Aardvark DM |
I cannot contain myself any longer, and have decided to run a Skull & Shackles PbP here on the forums. Recruitment will close one week from today (on the 5th of May).
I am looking for four players who can post regularly (ideally every 24 hours). I understand slow posting on weekends, and I myself will not often post on Fridays and Saturdays (Game night and Family night respectively). I am fairly active on the boards, and check them frequently, and though I may not always have time to post a response I often enjoy just following IC dialogue amongst the PC's.
Character creation guidelines are as follows:
20 pt buy
Core races only (Dwarf, Elf, Gnome, Half Elf, Halfling, Half-Orc, Human)
Classes Allowed are all PF classes except: Paladin, Gunslinger, Ninja, Samurai, and Antipaladin.
2 Traits, one of which must be from the S&S player's guide
Average starting gold (Guns are allowed, but not common)
HP's are max at first, and either rolled or take half at each level after, decided BEFORE each roll is made.
The characters should be willing to act as pirates. I'm not saying I'm looking for a gang of vicious cutthroats, but the law-abiding goody-goodys should be kept to a minimum. I won't be expecting the 'RP during recruitment' aspect of everyone gathered in the Formidably Maid. I would, however, like to see a background included as to what brought you to Port Peril in the first place.
I run combats with a linked map, and turn-based (not group action). I feel that many of the rules of the game are balanced off how they interact in turn and based off their area of effects. I realize this may slow down the posting speed waiting on any individual to go. That being said, if someone does not take their turn within 24 hours of it coming up, then they will be delayed. If they do not post before the round ends, their turn is forfeited.
If there are any more questions, please feel free to ask and i will try to get back to you as soon as I can.
Kenji Jehu |
Here is Kenji. He only needs starting.gold ammended and the Skull and shackles trait. (Currently has Magical lineage, Wayang spellhunter for the -1 metamagic costs, cause he's a metamagic specialist)
He's an Arcane Blooded Blaster/battle control type sorcerer. Human Fovored bonus goes to utility spells so he covers the 'wizard' role pretty well, but his main focus is incinerating enemies.
Randall McNally |
Submitting Randall McNally, Human Bard (Sea-Singer Archetype) for consideration. A young man who ran away from home at the age of thirteen and joined a ship's crew as a cabin boy and worked his way up from there to become Bosun on his last ship, until an incident with the ship owner's daughter got him cashiered and he found himself in the Formidably Maid's tapproom drowning his sorrows.
Cardan the Carpenter |
I created this wood elementalist/shipwright carpenter for the wormwood recruitment thread. I made him for s&s and would really like to play him.
He is a carpenter wizard with a naval pedigree. He is not exactly a pirate. He is an aloof expert who scoffs at the riffraff. But he is certainly no angel, and neither is his familiar, who is a quintessential pirate.

Here is what we've got thus far:
Sylvestra Striana, Half-elf Witch, CN
Kenji Jehu, Human Sorcerer, N
Miraji Haelmar, Human Druid, N
Randall McNally, Human Bard, CN
Istvan Masterson, Human Sorcerer, CN
Cardan the Carpenter, Human Wizard, LN
Turniphead, Human Cleric, CN
@Randall. Are you terribly set on the name?
@Istvan. Your background was in first person, will you be posting as such in game?
On a side note: It seems odd that a interest check thread got double the activity of a recruitment thread, right out of the gate. You think it's due to the restrictions I put on race/class?
Sylvestra Striana |
I think it's less to do about your restrictions and more about their options (except maybe Gunslinger, yet allowing guns themselves). Some people naturally gravitate towards games with a little more oomph to their characters, so getting that class of gamer as well as pirate fans. Nothing wrong with that at all of course, just different playstyles. I'm sure it'll pick up in a day or two anyway. Lot of recruitment threads out there right now, and not everyone wants to post in all of them.
On a side note, lots of casters in here already. Just sayin'.
Deacon Nesser |
Str Ranger here. Noting the Large number of Full casters, I submit Deacon.
He's an arcane duelist bard, who's not afraid of melee. He has a background in his profile and is a quintessential dashing swordsman (But with a Nodachi)
His campaign feat is Optimistic Gambler from Second Darkness but I hope he is still considered because the whole gambler thing is gonna be a big roleplay facet of his char.
The man can't hang on to coin.

I fully wish to see you lose the ship in a gambling bet. . . even if you aren't the captain.

