Four miles east of Saltmarsh, just inland of the old coast road and looking out to sea, stands the Haunted House. Until twenty years ago it had been the residence of an aged alchemist/magician of sinister reputation, and even then had been shunned by reason of its owner's mysterious occupations. Now, two decades after the sudden and unexplained disappearance of its occupant, the house has acquired an even greater air of evil and mystery with the passing years. Dilapidated and now long-abandoned, the house presents an unwholesome appearance to the eye. Those hardy souls who have on infrequent occasion sought entry to it (for rumors of a secret hoard of alchemical gold have persisted since the old man's disappearance) have all returned with naught save grim tales of decay presided over by monstrous perils. In more recent years there have been reports of fearsome hauntings--ghastly shrieks and eerie lights emanating from within the dismal place. Now not even the bravest dare so much as to approach the house, leave alone enter it. Indeed, such is the reputation of the house that the fields around it, though prime agricultural land, remain untended and rank with weeds.
Welcome! This is our Discussion tab. Our first task will be to make a party.
The basics are this, everyone will use the standard array OR roll 4d6 drop the lowest method of stat building. (If you don't have ANY stat at a 14 after rolling, you can drop your lowest and make it a 14)
Pretty much anything is fair game from the Core Rules or UA articles. I urge you all to work together when making a party so you can cover as many bases as possible. Some of you might even tie your characters together pre adventure in some way so you have a reason to be in Saltmarsh together.
The only adventure hook is the "You have traveled to Saltmarsh after hearing of a treasure" one. This adventure will begin, as most of them do in that era, in a Tavern. The Pennywhistle is a low class hovel of a Tavern, the kind that Adventurers love!

I'm currently playing a Druid in my other campaign, and I'm not really into Clerics, but aside from that, there's definitely options. I'll need to think about this...

Filios |

I have decided upon a Wood Elf Ranger hailing from the Dreadwood Forest, just north of Saltmarsh. If someone else wants to run a Wood Elf, or Druid, I would be happy to tie my background to that PC. Greywiki has some data on the area that indicates the king's troops of Keoland, the elves, and druids protect the woods jointly from evil.

Huzzah!

I'm honestly down for whatever, I'm playing a wizard in another Curse of Strahd game so I think I would prefer to not do that. But maybe what I will do is see where there is a gap if everyone else has a strong interest in something.

Woot...So excited to be included in this game!!! Now if I can just somehow sneak Duncan into the game...lol
Rolls
4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 2, 1) = 11 = 10
4d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 4, 2) = 10 = 08
4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 6, 3) = 16 = 15
4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 5, 4) = 17 = 13
4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 1, 1) = 7 = 06
4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 3, 4) = 13 = 11
Wow...that was horrific...lol...will go with the array then!!!

Carric Amastacia |

This is Filios, and I have built Carric Amastacia, a Male Wood Elf Ranger. Feel free to peruse and comment. Like I said, I am amenable to have traveled from the Dreadwood to Saltmarsh with anyone who is interested.

I will play the big dumb cleric of life. (Int 9 isn't that dumb, but I am going to play it up a little.)
I think I will go with Folk Hero background.

![]() |

Okay, so far, his name is Habbi Alaam. His father works at the Pennywhistle, so he spend a lot of his time there. He is not a preacher, he is a simple young man that tries to live his life by the words of Al'Asran (Pelor).
Are there any regular threats to Saltmarsh? Lizardman raids or something like that?

TPJ |

So far we have...
Wood Elf Ranger (Carric)
Wood Elf Fighter (Rolen)
? Cleric of Life
Human Monk or Halfling Rogue (Duncan or ?)
I'm contemplating one of the Arcane Spellcaster classes, likely a Half-Elf if I go with a Sorcerer or Warlock, High Elf if I choose a Wizard. I'm reading up on the pros/cons of each of them now.

