The group begins to disperse and search the room, though the three dwarves remain close to the door. Giovanni checks one of the northern doors, and finds it to be a strong wooden door, but unlocked and untrapped. On the northern wall above the doors hangs a massive portrait of a Chelish man with a smug look on his face holding a black rod inlaid with silver Abyssal script that curves slightly, resembling an unstrung bow. This must be Rutillo Irrica, the last patriarch of the Irrica family.

Hskoro meanwhile takes a look at the southern wall, upon which hangs a large portrait of what he can assume to be the entire extended Irrica family at the time of the fall of their house, a large assembly of Chelish nobles, with one notably wearing the armor of a Hell Knight, and another clearly the same man from the picture across room on the opposite wall holding the rod.

Everbloom, Hskoro, and Giovanni all get the strong feelings that they are being watched. In fact, they are able to pinpoint the source of their feeling: as they walk about the room, some of the figures in the family portrait turn to watch them. The painted Irricas make no other movement, but a few of them certainly seem to be following the movements of those moving about the room.

Everbloom wanders through the midst of the room. The floor is covered in brown splotches of old, dried blood, likely shed during the raid, but in places it is disturbed, as is the dust, as if other creatures had been in and out much more recently. As she comes towards the eastern end of the house and the front doors, several things happen at once.

She notices that there is soft light coming from down a hallway south of the main doors, like that from a lantern. But then she seems to pass into an area where the air draws particularly cold, raising her hackles and sending a shiver down her spine. Then something draws the attention of everyone in the room.

The portrait of Rutillo Irrica animates and scowls at the intruders, shouting, “Vegoran Thrune, your time has come!" A dark-winged, female figure appears in front of the portrait. She could almost be mistaken for an angel, except she seems stained, dirty, bruised, and scarred. Rutillo mouths a four-syllable word or phrase that is both too soft and too loud to be understood, and the winged creature raises its sword to attack, flying forward towards Everbloom at breakneck speed!

Meanwhile, Everbloom is sure she hears movement from down the lantern lit hallway, as if doors were being flung open, followed by footsteps.

You recognize the winged woman as an erinyes, a powerful devil.

Knowledge (religion) DC 13:

You are fairly certain that this manifestation of a vengeful fiend is a haunt, and is largely illusory, though still dangerous. It could be temporarily neutralized by the application of positive energy, such as channeling energy or cure light wounds, to the haunt as it manifests.

If neutralized, the haunt will return in 1 hour, unless certain conditions are met. Often it involves parties admitting their guilt in a crime they, or perhaps their family, committed.

A couple of things to note, one of which was an oversight on my part before. The windows are all boarded up, so only a little light passes into this room in, and less into the other rooms of the manor. It is considered dim light throughout the great hall. That said, I will allow a retcon of casting light, readying a torch, or anything else that you might have done as soon as you reached the door of a poorly lit house.

If any of you would have activated a light source, please indicate that now, otherwise the room will be treated as dim light.

It is indeed that time.

Mikhail moves forward behind Hskoro, drawing his silver flail as he does so. Just as he gets into position, Everbloom sees a pair of men dressed like bandits step forward to the edge of the lantern light and loose arrows at from their shortbows, which come whizzing towards her, though neither hits its mark, despite her being flat-footed from the sudden and surprising developments.

Everbloom curls up her lips into a snarl and takes a cautious step back from the bird lady. She holds out her hands, causing a vortex of leaves to spiral around her and gather in her palms. Then she thrusts her hands forward, and fires a flurry of razor sharp leaves at the bird woman.

Everbloom sends a barrage of blade-like foliage flying at the illusory outsider, who vanishes in a puff of smoke just as she draws near the kitsune

”Damnit,” says the woman who appears to perhaps be the leader of the bandits, ”They’ve overcome the false fury. The haunt won’t be back for an hour. Ah, well, we can take them anyways.”

She smiles, and begins to sing a silly, murderous little song.

“Kill that dwarf, shave his beard,

Skin the foxfolk, make it weird.

If they’ve friends we’ll kill them too,

When haunts won’t work, blades will do.”

Giovanni comes to a dead end. The upper floor is completely collapsed, preventing access to the rooms above.

As the adventurers move forward to enter the fray, the bandits step backwards and, following the orders of their leader and inspired by her comical song, lose arrows at Smiley the dwarf, but both shoot over his head.

Despite lacking a clear shot, Everbloom thrusts her arms forward, firing a flurry of pine needles past Hskoro at the blue enemy.

But her aim is way off! Her pine needles slam in to the ceiling with a rapid-fire series of 'thunks' and stick there for a moment before vanishing.

Yeah, honestly add another 15 feet to that since I'd say you'd have noticed the collapse as you got close to it, even if the character didn't notice it when you first entered the manor (it was in my opening description of the place that the upper floor was collapsed).

Neither Smiley nor Everbloom are able to hit their targets, and the bandit leader laughs. Continuing to hum a tune, she steps back, reaches into her spell component pouch, draws out some small fruit tarts and a feather, and then, waving her arms and chanting a few strange phrases, casts a spell.

This time Everbloom's attack completely wrecks the bard, sending her flying against the doors, unconscious. The battle is at an end.

In order to try to expedite the exploration phase of this, since there isn't another encounter here at the estate, allow me to provide you with an overview of the rooms that don't really have anything of interest. The map has been fully revealed.

After exploring most of the rooms, the Pathfinders make their way into a small office. This once luxurious office has been thoroughly ransacked, and vandals have defaced the walls and furniture. A dead crow, relatively fresh but burned and blackened, has been nailed to a plaque on the western wall. A gilded portrait frame over the desk has been covered with paint and blood, obscuring the image underneath.

Knowledge (local) DC 10 (this check can be made untrained):

You identify the burnt bird as the territorial mark of the Scorchfeathers goblin tribe.

As you step into the room, some very strange happens. You hear a muffled voice come from the blood-covered painting, which says, "I am Asmodea Irrica, daughter of Rutillo and heir to the House of Irrica."

Perception DC 12:

The painting seems to sit slightly askew from the wall, as though there is something behind it.

Detect Magic and Spellcraft DC 20:

The talking portrait is an animated portrait, a detailed painting of a particular intelligent creature, animated to show movement or action within the painted scene. The image reacts when questioned, with the creature turning to face the viewer and responding appropriately.

The image is a magical effect with no actual intelligence, but is programmed with up to ten 25-word verbal responses and can respond to questions if these responses seem appropriate.

For example, if one of the programmed responses is the name of the person shown in the portrait, it can answer questions such as “who are you?” and “what is your name?” If the item crafter is familiar with or has the cooperation of the creature depicted in the painting, the illusory image has the voice and mannerisms of that creature.

You suspect that the magical portrait might not be able to hear you due to it being painted over.
