An idea that I am kicking around.
3-5 players, each would start as an NPC class, warrior, expert or adept (though if people wanted commoner or aristocrat go for it) They would play that to start, and would level up to 1 at which point they would choose a PC class. From then on they would pick whatever class they wanted at each level, but it would always be Gestalted with the original NPC class.
Stats would be a choice of either a 15pt buy or roll 4d6 drop lowest BUT you do not get to place them wherever you want so it would look like this
STR 4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 6, 4) = 13
DEX 4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 1, 5) = 18
CON 4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 3, 2) = 10
INT 4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 2, 3) = 12
WIS 4d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 2, 1) = 6
CHA 4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 2, 1) = 11
Drop lowest of each
Those who went Adept would be allowed to choose what casting stat, but choosing INT or CHA would result in casting failure chance with armor.
The rough idea is drafted into an army. You would start with no gear, and part of the recruitment would be an in character interview, if you will. Based on answers a set of gear would be assigned.
Finally I would attempt to balance characters slightly by awarding traits, so someone that rolled unbelieveably well would have 2 traits, others would have up to 4.
I am still pondering this but was curious if anyone would be interested at all. I think it could be lots of fun.

I am confused on the Gestalt thing. (isn't that a 3.5 thing with two classes at the same time?
are to advance in both a PC class and an NPC class at te same time? how does that work.
either way this does seem rather interesting. a varient on the KIds growing up campaign that started not to long ago.

not sure where Gestalt started Edward. Basically the idea is at each level you get whatever the better ability is.
So if you were warrior/Wizard
At level 1 you would take the Warrior HP and BAB and Fort save (not looking at it so that might be wrong); then you would get the saves that the wizard has that are good, and the spell casting. and bonus feat etc.
Does that make sense?
Sorry been running myself ragged the past few days so might now be very clear in my explanation.
Varin you might now want to, after the sad 2 days Varin has been having :)
But all can apply. I am still bouncing this around in my head. But if enough are interested I will probably give it a whirl.
Also taking recomendations of a good place to set it. Somewhere that having all the basic races around makes sense, and that having somekind of war going on also makes sense. (Not this wouldn't mean that other races weren't possible, just trying to put this together in my wee little brain)

I think I am going to run this, at least as a trial and see if it has legs. If so I will expand it to a full campaign w the characters selected. Check back later today for some character details

Seeing as that's a 15pt buy before factoring in the 6 (since it's apparently too terrible to put on the chart), I think I'll go ahead and buy in. Thinking Expert/Wizard. Wherever he's placed in the army staff would be where he begins his training as an arcanist.
Is this a Homebrew setting or Golarion? I've got the rough fluff but I'm hoping to refine it a little.

OK official recruiting. Just a note I am very much not a meta gamer type, I love creative rpers. This recruitment will stay open for a while, so no rush, as I always do i will give a 48 hour notice before closing. I would expect 1 post per day
3-5 players, each would start as an NPC class, warrior, expert or adept (though if people wanted commoner or aristocrat go for it) They would play that to start, and would level up to 1 at which point they would choose a PC class. From then on they would pick whatever class they wanted at each level, but it would always be Gestalted with the original NPC class. The only limitation on picking the PC classes, after the first one, is that if you are selecting a new class it must make RP sense. Say you are an Expert/Fighter and want to add Oracle, then something better have happened story wise. Maybe you took an acid blast to the face and are now cursed with the blind curse, or you killed a monster and drank it's blood in a fit of nasty glory, and now only speak in tongues in battle...whatever.
I actually liked Varin's idea. The landscape around Magnimar is being overrun by goblins. No one knows where they are coming from. All characters have responded to a call for new men in the army, having had their town/home destroyed by goblins.
Stats would be a choice of either a 15pt buy or roll 4d6 drop lowest BUT you do not get to place them wherever you want so it would look like this
STR 4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 6, 4) = 13

