February 5th... When did you get a Delorean?
It's 8:42 am on February 4th here and a warm and sweltering 12 degrees (-4 if you want to go by windchill) with a fresh 4 inches (of snow) on the ground so it looks like the side of a holiday tin.
Aargh. I've been debating all weekend whether to pack my sweaters away until next year already.
It's like washing the car: if I pack them up. the weather *might* drop back down to the fifties.

Well, I just hit my mother with the clue hammer. I doubt she'll get it, but at least I made myself clear.
NobodysMom: I didn't see a charge for repairing the fence and the gates on the monthly statement! Why haven't they repaired the fence and the gates yet? Aren't the tenants getting a dog? How are they going to pay for it?
NobodysHome: I cannot emphasize strongly enough how much I would prefer you let the property managers manage the property. That's why you're paying them. I will not be involved in this.
And that's a verbatim quote from me, by the way.
I don't think she'll get it, but seriously. Leave the property managers alone!

Why you don't ask me if I need help when I'm shopping.
Worker at hardware store: Can I help you with anything?
Captain Yesterday: Yes, which of these chainsaws would you recommend I attach to my hand, in case there's a Zombie Apocalypse?
No, that is a reason to always ask you if you need help. Clearly you are one of the great thinkers of our time, and need every possible opportunity to share your wisdom.

Wow... when you're already playing a vanilla rogue and your dice decide to go on a cold streak, it's... amazingly harsh:
- 4 traps on the journey. Missed Perception on all 4
- 2 of the traps were pit traps. Failed the Reflex save on both and fell in
- Failed to climb the rope lowered into the pit so I could get out
- Rolling as the GMNPC barbarian, missed the zombie threatening me, so took the attack of opportunity as I stood up
Virtually all of the rolls required needed an 8 on the die or more. My rolls were 7, 6, 1, 2, 1, 4, 4, 2.
At the same time, the GM's +4 to hit zombies were hitting our 18 ACs about 80% of the time.
The GMNPC barbarian died. The rest of us fled with our tails between our legs. I'll write up the obit when I have more time, but wow... some sessions just suuuuuuuuuuuuuuck if you're playing low-level PCs.

This sounds like the guy playing the Samurai in my Giantslayer game. Been gaming with him for about 10 years now, and his ability to roll terribly is legendary. I once witnessed him roll 12 natural 1's in a single 3 hour session.

I'm going to Japan on 2nd week of April. Hokkaido.
Day 1: Noboribetsu (Hotsprings)
Day 2: Hakodate (Hell's Valley + Mochis)
Day 3: Lake Toya + Bear Park
Day 4: Sapporo (Shiroi Kobito Chocolate Factory + Moerenuma Park )
Day 5: Sapporo (Clock Tower + Beer Museum + Hokkaido Shrine Ton-gu )
Day 6: Aomori ( Furukawa Fish market +Nebuta Warasse)
Day 7: Aomori (Hirosaki + Lake Towada)
Did I screw up too badly? I copied some itinerary from travel sites and used trip advisor for the rest. Still need to get to Tokyo to get to Narita Airport so we can head home at the end of 10 days...
The issue is I don't even know how close those places are to each other =P
I have next to no sense of direction, but I can't just have an unplanned trip...

Mort, since Hokkaido's main airport is in Sapporo, I recommend starting there.
Noboribetsu : Take a JR train from New Chitose Airport to Minami-Chitose Station (3 minutes) and transfer to a JR limited express train bound for Hakodate. Get off at Noboribetsu Station about 40 minutes later. The one way trip costs around 3000 yen. If you take local trains instead, travel time increases by about half an hour, but the one way fare is only 1590 yen. The trip is fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass and Hokkaido Rail Pass.
From Noboribetsu Station, Noboribetsu Onsen is reached in a 15 minute bus ride (340 yen, one or two buses per hour). The buses are operated by Donan Bus and are not covered by the Japan Rail Pass. Alternatively, a taxi ride costs about 2500 yen.
Hakodate : Take the JR Tohoku/Hokkaido Shinkansen from Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto (4 hours) and transfer to the relay train to Hakodate Station in central Hakodate (20 minutes). The entire one way trip costs around 23,000 yen and takes under 5 hours. It is fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass and JR East South Hokkaido Rail Pass. Note that seat reservations are mandatory on Hayabusa trains between Tokyo and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto.
Lake Toya : Take the JR Tohoku/Hokkaido Shinkansen from Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto (4 hours) and transfer to the Hokuto limited express to Toya Station (2 hours). The entire one way trip costs around 25,000 yen and takes around six hours. It is fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass and JR East South Hokkaido Rail Pass. Note that seat reservations are mandatory on Hayabusa trains between Tokyo and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto.
Aomori : Take a Hayabusa train on the JR Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Shin-Aomori (3.5 hours) and transfer to a local or limited express train for Aomori Station (5 minutes). The entire one way trip takes around four hours, costs about 17,500 yen and is fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass, JR East Tohoku Area Pass and JR East South Hokkaido Pass. Seat reservations are mandatory on Hayabusa trains. There is about one connection per hour.
I don't have any information on the best order to see those sites, so you may want to consult your travel agent for specifics.