![]() |

Here is a link to the Google Doc for Habbi. I do not have a backstory for him as of yet.
Later on I will be able to read the other's backstories and see if we can figure out how we met, and how we became an adventuring party, if not friends.

GM Niles |

It's cool that you have a google doc, but I'll need you to make a profile and alias too Aeshurra.
re threats to Saltmarsh Lizardmen is a fair guess. Goblins too.

GM Niles |

I was thinking we could start the campaign in earnest by next Wednesday at the latest.
These old Modules don't give much attention to a Plot Hook to draw in the players, so I am planning one of my own invention. However, the story will begin in the Pennywhistle Tavern, a slum of a place so..have a reason for being there ready.

GM Niles |

Wood Elf Ranger (Carric)
Wood Elf Fighter (Rolen)
Human Cleric of Life (Habbi)
Halfling Rogue (Peren)
????(Arcane Caster) TPJ
Looks like a decent group.
Only one human in the bunch....very modern group in that regards.

GM Niles |

Kinda waiting on everyone to let me know their character is finalized and ready to go.

Kirian Gess |

TPJ here. This is my High Elf Wizard. I'm still formatting the character sheet for this board and finalizing my backstory.

Kirian Gess |

Just a few small things that I will get done today, and I am ready to roll..anyone want to entwine their backstory with a permanently happy and upbeat halfling??
I'm taking the Sage background with the Researcher specialty, with the idea that Kirian is in Saltmarsh to satisfy his own dangerous curiosity about the legends around the haunted house. His university offered up the assignment (probably to get him out of their hair for a while) and he jumped at the opportunity.
Perhaps he met Peren on the way to Saltmarsh, or Peren was hired by the university to serve as a guide/companion to Kirian?
Also fair warning, that if I RP this guy correctly, he's most likely going to come off as quite the jerk to the Wood Elves, and everyone else. He's young (for an elf) and quite full of himself.

Rolen Lithlinde |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

I'm sure the Wood Elf warriors will take the jerkiness of the a High Elf wizard in stride.
Its important to get the stride right when you are trying to get perfect kick placement after all...
Bonesaw...I mean...er Rolen...is ready.

Carric Amastacia |

Right, they will probably choose to treat you like the bookish, pampered, upper-class, know-it-all that they have worked hard as soldiers to keep alive for so many years. "You need us on that wall!"

Habbi Alaam |

@Peren, Habbi is from Saltmarsh, but he speaks Halfling so maybe he has met you before when he was invited up to Good Hills to trade some of his woodcarvings.

Rolen Lithlinde |

Right, they will probably choose to treat you like the bookish, pampered, upper-class, know-it-all that they have worked hard as soldiers to keep alive for so many years. "You need us on that wall!"
We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it.
Uh oh, Filios, we might be big trouble for this group LOL

Habbi Alaam |

Habbi is an easy going guy. The kind of the guy that you can always trust to do the right thing. He enjoys being around people like Peren, and finds elves to be fascinating. Since his father works at the Pennywhistle, he is there often, and if the PCs have been here for any amount of time, he would probably have a generally helpful young man.

Kirian Gess |

Kirian is originally from Hornwood in Geoff and moved to the capital city of Gorna to study magic at the univeristy. He would have traveled through Good Hills en route to Saltmarsh, so it's possible he may have encountered Peren on the run.
If Kirian survives this adventure, I foresee he will be humbled quite a bit. Or he'll be volunteered to find all the traps in the haunted house.

Peren |

Well Peren seems to have been confused with someone else and a group of rough looking humans was looking for him. He would be more than happy to leave to visit his friend Habbi in Saltmarsh and would welcome travelling with Kirian!
How does that sound?? Will have rest of background up asap, but I think everything else should be good..

Peren |

With Peren's background as an Inheritor, he received a bequest from his uncle in the form of a set of thieve's tools. Is this OK? As far as Peren knows they are just a very good quality set of tools....that some rather bad men are trying to get back.
