Patrick O’Malley is nothing more than your typical “Irishman” like his drink; he tends to get into fights, and has a mean right hook. He was born in a small farming village on the Hermea Island. His bad temper would cause a lot of trouble for him through most of his life. He eventually had to leave the emerald isle of perfection and sailed to Magnimar where he was barely off the boat he found himself in trouble at a local tavern. After a few to many drinks Patrick ended up exchanging punches with a member of the local militia.
Patrick was able to show him a thing or two when it comes to throwing punches around. But being a newcomer to the city streets Patrick was forced to spend the night in the local jail drunk tank.
He was awakened as the guard informed him that instead of jail time, Patrick was given a golden opportunity, a chance to be in the army.
Patrick was cleaned up and was escorted to the recruitment office.
Why do you want to join the army?
Ya gotta be bloody kidding, right? I just be in this ere city for no more than a fortnight and I done be drafted. Shanghaied probably more like it I say. Besides I ain’t got any other choice, it’s the army of the stockade so I am told.
Why should we take you? How do we know you aren't going to be a resources suck?
Seein hows this ere army be the best thing for an outta work immigrant, ya most likely be needin the manpower, and I be needin the work. Asides all that if I don’t be workin out in this ere army it most likely be the stockade fer me, or probably just be in the street gangs.
What skills do you have?
Skills Ya say? Well I reckon I be pretty good wit me fists, why just da other day I be givin that son of goblin, no good, wife stealin’ bastard Jerry Sullivan a beatin he won’t be soon forgettin. An by they way He was in this ere army, so I reckon that some a these men good be using a bit a trainin to toughen em’ up.
What is your favorite color? and what is the air speed of a swallow?
What kind bloody question does dat be? My favorite color by emerald green, it be the color a my family cloth. And da air speed of a swallow? Well best I reckon it be slower than a well placed arrow.

Varin Artusk Darkthane |
these are looking good folks,
Must say I am surprised no one has gone adept yet.
Remember low stats will be balanced by extra traits and better starting gear.
Already going cleric. Adept and double stacking spells seems cheesy. also I want skills this game unlike Varin who has like no skill points lol.
And do we start with our first lvl feat? If so I want fast learner let's me get HP+ skill point from favored class or I cam get one and the alt progression. It's like toughness but I can still take toughness.
EntropyRules |
I thought about adept and going with rogue or fighter, Use the familiar as a flank for rogue or tank up as a wizard, but then I was like ehh, I'm a tiefling with chunky arms, I get big weapons and confuse them with the disproportions of everything. (longs spears are normally 8 ft, as a large spear does that mean I'm carrying a spear that about 14 feet? lolz)
MiniGM |
Yes you do get your first level feat. Youstart with everything you get for the level of the npc class, once you hit level 1 you will add the other bonuses from the PC class. So you will add bonuses to saves, possibly hit points etc.
On the note about hit points max to start, then roll twice each following level and take the high. er of the two rolls
rashly5 |
Oh, didn't know that. Didn't take my first level feat. For the record, it'd be Burn! Burn! Burn!
(Anyone else sensing a theme here?)
fnord72 |
Two extra traits are equal to one feat, extra starting gear looses it's bonus by 2nd or 3rd level (or it's way too powerful and unbalancing).
4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 5, 1) = 17 16
4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 5, 6) = 16 14
4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 2, 2) = 9 7
4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 4, 4) = 18 14
4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 1, 3) = 12 11
4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 3, 4) = 15 13
Great except for the easily dead dump stat of con...
Aristocratic rogue may be workable, focus on ranged attacks.
MiniGM |
fnord. Not sure where your observation is going...does that mean you are not interested? Or just a concern?
I think the extra traits feat is weak for a feat personally, and a character with much lower stats could use the bump, and yes better gear does tale off sort of, but in this those characters will always have a money advantage as I intend to award money equally.
