You all ride hard for the rest of the day, countryside passing behind you. As the sun finally sets and it becomes too difficult to see, you all halt and set up camp. Despite the days travel, you don't see anything different about the area you're camping in versus where you just left. Your night is uneventful and quiet, with no troubling dreams for anyone.

The next morning Ryland has you up before dawn, already packing his gear and getting ready to mount up. He can still feel that pull, tugging him northwest.

I will post another update shortly but I wanted to touch base real quick. I'm assuming Ryland is going to keep riding to where he wants to go. That being the case, is there anyone who won't be following Ryland? There was mention of seeing if something panned out soon but after a full day's travel, there is nothing exceptional that you've seen so far.

If you're all following Ryland that's fine, if some of you want to split off for Cairhien that's ok too. I just want to make sure I know before I post an update that assumes you're all together.

Jasmine is getting a bit nervous at the delay but wants her band to stay together.

Let us give it one more day. If nothing by then, perhaps we should head towards Cairhien.

her band? lol

Jed agrees with Jasmine, but pulls her aside a little later. "If after one more day we don't find what Ryland is looking for, we may want to consider moving on to Cairhien without him. We can agree on a place to meet up, of course." Jed doesn't want to split up, but he doesn't want to delay much more either. He will miss riding with his new, close friends.

Alrighty that was enough consensus for me. I'll have the next update posted soon-ish. It's gonna be a long one, still finishing it up.

m human, Andorian Asha'Man

wow, that must be some novel you are about to post, jonasty. LOL

Ryland sets out with the rest of you in tow, seemingly unconcerned with who does or does not decide to follow him. Pushing hard as before you cover a lot of ground yet by day's end there is still no sign of what has your companion so agitated. The night is quiet as you all catch some sleep.

The following day Ryland is up early and ready to go. Jasmine and Jed ready themselves to break off towards Cairhien but after a brief discussion they decide it might be best if they give their companion one more day. Setting off again the group rides northwest, always following Ryland's ground eating pace.

This cycle continues for four more days, each day Jasmine or Jed or someone else making the decision to break off towards Cairhien and yet the following morning some other reason comes up for them to stay. Maybe some of it was a desire to remain with those you trust in these troubled times but as the days wore on even this seemed to become a thin reason. Like you were all starting to feel this energy building, like you too could sense what Ryland moved towards.

Early on the fifth day you crest a small rise and pull your horses to a sudden stop. Stretching before you was an endless vista of gently rolling terrain like you had been riding through for the last week, tinder-dry brown grasses broken by the occasional hillock or small tree cluster. What hauls you up short is the massive battle taking place around a large hill less than a quarter of a mile away.

Tens of thousands of Aiel surround a ring of covered wagons, several of which are ablaze, near several stone wells and leafless trees atop the hill. Mounted men on horseback help hold off the mass of warriors as mounted women, clearly Aes Sedai, send immense balls of fire arcing into the enemy lines as Warders and other soldiers keep the Aiel at bay. You can see as well women in long skirts moving amongst the Aiel and balls of fire streaking from them to ignite within the ring of wagons. Lightning falls amongst both groups, causing the ground to erupt in bursts of light.

The scene is almost too much to take in and yet there is more. Not more than a few hundred yards from where you sit, you can see a third army racing towards the conflict, the banners of the Dragon Reborn fluttering over their ranks. Alongside those you also see the Eagle of Manetheren and the unknown wolf-headed banner. On the left and right flanks you see red-armored cavalry and plainly dressed archers while at the center ride Cairhienin lancers and thousands of Aiel formed into an immense wedge driving directly towards the ring of wagons and the back of the Aiel horde.

Fiallain:
You feel your teeth clench in anger as you quickly recognize the treacherous Shaido surround the wagons. As you see the other army charging down towards the conflict, you recognize various clans and septs that follow the Car'a'carn. You can see many of them wear the red headband recently adopted by those calling themselves siswai'aman, the spear of the dragon yet surprisingly as you look, you can see that all of them wear some form of this, whether a red headband or simply a piece of red fabric tied around an arm.

