3 Neutrals? I wonder if they are creatures with animal intelligence or lower so they just default to Neutral...
Hmmm... Or maybe a psychopomp that is responsible for delivering Lawful Evil souls to Hell and making sure that only Lawful Evil souls (or those who made a contract with a devil) get there? *makes a note for future monster*

Worse. Those who correctly predicted the most popular alignment get a PuppyMonkeyBaby. Who follows them everywhere and watches them sleep.

Whew, first set of comments written. Thankfully, I don't have a word limit on my comments. :D
Hey! This is an unfair advantage! This is blatant favoritism! This is an outrage! I demand a recount! We need a peer review! Alert the press immediately!
(And he dares - dares! - add a smiley after the whole thing! The sheer insolence!)

Nope, Jacob and Mike have only seen my very brief initial comments I wrote while we were voting. I'll get to see Jacob and Mike's comments when they send them to me and I'll copy-paste them into the blog posts that I'll publish when the Top 6 is revealed.
I'll probably edit my own comments by adding "I agree with Jacob on..." or "Unlike Mike, I think...", but that's all. Nonetheless, I expect there to be many similar comments because we all have an RPGSS background and because we follow the same judging criteria.
By the way, Adam Daigle hasn't seen any of our comments; all he'll see while commenting is the monsters themselves.

Quite professional there. I expected no less but it is always good to see it confirmed :-)

Just polishing up my comments for public consumption now. Lots of fun to go back over these.
As a reminder, once the Top 6 are revealed, I'm happy to offer my feedback privately to anyone who's interested. Just shoot me a PM or an email with your monster's name and I'll try to get it to you ASAP (it could take a few days if I get a bunch of requests; if you don't hear from me within a week or so, just send me a reminder).

Don't get ahead of yourself TRB. :) You don't know if you made it yet.
That said, I'm sure everyone who hasn't made it will appreciate the effort. :)
Did my wording express that I think I am one of the happy six ? I thought I was expressing the opposite, ie that I did not make it. I am asking because I am sincerely interested in improving my level in English

I interpreted his comment to mean that he thought you were implying exactly what you thought you were implying.
That is how I read your comment too.

I likewise interpreted TRB's comment to imply he's not one of the Top 6, which is still getting ahead of himself, because he very well may be! I believe that's what Kim meant as well.
PA phrased this much better than I can. I think everyone who took part is basically working well. What surprises me though is that we are not seeing more of the 870+ other competitors from RPGSS in both this competition and the Blazing 9 thread.

It's a visibility issue.
RPGSS gets a big button link when it's running.
Product Discussion has open calls/contests so rarely that I don't check it anymore. Big thanks to Mikko for posting it in Blazing 9.
Speculation (based on my patterns): Designer wannabes hang out in the Homebrew forum. I've transitioned to the Blazing 9 thread, but previously I was unaware of it, and I'm guessing most people in Homebrew are unaware of it. If Homebrew was a place you could advertise open calls, you'd see more participants.

I don't mean this to sound like sour grapes, just that I recognize the critical importance of the ability to reliably craft on a deadline (or better, slightly ahead of the deadline). And that it's an ability I don't yet possess. That talent, like writing in general, seems to come more readily with experience, so I'm not giving up hope. :)
* This is a running thing with Ms. Muse and I. I recently had an ok critter for the last Wayfinder that didn't find its critical hook until right after the deadline. Alas, poor picklebug, I'll find you a forever home eventually.

Scott, the entries will be revealed 1/hour.
I'll also try to comment on entries that don't make the Top 6. We're very thankful that so many people entered and as a former RPGSS contestant (who tried many times with varying degrees of success before making the Top 4), I know it's very important to get feedback. :)
Adam, thanks for posting the link! :) (And for being our guest judge!)

I think as Petty Alchemy noted, visibility is a key thing. I often try to mention during Superstar that people should look in this forum -- after my first Superstar competition, I had no clue how to go forward in terms of wanting to do more freelancing (not to mention I still needed to learn a lot more). It was contests in this forum that got me started with some regular gigs and the confidence to do more. I really try to spread the gospel of the open call thread whenever I talk to someone who's interested in freelancing. It remains in my bookmarks as a site to check daily.

My suggestion is write down any potential ideas -- no matter how bare bones -- whenever you get them. I have a handful of emails I've sent myself, plus scraps of paper and an actual idea file with just simple ideas for monsters, items, locations and adventures. Before my guttersnipe, I had "flensing" down as some sort of power I wanted, as it's a cool, evocative word that worked perfectly for a monster.
That said, sometimes inspiration just doesn't strike and you've just got to sigh and move on. If the ideas come later, write them down and save them. I've had things published years after I first came up with them.

Yeah, I keep separate text files on my notebook and a Google Keep doc on my smart-ish phone with ideas for classes, races, critters, spells/psionics, etc. so I can jot down ideas when they appear. (I got tired of waking up in the morning and spending several minutes trying unsuccessfully to decipher my 2AM Voynichian scribbles.) But yeah, nothing I had seemed to fit the HBM2 theme without obvious signs of shoehorning.

I found out only because I've been following Blazing 9 this year, and watching the 3rd party forum for possible gigs. I did kind of wonder if that wasn't part of the contest though - if you are hungry enough to learn of the contest and interested enough to develop an idea to meet the deadline, you've already passed one level of elimination.

Yeah, I keep a running series of notes on my phone for drawing inspirations, stories, or just half-formed ideas. Never hurts!

Interesting point about putting down ideas. I do so, but not for PFRPG design ideas. Because these seem to need some prompting to come out. My muse works far better with input and constraints than free form ;-)
My homegroup barely responds now when I say "that would be cool if..." but when they do the idea ends up on the back of my character sheet. While my best ideas usually come from walking the dogs, the kernals almost always seem to come from the gaming table. Even if it is my thinking about last night's game while walking the boys. :)

That's very true. This year I wasn't able to spend quite so much time advertising the contest as last time around because I was really rather busy in December and January, writing a hardcover and Gallows of Madness, and developing Villain Codex II.
To be completely honest, though, if there had been, let's say, twice as many entries, it would have been much harder to find the time to evaluate them critically. I take my role as a judge seriously and was glad that I didn't have to make hasty decisions.
Anyway, only four days until the reveal!

Fifth set of comments written, one more to go!
I won't be posting teasers before I've finished writing the comments, but Jacob and Mike, feel free to post statistics and teasers since you've already finished commenting. ;-)
137ben, this is the first time we have a deal with a publisher to publish the winning entries, and because we really don't know how well the product is going to sell, it makes sense for the publisher to keep costs to the minimum. As for me personally, I don't represent RGG and I have no financial involvement in this, so I do not wish put money into something I'm doing pro bono.
I'm mainly doing this because a) it's fun and educational for everyone involved (including us judges; I always learn something new when I read other people's work), b) I like to help aspiring freelancers, and c) for the judge cred. (And d) because a lot of people were asking "When will HBM2 begin???")

Hmm. Other teasers ...
Not sure if this counts, but I always thought I was a lenient judge, so I was surprised to discover I had the most outright rejects -- twice the number of one judge.
On the other hand, I also had twice the number of keeps as that judge (I think it's been noted, we initially rule entries on a continuum of reject-weak reject-on the fence-weak keep-keep).

Time to start the grindstone then: when will HBM3 begin???

Ha. The better question is when will Villain Codex 3 begin? (And the answer is soon. We want to give HBM some time to breath, but there's no rest for the [s]weary[/i] wicked.)

One of the judges might have been using a weird bell curve metric. ;)
