If a bunch of folks came up with Oozes I'm going to be super impressed.

If a bunch of folks came up with Oozes, I'm going to be super impressed, but also super confused. Probably in a good way.

THE DEVIL YOU SAY! >:(

Honesty note: I have nothing in particular against Kender, but I understand the vitriol, and I think it's a funny joke.

Most of the submitted creatures are dragons. They are dragons & this is a contest.

The surprising creature type is outsiders. Surprising because it's second & for the amount of angels that were included.

The best writers wanted to stand out & created a humanoid, a construct, two plant creatures, & an animal respectively.

So goes my predictions :)

The best writers secretly submitted a demon, 'natch! >:P

Unfortunately I couldn't get my idea for a demon to hang together mechanically within the word count. :P

That's cause we don't need no stinkin' rules!

Now reading the monsters, still got more than 20 left to read. :) The first one I read today looked pretty good, it got a Weak Keep from me. (We use Reject, Weak Reject, Weak Keep, and Keep, so Weak Keep is the second-best category.)

By the way, I wrote a bunch of monsters for Hell's Vengeance, so anyone who has already gotten the Hellfire Compact should check out the centianima and fiend-bred animals in the bestiary. :)

Just read another monster, a very cool creature! Maybe a bit rough around the edges, but the concept is so cool it got a Weak Keep from me.

Judging by the monsters I've read so far, looks like it's going to be a very good season of HBM!

I'll write some pieces of advice / feedback here about things I've noticed while reading the monsters. Here's the first bit of advice:

Quite a few monsters have references to "you" in the description / read-aloud text or the text assumes action. That makes the description a bit less useful as a read-aloud text because you never really know where, when, and how the PCs encounter the monster. If for instance the description says "the monster attacks you", the GM will have to change the description if for any reason the monster doesn't attack the PCs. So, as a general rule, only include details that are true at least 99% of the time.

Now we need the remaining judges make such vague comments here and then we can be sure that the whole thing was actually kytons' ploy to torment us...

Alright, we have now reviewed all the entries and will start the winnowing process. We received 29 entries, and I've divided them into three categories based on our votes. Eleven monsters are now in our Keep pile, and another 10 monsters are in a Maybe pile. The Maybes will soon join the remaining nine monsters in the third category unless one or more of the judges want to "golden ticket" some of them into the Keep pile.

I actually already moved one of the monsters into the Keep pile despite mixed reviews because of its very cool, creepy flavor. It doesn't mean it'll necessarily make the top 6, but at least it got a second chance.

And then begins the toughest part of the judging process... selecting the Top 6 from the dozen or so very good entries..!

I'll be posting more statistics later this week.

Terrifying!

I'm getting flashbacks to the snark/praise threads, where nearly any comment could be about your entry! At least we're all making the Top 100 list.

There will be no snarking, though! No entry is flawless, but I think everyone did a good job.

Heh, yes you all made the Top 100 list, and actually you're all in the Top 32! ;)

Alright, Jacob, Mike, and I have chosen our Top 6. It's time to send them to Adam Daigle!

I just went to check who our finalists are: looks like we have a nice mix of both familiar faces (whom I know from RPGSS and/or have met in person) and some new talent! :)

Thanks to everyone for entering! I enjoyed reading every entry.

Looking forward to the reveal on the 25th.

One of the reasons is that we want to make commenting on the monsters as easy and convenient as possible for Adam. (And for ourselves, too!) More time, better comments.

I was smiling about the non-specific super vague posts about who's progressing and who wasn't. I was laughing until I read the bold-line.

Then I had an identifier I could connect myself too... not just one... but TWO!
(I'm new, AND I've done RPGSS!)

Now I"m not laughing. You hit my anxiety button! I curse you to the Hells...

I would love more stats about the 29 to know where my creature stands. Say CR and Size. If a detailed census is too bothersome, ranges are ok :-)

We're definitely planning to publish some stats about the 29. I personally just haven't been able to find the time for that yet. CR and size sounds reasonable, creature types too.

Grand Lodge Contributor

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Some statistics!

We have alignment and CR on our spreadsheet, so it was easy to compile the data, but size categories are not included, so it'll require a bit more digging.

Woah! Interesting! The chaotic good is an big surprise! It's funny: if the creature isn't evil, it has a 50/50 chance of being neutral or chaotic. I'm also impressed at how many low-to-mid level creatures there are. I'm guessing that has to do with special ability space, like you suggested. I'm surprised that so many people managed CR 10 or above, though - that's pretty cool!

4/5s are lawful evil.
4/5s are below CR 10.

Neat!

(Terrifying!)

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Lawful Evil the most popular alignment?! Who could have predicted that?

Grand Lodge Contributor

1 person marked this as a favorite.

It's not really surprising at all that LE was the most popular alignment, but I admit I thought there'd be a bit more variety because "enemies of Hell" and creatures "otherwise connected to Hell" were two of the four possible types of monsters contestants were allowed to create.

Still, I think we got an amazing bunch of creatures, so I'm not complaining!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I had a vague idea for a Lawful Neutral Outsider that would dwell at the borders of hell as a sort of infernal guide... I went with different idea I had because the later was already much better developed and entrenched in my mind.