I think you all had an idea of where this was going. :-D

All of the female channelers can easily see hundreds of weaves surging across the battlefield. It's hard to count how many Aiel women are bathed in the glow of saidar but it's well over 200. And there are dozens of sisters in the camp at least. You also can see in the charging army women holding the sources, both Aes Sedai on horseback as well as Aiel Wise Ones on foot. You're too far to determine the actual weaves, outside of the obvious effects of a fireball or lightning bolt.

Everyone: What I need to know is what your character intends to do right now. I don't need super specific detail, I have a plan in place on how I want to handle things, I just want to know what your general idea is. We all know how this ends in the books so use a little common sense when planning out how you plan to react to this. You won't be cutting a one man (or woman) swathe through the Aiel to free Rand but there is plenty that can go on that will affect certain specific outcomes.

Once I have an idea of everyone's plan/thoughts, I will post an update along with how things may or may not work given what you do. I will of course answer any questions you have to help you determine what you want to do.

Jasper immediately embraces Saidan.

Hmmmm...I am thinking now would be a good time to link Jasper says, moving alongside Alathea and holding out his hand.

generality sense: Jasper will offer to link with anyone, but will maintain control of the link. Then ride down and begin to hammer into the Aiel with the power

Male Andoran Armsman 6

Jed will, of course, follow Jasmine in order to protect her. His own thought is to ally with those fighting for the Dragon. After all, he doesn't trust the White Tower Aes Sedai and one look at Fiallain should confirm that she does not support the Aiel that are here.

Jed looks to Jasmine with concern clearly written on his face. They have spent enough time together for her to know exactly what he would do. Jed would come to the aid of the Dragon Reborn if he were on his own, but he will follow Jasmine no matter what she decides.

Also, something to note. Jed wears a red sash on his arm as well, which he has worn in support of Queen Morgase since the unrest in Caemlyn.

Just a note. All any of you are aware of right now is that there is a mass of Aiel attacking a camp of Aes Sedai. You can see the third force is clearly devoted to the Dragon Reborn, and if Fiallain points it out you will be aware of the allegiance (aka bad guy-ness) of the Shaido, but that's it. None of you have any clue as to why the battle is happening or that Rand is captured, etc. You're not sure of which Tower the Aes Sedai in the camp or those riding with the Dragon's forces belong to either.

What it boils down to is that I'm just asking everyone to make sure you keep your book knowledge separate from what your characters know given what's happened so far in the game. Jed I know this comes after your post, it's not directly in response to it, what you wrote is fine. Didn't want you to think this was a criticism or a request to change anything.

Feel free to ask any questions about what you do or do not know, etc.

Jasmine looks at the pitched battle, a sense of grim purpose building within her. Looking at Jasper she says My talents in battle are not inconsiderable on my own Jasper. Though your power would increase we who are linked to you would be less than useless in that. We do not even have swords with which to protect ourselves. We stay together, fight as a team but we will be more effective separately.

Looking over at Jed she says with a wry grin Well my Gaidin, let's see if we can go get ourselves into a bit of trouble. With that she kicks her horse forward towards the melee.

Just FYI about the linking. Something I noticed in the battle with Serviana. Linking is good for when we are trying to do one big thing but in battle unless we are running low on weaves, linking is not a good idea. We are giving peoples entire actions every round so that one person can have an extra level of power. Alathea could do nothing in that fight with Serviana while she was linked with me.

m human, Andorian Asha'Man

That is a good point. ive got something to say about linking, but ill post in the discussion side.

Always she questions, always she denies. Jasper thinks angrily to himself, rage and anger flowing through his body. Looking at Alathea, he says And i suppose you too do not wish to link anymore, since an aes sedai has denied an Asha'man the privilege he was granting her?
He drops his hand, ending the link before she can say anything. enough of this. There is burning that needs to be done

Litheene looks at shock at the battle, destructive weaves of the power raging about, killing from both sides.
We ... we can't use the power as a weapon, unless to save our fellow sister. We need to get closer, in weaving range of the wagons. The Aes Sedai in the center could have warded the others away, if not for the Shaido wise ones. One of the things Damana learn is - in battle, concentrate on disabling the enemy channelers. Jasper, if you are willing to kill, ward off the Warriors. I'll try my best to protect my sisters, by stopping the wise ones from channeling.
Litheene breathes deeply, takes a hold of the angreal, and embraces the source.