Dotting for interest. In fact, I've been drooling over this adventure path since it was announced but I can't convince my friends to play in it. They don't have the love of the nautical that I do.
That being said I'm looking to play a sea reaver Ulfen barbarian who is looking to get back to his roots as a raider and pirate instead of a fisherman. I'd like to get into more detail on this but I'm currently brainstorming for another game with my buddies on Saturday and there's only so much character creation juice I can muster at once!
Allysen |
Adam here. I give you Allysen, a waifish girl who is more than willing to give anyone an object lesson on the best places to put blades of various sizes.
I can post everyday, with very few exceptions. I also tend to stalk these boards constantly, so I'll be able to keep up.
@ Chainmail: Hey there. I hope we both make it. Seems like there's a lot of RP potential between our characters. EDIT: Nevermind, I just saw where you changed that bit. :(
ThatEvilGuy |
Hastily built backstory.
Brynjolf himself has heard the stories, told as cautionary tales of the hubris and lust that can ruin a man but he never got that message. To him, reclaiming his family legacy, as both a raider and pirate lord has been something of an obsession, filling his daydreams among the fishing ships of Port Peril and his alcohol fueled nights among the doxies and docks.
Tired of living the life of a fishermen, Brynjolf decided to turn his plans into reality and make a trip to his favorite watering hole, the Formidably Maid, where, among one of the rounds of grog and rum, he met a dashing female corsair that caught his eye and "impressed" her with the tales of his ancestors and his grand ambitions before she confessed to him that she had an offer as her first mate on a ship setting sail on the morrow (lies!). Through the haze of alcohol and frantic tearing at clothes in a hastly rented room, Brynjolf was convinced he'd found his destiny and his luck had turned.
While, what little he can remember, the evening was memorable, it was after the deed when he was falling asleep that he felt the first blow to the back of his skull. Though a monstrously tough man, Brynjolf fought back but between the booze, exhaustion and multiple assailants, he never really stood a chance.
And so began Brynjolf's career as a pirate, though perhaps not in the way he had planned..
He's going to be a human Sea Reaver with the Buccaneer's Blood trait.
Most likely a mixed race dude with Ulfen blood.
Aardvark DM |
I intend to use the 'Peg Legs and Eye Patches' rules from the player's guide. Considering it follows the massive damage rules, it won't come up unless you take 50 hp or more in one hit.
Also, I'm considering giving the Leadership feat fo free at 9th level. The cohort, though, must be recruited from amongst the game's NPC's, and will be RP'd as an NPC.
Both of these are tentative, and will be further decided on in the discussion thread after the players have been chosen.

Brynjolf, Human Sea Reaver Barbarian, ??
Ciera, Human Acrobat Rogue, CG
Balsooma Hishal, Human Inquisitor of Besmara, CN
@Deacon. I'm fine with the trait from Second Darkness, as long as your other trait is from Skull & Shackles.
@Pegleg. You are missing a trait from the Skull & Shackles player's guide.
@Balsooma. Your background brings up smithing often, but you are not trained in it.
Ciera |
Ciera smiled to herself as she launched into the final part of her routine - the crowd was appreciative, standing and clapping as she balanced elegantly on her arms on the stool, with her body curved backwards over her head and her legs held motionless. The feat was easier than it looked but, as the finale of her act, always impressed.
After holding the pose for a full minute Ciera finally relaxed and let herself uncurl, bowing as the applause rose to a new height. She pushed through the rough crowd to the bar where the innkeeper shot a smarmy smile at her as he slid over tot of rum. Winking in return, she turned her back to the counter and leaned casually against it as she drained the cup in one gulp. She smiled as a young man approached and introduced himslef, waving for another tot for her. He was handsome. Older than herself and well-built with chocolate-brown eyes and a cute smile.
Despite her young age Ciera was well-used to drink, and to rough bars. She had, after-all, been performing in such places since she was five and now, ten years of experience later, she didn't really feel at home without a strong smell of stale beer, saltwater and sweat in the air. True, this was the first time she'd performed alone since leaving Brag's players. But that just meant that she'd get to keep all of her takings, rather than give the lion's share to the muscled bruiser who 'protected' her from the thugs, pimps, pickpockets, rapists and press-gangers who he claimed hid around every corner of every street. Maybe she could finally even meet a boy at last. Why yes, Ciera could look after herself!
She took another shot of rum. Hadn't she already drained it? No, it was full now so she couldn't have. She laughed out loud, at,.. something, drawing stares from a few of the patrons. She felt,... strange. Lightheaded. Unsteady. Turning to the young man next to her,.. Harlen? Had she been talking about something? That story of the press-ganged sailor? That was a funny one! She grinned and her knees seemed to buckle. She slumped against Harlen unsteadily looking up into his big eyes,.
"You're pretty" she slurred as she slumped further forwards and everything went dark.
Aardvark DM |
That being said, if you want to describe your armor as piece-meal I'm fine with it and you still retain the full functionality. I would also say that with profession Gladiator, I would probably allow you to make a single check during combat to either Diplomacy or Intimidate a single NPC.
Arknight |
Here's my fleshed out concept. I may have a bit of refining done for the background, but I think he's ready for the most part. However, I definitely would appreciate any thoughts or comments. :)