INT 4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 2, 3) = 12
WIS 4d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 2, 1) = 6
CHA 4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 2, 1) = 11
Drop lowest of each
Each character begins with 15 GP to spend as they wish and a set of clothes worth 10 gp or less
Everyone gets 2 traits and depending on the characters selected some will be given 1-3 more, to help offset bad rolls.
Those who went Adept would be allowed to choose what casting stat, but choosing INT or CHA would result in casting failure chance with armor.
All Paizo is allowed. If you want to use a 3pp you have to get it approved. Keep in mind that I do not own any...so keep that in mind.
No Leadership, only creation feats that create consumables allowed
No PvP
Once characters are selected I will assign them gear (ie from the army), what that is will be based on how the CHARACTER answers the following questions, from the army recruiter/quartermaster
What do you want to join the army?
Why should we take you? How do we know you aren't going to be a resources suck?
What skills do you have?
What is your favorite color? and what is the air speed of a swallow?

write him up. Answer the questions and we will see where it goes. You go with the idea that you were part of an attack force on a village and were chasing the villagers then forgot why you were walking with them and wound up walking right into the camp and were taken prisoner. Then take it from there.
Literally everything is on the table folks, if you can justify it, you can do it.

NPC Class: Expert
Race: Goblin
Skills: Uncertain how we do these. Should I choose the 10 class skills? Also wondering about the skill ranks and saves and BAB. Since we're 0th level we don't get those, yeah?
Traits: Color Thief and Advantageous Distraction
Gear: Entertainer's Outfit, Backpack (common), Club, Torch (common), Padded Armor, Waterskin, Belt Pouch, Lamp Oil (1-pint flask), Tindertwig, Paper Candle Firework, 3gp 8sp 9cp
Appearance: With ash-black skin that has a reddish tint, Blamo is definitely unusual. His beady deep-red eyes complement his usually-grinning huge mouth containing bone-white jagged teeth. He has a slight body, one that would be scrawny were it not for the hints of muscle.
His over-sized and hairless head hold his massive ears. He is still as ugly as an ordinary goblin, possibly uglier due to the barely-visible numerous burns and scars on his body.
Personality: An overinflated ego and little common sense. Blamo is out for himself and his own interests, plain and simple. He's very intelligent but lacks foresight or planning, often following his own impulses recklessly. He has trouble paying attention and is always curious.
Fond of nonsensical cussing and has disgusting eating habits, Blamo usually stuffs his mouth with whatever food is available to sate his ravenous hunger. He has a twisted sense of humor and a fondness for the eccentric.
Somewhat forgetful and very destructive, intentional or otherwise. Whether he's insane or he just doesn't care is debatable. Possibly both. Gain his trust and get him to pay attention long enough and you'll have a walking bomb to point at the enemy of your choosing.
He's clever, he's insane, and he's definitely not stupid—Blamo plays with fire and doesn't care if everyone, including himself, gets burned.
History: Born to a tribe of goblins whose name Blamo can't be bothered to remember, Blamo outperformed near everyone his age the day after he was born by eating them when he was hungry and punching the daylights out of anyone stupid enough to think they could eat Blamo.
His fondness for fire manifested early, setting alight a batch of explosives that happened to be lying around and thereafter responding to the increasingly urgent cries of "BLAMO! GEDDOWN!" until a grand explosion, the first of many that Blamo would cause.
Blamo was one of the best warriors and would have been chieftain if he was interested in being chieftain. He wasn't. Still, he was around and the tribe quickly learned to watch out whenever Blamo appeared and to run away if he was cackling madly. The goblin spent his time learning how to use tools, learning how to make fire and read and anything that happened to catch his interest, bugging the other goblins until someone taught him what he wanted, found a book that would teach him what he wanted, or distracted him long enough with something else. Nobody would dare go against Blamo. He was insane, but he had his uses. Also, they couldn't kill him when they tried.
Blamo minds his own business usually but when something big happens, Blamo wants to see what it's about. When they formed the attack force, Blamo went along even though Blamo didn't know what that was all about but it was fun and then he got distracted and lost track of the other goblins. Then he walked into camp.
What do you want to join the army?
Why wouldn't you want Blamo to join the army? Blamo is amazing! Blamo needs no reason, radish sharpener! Blamo's reasons are Blamo's own!
Why should we take you? How do we know you aren't going to be a resources suck?
Are you saying you wouldn't take Blamo? That Blamo would be suck? Mimsy vermin juggler! You insult Blamo! Blamo is amazing! You should take Blamo because he is Blamo! You do not know what you are looking at, scabbed lute rubber!
What skills do you have?
Blamo has many skills! Blamo is amazing! Blamo once set fire to whole tribe cave! Was not my tribe. Don't know who, but was pretty. Blamo can also beat people. Is good warrior. Blamo prefers fire though.
What is your favorite color? and what is the air speed of a swallow?
RED! Red is the best color, is the color of fire, of burning, of explode! Burn, burn, burn, burnburnburn! *cackles madly* Black is also best color, like Blamo's skin, like ashes.
Blamo don't know how fast Blamo can swallow while in air. Blamo thinks he can swallow very fast. Blamo once swallowed whole goblindog leg in moments, nothing left. Was tasty.
Blamo hungry now. You look tasty. Have food? Blamo demands to be fed.
I fail all the charisma checks. Which does make sense. Goblin. Sadly can't use any profanity because of messageboard rules, but I want the flavor, so you'll have to deal with amusing made-up non-sensical cusses which, I assure you, are meant to be very insulting. You dogfur groomer.
If it's alright, he'll also be rather nasty. As in, I'm-eating-the-newly-cooked-flesh-of-my-dead-goblin-ex-comrades-because-I'm -hungry nasty. But that's goblins for ya.

