My wife doesn't hate math nearly as much as I do- in fact she seems to like it, which disturbs/worries me. However, even she states that the problem with math in the US today and even in yesteryear isn't that all kids are dumb and all math teachers are brilliant and frustrated, it's the way it's taught. It really does encourage a split in the class between those who "get it" and those who "don't get it" and friction between the two factions is encouraged, sometimes unknowingly, by the teacher. It's too binary for me, at the very least.

The last two semesters I've been very fortunate to have math teachers who actually cared about all of their students learning math. This semester I am not so fortunate. I may not be able to work out the problems as fast as some of the other folks in my class, but overall my grades are better. To quote my chem teacher (he was an awful teacher but it was a good saying) "Persistence beats talent every day of the week."

On the other hand, I do not have a good feeling at all about the test I have to go take right now. I memorize well, buit there are limits. :(

Good luck! Break a leg. Thinking good thoughts. And all that jazz! :)

I would have killed and eaten Gilligan after I grew tired of coconut sandwiches. And I would have seduced Mary Ann and Ginger long before the ship went down.

there would not have been enough meat on those bones to have been worth it. Heck they had a cannibal episode, they did what any sane long pork eater would do, drool looking at the Skipper.

Well... if it'd been an American place, we'd be Detroit - too much ethnic segregation, screwed over by General Motors, at least one decent soul-singer (no good sport-teams, though) - so... pretty cool. :D

Hey! Our sports teams are pretty good. Even the lowly Lions have found some roar!

Mrgh!

Who Mr. GH?

All that talk of the beach. I miss it.

Mr. GH is the overlord of the planet Mrgh, located in the Den Tis Galaxy. As overlord, he is responsible for all things in life that make you want to go, 'Mrgh'. His influence in our realm has been increasing, especially noted by those of increasing age. The young seem to be immune to his influence, but that natural resistance fades over time.

Damn you MrGH! *holds prothagonous jaw* MRGH!

Yes, Mr F, you seem to have a cavity starting on the tooth under your bridge. It will be $1200 to fix that. That's IF your insurance doesn't exclude coverage.

Looking forward to resuming our trek through Kingmaker this Sunday.

Well, Janet's plans to usurp control of the company hit a snag when Lisa suddenly announced that she was stepping down in favor of Sebastian. Meanwhile, James and Erik had to delay their long-planned road trip to New Mexico, after they found out they were still wanted by the state authorities after their previous visit. And, across town, Jason was taken aback when Liz....No, wait! That's my soap opera!

Trying so hard not to just walk off the job. I just had another bout with my supervisor... This woman is impossible to please. I really don't think I can work like this.

So. Angry. Each. Word. Is. Its. Own. Sentence.

So, somebody apparently suggested taking Marry, Kickstarter, and the Flagship, wrapping them together in confiscated Furs, and burying them deep in Hell. And I was all like, "Not in my layer, thank you very much!"

Well... Now I'm more confused than angry, so I guess that's an improvement...

Liberty's Edge

After a month of waiting, I just found out I didn't get the job. Only thing I can do now is re-apply at all of the other places I applied at before.

@ Freehold - Sorry, I wish I could offer you advice. Best I can do is offer sympathy.

@ Shiny - That sux. Keep trying, and try to keep positive.

Sorry, I'm cranky today.

no apologies necessary. And I wish it was just that she was a b~+@#, but it's not. It's leaning towards more of a professional issue, and that bothers me. I have former coworkers swearing I should do what I can to get fired or downsized so I can get unemployment, but I do have the second job so I'm not sure if I would even be able to get it. I used some of my anger productively and found out a few things that are available to me through the second job for college and got a bit of info for how to write a letter of recommendation for college the through them, which improves my day some, but I'm still peeved over what happened today. It's really not my fault if someone ignores me or gives me bad info and decided to give you the good stuff.

I feel your pain. I went and applied to a temp agency this morning and I keep indicating that I do not need to be targeted in such a narrow scope; I'm open to a lot of other office / admin type jobs. People keep wanting to pitch business analyst positions at me. Most of what those jobs are asking for have requirements I'm unable to fulfill as my experience wasn't IT related.