From Noboribetsu - how do you get to Haokodate?
Is it possible to stay in Hokkaido area and do travelling from there to Haokodate, Lake Toya and Aomori?
Then after that we Shinkansen from near Aomori to Tokyo for last 2 days.
And from there, we can find the road to Mordor?
Asking, for a friend.

It's sad: Shiro is an excellent GM, and a great homebrew campaign creator, but he fell into the classic AP 'trap' of overmotivation. I complain about it in APs all the time: Don't put level-up or expected resting points in situations where roleplayers won't stop, or where they have to suspend disbelief as the bad guys just sit around with half their fortress pillaged and looted, not noticing, until the party rests and returns to finish off the other half.
In Shiro's case, two kids were kidnapped by a necromancer. So yeah, our party decided to try to make a final push to rescue them and got pounded (one dead, three fled). Turns out he'd expected us to rest just outside the necromancer's lair, at which point he would have put us up to 3rd level. But even though we were all hurt and low on resources, not a single one of us was willing to rest for 8 hours while the kids were in the necromancer's clutches.
So it made for great roleplay, but he seemed to feel a little bit bad that his AP level-set for Paizo APs (a vanilla non-optimized party should be able to make it through with some difficulty) already has a death and a party loss after just 2 sessions.
But it's still all kinds of fun, and a riveting story so far. For most of us, it was live and learn!

I swear, the Girl Scout who gets Shiro's house in her territory should have to pay a commission.
Girl Scout, coming by on game day: Hellooooooo? Is anybody home?
Shiro: Sure! What do you need?
Girl Scout: I'm selling Girl Scout cookies. I have...
Shiro: Oh, never mind that! I'll take one of everything you have!
Girl Scout: Don't you want to know what they are?
Shiro: No. I can read the boxes. I'm sure they're cookies of some sort!
Girl Scout: Thank you! (Tries to leave)
NobodysHome: Wait! Wait! I need one of everything, too!
Girl Scout: What? (Eyes mohawk nervously)
NobodysHome: I want one of all your cookies, too!
Girl Scout: But I'm out of one of them!
NobodysHome: No worries! Just give me what you have!
I'm pretty sure if she'd been carrying a few more cases, she would have made well over $100 for a single visit. As it was, when, er, "Man with no nickname yet" heard that she was out of Thin Mints, he decided not to get up for a third "one of everything" order, though he was thinking about it...

This morning I went to my sleep clinic to follow up on the sleep study I had last week. The clinic diagnosed me with sleep apnea, which explains the depression -- people tend to get hopeless when they go days without sleep, shocking right? I was then told that I would need to come in for a second sleep study to fit me for a CPAP mask, and then a second follow-up to get me set up with a machine. When questioned, the staff could not explain why I need not one but two more appointments to get a desperately-needed solution to my extreme insomnia, or why they couldn't schedule the second one any sooner than two months from now.
Last night I couldn't sleep again, so I googled up nine other sleep clinics in my area. The very first one I called this morning said "Oh yeah, we can get you in tommorrow. You'll have to bring a copy of your sleep study results from the other clinic and consult with the doc, but we should be able to get you an APAP machine directly afterward!"
I didn't think to ask whether I'll be able to walk out with a machine right there and then (probably not) or have to wait for it to be shipped. But I am SOOO relieved that this is happening asap, rather than two months from now!
