Magic Items as Gifts

Advice

To start off an 18th level one-off I'll be running, the group will be sworn in as super duper peace keepers with a big ceremony (which will double as a joining of two nations, so just about anyone/thing could be there to celebrate). I want the group to be gifted a few nifty magic items as part of the fan fare. I want them to be useful, but not an item one of the PC's has likely already bought. Something like a Bag of Shadow Clouds; certainly useful/novel, but nothing they would have looked twice at while shopping otherwise.

Any suggestions?

Any idea what sort of concepts (not so much classes) the group has?

A few of them keep changing what they want to play, and I haven't been given an extensive breakdown of most characters yet, but I know one is going to be a Paladin who specializes in Sundering. Another will be an Arcane Trickster, and another will be an Arcane Archer. There will also most likely be a Spiritualist and Arcanist.

So there's no dedicated healer, though that's hardly insurmountable at level 18. Basically, everyone seems to be going for damage/utility, and the Arcanist may do some battlefield control, and I have no clue what role the Spiritualist will take.

These magic items aren't supposed to be integral to the group dynamic by any means, though; mostly just fun stuff that they probably wouldn't have wanted to spend money on in favor of more useful stuff. Another fun item I stumbled across is a Book of Marvelous Recipes.

Right, but I was asking for hints as to PC personality not group role.

Anyway maybe the trickster would like the bag and the arcanist the book?

A rod of splendor might work for someone who likes luxury or show. A ring of x-ray vision for someone inquisitive. An intelligent item for someone who doesn't have a pet (and might like one) - the link has examples but obviously you could make your own.

If you're willing to steal from 3.5's magic item compendium, a map of unseen lands might be good for anyone who's playing a tactician or explorer - probably drop the relic requirement.

I see what you meant now, and that I wasn't as clear as I should have been. It's not going to be a Wizard of Oz thing, where everyone gets a personalized gift; it's more of a "here's 3 or 4 fun gifts for the group - make sure to share" thing.

I once made a set of watches using the Belt of Battle the Magic Item Compendium in 3.5e.

It was super homebrew-y, but worked really well.

Maybe pick a themed set from a lesser-used slot, such as body and/or chest. If the items' appearances are symbolic and matched, they might be memorable and cohesive for the group. For example, "our yellow sashes" or "our blue shirts".

How about the same item to signify their position? A +5 cloak of resistance that can let you teleport to either capitol of the nations once a ___.

It's desirable to players and thematically fitting.

here to second items fitting their role/station. Things like 2 way communication mirrors, ring gates to important figure's offices, refuge tokens made by each king's personal guard, or the like. Stuff that reads "we trust you, implicitly" and allows them to do their duty better. Alternately daily use high save/widened calm emotion items could fit the bill if they're more concerned with internal than external threats. There's little better for forcing a chance to talk things out.

Sorry, I'll clarify again - these ideas are great, but just not what I was looking for. The gifts aren't meant to commemorate their station, or be really symbolic at all. They're gifts from a few random individuals or organizations during the celebration. This is a one off (characters, setting, etc. are all being made from scratch for just one night of adventuring), so I'm really not putting a whole lot of investment to the actual context, or building custom magic/intelligent items (at least for this purpose). The bulk of my attention is going toward the actual adventure and encounters. I was just looking for a couple fun magic items to gift them for "because" reasons. At level 18, there's little I could give them that they'd find genuinely useful, but I could definitely give them stuff to have fun with.

Scarab Sages

I once gave the party members each a phoenix feather from a mythic phoenix they rescued from enslavement. It was effectively a slotless magic item that 1d4 rounds after their death would consume the feather to target their body with a flamestrike that does no damage to good aligned creatures and revives them as Resurrection.

This kind of item might fit especially well in a one shot, since it keeps the players in the game even if they die once.

So...

... let's get makin'!

For fun!

* Disclaimer: I've already made these, I'm just putting them here for fun.

First, a(nother) disclaimer: these are (strongly) not likely to be exactly (i.e. "close to") what you're looking for, but they might be solid inspiration.