Darius Glokensmith
His family have been smiths, tinkers, alchemist, arcanist, and inventors for ages. Darius learned all of these things at the side of his father and grandfather as he grew up showing a special talent for alchemy. However he showed no arcane talent what so ever. With his father unhappy with him and his mother. Fighting at home over the fact that he might not be his fathers son drove him to the temple there he found solace in prayer. However that peace was not to last one day he returned home from his prayers to find his father had beaten his mother. He flew into a rage seizing his fathers latest clockwork creation and beat his father with it. He didn't stop hitting him when he stopped moving in fact he didn't stop until the clockwork long since broken shattered in bus hand. As the guards took him away his mother pleaded for mercy for her son. Unbeknownst to him while he was waiting to see the magistrate his mother sold everything for a bribe send her son into the new army they were forming anything just spare his life.... So young Darius was sent before the quatermaster....

As he is seated the quatermaster looks him over noting the wounds on his neck, wrists, and ankles from where he must have been chained and sees several guardsmen outside waiting in the young man in front of him. Not the first I have seen like this. Wonder what he did though. That's a lot of guard for a such a scrawny boy. Ah well let's get this done 200 more after him today.
What do you want to join the army?
Swallows and thinks carefully before he answers knowing his life hangs in the balance and if he doesn't get this job not only will he die but his mother till have nothing and no means of support. These thoughts weigh heavily on him. I'm guessing you mean why... As to it.... Because my mother gave up everything to give me this chance and I cannot let her down. Also because thus is the only way to find redemption for what I did....
The quatermaster frowns and corrects the question on his paper. And once again the Quatermaster wonders what the boy did to warrent this.....
Why should we take you? How do we know you aren't going to be a resources suck? More importantly how do we know you won't desert like the criminal you are?
Gulps. Because I will work harder than anyone else you have Sir. This is my one chance if I fail I die and my mother starves. That's why I can't run and why I must do my best.
The quatermaster still isn't sure about this one and it tells in his bearing.....
And what skills do you have?
Darius smiles at this question...
As to my skills I am an alchemist, a trained healer, and am familiar with survival; gathering food; and useful plants from the wild. In addition I am familiar with arcane theory, various devices, and am knowledgeable about various things found in the natural world. Also have a good eye for detail comes from the rest.... Also I can use several different magical devices if I am careful though I'm not a caster....
The quatermaster seems impressed by this list of skills.
Last two questions boy. What is your favorite color? And what is the air speed of a swallow?
Looks confused and startled.
Hmmm blue. It's relaxing and helps me focus. It also reminds me of other things I find pleasant. Like the color of fathers skin in death... And as for the swallow African or European? Leaden or unleaden?? If European then about 24miles an hour. If its unleaden. An African about 20. Also unleaden. If you want more you will have to ask one of those bird people. And I mean the scientist not the tengu.
The quatermaster smiles a bit We will be in touch....
Look what I did. I killed my father he was beating mg mother. I just got so mad... That he could do that to her she was innocent never hurt anyone. Well once I started I didn't stop hitting him til it was too late. Mother put everything up as a bribe to let me do time here in the army instead of being executed. She will starve if I don't make it. Please. . Looks sick and forlorn. Please I will be a model to all the rest I will do all the worst jobs anything just please let me save her. I don't even care about my own life but she shouldn't suffer for what I did...

