Rules Questions

Hi all just a quick question about bonus spells it say's in the main rules that a character can fill a spell slot with a lower level spell if they want to , Even if the spell slot is for a level of spell that could not cast due to not having a high enough stat i.e a wizard can not cast 5th lvl spells because he has a 14 int.
So could a 1st lvl spell caster use bonus slots gained by a high stat to cast lower lvl spells i.e a wizard with 17 int gets a bonus 1st,2nd & 3rd lvl spells could he use the two higher lvl slots to learn two more 1st lvl spells a day ?

Sorry no.

My understanding is that you do not get the bonus slots until you can cast at least one spell without them... that is, your third level bonus spell slot only becomes available once you reach 5th (for a wizard/cleric).

I am not sure where it explains this (no book at the moment) but it would play havoc with the system to allow a first level character with an 18 int to cast an additional 3 first level spells...

[Thanks for the quick answer but still a little gray about it i see what your say that they need to be of high enough lvl to cast spells of a given lvl BUT they are not casting spells of that lvl they are casting lower lvl spells in place of the higher ones which it say's a character can do (see p 218 main rules)/QUOTE]

hi thanks for the quick replay and i can see what your saying BUT they are not being used for spells that are to higher lvl to cast it say on page 218 (i think) that a spell caster can choose to put a lower lvl spell in a higher lvl spell slot if they cannot cast spells of that lvl i.e a wizard with 14 int gains access to his 5th lvl spell slots can not cast 5th lvl spells so he uses the slots for lower lvl spells

Abilities and Spellcasters

The ability that governs bonus spells depends on what type of spellcaster your character is: Intelligence for wizards; Wisdom for clerics, druids, and rangers; and Charisma for bards, paladins, and sorcerers. In addition to having a high ability score, a spellcaster must be of a high enough class level to be able to cast spells of a given spell level. See the class descriptions in Classes for details.

So to use those higher level bonus spell slots you must be high enough level to cast that given spell level.

If you are not high enough level then you do not have access to those bonus spell slots.

you're asking: "Can I put a 4th level spell in a 5th level spell slot even though I currently cannot cast 5th level spells, but I have access to those slots."

the answer is yes, you can use your 5th level spell slots for 4th level spells, and they behave in all ways as a 4th level spell.

however you cannot use your 5th level slots for a Metamagic'd spell unless the spell+Metamagic slot increase is 4 or lower.

So you all seem to be saying that you can only use the slots if your a high enough lvl. even thou a caster can access spell slots of a level that they cant use due to a low stat.
So a wizard can use spell slots for other spells even thou they do not have the int to use that lvl of spell

Hi karjak thats not what i was asking read my orignal post and you will see what i'm on about

Right, it's level not int score - bolded parts of the above rules quotes say it.

It's the reverse of what you're thinking.

It's a 10th level magic user with an 11 int can use his 3rd level slot to get an extra 1st level spell, NOT a 1st level MU with an 18int uses the 3rd level slot which he's not high enough level to cast yet.

You don't get bonus spell slots for a spell level until your class level is high enough to grant you the non-bonus spell slots for that spell level.

yes, because you're not casting a 5th level spell, you're using a 5th level spell slot to cast a 4th level spell.

and you can already cast 4th level spells.

Thanks sean it was just one of those questions that was in the back of my mind bothering me

That is correct. A 20th caster with a 11 stat could sub all his slots to be 1st level spells. A 1st level caster with a 28 stat can only use the 3 bonus 1st level spells that his stat provides.

Those are the extreme examples. A 20th level caster with a 20 stat could also switch all his spells to be 1st level or half 1st and half 2nd or any legal combination of his slots.

I am not counting zero level spells in these examples.

So could a level 7 wizard, with an Int score of 26, cast a 7th level spell?

No.

This just isn't true. If a high level wizard had 16 Intelligence and 8th-level spell slots, he could prepare maximized intensified fireballs left and right.

Metamagic does not change a spell's level (excepting heighten spell*) and is actually a great way to make effecient use of those extra slots.

* Despite this, I'm pretty certain my above-mentioned wizard could still prepare a spell heightened to 8th-level as well.
