So I've just ordered the Ultimate Intrigue deck so I can play as the Red Rave/Aric in the organized play of the cardgame. I'm thinking of going through season of the Goblins, and re-flavoring the Red Raven as Scribbleface, the dark guardian of his clan who protects licktoad goblins through the forbidden arts . . . of READING! And of course his civilian identity is Not-Scribbleface, so he can, y'know, interact with other goblins when he needs too.
(none of this is mechanical, BTW, just me being wacky).
Since Red Raven/Aric is from Ultimate Intrigue, I was wondering if anyone knew the best class deck to pair with him?
I'm looking for a class deck that has a fair amount of finesse weapons that don't require weapon proficiency (that way the Red Raven can make use of his Finesse=Dex:Melee power, but Aric can still strength them if he gets caught with his pants down and not in Red Raven form.) Also, I'm looking for some amount of healing, like maybe a staff of healing or something just to make sure I can get myself out of tight spots. I have a few class decks (ranger, inquisitor, alchemist, Occult 1+2, Magus). Any suggestions?

Love the theming you've done for Aric with goblins!
Of the Class Decks you have; whatever seems most fun. Especially given how flexible Aric can be.
My brief thoughts on each (without getting them out and reading them all in depth again) are below. I've bolded the ones that I think are worth a particularly close look.
I don't own it, but the original 7 class decks are less likely to have boons as powerful as those in later sets.
Some good weapon options, probably among the most finesse-based decks of the lot. I don't remember it having particularly impressive items, however, but this seems a pretty close fit to Aric/Red Raven.
Some interesting items for Aric especially, but the deck is very finely tuned to the associated character's abilities to ignore/get around banishment effects. Probably got some very powerful individual cards, but it will be frustrating to handle too much of.
A lot of examination effects, good for Aric. Few weapon choices and very spell heavy, though. The Sign blessings may work out really well for Aric, given he can put them aside in his stash until he can get a glut of them all at once.
A lot of... actually a lot of everything. Has that Sign potential too, so this may be a better option than OA1 unless there's some specific ally or item that you don't get here.
Again, quite tuned for Maguses, and may not work so well for the magic-less Aric.

When you're playing him as scribble face in a goblin AP, you might as well get Goblins Fight and use that. It has plenty finesse weapons (not sure about weapon proficiency though) and a healing potion you can get back after every scenario once you hit AD3.
In general, playing the season of the goblins without the goblin decks (either shuffled into the box or used as character deck) is only half the fun.

I am 99% confident you are only allowed to use Class Decks, not Character Decks, with Ultimate Add-On characters. Otherwise I'd probably just recommend the Pathfinder Tales deck most of the time...
EDIT:
If your character is from an Ultimate Add-On Deck, you may add the cards from any 1 Class Deck.

Yewstance |

No, you can add an add-on deck to either a class or a character deck.
And to answer the discussion question, I would simply go for the theme of one of the Goblin decks. It's more fun that way.
Yeah, I rescind my earlier statement. More careful reading of a later section clarified that "Character Deck" == "Class Deck" for ALL purposes (I was mixing it up with a different discussion at an earlier date, about character substitution), in which case I'd also be in favor of using Goblins Fight... if you have that available to you.

Love the theming you've done for Aric with goblins.
Thanks! I thought it was fun!
To the others:
I agree that one of the Goblin decks would probably be most theamatic, but I also don’t want to spend $40 on a one-off ‘Joke’ deck that I may only play once. No one in my area really plays the card game (I’m trying to start it up, but it is hard going) and I plan on doing this we be Goblins online. $20 for a one-off joke? Sure, but $40 seems a bit steep. That’s why I was looking for a solution in the decks I already have (most of which were gifts given to me by my friends from their free PaizoCon gift bag, because they don’t play the card game.)

Then your friends are silly and you need new friends. :-P
I agree with the above that the Inquisitor deck is probably your #1 of those you listed above. Definitely looking forward to seeing how your Goblin Vigilante ends up working for you :)

Oddly enough, Goblin Decks may indeed be your best call for Finesse weapons, as Dogslicers don't require proficiency. (IIRC!)
However, to be honest and from the cards I'm familiar - you're pretty much screwed with Finesse weapons is you don't have WP. Ultimate Intrigue seems to be the only deck where any of those are actually present in any significant number.
So my recommendation would be to accept that Aric doesn't synergize with Red Raven's deck, that his combat's *always* going to suck, and to focus on the one thing the designers seem to have been betting on compensating this glaring discrepancy - Examines. And for that purpose, I can't recommend enough the Pathfinder Tales deck! Yes, it'll be an additional expense for you, but it is NOT a joke deck, and it's choke-full with great Examine allies and items! It also has a good splash of Evade to get your Aric out of tight spots, AND it doesn't hurt that it has a bunch of awesome Finesse weapons for RR!

