DM Patcher's Curse of the Crimson Throne Recruitment Thread.

Gamer Connection

Welcome to yet another recruitment thread! In my madness, I am looking for 4-5 players, one group only, to roam the streets of Korvosa, and find themselves involved in the conspiracies of the throne. Remember to download the Curse of the Crimson Throne Player's Guide from the Paizo website to understand the setting of this adventure path; here are the application rules.

Recruitment will close on Friday, the 24th of June.

• Races: All standard races from the Core Rulebook only will be allowed. Racial options from the APG will be allowed.
• Classes: All classes (Base and Prestige) from the Core Rulebook, APG and Ultimate Magic will be allowed. All archetypes will be allowed. Archetype stacking will be allowed - as long as the class features do not replace one another (as per the actual archetype rules).
• Favoured Class: The favoured class options from the Core Rulebook and APG will be acceptable. If the Magus receives some form of favoured class bonus in the near future, after the campaign has started, I will allow Magus players to retcon their favoured class bonus to this new class bonus if they so wish.
• Alignment: I will only allow Good and Neutral alignments.
• Ability Scores: Characters must be created with 20-point buy. No stat can be raised above 18 (prior to racial modifiers), and no stat can be lowered below 8 (prior to racial modifiers).
• Feats: Any feat from the Core Rulebook, APG and UM will be allowed. Any other feat from Paizo-compatible systems must be approved by me.
• Traits: Characters will start with three traits. One of these traits MUST be a Curse of the Crimson Throne Campaign Trait.
• Hit Points: Characters will start out with Maximum hit points for their class at 1st level.
• Starting Gold: Characters will start with maximum gold for their class.
• The Words of Power system will be permitted for casters. For balance reasons, Borrow Future will not be an allowed Word Spell, unless it receives heavy errata.

Before you apply, I am looking for roleplayers who can post a minimum of once per day, preferably twice per day (or more) - and if a week passes without any explanation of absence, you will be booted and replaced. However, if I am warned beforehand of absence, this is of course acceptable. So please make sure you have the time and dedication before you apply.

Also, I ask that you supply a finished character sheet and a basic outline for your character's background to display your concept - if you are chosen I will ask for a slightly more elaborate background.

I encourage you to mix backgrounds as well.

If you have any other questions, go ahead and ask.

Sounds interesting.

Thinking along the lines of urban ranger, bard (geisha?) or sorcerer (fey?)

May I ask how many game you GM at the moment?

DMing 3 games, soon to be 5. I have the time for this, though.

Wow, five? Sounds like a full time job in and of itself!

Indeed! But I have the time, as I mentioned.

Hey Patcher! Glad to see you're back on the PbPs again.

I'd like to submit a human or half-elven fighter, with an eye toward becoming a duelist. Perhaps a student at Orsini's academy, he'll be a dashing rogue type of guy. I'll put up a character later today or tomorrow.

Working on a sorcerer after all. I like the geisha idea, but not so much the implementation, though my concept will probably be along those social lines.

I'm thinking Serpentine, Maestro or Rakshasa for the bloodline.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Greetings, Fellows.

I am Anadyr Larcin, Arcane Duelist, and I grew up here in Korvosa.

Spoiler:

I had a somewhat normal, though poor, childhood - save that I have no memory of my parents... Instead, I was raised by my older sister, who was a dancer and performer. There were whispers about some of her private dances, but I take no stock in that -- my sister was the best person that I have ever known, and raised me as if I was her own... at least until she was murdered. I swore I would have my revenge, though, I do not think a barely-whiskered boy knew what he was promising.

Since then, I have been on my own, keeping myself fed with my quick tongue and wit [Trait #1: Lost Love, "parent", +2 bonus to Perform: Comedy] as best I can. The happiness of my childhood evaporated, and I blamed everyone, the gods included for the misfortunes I endured [Trait #2: History of Heresy]. I do not like to discuss those years -- sleeping in the piles of offal, trying to keep away from the bullies while I had a rind of cheese -- nor some of the things I did to survive, though I do admit there were times when my swift hands brought me the coin that my wits would not.

