Hi all, this is a thread where we can discuss and agree on the type of game we all want to play and choose who will be the gm. I suggest everyone posts their preferences and we see where that leads us. To make it easier, maybe everyone who posted their preferences in GM_Nightingale can do so here again.
I suggest everyone states:
Posting rate
RP to battle ragio
Depth of NPC interaction
AP or others
World for game (Golarion/Homebrew/other)
Please feel free to add to this list.

Reposted from other thread:
I'm a consistent poster, (less so on weekends) and I'm only in one PbP game right now.
I'm in a kingmaker PbP, and my table game is currently playing through Skull & Shackles. So, with that said, I'd probably avoid those two AP's, but I do love Pirates, so a pirate themed homebrew would still be considered.
I would want to avoid murder-mystery style games, as I think the clue-following/detective aspect is a little hard to get right in this format.
I would probably prefer to start at level 1, and I'm down for E6 if that's what people are interested in.
RP:Combat ratio is not a major factor for me, as I'll find something to post regardless. I have been itching to play something that allows for more mounted combat, as that is very rarely done in most campaigns.
I've played a lot of different style characters, and will be flexible within a group to help it be successful. (Although I'm not a big fan of playing Wizard/Sorc).
Homebrew worlds are fun, and I'd be willing to collaborate on that with a group if needed, but Golarion is great also.
Spazmodeus |
Great, thanks Celtic.
Let's see...
Posting Rate: ususally multiple posts/day, can come down a bit dute to RL and work
RP ratio : RP is usually the focus in pbp, but I find it often depend son the players.
NPC interaction: I feel this really helps the immersion factor, when the people in the world seem just as alive as the PCs
AP or others: I'm easy on this one, but as Geriatric says rather not duplicate one I'm currently in: Kingmaker and carrion crown.
World for Game: I'm all for homebrew if the GM's up to the balancing/creative work it entails.
So I'm in a bunch of games, I tend to apply to what interests me. Many of the game's I'm in aren't even Pathfinder. I've been a DM in RL many times, but really only have the time to be a player in PBP now. So I'd be taking my hat out of consideration for being a DM, I just wouldn't be able to do the game justice.
Boss_Smiley |
I'm good to post at least once a day (often more, sometimes less) and for PBP I tend to lean somewhere around a 70/30 split favoring roleplay over combat. I've only recently picked up Pathfinder (after lots of 3.5) so homebrew or not will mostly seem the same to me.
I think the question we really need to answer is who is going to DM? Spaz and myself have bowed out earlier (time for Spaz, system unfamiliarity for me) but do either of you guys feel like leading the game? Should we try DM recruitment after coming up with more of a framework?
DM DoctorEvil |
I have been following the thread since the original post, but hadn't chimed in yet. I would be willing to run a game for you, but there would have to be a few stipulations.
1) It'd have to be on Golarion. I don't have the time or expertise to build a world from scratch and do it justice.
2) The adventure would have to be an AP or series of modules strung together. Again, time is too much of a factor for me to create a whole sandbox campaign without the framework of published materials.
3) Depending on the story you want to play, the characters should start out at low levels with backgrounds that fit that story. Unless you just want PFS scenarios, having wildly divergent backgrounds makes the coalescing of the group too hard to manage.
4) I can post once a day, sometimes more, but I run several games on the boards and play in a few others, so my time isn't tied to just this group. Good thing is that means I have experience, I guess...I'm about to get my first star for PFS gaming both on PbP and in RL.
If you can live with these things, then let's move to picking the game. I own several of the Paizo AP's and modules, and even some old D&D stuff from 1st edition. If there's a favorite I don't own, I don't mind investing in it. If you want PFS scenarios, we can that also.
DM DoctorEvil |
The list is (with my comments):
1) Rise of the Runelords - I am running this for 3-4 tables on PbP right now. One of the best done AP's IMO.
2) Crimson Throne - this AP is spotty at best to me so far. I would run it, but there are better options. I have two tables of this currently.
3) Second Darkness - I have a table of this running. It is not particularly well done, especially the first book so far.
4) Legacy of Fire - haven't run, but would like to.
5) Council of Thieves - got all but the first book during Paizo's holiday sale, can pick that up if you want.
6) Serpent's Skull - am just starting that with a homegroup.
7) Jade Regent - I have not run. Seems popular on the boards.
8) Shattered Star - have not run; has some ties to RotRL if players have run that already.
9) Reign of Winter - half-way through the first part with RL group, and I'm on a game as a player on PbP.
10) Wrath of the Righteous - in this as a player also, but haven't run. Uses the Mythic rules
11) Mummy's Mask - just the first part out so far.
That leaves out only a few (Skull & Shackles, kingmaker & Carrion Crown) which others had already asked to avoid anyway.
Also have a few modules (including AD&D stuff) as a starting place that can be strung together with a little imagination:
1)Dragon's Demand - runs from 1-8th level as a mini-AP.
