Flexible Enhancement (Su)
A master of the wood element, Cardan is able to bend like bamboo when stressed and snap back into place. He gains a +1 enhancement bonus to Dexterity, Constitution, or Wisdom. This bonus increases by +1 for every five Wizard levels to a maximum of +5 at 20th level. You can change this bonus to a new ability score when you preparing spells. At 20th level, this bonus applies to two of these ability scores of your choice.

Splintered Spear (Su)
+4 100' 1d6+4 7x per day
As a standard action, Cardan can create a wooden shortspear, which hurls itself as a ranged attack against one target within 100 feet (range penalties apply), using his Intelligence modifier as an attack bonus instead of Strength or Dexterity modifiers. The spear deals normal damage according to its size (d6), plus the Intelligence modifier, then breaks into countless splinters; the target takes 1 point of bleed damage each round on its turn. At 6th-level and every 6 levels thereafter, the spear gains a +1 enhancement bonus and the bleed damage increases by +1. Domain Specialization: Wood +2 spellcraft checks re: domain spells

HIS PERSONALITY:
A quiet and introspective young craftsman, Cardan has an abiding interest in woodcraft and shipping technology. He makes no effort to befriend fools. And to him most people are fools. He is not a professional ship's surgeon by choice - he only signed on to avoid walking the plank on his first voyage. It did not surprised him to find himself pressed by the next gang of dirty pirates to come along in Port Peril either. He hates his job and makes no effort at all to make his medicine pleasant for his patients. As the ship surgeon he also shares cooking duties. His cuisine is nourishing...for those with the guts to eat it.

He does appreciate the company of druids, shipwrights and other craftsmen. To them, however - his company is ponderous.

More popular by far is Silent Bob, Cardan's gregarious parrot familiar.

APPEARANCE:
Wiry and thin and fit. 5'8. Weather-beaten skin. Long, gnarly hands. Sailor`s outfit. Leather toolbelt and satchel. Quarterstaff. Somewhat sunken eyes and a hooked nose. Beautiful parrot for a pet.

CARDAN'S STORY:
Cardan is the son of an Andoran ship's captain. He grew up near the Augustana shipyards whittling wood and learning carpentry from the shipwrights. He came to the attention of an Ejukae mage named Laurentiale, who was an old ship's mate of his father. Laurentiale encouraged the boy to take an apprenticeship with him, and they travelled to the forests together studying trees, magic and other ways of wood. When the elf mage decided to journey back to his Mwangi homeland, Cardan was eager to follow and learn about the jungles. Thus began his life as a sailor on the high seas. It was not long before trouble blew in. During a violent mutiny Laurentiane was stabbed in the back and perished. Cardan was spared the plank and was forced to remain on board as the ship's surgeon. He was at last relieved to disembark to freedom in Port Peril at the end of the voyage - but not surprised a week later to be back on board yet another filthy vessel. Cardan had stopped for a drink at a tavern last night. He happened upon a damsel in distress in the alleyway outside. Thinking he could help, he didn’t notice the thugs hiding nearby, and they caught him unawares. Now here he is on the Wormwood press-ganged aboard for yet another pleasure cruise.

Cardan's Secret:
There are shipmates who figure there is more to young Cardan than meets the eye. They know that he is a skilled carpenter and a decent surgeon - despite his brutal methods. Most know him to be a magic user with some power too. What they may not know is that Cardan knows more about the business of shipping than he lets on. His father isn't just any old captain - his father is a decorated officer of the Andoran Navy and a much-loathed pirate hunter. Cardan knows a thing or two about ship-building (Engineering +8, Woodcraft +9) as well as protocols, personages and heraldry of the high seas (Nobility +8). He also knows how ships are underwritten and how accounts are kept (Appraise +11). He has studied the charts (Geography +8) and has has received an education in the natural sciences. (Nature +8).