Necklace of Reincarnation:

Necklace of Reincarnation
Aura moderate transmutation; CL 7th
Slot neck; Price 53,000 gp; Weight 1/2 lb.

DESCRIPTION

This necklace is a bizarre, oily, and strongly scented fetish comprised of sharply scented copper coins, and a sack filled with weirdly pungent plant matter of various oils and spices that create a heavy, slick, striking odor. The bearer, naturally, has the same aroma.

Up to twice per week, it allows the bearer to use reincarnate on a corpse touched and prayed over for ten hours, and laying across the corpse (or ashes, or other tiny bits) of the person who is to be raised. If the prayer is interrupted, the effect is not wasted, but the process must begin again.

After ten hours, the corpse begins to re-grow from the matter collected from the previous one and the local environment, slowly, over the course of ten minutes. Though concentration is no longer required, if it is interrupted at any point during those ten minutes by any means (such as attacking the corpse, casting dispel on the slowly-reconstituting matter, and so on) the effect is wasted, and must be started over again.

Additionally, the target's new body seems exceptionally well-tanned (almost weirdly and unnaturally so) and smells like it was dipped in whatever it is that the necklace was, and retains that scent for one week, or until the negative levels or constitution drain is removed (whichever comes first).

Otherwise, this functions as the spell reincarnate... though some of these devices come with a few quirks...

CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

Craft Wondrous Item, reincarnate; Cost 26,500 gp.

Original.

STATISTICS

The amulet's powers are not discernible by detect magic or identify. The special powers can be identified with analyze dweomer. The powers and the abilities of the base item can be learned normally. The amulet will use its stabilize ability on a wearer, if the bearer needs it.

DESCRIPTION

This (sort of) intelligent amulet (probably something like a holy symbol of a bunch'a' gods all smushed 'round the edges or somethin', I dun'no) can be used to entirely replace your cleric's orison special ability by 8th level, and probably a bit better (since you don't have to be seen casting enhanced diplomacy).

Constant: detect magic, detect poison, enhanced diplomacy, read magic
Command Word: create water (2/day), mending (1/day), purify food and drink (3/day), stabilize (3/day)

CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

Craft Wondrous Item, all the orisons used above; Cost 6,840 gp.

Original, Repost.

Kerchief of the Shuffle Friend:

Kerchief of the Shuffle Friend
Aura moderate necromancy; CL 3rd
Slot neck; Price 7,000 gp; Weight -

DESCRIPTION

This garrish and dirty-looking rag wraps around the neck or hair, or sticks out of a pocket. When it's been worn for at least 24 hours, it grants the user a continuous command undead effect at a caster level 3 to all undead within range (30 ft.), with a DC 13 to negate for intelligent undead.

The bearer of this item must have maximum ranks in Perform (shuffle) for the special abilities to function. The bearer is considered to be anyone who touches it.

CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

Craft Wondrous Item, command undead; Cost 3,500 gp.

The Ultimate Necromancer (which is slightly a lot sillier, despite this one being silly).

I felt like I had more, but that's all I could find on such short notice. I hope they help (or at least amuse)! :D

Badges or sashes of office giving them legal power in both countries and giving them a magic, typeless +5 on Diplomacy, Bluff and Intimidate within the borders of those lands. Once per month they can Geas someone in service to the justice of the land.

THanks, everyone, for the suggestions. The Phoenix Feathers sound pretty cool.

Tacticslion: Those are very amusing, though besides maybe the necklace, a bit underpowered for 18th level characters. Thanks for the read :)

I figured, but I've been in a hurry, so copy/pasted were easier than cold-brain storming ideas. That said... maybe a weapon?

Also, c'mon: they're called "Poenix Down" - get it right! >:|

Really any magic item that is more a piece of art than just a tool. I can't discuss spell tiles here because they are homebrewed.

You could have a beautiful porcelain teapot that can cast restoration on up to three people once a day during the tea ceremony when they drink a cup of the tea.
