GenCon 2017

I looked through the news and blogs and could not find anything. Do we know when we (GM Volunteers for GenCon) will find out what our assigned schedules will be? This is my first year volunteering as GM and I want to make sure I don't miss anything.

Thanks!

My first year too! I'm wondering as well. Hopefully it will be before the events open up for registration in May so I don't book spots that I'm suppose to be GMing.

No one has heard anything about GMing Schedules for GenCon, they haven't even finished asking the volunteers that originally signed up. They are working on Paizo con right now, from what I understand.

You'll get an email -- most likely after Paizocon is over -- I wouldn't look for anything until then.

Ahh.. First Year Jitters...

I was feeling the same thing last year when I volunteer for the first time.

Trust and patience are your friends.

Information will come out before event registration, which is about 4 weeks away.

Trust the great people they have in place to make the 2017 GenCon crew the best so far.

Yup. Expect your emailed schedule roughly 4-6 hours before event registration opens. If you don't have it 23 seconds before, then it's time to email the coordinators in a panic.

I really hate GMing at GenCon. All the last minute planning makes it stressful. They really have improved the process over the years, but given the scope of what they're dealing with, it's really unavoidable that things will be tough to coordinate and lead to lots of last minute stress.

Personally, I'm waiting to volunteer at all until after I see what my friends and I sign up to play this year. I'm assuming Paizo will have the usual panic over the summer when a couple of GMs cancel on them, and then I can step up to take a few sessions. I doubt if I'll end up GMing more than 2 or 3 sessions, but that's all I'd want anyway.

I was actually talking about being asked to GM at all. They are very behind in sending out the second wave of invites from what I understand.

It's not really jitters as much as panic over last minute trip planning and how expensive it is.

Really? I thought the cattle call went out a while ago...

I can't speak to that question specifically but as Fromper pointed out, they do tend to need GMs all the way to the beginning of the convention.

I think it would be safe to assume you have been accepted and plan accordingly. I assume you already have a badge. If you GM enough to get a free badge, you will get a full refund for the one you bought. If you have a room through the housing portal, you will not lose the room when your badge gets converted over. You will not be able to see the room anymore on the GenCon portal but it is there.

But I do understand wanting a confirmation. I known exactly how you are feeling.

It did but they have yet to send out the second batch of confirmations. Which is disconcerting to say the least.

I'm sure but I would still like a confirmation first.

That is not the timeline for the past two years. The GM schedules have been sent out weeks before open registration. I expect the schedules will be released at least a couple of weeks in advance again this year. We still have a month until registration opens.

Yeah, I'd trust Bob on this. He's basically the GenCon "Wizard of OZ" wizard. Just checking my emails from last year... I got my 2016 GenCon Schedule on 5/13/16. So like, 3 months in advance. Don't know if that was true for non-HQ volunteers, but it is when I got mine.

Silver Crusade 4/5

Obviously, I was exaggerating just a little.

Still, mid-May isn't 3 months in advance. Event registration goes online at the end of May, so the schedules last year only went out a week or two before we all had to decide what we were doing during sessions that we weren't GMing. For those of us who aren't doing tier 1 and spending the whole time in the Sagamore, that's important.

As long as they go out a week or two in advance again this year, everyone will be fine. But it sounds like at least one volunteer hasn't heard back about their initial application yet. As I said, when dealing with such large scope of people, it's tough. But Paizo has gotten better since the first time I volunteered for them at Gen Con, 5 years ago, compared to last year.

I do apologize for the delay and causing people jitters.

We had a major issue that affected all of our volunteers, not just the conventions but the venture officers as well. That issue has been dealt with and I'm spending all this week getting notices out to PaizoCon & Gen Con vols about their info, then tackling the backlog of VO appointments. I've got a projected deadline of Friday, though it depends on how fast things pull together.

The issue that arose has been resolved so that it doesn't cause problems in 2018 and beyond.

Again, thank you for your patience!!

Thanks Tonya for the clarification. I know people were interested in getting additional information. Looking forward to playing at PaizoCon and volunteering at GenCon. As always, let me know if you need me to switch from HQ to Gming at Gencon (if we end up having a shortage this year).

Yah, I one with jitters and lots of questions .....

Are we going to be asked if we would prefer to GM Starfinder or Pathfinder?

What is the hardcover book/or similar item that's going to be a Tier 3+ perk?

What scenarios are going to be offered?

Are there separate Specials for Pathfinder and Starfinder on the same night?

Will we get to see Tonya play her new PC?

Will Bob grow hair?

OK, at least the first few are serious questions/jitters. Adding to the my jitters is that even registration is on a holiday weekend when I am traditionally away from an internet connection and watching the Indy 500. Who picked Memorial Day weekend for even registration?

I doubt if either of them will have the time for that at Gen Con.

Way, way, too rich for my pocket book. How about a charity raffle?

3 years ago I got John to play Bonekeep with me at GenCon.

Although I'm not sure he's had time to play any games since.

That seems forever ago now :(

I believe the last time John had time to play anything was a spirited game of "rock, paper, scissors" about 9 months ago to determine who got the last doughnut.

I remember a table of True Dragons run by Thursty at GenCon where both John and Tonya were players.

I believe he traded out that ability for bonus to his PFS Leadership ability.

Nope. They seem a little swamped. I've decided to just wait it out.