Over-sized limbs: Grix is an oddity in that his arms and hands are much larger than they should proportionally be. However this allows him to use Large weapons without penalty.

Grix spent his life perfecting the art of half-truths in order to accomplish what he need to. After all, who would intentionally help a tiefling. Grix has a +1 trait bonus on Bluff or Intimidate checks and one Bluff is a class skill for him.

Grix is a bit of a troubled fellow. He hasn't made many friends in the past simply because no one ever bothered to take the time to know him. He is a little awkward social because of this, though probably more because of his sadistic need to cause a little pain every now and again. Its not as if he hasn't tried to suppress it. But it just feels so good to see the wicked suffer. In any case, this has caused Grix to become a bit of an at home pathologist, though most of his knowledge is limited to small animals for obvious reason.
Grix had spent most of his young life on the town watch. He was taught how to wield a bastard sword with his massive arms (apparently someone higher up thought that it funny to have the 'bastard son' use a bastard sword. Grix was sent to serve in the army by his town. 'Its an honor' they said. Really they just wanted to get rid of the taint from there village. And so it was, that Grix made his way to this bastion of war to perhaps find a way to sate his need to cause pain and perhaps find a friend or two in the process.
A respectively tall, dark man enters the tent where the quarter master is sitting, filling out piles of paperwork. The man's ram like horns and unnaturally large arms instantly give him away to be a tiefling. without bothering to look up the quartermaster begins so question the 'man' before him.
"So you want to join the fight eh? Well lets get to it shall we? Why exactly do you want to join the army? its not like pay is that great, the food is terrible, and you're likely to die out there." Grix smiles at the man and begins to speak in a very strait tone. Its clear that his answer is scripted as if written by someone else, "Well sir, I'm here to serve my country and to represent my home. Though it may be hard it will be worth it." As the quartermast finally looks up from his papers, he can see a shine in Grix's eye that he does infact what to be here, but whatever his real reasons are is unclear. "Well, Why should we take you? How do we know you aren't going to be a resources suck from the real men?
Again Grix smiles, though this time it is clearly a smile of his own. He looks left and right at his respectively bulging arms that each almost reach his knees "Do these honestly look like a 'resource suck' to you? When I served on my homes watch, I carried a sword big enough to qualify as a short spear to most men. I think your men will sleep happy knowing they have a comrade that can not only swing a sword, but he knows how to place it as well."
The quarter master grunts a bit and continues his list of 'required' questions' eager to move on. Well, What skills have ye got? We don't just send out every fool who thinks he can swing a sword."
At this Grix furrows his brow and puts his massive finger to his temple. "I may not look like I got much up here but as I mentioned I served my time as a town guard with a massive sword. The weapons they gave us were so small; when I asked for a larger blade, the smith just laughed at me. I had to forge the blade myself. It took a bit of working, but I did it just the same, if you really need it, I can be quite good with a hot iron"at this last sentence he's eyes gleam with as though there is more to this last statement than meets the eye."Well whatever then, the last few questions may seem a bit odd, but I've been asked to question you about them: What is your favorite color? and what is the air speed of a swallow?"
what do you mean African or European?
Grix is clearly confused and thrown off by these last questions "Well, I do love black and blue, though I would have to say a healthy red is quite nice. As to the uh swallow did you call it? Well, I would think that anyone would know that a swallow flies as fast as anything that flies does."
Bluff to know about Swallows 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