2)Crypt of the Everflame series - classic old 3.5 pathfinder, should run to around 6th level or beyond.
3)Temple of Elemental Evil - an oldie, but a goodie Gygax campaign. Not updated for pathfinder, but that would be fun to do.
4) A whole host of other old D&D stuff.
5) or PFS if that's your choice - tons of those out there to pick from.
Geriatric_ |
Wow! Thanks Doctor Evil for your willingness to GM.
I am completely okay with running an AP.
I have a character already rolled for a previous Legacy of fire game. It ended up failing, and so I'm not much further than maybe the first book.
I'd be interested in Jade Regent or Mummy's Mask as well.
So for my order of interest:
1. Mummy's Mask
2. Jade Regent/ Legacy of Fire
3. Reign of Winter
4. Any others.
I'm really not very picky, and I'd be excited to play any of these.

Back, sorry for the quick thread, I had a really intense day yesterday.
Posting rate: 1 to 3 a day, less or much more on the weekend, depending.
RP to battle ragio : 50 to 70% rp.
Depth of NPC interaction : Nicely detailed (although I understand this can be hard)!
AP or others: Ready for anything.
World for game (Golarion/Homebrew/other): I like to get to know golarion more.
Here is a compilation so far:
Posting rate: For everyone mostly once a day to more (good sign).
RP: RP favored by 3 (4?), no opinion 1 and I really did not understand Zen's answer.
NPC interaction: Important to 3, unanswered by 2.
World: Slight favor toward homebrew
That said, thank you DM Dorctor Evil (who is old style like me and prefers DM over GM!) to suggest to be the GM.
Here is the tally on the APs:
1) RotRL: Please leave out, I am GMing it in RL.
2) CT: Not really liked by Dr.Evil.
3) SD: Not really liked by Dr.Evil.
4) LF: Liked by Dr.Evil
5) CoT: Please leave out, I am playing it in RL.
6) SK: Please leave out, I am playing it in RL.
7) JR: Please leave out, I am playing it on PBP.
8) SS: Sure.
9) RoW: Please leave out, I am playing it in PBP.
10) WotR: Interested
11) MM: Sure.
So, Legacy of fire, Shattered star, Wrath of the Righteous and Mummy's mask for the APs.
-Note, do not forget the wish of Geriatric to play a mounted character.
Also, I could go DMing. However, it would be my first time on the forums (but extensive RL experience). I so I would go either:
Homebrew
Rise of the Runelord
Kingmaker
If people are really more into homebrew, I have this old quest that I updated for 3.5 a while ago. I really like it as it takes place in a world I created over the past 15 years. Charactes start as villagers in a forgotten valley and have to face monsters (which they have never heard of). This is a style were monsters are scary and are unknown to people.... I could integrate mythic rules into the whole thing.
However, I would prefer to play rather than DM.
Sorry for the long post.
Zen Al'Shear |
guess my answer for rp versus combat was a little odd huh. lol. sorry. I like a good RP session over combat anyday. but sometime combat is just well needed.
Having DMed a RL of Jade Regent. I can say there is not a lot of need for mounted combat. but there is some.
I would love
Legacy of fire
mummys mask
Wrath of the righteous
DM DoctorEvil |
If I had to choose between Mummy's Mask and Legacy of Fire, I would choose LoF for three reasons.
1) It's been burning a hole on my shelf for a while wanting to be played
2) Mummy's Mask is just released and there aren't a lot of good notes by other DM's or material out to aid with it just yet.
3) I usually prefer to read through the whole AP before starting just in case there are spoilers, easter eggs, or other tidbits necessary to string the separate books together.
So if you want to play a AP, then it looks like it may be Legacy of Fire, which is initially set in the deserts of Katapesh, but moves on to some "interesting" places after that. The Player's Guide is available on the Paizo page or at this link. But it is not a free resource like many of the subsequent players' guides have been.
I think it still might make sense to run a module or shorter game first go-round to make sure you like my style, each other's ability and RPing, and the general sense of PbP party.
I'll let your majority rule, but the choice is LoF or something like Crypt of Everflame, Kobold King, or even Dragon's Demand. Let me know your preference and we can get rolling for PC's.
TheCelticCircle |
I would go with LoF too.
As for the issue of getting to know your style and get to know each other... hummmm.... I do not know how LoF starts, but why not have the characters meet before the adventure and just have them do a few simple things... like getting to Katapesh or something like that?
Otherwise, the only really short module I know is We be goblins. But it would still take around a month to play on PBP.
Anyway, I would go with LoF and hope to iron out the rough bits as time goes by.
BTW thanks again Dr.Evil

What are everybody's preferences as far as character role. Zen has mentioned a desire to be melee focused, does anyone else have a clear idea of what they want to play? I've been sort of all over the place with character creation recently so I'm flexible for whatever the party needs (though I am less experienced with support characters).