EntropyRules |
Ok, so I know its third party and that I already have a character built, but how do you feel about the priest class? I was just looking at some funny stuff to try out and thought it might be fun to be a grippli or aasamar priest.
EntropyRules |
4d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 5, 5) = 16 13
4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 2, 5) = 15 13
4d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 5, 1) = 11 10
4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 4, 5) = 17 15
4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 3, 2) = 14 12
4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 4, 2) = 16 14
Well hmmm, this could be interesting. Alright I'll try it. We'll swing with an Archon-Blooded Aasimar that pretty much has none of the normal racial triats (Halo intead of darkvision, SR vs Evil instead of Energy Resistance, Truespeaker instead of Skilled, and instead of a spell like ability a different bonus from the variant chart. Going with a Priest/Warrior would be funny (its basicly a super spelled paladin without smite). I'll mull it over. I really thought about going adept/priest, but it seems a tad redundant.
AinvarG |
Well, let's see what the dice say...
Strength: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 3, 3) = 15 for 12
Dexterity: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 6, 5) = 15 for 14
Constitution: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 4, 2) = 12 for 11
Intelligence: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 5, 1) = 14 for 13
Wisdom: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 4, 6) = 16 for 13
Charisma: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 3, 6) = 17 for 14
Interesting. No overwhelming best choice there. I'm considering a catfolk adept/rogue, but some other races sound interesting, so I will peruse some more - even if not selected, I do like the creation and planning phase...
AinvarG |
Yeah, I like the potential synergy of catfolk, adept, and rogue. The adept spellcasting stat would be Charisma.
He or she will be more focused on rogue than adept and the feat choices will likely be emphasizing their feline nature as much as anything.
Ability Score Racial Traits: Catfolk are sociable and agile, but often lack common sense. They gain +2 Dexterity, +2 Charisma, –2 Wisdom.
Type: Catfolk are humanoids with the catfolk subtype.
Size: Catfolk are Medium creatures and have no bonuses or penalties due to their size.
Base Speed: Catfolk have a base speed of 30 feet.
Languages: Catfolk begin play speaking Common and Catfolk. catfolk with high Intelligence scores can choose from the following languages: Elven, Gnoll, Gnome, Goblin, Halfling, Orc, and Sylvan.
Cat's Luck (Ex) Once per day when a catfolk makes a Reflex saving throw, he can roll the saving throw twice and take the better result. He must decide to use this ability before the saving throw is attempted.
Cat's Claws: Some catfolk have stronger and more developed claws than other members of their race, and can use them to make attacks. catfolk with this racial trait have a pair of claws they can use as natural weapons. These claws are primary attacks that deal 1d4 points of damage. This racial trait replaces natural hunter.
Climber: Catfolk hunters excel at hunting prey from trees and other high vantage points. catfolk with this racial trait possess a climb speed of 20 feet (along with the +8 racial bonus on Climb checks a climb speed affords). This racial trait replaces sprinter.
Low-Light Vision: catfolk have low-light vision allowing them to see twice as far as humans in dim light.
Looking at Catfolk Exemplar (Sharp Claws) as a feat, improving claw damage to 1d6. I am have an eye toward the Vicious Claw talent, which will allow d8s for sneak attacks done with claws.
Considering spellcasting, however, I think I need to start with Arcane Armor Training.
Edit: Can't take that feat until 3rd level, so Exemplar it is.
Interview to come.
AinvarG |
Well, guess need some more work needs to be done before he's ready for the interview.
The adept's class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Craft (Int), Handle Animal (Cha), Heal (Wis), Knowledge (all skills taken individually) (Int), Profession (Wis), Spellcraft (Int), and Survival (Wis).