Note we have one more female angreal for someone to use

Jed pulls out his sword as he rides.

Had a post ready, just editing it based on the new info above. Look for it in a few seconds.

The decision made, you all put heels to horses and charge across the grassy plain towards the mass of Shaido. Your path brings you close to the outskirts of the Dragon's forces, who simply give you grim nods when they see you before charging forward to impact against the wall of Aiel.

You're only a few yards away when suddenly the grass around you erupts with hundreds of wolves, all shapes and sizes, tan colored all the way to deepest black. The wolves bound forward into the Shaido, teeth ripping as they begin tearing into the Aiel around them. Your shock is only momentary as you're suddenly plunging into the Shaido as well.

------------

Each of you thought you knew what combat was, that you knew violence and killing but this is like nothing you've ever experienced. It was only moments after entering the melee that you quickly found yourselves separated, the press of bodies pushing you in various directions across the battlefield. It has felt like hours already but you know it's only been mere minutes since you committed yourselves to this battle.

Jasmine and Jed were side by side, sitting atop their horses and laying waste to those around them. Jed's steel eyed gaze fell on Shaido and his sword quickly followed suit. Jasmine was a Green sister in full glory, flames streaking from her hands to engulf the Aiel around her.

Jasper had an almost manic glee in his eye as he moved through the chaos, fires burning around him. This was what he had trained for, this was his purpose.

Alathea could only gape in continued horror as she defended herself from attack after attack. Weaves of Air knocked assailants aside as she struggled to keep the Aiel from overwhelming her. She had managed to avoid killing any of them yet but she wasn't sure how long she'd be able to hold back without risking her own life.

Litheene struggled to maintain her focus amongst the death around her. The carnage and violence of battle was causing her damane training to rush back and it was all she could do to resist the callings of Shari as she kept the Aiel back as best she could while maintaining her own sense of self.

Ryland tore into flesh around him with reckless determination, his horse long ago cut out from under him. Bodies fell to his sword and he could feel his face drawing back in a feral snarl as the blood continued to spray around him.

Fiallain felt herself slide back into her familiar role, fighting amongst her clan and sept mates against the honor-less Shaido. But there was a small part of her that knew it would never be truly the same as the spear in her hand was but one weapon she now had available to turn on the Shaido.

So the above is flavor to get us into the thick of it, no weaves have been used yet and no damage has been taken. Actual combat rules below. Please read thoroughly! Ask any questions you may have in the OOC thread.

Batlle of Dumai's Wells combat info:
So this will be run a little differently. I'm not doing a map as this is more free flow given everything going on around you.

Combat notes/rules:
1) Everyone but Jed and Jasmine are separated due to the chaos of the combat. Jed and Jasmine are only able to stay together because of the Warder bond allowing them to pinpoint each other.

2) To simplify things, PC's all are top of Init order, then the mob of Shaido go. Because you're all separate, it doesn't really matter who goes when between the group of you. Once all PC's have posted (or enough time has passed to move things on) I will then post the Shaido round info.

3) Combat will not be standard based on the RPG, I want this to feel more fluid. Instead of rolling thousands of attack rolls against you and clogging things down, each PC will simply suffer 1 hit (and corresponding damage roll) from a Shaido on the enemy's turn. I will also roll percentile for this, with a 5% chance that it is a crit (and thus extra damage). This represents that no matter how good you are or high level, you will be hit by sheer luck given the number of enemies.

