Good equipment for a dragon

Advice

I was reading the thread
Equipping-Your-Dragon
and decided that I might give my dragon some equipment. Can anyone suggest what it should wear? Preferably the equipment should be things that can double as jewels are or are taste full. A cape or armor just seems kind of weird on a dragon.

Decorative barding might pass for a cape. Im not sure how it was called what knights put on their horses for celebrations.
Magic bracer obviously, crowns/tiaras/circlets, rings that could easily pass for a bracelet to a smaller creature. Tail spikes are fun too. Frankly a quadruped only has problems with handheld items, everything else just needs refitting?
Decorative barding, bracers and a necklace the size of a candelabre should be most stylish though.
Or if you prefer a tech-crazed dragon inventor outfit him with a servo harness with a few additional tool-limbs, but that reeks of Numeria

A cape might seem odd, but a mantle of protection would be fitting. Most magic rings work. Magic belts or headbands can be done tastefully. gloves and boots should be able to reshape themselves to fit over the dragons digits. Necklaces or amulets would have to worn relatively tightly so as not to bounce around. Ioun stones embedded into certain areas to mimic piercings is a nice touch. Speaking of, piercings made out of any suitable wondrous item like pearls of power or similar are a good way to go.

Unexpectedly, armor should have priority towards the belly, particularly near the chest. That is because most opponents will be attacking from below. Oh, and get chainmail for your neck and forelimbs (they often get exposed when you reach out for attacks).

Also- PROTECT YOUR CLOACA. Again, opponents attack from below, and that will be the most unprotected part of your scaly body (the mouth has a certain degree of toughness due to fire breath and having to deal with struggling prey. The head in general is saf-ish since it is raised up out of reach). But your rear? Yeah, that is not as protected by scales. Fear long spears.

Obviously this is meant for comedy, but it does touch on a small sense of verisimilitude.

Wand of Mage Armor takes care of the armor problem. Clasp of Swarmbane might be appropriate, save the dragon from using up it's breath weapon on vermin.

Circlet of Persuasion on the horns over the eye-brows could be made to work.

Grand Lodge

Something to give you a miss-chance or higher touch AC.

I would say it's definitely important to keep dragon psychology in mind, and remember that they are exceptionally vain and prideful. Rather than improve their strengths, a dragon would focus on mitigating weaknesses. Dragons take great pride in their impenetrable scaly hides; you won't find a dragon hiding its scales beyond barding or even implying that its scales needed to be strengthened with magic. However, a red dragon is going to be mindful of its vulnerability to cold damage, and will certainly stock up on magic to mitigate that weakness. Pearls of Power don't make a dragon's spells more powerful, just more plentiful. A Ring of Regeneration might also be a good choice, since dragons love to fight each other even as a prelude to mating, and have no healing abilities.

Liberty's Edge

Don't forget items that improve dexterity, as it will improve initiative and armor class. You might also want to see about the equivalent of a metamagic wand that allows breath weapons to be turned into different types of damage.

If you don't mind 3.5e, making an item out of the good version of shimmering scales to convert natural armor to a deflection bonus is good too.

Mithral breastplate is a must if it has any PC levels.

also, mind you, barding is only for mounts, it doesn't specify quadruped form, so normal pricing for your size category.

in essence, think of barding as armor that the creature wearing doesn't understand at all.

I also have a book with special items meant for dragons.

ones of interest are Verminslayer greaves which give him an AC bonus but also give him an additional bonus to AC and CMD against anyone he threatens and moves but did not provoke an AOO(such as using arcobatics). It describes them as greaves with an inlay of a dragon crushing a knight.

There is also a saddle type deal which uses the same stuff as a bag of holding to allow people to ride the dragon but be safe from the elements having doors on either side that you can shoot arrows through, though gravity and inertia do not carry through to the passengers.

they also have these barbs that are put in their scales which give ranged attacks a 75% miss chance against the dragon or any would be riders. they shoot force magic at missiles approaching the dragon.

and finally, dragons can wear rings, so give him rings.

Rings, neck-slot items and headband/head items probably physically fit best.

Just pretend he's a sorcerer...
Headband +2/4 CHA
Cloak of Resistance
Belt of +2/+4 DEX
Ring of Prot +1/+2 dflc
(2) Spring loaded wrist sheaths with wands (Obs Mist 1@1, Cure Moderate Wounds 2@3)
Amulet Mighty Fists
Hat of Disguise (change color or appear as fairy dragon, drake, linnorm, wyvern, ...
Handy Haversack (on self or unseen servant)
Rod MetaMag Extend Lsr, Rod MetaMag Silent Lsr.
couple runestones, pages of spell knowledge
ioun stones; Dusty Rose Prism, Dusty Rose Prism (cracked), (2) Vibrant Purple Prism (cracked), Tourmaline Sphere.
Wands; Infernal Heal 1@1, Comprehend Lang 1@1.
Scrolls; Dim Door 4@7, Enervation 4@7, False Life 2@3[5], Invisibility 2@3[5], Resist Energy 2@3[5], Protection from Arrows.
Pot; Twitch Tonic, AntiPlague, AntiToxin, (2) Cure Lgt Wnd.
spells; Mage Armor, Shield, Unseen Servant, False Life, Blur, Mirror Image, Ablative Barrier...

Thank you for the advice.

Amulet of Mighty Fists. Seriously. Think this item is for unarmed humanoids? Nooooo. There's a reason it's so expensive, and that reason is what happens when you give an Amulet of Mighty Fists to something with lots of natural weapons. In the claws of a dragon it's devastating.

Quite simply a dragon should everything.

EVERYTHING!!!!

He doesn't even need to use it... just stack in a pile and pour coins on it and bask in the glow. Then curl up and go to sleep all the while dreaming of there being more of 'Everything' for him to add to the pile...

Or keep it attached to the charred head that he hangs over the mantelpiece. "This one was a level 15 paladin!"

A good hint prelude would be to have PCs find the dragon's library, and find used/non-magical tomes of leadership or manuals of dexterity and such.....guess who has a +1 to +5 on all their stats?

Someone mentioned pearls of power -- that only works for prepared casters. I can't remember the name of the equivalent item for spontaneous casters, and there's just so many of them out there that I can't find it. Ring of wizardry might be useful, though, adding more spells per day.

Sorry, you're right, Runestones of Power.

Right, that's the one.

Also pages of spell knowledge for additional spells.

ALso remember that you can remove the spells listed in the bestiary stats with whatever spells you feel like.

Scarab Sages

Shadow piercings. You are considered to have +1 armor spikes that you are proficient in, allowing a Dragon to make full iterative attacks at it's BAB on top of any natural weapon attacks.

That's an option, but the dragon's natural weapons would be at -5 if any manufactured weapons are used.

Let's see lots of loot and wants to enhance effectiveness and combat ability...

I think some of the best equipment are: hirelings.

Martials, healers, arcane casters...especially full (9 level) casters. Increase action economy to bring parity when facing PCs and greatly expand versatility and increase survivability via casters.

Hirelings expect to be paid. Kobolds are fanatical devotees who worship dragons as gods and are just as capable of gaining class levels and using magical items on behalf of their draconic patrons.