Skill points: 3
Skills:
Climb 9 = 0 [rank]+1 [strength]+8 [racial]
Handle Animal 7 = 1 [rank]+3 [class]+3 [charisma]
Knowledge (Nature) 5 = 1 [rank]+3 [class]+1 [intelligence]
Survival 4 = 1 [rank]+3 [class]+0 [wisdom]
The feline before you has a very open demeanor. You are pretty sure he could not keep a secret if his nine lives depended on it. He is covered in soft gray fur with irregular darker stripes. When he gets nervous, he drums the claws of his right hand into the palm of his left - and those claws look pretty serious even if their wielder doesn't look like the type to use them.
What do you want to join the army?
"Oh, I want to see the world! Well, maybe not the world right away, but outside Magnimar, anyway. I don't have the means to travel, but I'd be happy to work for the opportunity and when I heard the army was looking for soldiers, I thought this could be my chance!"
Why should we take you? How do we know you aren't going to be a resources suck?
"Oh, I'll do anything you need me to! My master - he's the one that taught me to cast spells - he made me do all sorts of nasty jobs 'so I did not get proud' but I think it was because he didn't want to do them. But it shows that I will do what it takes to take advantage of an opportunity!"
What skills do you have?
"Well, I have some limited spellcasting, but I'll get better with practice, master says. Right now, I'm best working with animals - horses especially. I can climb anything, too."
What is your favorite color? and what is the air speed of a swallow?
"I love a good calico fur. That's not one color, though - um, I think it's the orange fur that I like. It's bright and unusual and glows in the sun. Yeah, tabby cat orange.
Knowledge (Nature): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8 "The air speed of a swallow? Gosh, they seem very quick flitting around like they do, but I don't know how fast they really are. I could ask my master if you really need to know."
AinvarG |
ainvar. Remember you will have arcane spell failure if you wear armor. Not a prob just keep it in mind.
Yeah, I mentioned Arcane Armor Training would be a future build feature. Maybe not, maybe he will concentrate on non-somatic spells or take Silent Spell instead. But definitely aware. Thanks.
AinvarG |
Having slept on it, this character would benefit more from a gestalt of warrior and rogue, kind of becoming a strike force type of specialist. Someone needs to take out those goblins sentries before the main force attacks, right?
Alternatively, he could easily become an adept/sorcerer, too, with his stats. I have not given enough thought to what bloodline would make sense - the warrior rogue is more interesting to me at the moment.

Interview Questions...
Why do you want to join the army?
I sent here by my divine zealot parents. They told me to come here and gain 'respect' and 'heritage' and other such principles so I can return to be a divine zealot like them. To be honest, I don't want to be a man of the cloth. I am fascinated with arcane, more specifically alchemy. I prefer to study and then use my knowledge to prove to my parents that i am not a waste of space as it were.
Why should we take you? How do we know you aren't going to be a resources suck?
I have the desire to be an alchemist. I will never say I won't be a resources suck, but I will be able to make up for it with providing the army with alchemical goods, so long as they pay 1/4 the price needed to make it. Plus I'll be able to blow enemies up using the bombs I can create.
What skills do you have?
I studied as an adept so I have rudimentary magic ability. I also have studied, much do my parents forcing, in a array of knowledge; arcane history, planes and nature to be precise. I can cast basic spells for healing and aid but nothing more. I am however a quick learner, and feel I naturally pick up on things taught to me.
What is your favorite color? and what is the air speed of a swallow?
My favorite color is prismatic, because alchemy encompasses all the colors of the spectrum and not just one. And as far as the swallow, African or European? Leaden or unleaden? Carrying a 1-pound coconut or not carrying anything? Please be more specific.

Okay, I found the NPC classes on pg. 448, but gestalt is... different. Should I use the rules found here? It sounds like you're doing multi-classing differently, where every level is gestalted with the NPC class. Any other differences, or is there a better reference? Can I choose the NPC class for the favored class and get that bonus every level?