4) Related to the being hit comment of #3, every PC is considered to be in melee constantly starting at the beginning of your Round 1 turn. So for the channelers with weaves or anyone wanting to make a ranged attack, you will need to take this into account via Concentration checks, etc. Characters may skip their turn (or think of it as spending a full round action) to "clear a space around themselves", which will allow them to be out of melee for their next turn's actions. In this same vein, you will always have a target within either melee or short range of you, at your discretion. It is a sea of enemies!

5) I don't want anyone to think that this will boil down to a series of dice rolls and that's it. Depending on what you do on your turn, it will directly impact the overall flow of combat and the ultimate outcome at the end. Even if all you're doing is swinging a sword, this will still impact the game depending on how you swing it. Get creative with your posts and ideas and it will further reflect at the end of this.

6) Related to #5, when I post the round updates, make sure to read them thoroughly as I may or may not throw specific challenges or ideas at specific people. While I'm trying to simplify things with this, I also don't want this to be boring either so I might spice it up now and then.

Please post your Round 1 actions when you can. Also, the 4 ladies may each include a Weavesight check in their Round 1 posts.

Alathea scowls at Jasper's rude dismissal, but says nothing. If I must kill today, I would have rather done so by lending my power to another than doing it myself. Immediately after the thought, she's struck by the absurdity of it. Light! To feel more comfortable surrendering myself to a madman than to defend myself? What has happened to me?

Staring in horror at the battle before her, Alathea does not know what to do. Jasper claims that these madmen fight for the Dragon Reborn, and Fiallain says that these Shaido are the enemy. Ryland is here because of these wolves, although I do not understand why. Which is the right side? But despite her uncertainty, there is one group that she trusts in even if she's uncertain of their reason for involvement. The Aes Sedai must be protected, yes? I must have faith in them! With her dueling knife in hand, she opens herself to the One Power and sets off towards the besieged Sisters.

Alathea will attempt to fight her way close to the Aes Sedai and assist them as she's able. While she's willing to use non-lethal and lethal force on anyone who threatens them, she's especially focused on the threat of rival channelers. Hence, she will attempt to Shield or otherwise incapacitate (even kill if absolutely necessary) any channelers, whether male or female, Aiel or otherwise, who threaten the Aes Sedai as her first priority. If no channelers threaten, she'll lend her assistance by dealing with mundane threats.

Gonna wait for Jed before updating. Also Jasper you're description for the flame sword while running up is fine, similarly I would assume that everyone (Fiallain) had embraced the Source well before charging into battle. That being the case, Jasper you have a Round 1 action to take.

Notes:
Jasmine - Ward against people is fine but just a heads up, you will be trapping a number of Shaido inside the ward with you. Essentially I know why you're using it and what you're trying to accomplish but the weave doesn't push out enemies when you cast it so it will not be giving you the effect you're looking for. This isn't to say that the entire 25 foot radius of the dome will be filled wall to wall with Aiel in every space, but ultimately it won't give you any breathing room to not have to worry about attacks which is what I think you were going for with this action. Maybe after a number of rounds, you and Jed could clear enough out that you could have some space but not right now. That being the case, feel free to adjust your Round 1 action if you'd like.
Alathea - Could you clarify which Aes Sedai you are attempting to reach? There are Aes Sedai in the thick of battle right now and there are also the ones in the wagon ring. Also, I need you to be more specific with what your Round 1 action is, if you intend to do something. As the combat progresses, I will be giving more specific scenarios to some people but when I don't I'm leaving it to PC's to describe what they do. As an example based on what you said, look at Litheene's proposed Round 1. As your posting is right now, it essentially boils down to you're readying an action for Round 1, as I read it.

As he is closing in on the ring, Jasper spots a large wall of mounted horsemen charging into the line. He is suddenly reminded of a day of training at the tower
No matter how strong you are, how quick you are with the power, a single blow can drop you if you don't see it coming
Smiling at that hard lesson learned, Jasper angles his charge to fall in behind the wall of calvary as the drive deep into the shaido.

Round 1:
HP 78/78, AC 23

Jed has only one thought in his mind during the carnage of battle. Nothing else matters. He thinks nothing of cutting down the Aiel who attack him, nothing of the blood on his sword, and nothing of lightning and fire raining around him. He has but one purpose. Protect Jasmine!

