ToyFair (Part 2)

Friday, February 27, 2015

I've been in the office only 5 days since returning from my ToyFair trip, but that time has gone by like a flash. When I think back to my time at ToyFair, it seems like only yesterday that I was checking out the latest action figures, playsets, statues, and other cool stuff on display. And I'm especially pleased that this year, we had a nice display of Pathfinder items to show off at the show, as well.

Last Friday, I showed off a few of my personal camera-phone photos of upcoming Pathfinder Battles figures from our friends and partners at WizKids. WizKids had plenty of Pathfinder on display, from the first three Iconic Heroes sets to about a third of June's Dungeons Deep set.

Here are a few more shots from their booth. These are production-run versions of these figures, so expect the finals to look pretty much exactly like this.

Let's start by focusing on a few shots of figures from the Iconic Heroes boxed sets.

This is Harsk, Dwarf Ranger from Iconic Heroes Set #2. Check out his eye for a good sense of the level of detail WizKids is going to to make sure these sets are of the finest quality possible. It took all of my willpower not to simply walk away with this figure.

The phone I was using focused a bit strangely in these photos, but I wanted to include them anyway for historical reasons. Our very first WizKids release, Beginner Box Heroes featured a Kyra figure that blew away the expectations of collectors (and the Paizo staff) with the quality of design work, in particular on Kyra's very detailed cloak. Here's the new version, and I think the detail here is even more impressive. Kyra, Human Cleric also appears in Iconic Heroes Set #2.

Next up is Amiri, Human Barbarian. WizKids did an amazing job on all of the little details on this figure, and she looks fantastic. I'm also quite partial to Amiri because, while I was at ToyFair, the first issue of the new Pathfinder Origins comic series released in comic shops, and Amiri is the special guest star. I wrote Pathfinder Origins #1, and hope you guys have had a chance to check it out. Our favorite barbarian more than accounts for herself, that's for sure! Amiri is also in Iconic Heroes Set #2.

Here we have another denizen of Iconic Heroes Set #2, Ezren, Human Wizard. Great, great detail work on this figure.

Let's move on to Iconic Heroes Set #3, with a look at Damiel, Elf Alchemist. I confess this is not the sharpest photo in the world, but it gives a good sense of the level of amazing detail WizKids is putting into these figures. I can't wait to add Damiel to my personal collection.

Next up is Balazar, Gnome Summoner. For such a cute little guy, his miniature packs a ton of awesome details. Balazar is included in Iconic Heroes Set #3.

Balazar the summoner is lost without his eidolon, Padrig. Here he is from front to back. Padrig comes in Iconic Heroes Set #3.

Let's move on to Dungeons Deep, which is rapidly shaping up to be one of my favorite sets in the line, with tons of high-utility figures. One of my favorites is the Giant Crawling Hand, a Medium undead monstrosity just waiting to slide some (rotting) skin with your player characters. I'm thrilled that the Hand is a common figure, as I can't wait to give my player characters a "round of applause" for their tireless heroism.

Every GM needs a great Griffon figure, and this set gave me the perfect opportunity to slip one into Pathfinder Battles. The Griffon is a Large, uncommon figure.

Last up this week is the Veiled Master, a variant aboleth that first appeared in my Paizo-staff "Kings of Absalom" in-office campaign, where they were revealed to have been heavily involved in the last days and ultimate fall of the ancient Empire of Azlant. They subsequently appeared in the Inner Sea Bestiary, and you can expect to see them again in the not too distant future. The Veiled Master looks fantastic in plastic. It's a Large, rare figure with tons of cool details.

And that's it for this week, and for my storehouse of ToyFair images. Check back in this space next week for more cool reveals for upcoming Pathfinder Battles releases!

wow. that veiled master mini is too sweet. Leaps and bounds over the slime mage from the old dnd mini sets. definitely a fave from this newest set.

I might be biased, but I am so excited for that Balazar mini to finally hit the office.

Kyra is not wearing a cloak, it is an abba.