I was lucky enough to meet Sakor when I was but 15, he was a young Half-Orc ranger who thought he could overcome the prejudice against him and join the Sable Company. He found me after I'd been beaten trying to hide away a meat tart I'd been given after telling tales at the bakery -- he tended my wounds and taught me to fight [Trait #3: Fencer], though he never told me how he came to have such training himself. I still know not why he took me in, though it only served to show that true kindness and mercy comes not from the distant gods, but from we mortals who can be bothered to care. He helped me find the coin to get some small measure of bardic training, and he even assisted me in looking into what happened to my sister... Until a few weeks ago, when Sakor told me that she had been killed by Lamm or one of his lackeys... He told me that he'd pushed too hard to learn that information and was leaving town with an adventuring group until things "quieted down" -- and suggested that I join him... But a vow is a vow.

Can't actually come up with a backstory right now, I don't have enough time, but I'll get that done and probably post it tomorrow, if not sometime tonight. Just wanted to post so I could get back to this quickly. FYI, Savage Barbarian. I was thinking a Bodyguard or Bouncer, but I'll have to look over the player's guide.

Here is my magus, just need to do skills and add a trait. Background is on his profile, if you would like me to add more I can.

Would love to play, still fleshing out my character ideas. I've got a notion to go with a Varisian thief (lower-case 't' there, as he's technically a sorcerer). Gimme a minute to flesh him out.

Grigori The Ghost:

Human Varisian
Sorcerer 1

S 10 AC 14
D 16 HP 6
C 10 AL NG
I 14 F +1
W 10 R +4
Ch 16 W +2

Skills: Stealth +4; Bluff +7; Appraise +6; Disable Device +6; Sleight of Hand +6;
Knowledge (Local) +3
Feats: Deft Hands; Dodge; Eschew Materials
Traits: Deft Dodger; Resiliant; Unhappy Childhood (Religious) +2 concentration checks
Sorcerous Bloodline: Celestial. Summons add DR vs Evil; 6/day Heavenly Fire
heal or wound 1d4 damage
Cantrips: Daze; Light; Mage Hand; Prestidigitation
Level 1: Obscuring Mist; Vanish

As the game starts, he has the following gear:
Pickpockets Clothing (Free); Dagger w/ Wrist Sheath (3gp total);
117gp in coins, small gemstones, jewelry and other easily pawnable items

Grigori has no memory of life outside of Korvosa. He doesn't remember anything about parents, either. He's always been an orphan, so far as he can recall.

He made a life for himself stealing to survive until Gaedren Lamm took him in. He thought he'd finally found a home, but the conditions were brutal. He hoped to find a way to get free, but the opportunity never really came.

It wasn't until he was fourteen, and he found himself straying into the temples in town, seemingly drawn to what his coarser friends chidingly called the angels of his better nature. When Gaedren got wind of his dalliances with the good people in the shrines and churges, he arranged for Grigori's friends to beat the tar out of him. Left for dead, he was taken in by one of the shrines, a small church dedicated to Sarenrae in her aspect as the Redeemer. There he was nursed back to health, and his natural gifts and connection with the gods nurtured.

Grigori's not quite gotten past his rough youth, nor his somewhat twisted sense of morals - the only thing that kept him and his young friends alive was to steal for themselves and others who were needy - but he's determined to make a fresh start, and better choices going forward.

I'd be interested in playing with Xantrian Carver.

Basic background for this character is that he is a highly trained chef who is foul-tempered in the kitchen, but generous to a fault with impoverished children. He developed a knack for throwing knives while in the kitchen to scare people who displeased him. He never hit anybody - his aim was far too good for that. Xantrian developed a fondness for throwing weapons, however, and has taken it to the extreme by throwing any weapon he can get his hands on.

Basic goals are to explore different cultures to learn their cuisines. He can't afford to send himself around in style, however, so he's planning on adventuring to be pay the bills and, hopefully, bring his attention to unique cuisines.

Here is Gerr Hericksen, swashbuckling rogue and former Lamm's Lamb. He's a protege of Vencarlo Orisini and is now looking for revenge on the bastard that tried to kill him and left him for dead.

