Ok I'll keep the idea in my top 4 :)
Still need to be looking on my ideas for Eldritch scoundrel, mindblade and puppetmaster.

Sczarni

I like this idea and if there's still time/room, would love to make a LN Catfolk rogue. Just normal catfolk though, and probably thug/cat burglar as archtypes.

They would work as a claims office sorta, taking complaints about missing property and able to act on those claims to offer an anti-theft-theft service.

I had been going back and forth with some concepts, but I plan to have a complete submission here this Saturday :)

Skimming the history it seems the Drow have caused a lot of trouble over the years. Are they reviled in Kotelian?

Assuming they are, I quite like the dissonance of a Drow Paladin, probably male. Worshiping Sithana of course, wielding an elven curved blade and light shield. Add a dash of Anomander Rake and Elric and I think that would be an interesting combo. Of course class-wise those two are magus, but both are doomed heroes which is a trope I enjoy.

@Crayfish Hora - All characters would be starting out in the Army as a squad, about to finish up their mandatory hitch in a month or so. What the group does after that is up to the group. At various points in their careers, they would have done everything from boring guard duty to trouble shooting (as you describe).

@Fangdragon - Kotelian Drow are not despised, because they are Kotelian. Non-Kotelian Drow are looked upon with suspicion and distrust. Now, some Kotelian Drow have trouble remembering that the cursing and spitting about non-Kotelian drow doesn't apply to them, but in general, Drow are not mistreated in the city.

I'm working on a Flood Troll Druid 1. Is that monster okay to use?

Thanks! Have to admit I'm finding it hard to build a s&s drow paladin with the otherwise awesome stats from set #1, the -2 con is a killer, ending up with 10 con which seems undesirable. Archer works of course but doesn't fit the visuals I had in mind.

Of course there are other options e.g. a Rakshaasa spawn tiefling.

I did have this background for a tiefling paladin I could adapt:

Spoiler:
The tavern is almost full tonight, the sounds of music and laughter mixing with the heady aroma of ale and tobacco.
You look around, there's no where to sit apart from next to the one figure everyone is studiously ignoring. The 6'6" heavily cloaked stranger. Apart from drinking and chain smoke cigars, he's not done anything overt to draw attention but you can't help feel there's something off about him. Time and again, without realizing you find you eye drawn to him like a moth to a flame.

Perhaps you've had more to drink than you realize because you find yourself take a seat by him. For long moment nothing happens, perhaps he hasn't noticed? Suddenly with a start you notice the ruddy light of a cigar glinting like coals from the strangers eyes. Yet the rest of his face is hidden in shadows of his cloak. Were those eyes slitted? No surely not, no one had slitted eyes!

A plume of fragrant smoke envelops you and he laughs a deep gravely laugh, borne of gin and cigars, "The smoke bothering you? Ha! They say these things will kill me!"

He pauses to consider the cigar before saying, "I should be so lucky. My death will be at the hands of something much, much worse. More than likely something a little closer to home..."

A brief waft of brimstone and then it's gone. The stranger continues, "Lets just say I burnt my bridges with home and I'm persona non gratis... How did that happen you ask?" The stranger produces two shot glasses, bangs them the table and pushes one your way, "Gin. If you're buying, I'm telling."

You catch the bartender's eye and with a worried glance he hands you a full bottle, which you pour out. The stranger watches you drink, and you shudder as the bitter liquid burns your throat. He grins and downs his shot in one before pouring another.

"When I say I burnt my bridges, that wasn't technically true. They burnt the bridge while I was on it. A corporate take over, nothing personal, it's just business when somebody liquidates the former CEO's family. Something snagged me on the way down, my brothers and sisters were not so lucky. Oh don't be sorry for me, they almost certainly deserved it. I know I did, you see I was destined to follow in my father's shoes and my father is not a nice man. And before it was taken away, my father's business was not a nice business.

It's funny how you imagine you'll grow up doing one thing and end up doing something entirely different. In my case I had a epiphany, that I was going to die. It's the sort of thing that comes to you after you've been hanging by your ankles for two days and a night over a deep gorge and at first I thought it terribly unfair, then by degrees it came to me that I truly deserved it, and death was a release. Eventually something gave way, I fell and all was darkness for a time.

