So has Szuriel discovered weapons of mass destruction yet?

General Discussion

Since, along with gods, outsiders like daemons still exist in the Starfinder verse, have they started dumping the swords and arrows for guns and nukes?

One of the Daemonic Harbingers in the Pathfinder Campaign Setting has a musket for a favored weapon, so presumably this would happen sooner rather than later. I would also expect other powerful Outsiders to get similar weapons if they could.

In the AA, there's an Inevitable with a sword made of nannites, an angel with a plasma rifle, and a devil that can turn itself into a starship (complete with laser guns). There's also a planet in the CRB (secretly) ruled by hell that has all the normal sci-fi weapons/technology. There isn't much to go on, yet, but based on what we have I would expect demon armies to be unleashing all the same hell mere mortals do.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

If your Starfinder demons don't look like hideous rejects from the Doom computer game series, you aren't trying hard enough. ;-)

More seriously, it's pretty easy to swap in some future tech of equivalent tier on a set of Pathfinder stats, and call it done, given the conversion rules in the core book and the monster gen rules from Alien Archive. Even though the whole six attacks a round thing isn't in the spirit of Starfinder, I could easily see justification in giving something powerful like a Marilith the equivalent of the Soldier's Onslaught ability (maybe with a racial/inherent reduction of penalty by 1 or 2) to make it an extreme threat.

I'm going to go out on six limbs and guess that a Marilith will get a special ability that lets it ignore the normal Starfinder rule against getting more than 2 attacks per round.

Since a lot of outsiders already have a good chunk of energy resistances, energy weapons like lasers or cryo guns don't make much sense. Plus, one could say that their weapons are formed with the rest of their bodies when they arrive in a place, so what looks like 6 +whatever swords in pathfinder could be ultraserated or molecular rift swords in Starfinder.

Doom (especially the recent version) a good example in both ways. Sure, there's the mancubus or cyberdemon with their modern (ish) stuff, but there's also the imp with just it's natural abilities to jump around and throw fireballs.

A Marilith would probably have the same amount of attacks as normal, but listed in its multiattack. Most higher CR creatures have more than 3 attacks listed in there statblock, anyway.

I really didn't look too hard at the high CR alien archive critters -- do they already have more than 3 attacks? It's a surprising choice if so, given the design philosophy around SF compared to PF.

This creature can attack 6 times in one round.

To be fair, though, they're monsters. They don't necessarily have to follow the same rules as PCs and most NPCs do.

Cool, thanks! Didn't realize that StarfinderSRD had added the AA stuff already, either.

Huh. I wonder if Heaven has anti-nuke defences yet? The celestial equivalent of the Star Wars program maybe?

Since these are weapons that even PCs regularly have access to, I feel like the answer should always be "yes."

I don't know in what fashion, since I doubt it mattered enough for them to include any explanation for.

I don't see why not. I mean, while the game mechanics often didn't delve into it, the lore for planar activities has always included powers and forces on a scale beyond that of individual guys on foot. Its just that outer planar WMDs and super weapons were handled as plot devices.

Note that this goes beyond just literal analogies to stuff like SDI. Some of the defenses against attempted super weapon attack on a given outer plane could easily include things like "this attack is wide scale enough to be unsubtle and easily divined beforehand", "the local planar geometry reconfigures to minimize the effects contrary to local laws of reality", or even "a lesser deity or greater outsider swings in, and uses Wish-level reality warping to erase the damage".

It's called The Force.
