Vital Strike

Rules Questions

I couldn't find Vital Strike being a standard action. So my question is since its just an attack:

1) Could I use it if I had an AOO?
2) Could I use it anytime I am allowed a single attack roll?

When you use the attack action, you can make one attack at your highest base attack bonus that deals additional damage. Roll the weapon’s damage dice for the attack twice and add the results together before adding bonuses from Strength, weapon abilities (such as flaming), precision-based damage, and other damage bonuses. These extra weapon damage dice are not multiplied on a critical hit, but are added to the total.

The "Attack Action" is reference to the standard action of making an attack. An Attack of Opportunity is not an "Attack Action", nor are most granted bonus attacks. There is specific errata about this.

Can Vital Strike be used with Spring Attack? Can Vital Strike be used on a charge?

No. Vital Strike can only be used as part of an attack action, which is a specific kind of standard action. Spring Attack is a special kind of full-round action that includes the ability to make one melee attack, not one attack action. Charging uses similar language and can also not be used in combination with Vital Strike.

1. No.

2. No.

As others have mentioned, Vital Strike requires the standard attack action, and without weapon tricks or divine fighting styles generally cannot be applied to anything else.

A. Weapon Trick allows Vital Strike to be applied to the second attack in a series of successful Cleave attacks.
B. Gorum's divine fighting style allows Vital Strike to be applied to the attack at the end of a charge when using a greatsword.

By RAW, no.
however, it is not game breaking to allow it any time you make a single attack on your turn, so it works with charge, Spring Attack/Fly-by Attack, etc.

Grand Lodge

Divine Fighting Technique - Greatsword Battler (Gorum) grants vital strike at the end of a charge and on a Aoo after a vitalstrike.

Ahh thank you all for some helpful tips! While still on the topic of vital strike I had one last question, if my base attack is 8D6 what would it be with Strong Jaw and Vital Strike applied? Would it be 32D6? And with Improved Vital Strike would it be 48D6?

I don't know, 8D6 up to sizes is what? 8D10?

Vital Strike let's you roll twice that.

16D10?

Strong jaw increases the weapon dice by two steps:

8d6 -> 12d6 -> 16d6

(Note that this is an increase of four steps on the table here.)

Vital Strike would add another 16d6 for a total of 32d6, and so on.

This came up in our session, can you use Vital Strike with Flyby Attack. I can see it both ways. Flyby could be viewed as a special attack, or it just gives you another standard that can be used as an attack action, and it's fine to be used with Flyby.

When flying, the creature can take a move action and another standard action at any point during the move. The creature cannot take a second move action during a round when it makes a flyby attack.

Flyby Attack allows the use of a standard action. The Attack action is a standard action and Vital Strike works off of the Attack action.

Yes, you can flyby a vital strike.

It works with flyby attack because flyby attack lets you use any standard action - one of which is the attack action.

Yep.