Later, half drowned, I was pulled out of the river by a holy man. I think he nearly killed me when I opened my eyes, for he drew back like he'd been bitten and in a blur, his sword surrounded by a luminous blue light, was digging into my throat. Yet something stayed his hand, he stared at me for a long while before sheathing that sword and half carrying, half dragging me back to his mountain hut. And there I remained for many a year, until I understood the real meaning of a single, very particular word. And that word was "Mercy'. It changed everything..."

I think I'm going to go with a pseudodragon rogue. It should be fun. :)

The Exchange

I do not know if I will have time to make submission before the deadline, since I was not previously informed about no outsiders except for those with (native) subtype.

@Burnscar - Yes, that's fine.

@Fangdragon - You'll need to pick a base race for your tiefling. Be it drow, or dwarf or kobold or whatever. It'll affect your appearance of course.

@Almonihah - Sounds good.

@Just a Mort - Again, my Apologies. Saturday will be the deadline for people to post interest. However, I'll give you until Monday if that will help, since it's my fault for not giving that information out earlier.

I am considering a Contemplative Psychic (formless adept)

Do you have any problems with this race or class?

As this is a CR 2 creature, I know that it would only start as a 1st level Psychic.

@Demon Lurking - As a GM I don't mind it, I will warn you up front that it would likely be the *only* one of it's kind in Kotelia, so you'd need to have a good background to explain how it got there. And you'll be dealing with even the mixed city folk finding you quite a bit too weird to be 'normal'. That two headed ogre at least is built like everyone else, just bigger and with an extra head, but a humanoid/insect with a giant brain... That's just weird! (Local reactions). He'd almost certainly be a recent addition to the city and have worked in the army to earn his citizenship.

Is it ok to make a character with a +1 CR template like devilbound?
I kinda like to try something like this. My idea is someone who doesn't know about the devil but along the story discover it and has to accept it's influence at some point later.

Having finally finished reading through the history I kinda want to work with a good goblin cleric, will we be certain to start with a holy symbol so we can use our channel and spells?

Yeah just saw this. I will throw something together :) I like playing in MDT's game.

The Exchange

I will recommend the trait birthmark so you don't need to worry about not having a holy symbol. Problem with arcane casters is they need a spell component pouch, which may not be available, or its a feat tax of eschew materials.

Yeah I was thinking on taking that I just wanted to hear if a holy symbol were part of our class so we could work from start.
Indded the arcane caster can have it hard if you end up playing a wizard without one the first part of the story.
Divine and phychic would perform better here.

Anything you have to have (wizard book, holy symbol) to use your class abilities, you'll have.

As to templates, yes, you can apply a +1 template. However, I would recommend against deviltouched, as it would not last long. The city elders would become aware of it, and then they'd bind the devil and remove the template. :)

Given the post-service environment of the game, is there a particular endeavor we should all be jointly involved in, or are we aimless and shiftless, the better to be drawn into the intrigue of the world you are crafting?

Liberty's Edge

Dotting. Will get something up today hopefully. Very intrigued.

Background:

Rokas Nepavyk.

Born in the poorest neighbourhood of the Kotelia from a family of grunts. His dad was a grunt, his grand dad was a grunt, his great grand dad was grunt... All the way to first arrival of the family.

Rokas was different. Event though he had the discipline, the endurence and the agility to be a regular soldier. What he didn't have was the strenght and the drive to be one. Math, engineering and the arcane was more what he was looking for in life. So, while his brothers and sisters were playing with fake swords, he was building miniatures siege weapons and walls.

One day, has he was testing one of his latest creation, he attraction the attention of Ipsum Garvezio. Ipsum was a officer in charge of some of the siege weapons of the city, he was impress by the quality of the toy version that Rokas made. So much so, that once a week, the two would meet after Ipsum work day to examin Rokas latest creations. The math and engineering understanding of Rokas were way higher then one would expect from someone of his education. So, after a while a deal was struck. Ipsum would take Rokas under his wing and bring to a school were he could learn more. This was Rokas chance to be more then a simple grunt and also get away from the teasing of his borthers and sisters.

