So he make a coin where he can.

Lately he has been hearing tells of this Robing Hood. These stories have inspired him to do the same. He wants to use his

skills and knowledge to help the poor, and rob the rich.