Jasmine and Jed work together as if they have been doing this all their life. As Jasmine weaves, invisible to Jed's eyes, he puts himself between her and the nearest Shaido to attack. It is a constant game, where he must shift his feet to dodge a weapon in such a way that it does not come close to injuring Jasmine.

Assuming Jasmine does not change her action:
Almost subconsciously, Jed notices that Aiel further from Jasmine and Jed are suddenly no longer advancing. He takes this opportunity to try and clear out the area nearby, to give Jasmine the break she needs to concentrate.

Attack #1: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (10) + 12 = 22
Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Attack #2: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Crit Confirm: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Crit damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

Jed sees two Shaido coming for Jasmine, their spearheads glinting in the sunlight as they seek to eliminate an Aes Sedai threat. But they have to get through the heavily armored Gaidin first. Jed steps directly in front of the Shaido, his sword flashing. The first Shaido is slashed across the shoulder as he attempts to duck his blow. The gash is deep. Without pausing to see if the Aiel falls to ground unconscious, Jed pulls his sword back and thrusts it deep into the other Shaido's stomach. Only seconds have passed, and more Aiel press in.

Mechanics: Jed will 5-foot step each round, to place himself in front of any Aiel threatening Jasmine. He will use a full-round action to make both of his attacks, each on a different Shaido.

Jed can make two Attacks of Opportunity each round if they are provoked. Please just take them for me, if you wish, Jonasty.

Ok fair enough. Change it to 10' radius then so there should be many less aiel to have to worry about while still giving me enough room to work in. BTW I didn't mention before but I'm tying it off as soon as its done.

Sorry Jonasty, I'd forgotten about the two groups of Aes Sedai being at the battle. I remembered about the Loyalists, but not that the Rebels had been there as well.

Alathea will fight towards the Aes Sedai in the wagon ring, as (or so I remember) they seem to be the ones under siege. To amend my previous post, Alathea will NOT challenge an Aes Sedai, even if said Aes Sedai is in battle with another Aes Sedai.

As for round one, Alathea will weave a Shield at level 5 (using a level 4 weave but gaining the benefit of having all required Affinities) and using it against the nearest rival channeler. This'll only work against opponents of level 5 if female, level 4 if male, and the Will save DC to negate it is 21.

Concentration check to weave defensively, DC 20 needed: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13...let's hope she doesn't get hit too badly...

AoO on Alathea. I will handle AoO's with actual attack rolls, not going to penalize you guys with auto damage on these. Update coming momentarily.

AoO: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16, damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Alathea's Concentration to get Round 1 weave off despite damage: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30

Channelers, you've been good when making Concentration checks to include a DC for it. If you fail that check, go ahead and also include the second one to cast the weave anyways. If the damage is low enough, you might still get it off. (Granted as I Crit Alathea's roll for this above, you might want me to do it lol.)

Aiel spears slash and weaves errupt around you as the fighting continues on. Blood sprays in different directions as the battle rages.

Fiallain: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4, 5% crit chance 1d100 ⇒ 94

Litheene: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4, 5% crit chance 1d100 ⇒ 11

Litheene, you have learned the weave Cast Off. (Under the Dragon's Banner netbook.)

Reminder: Please read the entire post so you don't miss anything. Example, as Litheene was the only one to include the asked for Weavesight check, she was the only one to learn a new weave during Round 1.

Round 2 Battle Update

Ryland gouges a deep wound into one of the skirted Aiel women. Snarling at you, she grips you in iron bands of Air and you can feel your ribs begin to crack. As you hang there, a large brown wolf leaps at the woman, teeth sinking into her arm. Suddenly you're released as a gout of flame burns the wolf, the stink of roasting hair filling the air.

Jasper moves through the carnage, flames pouring into the people around him. As he raises his hand to launch another fireball, he can feel a razor sharp presence slice through his weave before it has a chance to form. Head on a swivel, he spots a Wise One staring at him in horror. Suddenly he can feel her attempting to throw a Shield over his connection to saidin but he manages to shrug it off before advancing towards her.