Once at the academy, Rokas found another field of study. Alchemy! The posibilies were so vast and amazing. Combining alchemy to siege engine made even more sense to Rokas. So he spend the majority of his years at the academy studying alchemy, engineering and any other field that he felt would help him. Then came the time for the mandatory service. Rokas was happy. He volunteer to spend most of his service near the beatiful siege weapons. He spended days cleaning them, dragging anumitions and helping the crew for the maintenance. For most, this would have been a choir, but for Rokas it was a dream come truth. Finally, he was able to see such wonderful weapons up close and to study them.

I'm going with an awakened Animal, hope your cool with that. Sounds fun.

@Hylar - You'll be starting out in-service as that lets me have you all start out knowing each other, and provides a fairly heavy handed railroad track for the first small stretch of the adventure. I do have plot hooks and plans going forward, but the PCs can, as a group, shrug and say 'hell no' and go do whatever they want. Then I'll have to scramble. :)

@Rannik - I assume he's an Alchemist? Please list the classes/levels in the stat block, makes it easier on the GM. :)

@Ashe - Ok, just remember, it's rather complicated to pull off. I've done it once, and it was a major pain. :) The Awakened spell basically adds +1 CR, so you'll always be down a level (2nd level), assuming you pick a relatively normal animal. If you pick an animal with a non-fractional CR, then you'll be down 1 more than the animal's CR (CR 1 animal becomes CR 2). Also, remember, you only have 5 stats as an animal, STR, DEX, CON, WIS, CHA. INT is a random roll when you apply the awakened spell. So only use the 1st five rolls on the attribute array you choose for those 5 stats.

@mdt Re choosing a base race for the tiefling, is that different to the sub-races presented here? I had chosen the Rakshasa-spawn sub type. Admittedly that was because a s&s paladin is MAD and a race with +2 Dex, +2 Cha, –2 Wis really helps (+2 int from the "random" racial modifier didn't hurt ether).

Ignoring game-mechanics, which presumably can be re-skinned, a drow tiefling sounds good to me. What do you think?

Base Race just means what ethnic group was he born into.

By Default, Tieflings (And Aasimar) are humans with devil blood. However, they can also be Elves or Halflings or Hobgoblins or whatever. It affects what they look like (and size if they are not a medium creature). It also affects their ability to take 'scion of <race>' feats, which let them pass for that race. That's all it means.

A drow tiefling is going to have pointy ears, and otherwise, look like a regular tiefling from all the pictures on the internet. A kobold tiefling would instead look like some reptiloid demon, while a centaur tiefling would be a large quadruped (and likely have a +1CR for the large and quadruped).

I feel like rolling HP for my pseudodragon. Hopefully it won't go too badly...

HP: 2d12 + 2d8 + 8 ⇒ (2, 7) + (7, 6) + 8 = 30

That's... almost exactly average. XD We'll see what happens going forward.

He's not anywhere near finished, but looks like he should be fun. I'm thinking his ancestors are primarily various pseudodragons who were familiars or friends of those who took shelter in Kotelia over the centuries, and now consider themselves proud (if often overlooked/forgotten) members of the city-nation.

Ah cool, well a drow-tiefling it is then. I'll tidy up the build and background tonight.

@Terexaltherin - HP is wrong. You get max HP for first PC class level. So it should be (2 + 7) + 8 + 7 + 8 = 32 HP

Don't forget to list where your 4th level stat point went.

Don't forget you have 2 feats.

mdt wrote:

Sorry, I though I did. :(

To answer the question. Yes, he's a Level 3 Alchemist. Been wanting to play one since this little guy showed up

Mine soon!

Ah, I'd misunderstood what you'd meant about hit dice. I certainly won't complain about that. :D

I just haven't gotten to feats and the 4th level stat point went yet--though that will probably be to Int. I love the idea of him being incredibly clever... and possibly insufferably proud of his cleverness.

Oh, question--I'm assuming Disable Device would be rather... difficult for him to use, with his lack of opposable digits? Would he suffer the same difficulty with Use Magic Device?

Here is a quick stat block on Garm, will work on backstory today and over weekend. Quick of it is Garm was the awakened companion of a Druid Giantess that died in battle. Lost without her he took up her ancestral sword and joined the military.