TheCelticCircle |
I agree with Spazmodeus for the style. Reading a few of your post gave me a good impression of your DMing.
@Boss_Smiley
I am trying to play classes that I never payed before in pathfinder everytime that I create a new character.
Of course, many of them I haven't played, but I have played my share of skill characters and healers. So excluding 3/4 casters, I should have reached:
Cavalier or Wizard. I have a concept for the cavalier that I really would like to play. The wizard would require more work.
DM DoctorEvil |
Sounds like we have decided on a game -Legacy of Fire, perhaps with a soft start. Now we need to see the characters. I have some normal build rules, but this is supposed be your game, so I'll let you guys decide. You can vote for or against by item number, but we should be consistent throughout:
1) 20 pt buy, none below 8 or over 18 before racial mods
2) no evil characters
3) 150 gp starting cash
4) Max hp at first level, average +1 (like PFS) at subsequent levels
5) 2 traits + 1 campaign trait (I will post these if you don't want to spring for the guide).
6) Core Races only (that means no tiefling or aasimar or wild creations)
7) Any classes, including new playtest classes. Archetypes ok as long as meets #8 below.
8) No third party source material. Any Paizo stuff, even player companion etc are okay with me. But must be Paizo published.
Ideally would have melee (usually fighter, monk, barbarian), divine/healing (usually cleric/druid), arcane (usually wizard, sorceror), skill monkey (usually ranger, rogue, bard) and a wildcard in this 5 man party. A wildcard may fit across multiple roles doing some of each, like paladin or inquisitor or even bard. Exactly which roles you take will be up to you, but someone may have to bend a little to fit the party, since we're not selecting players via traditional recruitment.
TheCelticCircle |
Boss_Smiley |
All those rules sound good to me, pretty standard really. Can someone direct me to where I can access the playtest classes, I haven't seen them.
So far it looks like we have a strong front line (two and a half melee characters assuming Celtic ends up playing a Cavalier) and a divine caster. That leaves scouting and arcane to Spaz and myself.
I'd be interested in playing a debuff focused witch but I'm not married to the idea.
DM DoctorEvil |
Thanks for posting the campaign traits! Theoretically, the party can have whatever make up you like, but if you don't have someone with certain skills (Disable Device, healing etc) then you'll need to make up for it in other ways, or suffer along the way.
Parties can be optimized just like PC's can, but it may take some suffering by the individual for the greater good.
So far our list is:
Melee - Zen or Celtic (Cavalier)
Arcane - Celtic (arcanist) or Boss_Smiley (witch)
Divine - Geriatric (Battle Oracle)
Scouting/Skills -
Wildcard - the oracle could fit here if another divine shows up
DM DoctorEvil |
Nice Zen. That works well.
So the updated list is:
Melee - Celtic (cavalier)
Arcane - Boss (witch?)
Divine - Geriatric (Oracle) or Spaz
Scouting/Skills - Zen
Wildcard - either Spaz or Geri's Oracle
Just need to hear what Spazmodeus has in mind, if Divine then that bumps Geriatric to Wildcard role, if not, then something that is dual-role like a ranger, paladin, bard, etc. (this is my favorite role...).
You guys can start building concepts as you like, following the rules above. I usually keep a running file of all my PC's on hero lab, so I'll test you out against it's rules engine when you have a crunch up.
Background will have you joining a caravan through Katapesh, either as guards, prisoners, or merchants. So consider how you got here.
Boss_Smiley |
@DoctorEvil: I'm thinking of playing a halfling witch that made her pact/learned her trade while enslaved and has recently escaped. As such I wanted to check how you felt about switching the Witch's casting stat to either Wisdom or Charisma (preferably Charisma for that Discworld 'convince you that terrible things are going to happen' vibe) as well as the creation of a middle-aged or older character?
TheCelticCircle |
Sounds good.
I will share the mechanical concept behind the Cavalier.
In the long run:
1) Use Team up to aid an ally (with the feat Heavenly vitue, will give +4 ac).
2) Use Archon style to deviate attacks from allies.
3) Use power attack and vital strike to deal some damage.
All in one round.
Opinions?
I am not sure whether the teamwork feat I will choose will be used to increase damage or defense.
Since everyone seems to have chosen I should have the character ready by the weekend.

I would usually not mess with the core rules and disallow this change to base stat, it becomes a slippery slope.
Boss_Smiley |
@DoctorEvil: Okay, I'll try to push Charisma and Intimidate as much as I can then, and just play her that way. How do you feel about character's being aged?
I'm also a little confused about how the aging penalties/bonuses work, are they meant to be cumulative (so a middle-aged character gets -1 to physical and +1 to mental, and an Old character gets -3 to physical and +2 to mental) or do the physical penalties increase without corresponding increases to mental bonuses?
