As the Radiant light burns into the swarms. The first swarm rushes to Vax. The swarm moves into his space and starts to bit him. The second swarm moves to the swarm Ras.

Am I up first? Just confused because you have beside Vaxis's name "Your up", then further down you say I act then Ras, and finally on the bottom of that post you say "Merri is up". Sorry for the confusion.

The shot from Miri passes through the Swarm, it injures a few.
Urran is on vacation so I will be acting for him Urran reaches into his pack and pulls his flask of oil. He throws two of them at the rats 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25. The flasks hits it targets and gets both swarms wet. Before he throws he tells Vax to back up some. As Vax does the oil lands on the Rats. Ammon hellbolt misses the rats but his the wall causing a fire on the rats. 3d6 + 10 ⇒ (5, 4, 5) + 10 = 24. The rat swarms run to the river.
As the rats leave the group is able to make it to the gate. Even with the key the gate lock is stuck.

After finding that the lock is stuck, Vax turns to the group, "I don't suppose that anyone else has any more oil? Or maybe has some locksmith's tools?"
If we use some oil to lube it up, could that lower the DC a little?

Elessa is quite congenial about the whole thing but admits that she does not have anything that will loosen the gate.

It depends on what we are actually using our strength for. If the lock unlocked, but it is stuck shut then maybe a crowbar would allow two people to try together. In that case, the person with the higher bonus would roll, and the second person would give them advantage.
However, if the strength check is for turning the key itself, then I would think that only one person could try at a time.

After Urran and Meri clean up the lock a bit, Vax takes Urran's crowbar and sets it in the lock arm.
Forgot that the crowbar itself grants advantage.

Elessa casts guidance on Ras before he tries his luck with the crowbar, allowing the Light of Lathander to rest on his shoulders.

Vax steps out, and if he does not see any foes about, he sets to picking up the fallen gate and setting it in place to at least make it look like nothing is amiss.
Then, unslinging his shield and drawing his mace once more, he sets to task.

As everyone exits the tunnel and heads around to the town, Urran collects his tools and tries to rig a quick trap on the door with twine and a spike.
Looking to have the door come crashing down again if someone approaches. So we at least know about it.

Question, some of us may have pretty high passive perceptions, would this have helped at all to mitigate the ambush round? Also, I believe that Ras specifically said he was looking for a potential ambush, would that allow him a Perception roll?

Going ahead as no baddies are between Merri and I's init.
Urran leaps between the legs of the larger humans in the front line, attempting to place himself in the midst of the kobolds using ranged attacks. He strikes out at one, failing to draw blood, but certainly drawing attention.

Blocking aside the two swipes from the cultist, Vax swings hard at the man's (assuming it's a man?) weapon shoulder!