There's a regional bank that I applied for 4 different positions (from 5 openings) last Friday. They tend to have employment managers on site when you drop in (they did not take applications online). I wasn't fortunate last week, but I called for a follow-up today. They were looking at an analyst position. However, I applied for other jobs - while beneath my skill set - that I could easily do w/o any trouble.

Personally, I don't want the analyst job. They tend to be feast or famine and I don't necessarily enjoy getting caught in the famine phase as they're the ones that get turned over when a project ends and another is not scheduled to come up soon. :/

*job stuff*

My partner has been having a really tough time with being unemployed. I'm trying my best to keep him positive, but he's heard the usual chin-up stuff too many times. If you don't mind my asking, what sort of coping method would you recommend?

Anyplace he could volunteer - Habitat for Humanity, charity work, free tutoring, etc? Oftentimes feeling useful is an excellent cure for the unemployed blues.

I just really hate how this prof expects us to memorize a boatload of formulas. Some are provided, but you have to be able to recognize them on sight since they aren't labeled and all the really important ones you just have to know. I have an entire whiteboard covered with 'really important' formulas I'm supposed to have memorized. Stupid midterms. So glad next week is spring break. My brain is ready to explode after so many tests.

I remember fussing when having to memorize the quadratic equation. Now? That seems to be child's play. Especially when Euler's number is getting thrown into the mix as being a required part of the formula. Today, it was S = Soe^kt.

*kaboom*

That looks an awful lot like my chemistry homework.

Up until this semester, math was my easy class....now I'm starting to worry about what calculus is going to be like....and I'm going to be taking this the same semester as organic chemistry? What's wrong with me?

I blame all the brain explosions. It's murder on the SAN score. :)

And I honestly don't think I could handle that quarterly schedule. A 15 week semester is already pretty crammed to start with.

I have a nagging suspicion I've told this anecdote before... Pretty early into my MAC 2311 (Calculus with Analytic Geometry I) course, I figured out I had little-to-no chance of achieving a passing grade on the final, which was 70%-80% percent of the class grade. So I instead spent most of the semester learning to program my TI graphing calculator with all the formulas... which I then used to pass (cheat) the test (A-).

I may have posted this before, but CH could your partner volunteer for something like this?

Silver Crusade

Nice link, Amby. He's also an animal lover, so maybe something like that would work. I forwarded him the link.

He's also considering his mother's suggestion of taking some part time job (Starbucks, etc) while he keeps looking, just to get out of the apartment 20 hours a week. He wasn't keen on that route, and we're not 100% sure it will do the trick (because the issue has more to do with self-worth than it does with money; he would like to use that degree he spent so much time and money earning) but it may be worth a try.

Fawtlies are the best.

Shiny and Urizen, good luck with your job searches. Sorry to hear it's been so rough for you guys.

Freehold, I'm sorry to hear about the job situation. I can empathize, and I hope you resolve it or you can find something else.

CH, I'm sorry your partner is going through a rough time. Treppa's volunteering suggestion sounds great to me.

Thanks, Heath, and I'm sorry about your loss.

Thanks.

I'm not sure I woulda thunk of it if Treppa hadn't reminded me with her post about volunteering. So we're like Walsh and Mays: she set up the shot for me, and I bopped it over the net. :)

I'd imagine volunteering for a cause that interests him could have a profound improvement to his morale, especially when he can see firsthand how he made the community a better place.

It sounds cheesy, but I was going through a f@!~ed up time last year.

I listened to the Al Pacino speech from Any Given Sunday over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over until I clawed my way out.

Oops...

Yeah Heathy, +1 on the condolences for your loss.

And +1 to Urizen, Shiny, and Freehold on the rough job market right now. Freehold, I know it's gnawing at your reserves of restraint, but stick with the job as long as you can, or until you can line up something concrete to replace it.

And good luck to Badger on SupaStah! Round 4. Break a leg, rip off a face, whatever badgers due to appease the gods, luck, and fate.