Ah oops this is what happens when you have the window open and go to a lunch party and come back an finish. So Awaken is adding to the CR? Makes sense, just doesn't say anything about it. So that would mean no advanced template

Edit: Doesn't look like it is going to work well with the Spell adding +1 to CR. Though the spell does give languages, it may still work, AC is a lot lower now. It has hitdice going for it but no class levels. Back to the drawing board. Need to think on this.

I'm going to roll for racial hit dice.

HP: 4d10 ⇒ (10, 9, 9, 7) = 35

nice.

I'll be going the route of max 1st and average. Do we get average plus 1, or like on a d8 would I go 5 4 5 4? (Or just 5 5 5 5)?

@Terexaltherin - My understanding is all dragons (except Wyverns) that have intelligence have opposable thumbs in Pathfinder. Certainly every image I can find that shows enough detail to see their forepaws shows grippable forepaws.

@Ashe - Like I said, it's complicated. :) If you look at my aliases, you can find Scath Lynx. Currently he's built as a race builder one off. But in the original build, which you can find here you can see how he was built originally. Although I later had to go back and fix the Int thing.

@Hylar - d12=7/level d10=6/level, d8=5/level, d6=4/level

Not many choices for a deity with fire domain. Btw what happened to Hephaestus, he was mentioned alot in the history, but I can't see him on the deity list?

My goblin is young and still stuggling with his natural impulses when it comes to fire and one of the reasons he is send out to serve in the military is to get rid of his insticts.

mdt wrote:

All right, nice! So Terex can be a little saboteur as well as a tiny scout.

Speaking of which, I think Terexaltherin's pretty much done. I kind of made some assumptions about how pseudodragons fit in to Kotelia--let me know if I need to change anything about his background, or if anything looks off about his stats.

EDIT: I also assume that the army would issue him the tools necessary to use Disable Device, since I'm picturing his position being a sort of scout/saboteur, that could sneak around, observe enemy movements, and possibly sabotage some of their stuff in the middle of the night.

@Alluria - Yeah, I never updated that after I got the world gods done (that document is close to 10 years old!). Hephaestus got replaced with Tuel'vel'en Chordwrite and Gormen Greatforge. The goblins found a Tuel'vel'en Chordwrite artifact and began worshiping her. Given the natural goblin desire for things that go 'BOOM', she's actually a great deity for them. :) Although there is a good sized following of Greatforge Goblins as well.

@Terex - Background is fine.

ok :) guess I'll have to stick with Greatforge to have the fire domain and be able to heal my fellow squadmembers.

I've updated Kincaid's background. Build is pretty much the same. I haven't given him any gear since its all going to be random anyway. He'd want to try and get hold of an Elven curved blade (Sithana Nehandris' favored weapon) a light shield and some body armor.

I'm thinking of a rat folk investigator. Any potential issues with that in this setting?

Sczarni

Sure thing. I'm not sure how to roll dice in the forums here, because I haven't tried yet. But I can make a background real quick.

The Marvelous Mr. Pasternack, a cat, a professional, and a salesman of information. Starting his life as a poor cat of no distinct clan, he soon found out that others loved to talk. And he listened, and as he listened, he gathered more information. He didn't know what to do with it all, though, until one day, he asked a man if he would like to know something, and he stated his price for doing so.

A modest price, for a modest job. He paid his rent and ate well with his new found job. But he always needed more to keep ahead of his rent payments. So when a recruiter stopped by his hut and knocked on his door, he gladly accepted. And he lived a nonchalant life in the military, but always seems to lose his weapon in the middle of combat. So he adapted and learned to use his fist from the monk friends he made. He even showed up to their meditation times and greatly enjoyed their company.

Especially one female monk, Vanessa, but she had taken a vow of celibacy. Which was perfectly fine, and so he ventured about and tried to repay the people so nice to feed and cloth him in a snazzy uniform with information he gathered.

You roll dice by typing in {dice=Reason for roll}#DN+x{/dice}

Replace the {'s with ['s and the }'s with ]. # is the number of dice you want to roll, and N is the size of the dice. +X is any adder you want to add in and is optional.

So : {dice=MDT's Test Roll}3d6+12{/dice} would roll 3d6 and add 12. Like this...

MDT's Test Roll: 3d6 + 12 ⇒ (1, 6, 3) + 12 = 22

hitpoints: 3d8 + 6 ⇒ (1, 7, 2) + 6 = 16