AinvarG |
Don't worry about finding gestalt in the books - this is a variant rule and is what the DM says it is. MiniGM said what it was here: Gestalt description
Essentially, look at the two classes and where they have the same characteristics, the character gets the better of the two. So a warrior/wizard gets good Fort saves and good BAB (from the warrior class) and good Will saves (from the wizard). The class skills list would be everything from both classes and the number of skills per level would be two (from both classes). Then the character would get the features unique to the warrior and those unique to the wizard.
Note: I'm hoping that I interpret MiniGM's intent correctly - if not, I need him to clarify, too.
Viscount K |
I'm totally in for this, if there's still time to submit. I love straight-down rolling, and gestalt too. Plus, dinky recruits are always hilarious. Let's see what stats happen to me, hm?
Str:4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 2, 4) = 12 = 11
Dex:4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 1, 5) = 18 = 17
Con:4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 6, 5) = 19 = 17
Int:4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 4, 3) = 13 = 11
Wis:4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 3, 4) = 10 = 9
Cha:4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 3, 6) = 19 = 16
Not bad, not bad at all. Lessee here. Fast, tough, charismatic, but nothing to write home about otherwise. Sounds to me like a Will Scarlett in training. Duelist and scoundrel, ladies man and all-around charmer...in his own mind, anyway. Give me a bit to let this cook, I think this could be interesting.

Alright, folks, say hello to
Crimson William
Half-elven Warrior and Daredevil extraordinaire. Will to his friends, or the comeliest wench in the room, he's expert with a blade, quick on his feet, and most importantly, skilled with his tongue.
Or at least...that's what he'd tell you. In reality, Will's just barely out of his boyhood, and a bit more impressed with his own talent than may be good for him - not to mention that any elf blood in him is a few generations back. There may be a bit of a point to his ears, but you'd have to be looking pretty hard. There may even be a little truth to it, but honestly, he just thinks it lends him a bit of mystery. Still, the kid's charming, and there's no denying he could learn to be a heck of a swordsman with a bit more muscle on his arms.
What do you want to join the army?
Will arches an eyebrow at the question, then flashes a winning smile. "To see the world, of course." Idiot can't even pronounce a simple question properly. "And what better way could there be to make my mark, hm?" Not to mention if I don't get out of town right quick, Lorinda's husband is going to make mincemeat of my orphaned behind.
Why should we take you? How do we know you aren't going to be a resources suck?
"Ah. Well, I'm told I'm a bit of a storyteller. I could always keep morale up, what? Or," And here he gives a theatrical sigh, followed once again by that cheeky grin, "I suppose there's always swordwork to be done."
What skills do you have?
"The better question might be what skills don't I have, good sir. I can find my way through the woods on a moonless night, fight my way through a battalion with naught but a good sword in my hand, and fox my way out of any sticky situation you'd care to name." Laying it on a bit thick, but then, this guy seems a bit thick, so that's alright.
What is your favorite color? and what is the air speed of a swallow?
"My favorite color? Why, red, of course. What else? And...er...the air speed of a swallow. Ah." What the... "I think I might need to observe some in flight before answering that one. For the moment, let's say, faster than the eagle chasing it, shall we?"
I'll get around to posting stats, skills and the like later on, but there's the gist of the character. In case you missed it, that's Daredevil, the bard archetype. I figure if he's gonna have outstanding stats, he may as well be a less impressive class to make up for it.
rashly5 |
Pfft. I was curious and did the point buy conversion on what I rolled and apparently I got a 6-point buy. (If we take 6 as also equal to -4 points. It is most likely less.)
That's more than 30 points you've got over on me.
And yeah, you're tied with highest roll so far with EntropyRules at a solid 37 points.
For those interested, Gilthanis is the lowest roller so far with a whopping 3 points. I'm the next with 6 points and then Thornborn with 8 points.
Interestingly enough, the Goblin PC race has its ability scores at a +0 bonus (+4 dex, -2 cha, -2 str) compared with the usual +2 stat bonus most races have.
14, 11, 11, 15, 7, 6
5 + 1 + 1 + 7 - 4 - 4 = 14 - 8 = 6