I'd like to submit a character that didn't get chosen for another PbP I applied for recently, an elf enchanter with the Controller subspecialization--if the party needs a face, I can switch her out to the main Enchanter or subschool Manipulator specializations, though.

Spoiler:
Ansha Saeralyan
Elf female
Chaotic Neutral
Wizard 1 (enchanter-controller)

S 7
D 10
C 11
I 19
W 10
Ch 16

BAB 0 CMB -2 CMD 8
HP 7
AC 10
Fort 0+0 = 0 Reflex 0 +0 = 0 Will 2+ 0 = 2
Skills: Bluff, Diplomacy, Knowledge (arcana), Knowledge (nature), Knowledge (planes), Spellcraft

Feats: Either Eyes of the Abyss (30' darkvision, +1 Perception and -1 Diplomacy per Abyssal Heritor feat, originally from Hordes of the Abyss) if acceptable, or Spell Focus (enchantment)

Traits: Charming, Focused Mind, Orphaned (both adoptive parents were murdered)

Spells Known: 0--all
1--Charm Person, Sleep, Memory Lapse, Shield, Mage Armor, Magic Missile, Burning Hands

Background concept in brief: Ansha Saeralyan is a runaway elven noblewoman whose family has fallen into worship of the demonlord Nocticula. She is also an amnesiac who believes that the married elven adventurers who rescued her were her parents--and has taken grievous offense that the two were murdered recently in the streets of Korvosa on the trio's most recent trip. Unfortunately, the deaths of her adoptive parents has also provided a catalyst for the slow return of her memories.

I'd like to submit a character, but I'm at work right now so I can't dream one up right now though. I will make a submission later tonight after considering a concept and creating a character.

I'm throwing Ruhk into the mix, enjoy.

My inner optimizer is telling me you're missing 1 ability score point - assuming you put the +2 for being human into Charisma. 16 (10) + 12 (2) + 15 (7) = 19. The alternative is that you put the +2 in Intellect and went 14 (5) + 12 (2) + 17 (13) - am I wrong?

Very nice background - enjoyable read. If picked, I hope you'll update your profile to include all your statistics.

Also - if anybody wants feedback on their application, feel free to ask.

Hah! Generous of you, then I'll ask, how does it look?

I'll take feedback, please.

Me, too, please!

Feedback is always nice. I'll take some if you have any.

Presenting Chavakala for your consideration and I would love feedback if you have any for me.

Background:

Chavakala grew up in the wagons of a Varisian caravan and fell in love with the starry night sky when she was a little girl. While other children in the caravan slept, Chavakala would slip outside and find a spot of cool, wet grass or an isolated boulder where she could lay down and watch the skies for hours at a time. "Touched by the stars," the elders in the caravan said.
When she was 7, strange breezes, sounds, lights, and shadows began to manifest around Chavakala, especially at night. Whispers that no one else could hear teased at her mind. At first, the sights, sounds and feel of these mysterious spirits threated to drive her mad. She was only able to find peace by losing herself meditating in the night sky. But, after a time, she began to find some semblance of control. The spirits still grabbed at her and manifested at bad times, but Chavakala also began to gain a measure of control and in time found she was sometimes able to control them to move small objects or create sounds.

As she moved into her teenage, years, other unusual powers manifested. First, an ability to gather the spirits around her in a starry coat. A couple years later, when her younger sister was threatened by a Sczarni thug, she found the ability to gather the spirits around a foe to bring a chill so deep that it nearly killed him.

But none of her abilities were able to help during a fateful caravan trip to Korvosa. In two short weeks, Chavakala's sister deteriorated from a bright, happy, young 14-year old to a shivering husk. Chavankala and the entire caravan were devastated when she passed away. Searching her things, Chavakala discovered a mostly used vial of a strange liquid and after asking around, found that the substance was shiver, a terribly addictive drug.

Chavakala swore she would find out who was responsible for the terrible death of her sister. When the caravan left town a couple weeks after her sister's death, she remained behind, determined to avenge her. It didn't take long for her to discover the immediate source. She learned that her sister had taken a liking to the same Sczarni thug that Chavakala had faced in a prior trip to Korvosa. This time, she didn't stop the spirits from killing him.