I am guessing AP after Hell's Rebels. Maybe having something to do with those 13 eyeless krakens.

Or in the Pathfinder comics. One already appeared but got away... ;-)

But yeah with a miniature coming out in june it could appear somewhere.

At CR 14 it could appear in book 4 or 5 of "Hell´s Rebels"...

Awesome....finally a aboleth!!!! and i really don't care if its a variant!!! Pazio that's why i love you guys.......breaking new ground and sneaking....ok....adding in the old and classic. Gary G would have smiled. Definitely adding a few of these bad boys to my collection..... i don't like the whole set idea....but its awesome to be able to pick and choose. to each their own

allows one to flush out the wandering monster tables....especially when u meet several.

PS
Keep up the big dragon thing.....and little ones too.

Iconics are looking good, love the detail on a iris face. Balazar looks good but his face seems a little blobby, size I imagine. Rest of the detail on him is excellent.

As for dungeon deep, that crawling hand is excellent. The bone and wiggling vessel at the top are very nice additions, as I've said before. My question is what is the weird ligament like piece between the thumb and finger, seems oddly out of place, almost like a piece of flashing. Of course it may the angle but I suspect it shouldn't be there on a hand.

Still not sold on the griffon, shame since its uncommon so I'll end up with 3-4. May be better in hand but those "eagle" feet just aren't working for me. Of course the veiled master more than makes up for it.

Any news on other plastic goodies coming up? Any plans for packs other than the iconics? I'm assuming no word on the future of the huges?

Love this set.... May actually consider buying a few random packs again....... (Usually I just order individual mini's as most of the sets don't appeal to me.... or include too many miniatures I can't use as I am not playing pathfinder anymore..... just other RPGs).

These look great.

I just got my Iconics #1 set in the mail yesterday and they are amazing, even in the face. Anybody concerned about the angle or the way these look in the photos shouldn't fret. In hand they look amazing, and the faces are all spectacular.

I remember somebody mentioned they were concerned about the Sorceress, but in hand she looks just wonderful. For me the true test was Lini, as I was let down by her last miniature. But she looks great, face detail and all. In truth, I'm not sure it's possible to get any better on such small pieces of plastic.

Even though my enthusiasm is based just on the first Iconics release, it's reasonable to assume the quality will carry over to the others. And if anybody was on the fence of buying them, I definitely suggest going for it.

I'm feeling ill tonight, so I thought I'd write some reviews on some recently received Pathfinder products. I just posted my review on the Iconics Set #1 and I hope it helps anyone currently on the fence. I'm looking forward to reading reviews from fellow gamers to see if we are on the same wavelength regarding how we feel about the set.

Spoiler Alert: I gave it five stars.

Also, I can't stress enough how excited I am for this Dungeons Deep set! And for the Iconics line as a whole!

I know not of what you speak. There are no such thing as veiled masters, all is normal. Return to your everyday life.

Is the Iconics Set #2 still expected to drop this month? Do we know a street date yet for the item?

Looks neat. That is from D&D's Icons of the Realm set 3, slated for August. The only Pathfinder miniatures coming at the end of March is the Iconic Heroes set 2.

I don't know if Marco's post was a response to mine, but I do thank you for the information.

I should have been more specific in my query. Do we know the official street date of the Pathfinder Battles Iconics #2 release?

I was wondering if we have an official date yet, as I can't seem to find it anywhere. I ordered two of them (and two of the Iconic Heroes #1) from a different retailer, but due to the delay on the first release, the entire order won't ship until Set 2 is available. I've got a new campaign starting the first week of April, and one of my players is hoping to have Harsk in hand.

The extended delay on the order caused me to purchase a third set of the first release in the series (Iconic Heroes #1) so I could get it within a day or two of its release. It was important to me to clarify the quality of the line so that I could justify further purchases down the road. Based on how much I love the first set, I'll be purchasing at least one of each and every set in this line.

This is true. Last I heard, it was estimated that ports would be caught up in a few weeks, though.
