Advice on building a mind-affected / charm sorcerer

Advice

I'm getting involve in a PF game where I'm thinking of a Kitsune Sorcerer with an emphasis on charm and similar spells, and we're starting at level 5.

I'm thinking of Impossible Bloodline so I can hit constructs with mind-affecting spells, and in position to get the metamagic Threnodic Spell later so I'll be able to hit undead.

Is this a mechnically worthwhile approach, or am I better off spending my resources (bloodlines, feats, etc.) in other areas to be effective?

I've never run this character type, so if anyone has advice or experiences they'd like to share on similar characters I'd like to hear it

Impossible's not bad, but there usually aren't large numbers of constructs without other immunities (e.g. golems) around as targets. It's better if you're making your own and want to target them with heroism or something, which I did once as a blood arcanist.

Simlarly you don't want to pay extra spell levels or even to wait before you can target undead with your better spells. The undead bloodline might work better, or serpentine.

Good point.

Hm, undead seems a bit fight-y oriented aside from expanding my targets, but Serpentine seems a very good option, letting me hit a pretty wide range with Charm Persons rather than Charm Monsters.... definite food for thought!

The problem with constructs is that they aren't that common, and when they do show up it's usually golems, which tend to be flat out immune to magic.

Yea, flavor-wise I'm not quite as fond as serpent, but mechanically it seems easily the better choice for my goals.

I'd do fey at a minimum, and probably crossblooded fey+undead.

Undead seem way more common than constructs, unless you have some inside knowledge of the campaign.

Crossblooded Fey/Serpentine. For fluff, one of your parents was curse by a naga. Or some time along your career, you tried to increase your power with the use of what you believed was dragon's blood and it turned out to be snake's blood.

Enchantment Sorcerer is my personal favorite to play. I always go Fey bloodline but if you do plan on going mainly charm spells, the infernal bloodline might be for you. I also always go into the Diabolist prestige class and fall back on the devils I summon for defence, extra utility, and if the enemies are immune to my enchantments.

I'd go more Mind-affecting than charm. As a Fey-Bloodline Gnome Sorcerer, i've rarely found myself using Charm Person/Monster.

Oppressive Boredom and Demand Offering are two spells that could have hilarious repercussions. Hideous Laughter is a good staple, but the language-dependence could be a hindrance. Oppressive Boredom isn't language dependant. ;)

When you get to 8th level, there's a spell that is hilarious- Terrible Remorse. Just like oppressive boredom, except they'll literally be beating themselves up.

overwhelming grief will be your rogue's best friend.

Ok, that's awesome Arcana-wise, but doesn't Crossblooded totally kill my spells known? Like, it actually slows my progression to higher level spells since I only get 1 spell-known when I get to a new spell level. I don't think I want to give up that much for more bloodline powers.

Crossblooded's ugly that way. I wouldn't pick it, especially since it's also hitting your lower spell levels and you're not a human or something which can use the favored class bonus to pick up more spells. Considering you're also going to want defence spells, utility spells and at least one oh-shit-I-can't-charm-that attack spell, losing spells known is bad.

For an archetype I'd rather pick Seeker or Tattooed Sorcerer anyway. Seeker gives a +4 bonus to concentration and spell penetration with your bloodline spells, Tattooed gives you a familiar and +1 save DC on a school and your bloodline spells.

Hm, tattooed sorcerer especially looks quite tempting.... of course, Serpentine also gives a familiar so that'd be kinda redundant if I went that one, so I'll have to take that into consideration...

Oh, and taking race into account, I still recommend the fey bloodline and go compulsion and pick Kitsune as your race. With an Int of 20, at level 8, your enchantment (Compulsion) Spells DC for level 4th spells will be: 26. 10(Base)+5(Cha)+2(Spell Focus & Greater)+2(Kitsune Favored class Bonus)+1(Kitsune Racial Trait)+2(Fey Bloodline)+4(Spell level). Which I personally think is rather impressive for level 8 with no magic items. You can do the same thing with Charm, and if you do, I recommend taking Cunning Caster, to charm people without them knowing it.

Personally, I would skip the Spell Focus feats. It's overkill. Get some other feats. Or VMC into foresight wizard if you want a lolbroken power grab option (you are already a Fey Kitsune, so it's consistent with your character).

Oh, and pick up a few metamagic rods. A Threnodic Rod, especially. Check if your GM will let you use metamagic rods that haven't been explicitly printed - rods with the same level adjustment have the same cost, so it's a very reasonable extrapolation. Then you can get Verdant and Coaxing rods too, so you can basically hit everything other than constructs and specific creatures with immunity to mind affecting. That will make your life easier.
