Dancing with a Monster in the Pale Moonlight

Wednesday, December 22, 2010

Early last year a promise was made, a promise to those GMs who go beyond the call of duty. The promise was a special scenario, exclusive to 4-star Game Masters and Venture-Captains. Hints were dropped by Mark Moreland back in October that something special was coming, and now I can tell you that the special 4-star GM scenario will be released in January and enjoyed worldwide soon after.

"The Midnight Mauler," a Tier 1–7 scenario written by the always amazing Crystal Frasier, sends members of the Pathfinder Society to the former crown jewel of Ustalav's royal courts, the decaying city of Ardis. Tasked by the Society to look into the fate of Absalom's former Master of Blades Vonran Vilk, what they find will lead to exploration, diplomacy, murder, haunted pasts, and tragic love. Can the PCs discover the identity of the Midnight Mauler before it kills again? Find out in 2011!

Maybe I'm wrong in my understanding here, but don't you have to be a venture captain or 4 star gm to PLAY these games (for now)? You'll have that many there?

The Exchange 5/5

The Midnight Mauler will also be available at the following conventions:

BASHCon (Toledo, OH) February 18-20
GryphCon (Guelph, Ontario) March 4-6
Who's Yer Con? (Indianapolis, IN) March 11-13
Marmalade Dog (Kalamazoo, MI) April 15-17

I'm positive there will be more added to this list soon :)
If they twist my arm, I can run a table at GamiCon Upsilon (Iowa City, IA) February 11-13 if the scenario is released soon enough.

No, you have to be a Venture Captain or 4 star DM to RUN these games. There are only about 20 people currently who fit into that category so pickings would be slim if that were the case. :) Anyone can play them.

Only a VC or a 4-star GM may RUN this scenario for any players who wish to play it. It is meant to be a draw since you either have to get to 4 stars to have access to run it for your community or you have to travel to a convention to find it.

I guess this just doesn't seem like much of a GM bonus to me then. I LOVE running, but the reward of more running just seems a little odd. *shrug* To each their own.

I'm one of approximately 20 people in the entire world who can run this event. That seems pretty neat to me.

One of my complaints (you may notice I have high expectations) about PFS has been the lack of a 'hook' to bring players to conventions. If players always remain sequestered in their own circles and never mix, it defeats the purpose of an organized play campaign. Back in the days of Living Greyhawk (and perhaps LC, I wasn't involved in the RPGA then) there was a vibrant community and a convention schedule to die for. That all dried up when LG was killed. I'm glad to see there's something we as organizers can use to draw players to our public events. "The Year of the Shadow Lodge" was nice, but with "The Midnight Mauler" and future exclusives we can give players more reasons to circulate and cross-pollenate. That's my perspective.

I realize that there's nothing preventing a VC or 4-star GM from just running "The Midnight Mauler" as a private home game for his or her friends. You won't see that in Michigan though. (It's because you don't have any friends Kyle)

If it's released early enough in January, I might be able to run it at Arcanacon, but I suspect as Pathfinder Society scenarios are usually released in the last week of the month, Conquest will likely be the first opportunity to feature Midnight Mauler in Melbourne, Australia.

Arcanacon 2011 Melbourne
Weekend before Australia Day
Thursday 20th January - Sunday 23rd January, 2011
(note: neither Thursday or Friday are public holidays, so book your work leave now!)

Collingwood College, Hoddle Street, Collingwood
brief walk from the Collingwood Train Station
opposite Collingwood Town Hall

[ Arcanacon 2011 event page | Arcanacon 2011 website ] (Registrations now open!)

Conquest 2011 Melbourne
Easter long weekend
Friday 22nd April to Monday 25th April, 2011

Melbourne High School, South Yarra

As Doug said above, I plan to run this at GryphCon in March, for the "Canadian Convention Premiere" :)

OK, only 4-star GMs can run it official as PFS game, cool beans, but will the scenario be available for general purchase ? I am asking because Crystal is rapidly becoming my favourite scenario writer :)

I believe the plan is to make it available only to venture captains and 4/5 star GMs for about a year, and then release it to be purchased for general play, later?

My understanding is it will only be available to 4 star GMs and Venture Captains for 12 months. After that, it will be made available for the public.

Ya know, if there was to be enough of an upsurge in PFS to justify another Venture-Captain.... :)

I also look at it as a bonus for the stores and clubs that are most supportive of PFS.

I know that in my area, I will be happy to run the scenario for those groups that have been most rabidly playing and reporting sessions.

Exactly!

You know, I'd love to run Midnight Mauler for Brisbane and Sydney players too (not forgetting Adelaide, Canberra, Darwin, Hobart, Perth players), but I can't see an opportunity of flying there in the very near future. However, if they had their own 4-star GMs ...

CavalierCon has been dead since I started playing with the local club (coincidentally the Omaha Cavaliers). The next real gaming convention here is in October. I may try to snag this from you at Origins if I go again :P We have been roughly talking about hosting a pure gaming con in the spring area, but we're at least a year out on that.

Not really an issue for us locally as we still have many modules to go before we get close to running low.

How's this for a blurb?

PFS# 2-VC/4* The Midnight Mauler (PRPG)

Tasked by the Society to look into the fate of Absalom's former Master of Blades Vonran Vilk, you must travel to the former crown jewel of Ustalav's royal courts, the decaying city of Ardis. What you discover will lead to exploration, diplomacy, murder, haunted pasts, and tragic love. Can the you discover the identity of the Midnight Mauler before it kills again?

"The Midnight Mauler" is exclusively available to the 4-Star GMs and Venture-Captains of the Pathfinder Society to run for their lucky players and will not be released to the general community until XX-XX-XXXX.

Written by Crystal Frasier

This product is a Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for 1st to 7th level characters (Tiers: 1-2, 3-4 and 6-7). This scenario is designed for play in Pathfinder Society Organized Play, but can easily be adapted for use with any world. Only available to Venture Captains and 4-star GMs? That sucks.

Put up another blog next year when it's available for general consumption. Maybe if I'm still into PFS, I can get excited about it then.

Understand that it was an unofficial blurb attempt. If you want to play it, that can be arranged. If you want to GM it for your friends, either freeze yourself in the Rocky Mountains and have Butters thaw you out next year, or get busy GMing Society scenarios ;)

Very cool,

Hopefully Art will be able to be at Dreamation or Dexcon and maybe GM this?

You're in Huntsville, AL. Come up to Chattanooga on Feb 18-20 and play it at Con Nooga. I am also debating going to MobiCon in May in Mobile, AL. No guarantees about Mobile yet but I am running 7 tables of it at Con Nooga.

Shadow Lodge

I also plan on running this at Dragonflight 2011 in August of next year, as well as prior to that with a few local groups. This aught to be a fun one :)

Really, you can't be excited about the rewards that others are receiving for their hard work and dedication. I'm not impressed. Congratulations to all of the VC and 4 Star DM's. You deserve even more than this but it is a fine start.

Are there any French players living close to Calais? The Sunrise Lodge UK is just across from Calais and maybe if a group of French Pathfinders comes over I could entice Wintergreen to come down and visit the Sunrise Lodge. Foot passenger tickets are pretty cheap (or take a whole car load).

A multicultural Exchange program ...

Alternativly - as Wintergreen said - Conception might be your best chance - or Auke in the Netherlands.