The carnage spreads around the rest of you, people dying left and right. And there appears to be no end in sight.

Just to remind everyone. If your character or what's happening around them isn't specifically mentioned in the update above, I'm expecting you to get as creative as you'd like with your round post. Once again, within reason. If I do give you a hook, you by no means have to take it. Ryland could completely ignore the Wise One in his next post if he wants.

Also to clarify, there will be lots of flavor in my battle updates but the only actual effects on you as PC's will be handled in the Shaido's end of Round actions. So as above, I describe Jasper fighting off a Shield from a Wise One and Ryland being hurt by a weave. If I actually post a mechanical action in the Shaido turn update, that's when it would actually impact them directly.

Notes going into Round 2:
Jasmine - Ward against People is a full round action. Tying off a weave is a Move action. So part of your Round 2 action will be a move action to tie off the weave. I bring this up because you took the auto damage at the end of round 1, so make sure you make a Concentration check at the start of Round 2 to hold the weave long enough to then tie it off. Obviously if you fail, then there's nothing to tie off and you've got your full Round 2 action available.

Also I've updated the Campaign Info tab with the current status of the party, ignoring the Init score obviosuly. Please keep in mind that this is what I will go off of when making an DM calls so if I have your HP or weaves wrong, be sure to speak up sooner rather than later.

All of the above being said, please post your Round 2 actions now. The ladies may once again give me a Weavesight check as part of their Round 2 posts.

Round 2
HP: 76/78

Attack 1: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (10) + 12 = 22
Damage 1: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Intimidate: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
Attack 2: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
Damage 2: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7

As Jed pulls his now bloody sword out of the Aiel's stomach, his peripheral vision alerts him to a spear thrust at Jasmine. He is too late to block the attack, and while he is focused on that Aiel, another thrusts a spear his way. Time slows down, and Jed twists his shoulder, trying to maneuver out of the way, but his armor slows him down and spear grazes his neck. The wound isn't deep, but it stings.

Jed swings his sword in a wide arc and connects with the Shaido's chest, causing the Aiel to fall backwards, clutching himself in pain and falling unconscious. Jed turns his attention back towards the man who attacked and injured Jasmine. His face contorts rage and he screams a guttural yell at the Shaido, who despite his Aiel heritage, freezes in place in fear. Jed uses this opportunity to end the man's life with a powerful blow to the neck.

I know that technically intimidating an opponent is a standard action, but I thought I'd use it for some flavor anyway. Mechanically, it did absolutely nothing, except waste a good roll I suppose. Still, it makes for a more interesting description.

Oh, and DM, Jed's HP is 78 total now, since we leveled up before (13 HP/level, 10 from armsman and 3 from CON). So he should be at 76/78 at the moment.

Jed good catch on the HP, I had not updated the campaign info section with the party's new HP from the level up. This is all set now although Jasmine based on what I had, it doesn't look like you gave yourself your 6th level hit points. I had you at 32 HP originally and then when I went in to adjust the scores for everyone, your sheet still lists at 32. I think you're missing some. Please adjust and let me know your new total.

As far as weaves available and used, I took those numbers directly from people's updates, so those I know are current.

Also Jed, perfectly fine with the Intimidate. This combat is obviously more flavor than crunch in the long run so something minor like that is cool and adds to the story. Extra attack routines and the like will of course be frowned upon. ;-)

Male Andoran Armsman 6

Speaking of extra attack routines... I fixed the second attack. It was originally posted with the full +12, but I've edited the post to correct it to +7. Probably doesn't affect too much, though, but just in case.

Feeling the sharp twang from his weave being cut, Jasper locks his gaze onto the wise one for a brief moment. Thoughts of destroying the woman flicker across the Void, but do not stick. better targets await farther ahead the thought flows in and around his mind, taking hold.
Looking past the woman, Jasper spies an Aiel with a spear through its midsection, its own spear slipping from its grasp. A simple weave of air catches the spear and sends it at the back of the wise one.