Ever since his birth on a ship sailing the Shackles in the middle of a storm, Kiernan has been told he was blessed by the Pirate Queen. His Varisian parents were merchants, offering various trade goods throughout the islands. From the time he could walk, his feet were on a deck or on various docks throughout the region.
Then came the day that he no longer considered himself blessed. At the age of ten, amid a burning and sinking merchant ship, Kiernan found himself near death, with a pirate offering him freedom in exchange for service. The Pirate had already cut down his parents, but Kiernan felt that he had to survive. Agreeing, the pirate promptly took him to market where he was sold to the highest bidder. Kiernan's fighting spirit earned him a place among his owher's gladiators.
For 7 years, Kiernan has been a fighter in some of the most unusual matches, mostly involving flooded arenas with faux ships. He learned quickly too that to succeed in the arena, he had to stand out. For Kiernan, it was adding a bright, multicolored scarf to his outfit. As was typical of his heritage though, he added small blades along one side so that it also served as a weapon should he need it.
Recently, the school where he had been kept was raided by a band of Sahaguin and Merfolk. Seeing an opportunity for freedom, Kiernan fled at his first opportunity and headed for what he hoped was the start of a new future in Port Peril. All he had to do was find a ship that would take him.

Holgur |
I submitted this character for another recruitment. He is a neutral ranger witht they skirmisher archetype. The other thread called for max gold so I was in the middle of equiping him with that in mind. If chosen for this campaign I will adjust his equipment according to average gold.
His backstory is that he has some experience as a pirate from Ilizmagorti but his ship and crew were bested by another pirate ship. They were left to die but managed to make it to Port Peril on lifeboats and the crew then split up among mutual recriminations. Holgur decided to take up with another crew before his former crew members come looking for him.
'Sunny' |
So...some sea going shenanigans! (^_^)
I offer up 'Suny' (^_^)
Aquatic Elf: Yes, basically just your 'Vanilla' Aquatic Elf as detailed in the 'Inner Sea World Guide' Page; 25 (^_^)
I am also effectively on the other side of the world of most American posters. This means that, while I can post often, the timing of my sleep/day/night cycles puts me a little bit 'out of sync' with most others. *Bows*
Now, as for class? Two levels of Barbarian Titan Mauler
Followed all her other levels in Magus Kensai
Her weapon of choice being the Elven Curved-blade.
Others thoughts and comments?
Much cheers to you and yours. (^_^)
The Lady Dizit Sama |
Could I offer up Mr Bingul LaFoom
A Gnome summoner and Navigate/mapmaker
Mr Bingul La-Foom
A Gnome summoner who fancies himself a map maker navigator. He has worked on a number of Ships and sea craft, as his Eidolon Mog is a riding swimming snake, Mr La-Foom can often be found going from ship to ship in port, working his passage.
Bingul is always talking if not to any one around him if no one is around he talks to Mog (who just nodes most of the time when
Bingul chatters away)
Bingul loves blue in fact aver bit of clothing he has is a shade of blue To match his hair, eyes and skin. He will tell you if asked that "blue is not a cold color as most think but in fact a hot one and...."
you get the idea, he loves blue.
he’s short for a Gnome, fast to move but weak to lift, he loves maps and teh making of them always looking to go to new place and draft new maps.
He’s always well-spoken and will always ask before doing something (most of the time)
Aardvark DM |
From this point forward, I will arrange them by power source just to help me in making sure the bases are covered. I will most likely take one from each, and the fourth will round out wherever I think there may need shoring up.

@Balsooma. Ahh, okay, I missed it. I had only looked at craft and wasn't thinking profession.
@Sunny. I didn't add you yet, as Aquatic Elf is not an option. The 'Spirit of the Waters' racial trait is available, though.
@Brynjolf. What alignment do you plan on having?
Aardvark DM |
I will allow any alignment except CE (and LG's may have a hard time fitting in), but if I do take an evil character it will only be one. So just know that if you are evil, you will not only be competing against the other applicants of your power source, but specifically all other evils as well.
If this changes the alignment you had previously chosen, as you envisioned the character as evil, then please let me know so I can adjust my list accordingly.
@Mathurin. What is your chosen terrain?
@Ciera. That doesn't mean you can't also do the same thing. If it is how you had built your character, then go with it.
Even if I have two characters built mechanically exact, and background almost identical, I will find another way of making the decision. Don't change what you wanted to play for fear of duplicating another. Not at the start anyways. If it's a call for replacements, then overlap might be an issue, but at the start everything is up for grabs.
Mister Plugg |
Thar's the beginning.
I did originally envision him as being evil. It's hard to picture a Viking sea reaver type that looks back at his ancestor's career as a Big Bad Pirate of the Shackles and goes "I WANT THAT!" as being anything but.
He wants the loot, the fame, the fortune and the beaches.
*shifty eyes*
Allysen |
Aardvark DM wrote:@Allysen. I knew I forgot one of my questions in the last post. As 'Cabin-boy' does she hide her gender, or did she hide it and no longer does so?I was going to go with that until I read Allysen's background - damn her!
Sorry, but on the bright side I think it could work. Allysen is going to be more combat focused with some knowledge, craft, and profession skills to round her out, not much for social stuff like Diplomacy and Intimidate. She uses passive methods of hiding her gender and anyone could figure it out if they took the time and effort. Ciera seems more built for being sneaky, and social. Looking at her build I think having a couple of two-weapon fighters (fighting style, not archetype) taking teamwork feats would be awesome.