But, before he passed, Chavakala learned another name. Gaedren Lamm. The Sczarni's source for Shiver. And she vowed that she would bring down the entire vile enterprise that brought about her sister's doom.

Silver Crusade

A cleric of Pharesma...

his background is in the profile

and I'm in the UK...post daily in the pbps that do..

If you wan a fully speced out character, I should have time to do that after this weekend. As I have some family things to sort out, which will take me away from being able to post for a few days.

Alright. Let's see.

@alientude: It's a fairly readable statblock; I would like to see all the different aspects separated, in particular which abilities are your feats, your traits, ect. Could you also elaborate upon your skills - the explanations for the modifier, essentially. I would also like to see more background story - though the concept comes across well enough, and as such background is only necessary if accepted.

@Gerr: Your sheet is a bit difficult to read. This is mostly personal preference from my part, but I would prefer to see some formatting to make each section stand out a little more. If you could also elaborate upon the skills - why you have the different modifiers and such - then that would be great. A bit more backstory would be preferable as well - though only a necessity if accepted.

@Ruhk: I like the separation of the sections. Your will save should be +5, not +3. If I were to nitpick I'd prefer a little more formatting in the upper part of the profile, but it's easy to read and displays your character. The background is a little weak in the presentation.

@Anadyr: Similar to Gerr, your sheet is a bit difficult to read. I would also like you to put your traits in your profile - though nice way to show their inclusion in your backstory, and your story is good. Personal preference question here, but do you roleplay in first or third person?

@Chavakala: Nice statblock, easy to read. Could you separate your special abilities into traits, racial abilities, feats, class abilities and ect.? Background-wise you're doing great.

I guess you might as well look at my character sheet while you're at it, even though I'm sure it's perfect.

;-)

@Petr: Similar nitpicking as Anadyr and Gerr; I would like some more formatting. The separation of the sections is good, though it does get a bit difficult to read. The backstory could use some fleshing out as well.

When in character, I tend to speak in first person -- however, if there's a preference one way or another, let me know.

I've tried to make a nicer text version of the character sheet -- if it's still giving you issues, I can always send a PDF.

I'll ask for feedback on my character - just the mechanics and the backstory, please. The stats are pretty hard to read and very consolidated. I'll clean them up some when I get a mo.

I've fixed the will save, added an extra language as Druidic turned out to be free, and I've also padded the background a little, plus wrote it with a few spaces for ease of reading.

After thinking it over, I'll bow out of the running. Have a good game!

Yes, the +2 went into intelligence. I wanted her to be well rounded in mental stats, as an older lady with experience in managing household, representing craftsmen, and maintaining and expanding on a trading business.

I've updated the profile. Let me know if it the explanation for the skills, feats, and traits works okay. I'll definitely be doing more background if accepted. One thing to add to my previous overview is the addition of the "Missing Child: Son or Daughter" trait. The idea behind this is that Xantrian takes great pains to feed street children, and sees them as his unofficial sons and daughters. He's seen how Gaedren's "Little Lamms" have turned the children into thieves has caused him to seek revenge and free the kids.

This fellow attempted to get into another Curse of the Crimson Throne game, and didn't make the cut, so hey, why not try here!?

All his info can be found in the profile.

Always open to feedback, if you wouldn't mind.

I posted earlier as The Dorf. My proposed character is in this profile. Let me know if you have any feedback.

@Ezru: Let's see, the profile is a little bare - I see no skills either. I recommend you add some formatting, if you can find the time to do so. The background concept is decent, though not outstanding - it gets the concept of your character across nicely, though.

@Pace: Your profile is easy to read - a tad bare, but the formatting and the separation of sections are good. I would like to see elaboration on your skills. Background is good.

Silver Crusade

I've got Parneth more or less speced out, with his background so take a look and let me know what you think.

I think I got the profile in pretty good shape. The spoilers contain the breakdowns of all the rolls, and now there is an appearance section for the background.

