Pathfinder Battles Preview: Gray Days

Friday, October 19, 2012

The Halloween season is about more than just scares. Here in Seattle, the approach of Halloween means the end of nice weather and a months-long descent into "the gray," a series of cloudy, rainy, dreary days often strung together 40 or 50 at a time. It's not the dreariness that gets you, or the dampness. It's the monotony of it all. The same day, every day, for days and days and days and days (can you tell I just got back from a vacation?). But Halloween is around the corner to break up the gloom, and it does so with both tricks AND treats.

This week, I'm focusing on a couple of the "treats" in the upcoming Shattered Star set of Pathfinder Battles prepainted miniatures due to hit stores and subscribers in January. And since it's gray outside, I thought I'd stick to a "gray" theme.

Specifically, I'm talking about the Gray Maidens.

The Gray Maidens first appeared during the Curse of the Crimson Throne Adventure Path, our second-ever Pathfinder campaign. Stationed in the Varisian city of Korvosa, the Gray Maidens were the personal bodyguard of Queen Ileosa, and became heavily embroiled in the chaos and machinations that fueled that campaign.

When the Shattered Star Adventure Path set out to revisit Varisia, we knew we wanted to include the Gray Maidens from the start. We liked their design enough that we put it on the back cover of the Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook, after all, so it was only a matter of time before we'd revisit them in an Adventure Path.

And make prepainted miniatures of them, of course.

The figure pictured above is the rank-and-file Gray Maiden. She works perfectly in concert with the Shattered Star or Curse of the Crimson Throne campaigns, and we've put her at the uncommon rarity so it's relatively easy to build up a bunch of them. Not playing either of those Pathfinder Adventure Paths? Not to worry, this figure is cool enough to work for any female warrior in full plate, including a player character.

Speaking of character, we've had good luck so far including multiple types of the same "troop" in previous Pathfinder Battles sets, and the Shattered Star set is no exception. A squad of Gray Maidens needs leadership, so the set also includes the Gray Maiden Commander.

Pictured above is Oriana, leader of the Gray Maiden contingent encountered in the second Shattered Star adventure, "Curse of the Lady's Light". She's got some nasty scars on her face and a real chip on her shoulder, and your player characters are going to love hating her.

And what better way to focus that hate than a gorgeous prepainted figure placed right in the middle of your gaming table?

The Gray Maidens are coming your way in January, complete with the rest of the Shattered Star set. We're thrilled with the way these figures came out, and I continue to be extremely excited about the level of quality WizKids has put into this set.

But I've got days and days of gray Seattle skies ahead of me, and things are bound to get a bit gloomier between now and Halloween.

In fact, I think the horror around here is about to get downright cosmic.

Return here in seven days for unknowable horrors from the edge of the cosmos that man was never meant to experience (but which will look GREAT on your gaming table!).

Trick or treat!

Yeah I heard "The Grey" is why all the emo vampires live in Washington. They can be out all day and avoid being sparkly. :)

Ok seriously now. Grey Maidens are awesome. Love both minis.

I was really hoping you would do minis from older Adventure Paths. If you never plan on a Crimson Throne set...I'll settle for minis from the path sprinkled throughout other sets.

They are both awesome. I really dig Oriana holding her helmet under her arm.

Thumbs up bigtime this week.

Next week is Lovecraft stuff? YAY!!

Liberty's Edge

These are Awesome.

Also, I wouldn't mind another behind the scenes post soon.

Don't hate.

Spoiler:
Love.

Y'know, that 'unknowable horrors from the edge of the cosmos that man was never meant to experience (but which will look GREAT on your gaming table!)' line would make for a good blurb for the box or on a poster or something.

Liberty's Edge

Wow. These are fantastic. Seriously, the one on top is one of my new favorites of all time for pre-painted. Nice simple paint job but with an awesome dynamic pose.

...and more Lovecraft stuff? I'll be getting this whole set it looks like.

WOOT! I was hoping this set would have Gray Maidens!

Erik Mona, colossal tease.

Or perhaps I should say, cosmic tease.

Thanks again for making matching miniatures. The Town Guard in the first set was great. And these Gray Maidens look good together too. I agree about the helmet under arm on Oriana looking good. Is that an emblem or runes on the sword, or is it just shadows? Makers marks are common to well made weapons, but you don't see them on miniatures. I also like her well defined scar and short spiky hair. She looks formidable. Nice!

These look awesome!

I liek these quite a bit. Ihope I get more then a couple in my case.

These look great, though I would love to see the gray maiden from a few other angles to judge the lean. Doubly(?) fantastic for CotCT players asd well. Hopefully we will see some other poses in future sets to broaden the range - like the city watch in H&M. The fact that they have a unfied appearance is massive plus for their design. The level of detail in the Oriana figure aloneis exceptional. Shattered Star just keeps getting better, and that just has to continue into next week -unknowable horrors from the edge of the cosmos- if the Gug is any indication these will be mind-blowing!

I should have held back the gug for extra-ultra-head-explosiveness in next week's cosmic horror preview, but I just couldn't resist leaking that one as soon as (in)humanly possible.

Next week's creatures are awesome, but the gug stands on a very tall pedestal for me for so many reasons you won't appreciate until you hold him. I can't reveal everything in these pictures. The gug's tongue and mouth has a _sheen_ to it, thanks to an opalescent coat in the wet parts. The drybrushing on his shag is amazing. And he stands taller than an action figure. Next week's miniatures are also really great, but the gug is one of those figures that I look at and can't believe we tricked someone into making it for us. The credit all goes to WizKids, who did a great job, but it is so awesome I almost feel like we got away with something.

Anyway, you'll have to see for yourselves, I guess. January is only weeks away!

Too many weeks!! I don't doubt the Gug is hard to live up to - in my mind I upscale the quality of what I'm looking at simply because the pictures can rarely do justice to the final in hand product. It the variety of cosmic lovecraftiness(?) that has me excited.

is next week monster a spawn of yog sothoth from the carrion hill that would be nice but hard to design

I don't think Uncommon will provide enough of these maidens! I'm really looking forward to this entire set, nothing has disappointed so far.

Glad to hear it, Berk! There's more awesome stuff to come!

I so want this.. my PFS 'GM credit' fighter will fit perfectly on it.

I like both of them! I'll get only one of the Gray Maiden, though, because she's left handed. I can't see units of left handed warriors being all that common.

It's so when the PCs almost have them beat, they start to smile and when the PCs ask why, they can say, "Because I know something you don't know. I ... am not left-handed." :D

I am always fascinated how many figures end up left handed. Even some that the art shows as right handed. But if the figure is nice, I deal with it.

Grand Lodge

Wouldn't it make sense from an old wive's tale that the Gray Maidens would follow a Left-Handed path. ;)

In all seriousness though, I for one would like a full squad of these.

Cheers,

My theory is that the artist is probably left-handed and intuitively draws the subject that way, and that Paizo rightly wants a certain number of left-handed minis to accomodate those wanting left handed pc/npc figures.

Or it could be that sculpters and artists sometimes forget the mirror effect. I could be wrong of course.

As for the figures, I have bought way too many to think this issue really bugs m. But I do notice it.

Can w4e lay off the Leftie abuse? Frankly I'm happy to have left handed minis.

(Aside, I was overjoyed when I got Thunderstrike from the Avengers Heroclix and he was left handed.)

No abuse intended. Left handed, right handed, I just am glad to get great figures that are prepainted at a reasonable price. :-)

But having one lefty mini in a case is like seating a single lefty at the dinner table. Unless you strategically place her, everyone starts bumping elbows! ;)
