Rhen Jaedra |

Kill me if you want, I've told you everything I know.
Rhen snorts at the merc's statement. "Everything you know? You can't spend time around a mercenary company and camp without learning more than that." He then digs down into some more detailed questions...
"How many mercenaries, cultists, kobolds are there?
Who leads them?
What do you know about the leaders?
Sketch out the camp's layout and indicate guard posts.
Do you have any magical support - other than the dragon?"

I was hired out of a small town and worked with a group that numbers twenty-ish. Cultist and Kobolds are in a separate part of camp. The cultist come and deliver our coin. I don't know who leads them, nor anything about them.
He draws a crude map that shows a few tents and says that is where they are confined. The only ones lesser on the food chain are the kobolds.
I think we are working for the dragon.

Darius Sindareon |

Darius snorts at the thought of working for a dragon.
"A particularly deluded bunch, isn't it?" Darius says as he shakes his head in disgust.
"We should hurry to the temple. Perhaps we can spare a few more lives this night."
"But don't think we're done with you, curr. We'll speak once this night is over."
Darius then asks Nighthill about requisitioning some arrows for his shortbow.

Your full up on ammo Darius.
The temple is a large building, made of fieldstone with a peaked slate roof, and square in shape. It is taller than most other buildings in town.
Raiders have surrounded the sanctuary. Singe marks on the temple have proven that the building thus far as been resistant to fire. Now they have deployed a makeshift battering ram. It's only a matter of time, possibly minutes, before the temple's main doors crumple under the assault, leaving the villagers inside helpless.

Darius Sindareon |

Darius nods to the others, and aims his bow at one of the men with the battering ram.
"On the count of three, gentleman, unleash hell," he whispers to the others. "One. Two. Three."

Gilandiril Celebrithil |

Do we have a surprise round or did they spot us during our approach?
When Darius reaches the end of his countdown, Gilandiril utters the now familiar incantation and unleashes a frozen ray of moonlight at one of the purple-clad humans.
"Templa en ringw’isilme!"
Ray of Frost: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 2 and the target's speed is reduced by 10 feet until the start of my next turn.
I'm not sure what a Dragonclaw is, but it doesn't sound good...

Gilandiril Celebrithil |

Earlier, before they left for the temple
As he rejoined his companions to head to the temple, Gilandiril said, "My friends, I must apologize for my sudden outburst. I assure you I am not normally given to fits of temper."
He exhaled heavily, and then added, "It has been a long night and I suppose I let my exhaustion get the better of me. I wanted to thank you all for your calming words."
He clasped hands with each of them in turn, saying, "May the Daughter of the Night Skies see us all safely through this trial."
As they made their way to the temple, Gilandiril fell in step beside Adrick, saying in Dwarvish, "Friend dwarf, back there in the cell, you said the All-Father showed you the prisoner's fate? Sehanine reveals such things to me, as well, but it is always through dreams during my daily reverie, never while I am awake."

Darius Sindareon |

GM, if someone was particularly well armored or looked in charge I would have attacked them.
"Focus on the humans. Fear might be enough to drive away the kobolds if we take out their masters."

Sorry, the Kobolds were keeping a lookout so there is no Surprise round.
Initiative Order
Gil, Kobolds, Zat, Ragar, Adrick, Darius, Cultist, Rhen, Dragonclaw
Gil's ray of moonlight hits the ground at the feet of the Dragonclaw (a human warrior with a stylized mask, perhaps one of the higher ranking one's) harmlessly.
Two Kobolds respond to Gil's attack with slingstones, while the other four split on the more heavily armored in your group: Ragar and Adrick.
Gil: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 221d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 HIT
Gil: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 221d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 HIT
Ragar: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 181d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 HIT
Ragar: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 51d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 231d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 HIT
Adrick: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 121d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 MISS
Adrick: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 101d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 121d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 MISS
Zat shoots an arrow through the gut of a cultist.
Ragar (I believe you are in death saves now, I can count your attack roll as a success if you wish)
Adrick responds to the assault on him by the kobolds by crushing one of their heads with his warhammer.
Darius pierces through the mask's eyehole of the Dragonclaw, dropping him immediately.
Cultist stops with the battering ram, draws a scimitar and immediately closes in on Darius, in response to his senior going down.
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 91d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 MISS
Rhen's shot goes wide.
Aww, I'm sad I didn't even get to use the Dragonclaw
Cultist 1 (Dead), Dragonclaw (Dead), Kobold 1 (Dead)

Darius Sindareon |

Darius dodges the slash of the scimitar, drew his rapier and responded with a deadly accurate riposte.
Rapier vs. Cultist: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

Gilandiril Celebrithil |

Round 2
His vision swimming from two sling stones to the head, Gilandiril responds in kind, attempting to freeze one of the scaly creatures before it can fire another shot.
Ray of Frost: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Inspiration: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 7 and the target's speed is reduced by 10 feet until the start of my next turn.
Whatever a Dragonclaw is, I'm relieved you didn't get a chance to use it, DaWay... Well done, Darius!