@Parneth: Holy - I have never seen such an elaborate sheet on the forums. Absolutely astonishingly good work, the background is great, and it's one of the best applications in this thread, I must say. It does come off as a little clunky, if I am to criticize it, but... I'm still massively impressed.

@Pace: It's better now, thank you. Your appearance section seems to have some failing format, but other than that it's easy to read and everything is sectioned nicely. Good work.

Am closing applications at 6PM CET - in 5 hours from now.

*flirts with Patcher*

Hey there, big kitty..got a space for lil' old Leena?

Because every party can use a bard!

My sheet isn't done yet- I have to get to work in a few minutes. I might have time to get it worked up tonight, I might not. Back to back full-day and early morning shifts make for little time, sadly. Still, the important stuff's up. ;)

@Leena: If only the touch of a woman did anything for me... I mean!

I notice you have 2 campaign traits - and it causes a minor conflict in my head because I can definitely see the idea between your two traits. I'll let you go with it if you reduce one of those bonuses to +1 (your choice) - to lowers the potency of the trait. I do need to see a completed sheet, though - skills, defences, spells, ect., which I also see will be difficult since you're off to work. If you can get your sheet finished by tomorrow between 12PM and 3PM CET, you'll be eligible for candidacy.

For those of you wondering, once recruitment's closed, I will review every applicant and form a party based on compatability, concept, balance and other factors. Expect the OOC thread to be up tomorrow at the latest.

Should I assume that the lack of critique means my new sheet layout works?

Alright, it's 6 PM here in Norway, so that means the deadline is now closed.

Here is the list of applicants:

Tilnar - Anadyr (Human Bard)
PrinceofDarkness - Ezru (Human Magus)
Jason Packer 445 - Grigori the Ghost (Human Sorcerer)
alientude - Xantrian Carver (Human Fighter)
Ansha - Ansha Saeralyan (Elf Wizard)
BoggBear - Ruhk the Dandy (Human Druid)
Hu5tru - Iolana (Human Bard)
michaelane - Chavakala (Human Oracle)
Deevor - Parneth Servias (Human Cleric)
hogarth - Petr Semchuk (Human Oracle)
Nazard - Arryn Dawood (Human Fighter)
The Dorf - Pace Gambol (Human Fighter)
shadowhntr7 - Leena Alchine (Human Bard)
DreamingWarforged - Djal (Half-Elf Ranger)

I will go through the reviewing process throughout this evening, and will post when I have decided on the party. Wish you all the best of luck.

Roakrak, you did not supply a character sheet in time. Unless you can post a sheet within the hour, I'm afraid you won't be considered for a spot.

@Anadyr: The sheet looks good now - I apologise for my delay in responding. Real-life is a little hectic at the moment. If I were to ask you to change anything, it would be to add the information of all the different traits, feats and special abilities - but that is nitpicking, and not at all necessary.

I'm 2 minutes late...

Here's Limping Djal. I understand if you do not take him into account. Got surprised with the timezone for the 24.

Djal wrote:

Since you were only 2 minutes late, and you were here when the recruitment topic opened, I will take you into consideration. Sheet looks good too.

@Grigori: As I went over the applications, I noticed you were looking for feedback. I missed this, and I apologise. The sheet is rather lacking, though the backstory is decent.

It's all good. I've been busy IRL, so I haven't had the time to come up with anything decent. I had the Character sheet, but just happened to be out at the deadline. In fact, I only just got home a little while ago. Again, though, I didn't have anywhere near a decent backstory thought up,
so I pretty much wouldn't have been in the running. Good luck to those of you who make it.

Alright, judgement day hath cometh!

There were a lot of great applications - and I apologise for those that were not selected. The five players who will journey through Korvosa and attempt to extract vengeance upon Gaedren Lamm are...

Deevor - Parneth Servias (Human Cleric)
The Dorf - Pace Gambol (Human Fighter)
DreamingWarforged - Djal (Half-Elf Ranger)
Hu5tru - Iolana (Human Bard)
michaelane - Chavakala (Human Oracle)

I will put up the OOC thread shortly. I wish those of you who were not selected the best of luck - and in the future, if I start more APs, you are all welcome to apply.

Link to OOC thread.