I’ve found a few weapons that don’t require weapon prof. Like the whip doesn’t increase the check, just lets you reroll if you have wp. Sword cane, sickle, war razor, sai, all don’t increase the check by 4 without wp
And you are right, dogslicers don’r Require wp, but also fall apart, and without healing. . . Eh?

I agree that $40 is too much for that if you have no intention in using the deck again afterwards. However, you can easily get Goblins Fight for $10 on amazon.com, so it's an option if you change your mind; there is no need to get Goblin's Burn as well.

Thanks for the heads up. I know someone with amazon prime so shipping should even be free.

Rumors abound that the mad Goblin known as Scribbleface has not run away as most goblins thought, but instead silently lurks around the Licktoad camp, protecting it from the shadows with his forbidden arts. . . OF READING!
Meanwhile new Goblin has joined Licktoad tribe. No, what you mean new, he been here all along. What you mean he look like Scribbleface? He clearly have no scribble on face and hate reading. He clearly not Scribbleface who washed off scribbles and now trying to pass himself off as new/not new Goblin, using his social stuff to steer tribe in right direction while protecting them from outside threats as alter ego Scribbleface. Where you get such crazy idea? You stupid like longshanks

One thing that I was wondering after a short discussion with someone who was considering joining the local Adventure Card Guild group.
The Guild Guide lists the Ultimate decks among "Other Decks That Count As Class Decks". Would they even count for the "If your character is from an Ultimate Add-On Deck, you may add the cards from any 1 Class Deck." instruction that essentially started this thread? The previous instruction "If your character is not from an Ultimate Add-On Deck, you may add the cards from any 1 Ultimate Add-On Deck." suggests that it doesn't, so this instruction might really mean "any 1 non-Ultimate Class Deck" and the other four Ultimate decks would not be valid answers to VampByDay's original question..

For what it's worth, the Aric/RR player in my newest OP group settled on the Pathfinder Tales deck as the best pairing with Ultimate Intrigue. YMMV, of course.

Yewstance |

Yeah, Pathfinder Tales is going to be the best for Aric/RR 90% of the time, unless you want to build around very specific boons from other sets. Perhaps like Hell's Vengeance 2 for a Season of the Righteous campaign or the like.
Pathfinder Tales is greatly ally-oriented, like Aric. The allies like to be used together, which the "Kit" and the "Bonus draw 3" at the start of the game excels at allowing you to do. There's a decent supply of examination cards to further support Aric/RR, and it's chock full of weapons, several of which support your Dexterity and/or Charisma/Diplomacy checks.
Furthermore, Pathfinder Tales is just generally one of the best non-Ultimate class decks in general, in terms of the boon quality outside of Armors (and debateably the Items).

Linxia Benzekri |

I'm a little late but I'm pairing Aric with the Villain (hell's vengeance 1+2) decks. They have some good finesse weapons and add a different flavor as it's a lot of "dark" themed cards.
Just note that you can only combine an Ultimate Deck with any one character/class deck. So you'd need to pick HV1 or HV2, not both.
Also, I'm not a villain. Just misunderstood, perhaps.

The "Other Decks That Count As Class Decks" list applies only to the Class Deck requirement in the "What You Need To Bring" section.
Version 5.1 of the Guide clarifies this by being explicit in the one other place you might think to apply it:
• If your character is not from an Ultimate Add-On Deck, you may add the cards from any 1 Ultimate Add-On Deck.
• If your character is from an Ultimate Add-On Deck, you may add the cards from any 1 Class Deck or Character Deck (but not a Character Add-On Deck, another Ultimate Add-On Deck, or any other type of deck).

Is version 5.1 available anywhere online? The current version for the PDF on this site is still 5.0.
Thanks!

Thanks for the info guys, but I decided to go with Goblins fight as I'm playing him in season of the Goblins, so it just made sense. There are some good cards in there. Not the best, but there is the dogslicer which is a finesse weapon that doesn't require weapon proficiency so it works well. Plus lockpicks (RR doesn't have Disable) and a few decent allies.
Come follow the Play By Post as I play Red RavenScribbleface as a vigilante!