Gil's aim is true and drops the kobold.
Seeing his ally go down one kobold responds to Gil's ray of frost with another sling stone.
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 221d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 HIT
Another kobold responds to Zat's attack
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 231d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 HIT
The last attacks Adrick
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 181d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 HIT
Zat closes in on the Kobolds that were taking out the big man Ragar but misses his target due to the deft nature of his enemy.
Ragar in the previous round killed an enemy in a very bloody manner, takes the time to back away.
Adrick ...
Darius riposte is true and strikes severely.
Cultist...
Rhen ....
Cultist 1 (Dead) (7 damage), Dragonclaw (Dead), Kobold 1,2,3 (Dead)
Man, these kobolds are deadly this round.

Rhen Jaedra |

Rhen will take a shot at whatever is still standing - cultist or kobold - since this combat has made it abundantly clear that they're both dangerous opponents.

A solid hit, but the kobold is still up.

Cultist 1 (Dead) (7 damage), Dragonclaw (Dead), Kobold 1,2,3 (Dead) (3 damage)

Darius Sindareon |

Darius growls in pain from the heavy slash of the scimitar that opened a wide gash along his forearm. The elf grits his teeth, counters another slash, and then ripostes a solid, stinging strike in the man's abdomen.
Rapier vs. Cultist: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Damage, critical hit: 2d8 + 3 ⇒ (3, 2) + 3 = 8
"Apologies, Ragar. I am a bit rusty at daring-do. Too much time in the library, I suspect."

and Darius ends the cultists life.
Rhen...
2 kobolds left, 1 of which is injured.

Rhen Jaedra |

Rhen shakes his head, disappointed that his own archery has not been very good in this fight, leaving their enemies too many opportunities to fight back. He takes aim at the injured kobold and lets his arrow fly.
long bow: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

Gilandiril Celebrithil |

Looks like I picked a good time to roll a natural 20...
Round 4
Shaking his head to clear it and wiping the blood from his nose, Gilandiril hauls himself to his feet, using his staff for support.
With bloody fingertips, he traces a sigil in the air, points at the remaining kobolds, and rasps, "Templa en ringw’isilme!"
Ray of Frost: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 7 and the target's speed is reduced by 10 feet until the start of my next turn.
And then I whiff the attack roll!

Zatqualmie Burrwaddle |

Zatqualmie rushes over to stick a finger in one of the holes in Adrick

Ragar "Two-Fisted" Coughlin |

Ragar moves as fast as he can in his condition inside the temple. He limps forward leaking blood all over the floor with a staggered gait.
The Governor sent us. We have stopped the threat and require healing immediately!
He searches for the nearest cleric.
Please help us! We have a man on death's door, and I am not far behind him.

Darius Sindareon |

Darius packs away his rapier and shortbow. His arm is bleeding badly, and he feels a bit dizzy.
"I'm not doing particularly well, myself. Is there a healer in the temple? We need to get everyone back to the fortress. This temple is no longer safe. Reinforcements will most likely be sent later once this rabble fails to report back."
Darius childishly kicks one of the fallen men.

Gilandiril Celebrithil |

His head throbbing, blood still trickling from his nostrils, Gilandiril moves to the temple entrance and begins to drag the fallen dwarf across the threshold.
"Help me get Adrick inside!" he says to whoever is close enough to assist him.
Once everyone is safely inside the temple, Gilandiril enlists help in closing and barring the temple doors, in case more cultists arrive.

Rhen Jaedra |

Rhen moves forward to help Gil lug the wounded dwarf to the door of the temple.
"Anybody here good at convincing frightened priests that we don't mean any harm and need his help? I could yell at him, but that's about the extent of my people skills."

Darius Sindareon |

Darius kicks at the locked door.
"Oh, come bloody on! Do you think we'd ambush a troop of marauders because it's funny?! We're trying to help you! This place isn't safe, and we're really beat up here."
