------------

***This is a lead-in adventure for a campaign I will be running in FGG Lost Lands setting. The campaign will proceed through a series of modules. The freedom of the players to select their challenges and direct the course of the plot will increase as the campaign progresses.

When the PC's are high enough level, challenges like the legendary Dungeon of Graves, Rappan Athuk, and the Slumbering City of Tsar will certainly loom before them if that is what they choose to face. However, by that time, there will also have been opportunities to become embroiled in intrigue in the City of Bard's Gate. In my experience, this is the best way to add dimension to a hack-and-slash dungeon crawl.

There will be future recruitment threads at different intervals in the campaign, so participation in this lead-in adventure is not required for those who just want to test their mettle against Rappan Athuk later (or some of the other quests and adventures along the way). However, participants in the lead-in adventures will be given preference for inclusion. Plus, there might be some treasure you won't want to miss :D.***

-------------

OK I wasn't going to post this yet because start of gameplay is a little way's off but I may as well get the interest check rolling.

This will be the third and final group running through my Lost Lands mega-campaign. See "The Wizard's Amulet" and "The Mouth of Doom" for examples of the style and pace and tone of this campaign.

These three parallel adventures serve as proving grounds for characters interested in taking on the challenges of Rappan Athuk, Slumbering Tsar, the lower levels of the Stoneheart Valley Dungeon, and the Cyclopean Deeps of the Underdark.

Details and character creation rules to follow shortly.

"core +":

Start at second level, with 150 GP.

20 point buy. Dump stat as low as 7 after racial is fine. No starting stat above 18 after racial.

*CRB: Everything (Just about. Crafting is limited to consumables, the other crafting feats may come into play at mid-high levels. More on this later. Leadership will be altered. There may be other things I have forgotten.)

*Base Classes: Cavalier, Inquisitor

*Featured Races: Aasimar, Tiefling, Drow

*APG: All feats, all spells. (most other crunch like rage powers and bloodlines is go too)

*Ultimate Magic: All feats, all spells.

*No Ultimate Combat. (except some archetypes)

*No Advanced Race Guide*

As for archetypes, I still haven't compiled a list but all APG is good. If it's UC or UM, ask for now.

Special house rule: No traits, unless you are a fighter or a rogue. Fighters and rogues get 2 traits. Traits from hardcovers are fine, AP/splat/blog ones or whatever run it by me, re-skin as needed.

We are using Action Points (hero points from APG). Begin with 2. Gain one at level. Max 3 in the bank.

Everyone gets one free bonus feat at 1st level.

What is your stance on ACG playtest classes?

No ACG

Dot. DM Grimmy, any particular lore regarding Drow? I'm thinking an Arcane Archer...

Is the plan to go through the entirety of Rappan Athuk? Or are there other dungeons/modules that are planned?

Grimmy, I'm going to bite the bullet and submit a character for your Core+ campaign [And, yes, my palms are sweating. ;)] because I like your GM'ing style and your quick pace of play.

I'm submitting Valerius Brightshield again (originally submitted him for Wizard's Amulet) with only minor changes.

Iquiry: You indicate that we are to start at 2nd level with "150 GP", does that mean 150 gold above the average or max gold a 1st level character would get based on class or literally only 150 gold regardless of class?

Excellent question.

There is a lot of material ready, with 3 groups running in parallel through the same sandbox setting, with time tracked in game for all three. At big forks in the road, recruitments will re-open for roster exchanges and new additions, so to some degree you can basically decide where you want to go and who you want to go with.

There's a lot more on the menu then Rappan Athuk, but I suspect everyone who survives long enough will set foot in there at least once. There is also I very detailed city to get involved in intrigue and urban adventures, other dungeons, and exploration/hex crawl type stuff that can take you to the sleeping city of Tsar or down to the underdark.

The campaign becomes more player driven narrative as it progresses, these intro adventures are just proving grounds or entry points to introduce PC's to the setting and weave them in and give them evolving motivations.

If this sounds like a grandiose experiment, don't worry, I've tried it and failed in tabletop before enough times that I finally figured out the tricks to get it right. Everything I'm offering here I've run before, so it will be mostly smooth.

The only hiccups are due to me getting used to PbP as a medium.

Check out the two sister games, already in progress, if you want to evaluate how well I'm doing with that :D

I would love to see that, I never got a chance to play or see an AA yet. Several in my group have tried and not made it to the prestige.

Not lore exactly, but I will say that Drow in this setting (at least how I envision it) are not quite the kill-on-sight race that they would be in say, Greyhawk.

The society is responsible for attrocities, and cruelty is embedded in the culture, but individuals have free will and people above ground do know that.

Expect some prejudice though.

Nice new avatar. The other one might be jinxed now!

re:money: 150 gold coins, plain and simple.

Glad to see your submission, and glad it's Valerius.

When I looked at the history under the campaign information, a Cleric of Thyr seemed to be a perfect fit for this game.

(Subject to DM approval...as always)

Yeah, after what happened to Alrik the Paladin, that avatar seemed like a bit of bad luck...yeesh.

Read that wall of text did you? That certainly won't hurt your chances.

Campaign tab updated with deities and info about the city where the adventure starts out.

I want to state my interest in this and that I'll be crunching up an archery fighter.

Cool man.

Has anyone ever noticed that the avatar Tim Frie is using looks a LOT like Colin Ferrell?

This recruitment is not going to close and go to gameplay quite as fast as the other two, because it's the final one.

Feel free to dot and discuss and ask questions and make builds whenever your ready, but when you have an avatar ready for me to look at, please touch on a couple things for me.

*What is your posting availability like? What do you like in terms of pace for PbP?

*How familiar are you with the setting? Have you run or played in Necromancer/FGG modules before?

*How many PbP do you currently participate in? Player or GM?

*What does "Old School" mean to you?

*Would you have still been interested in this campaign if it was CRB only? Why or why not? (just curious really.)

For the most part there are no right or wrong answers to these questions. "I can only post once a week" is a wrong answer but that's the only one I can think of right now :p

Posting availability: Multiple times per day.

Pace: Double shot cap, Red Bull Turbo speed :) The closer to a F2F type environment the better.

Familiarity: Not all that familiar, just what I have seen posted by you and others about the Lost Lands.

Played FFG mods before: Nope.

Current PbP: 2...maybe dropping to 1. Player only. Thinking about trying my hand at DM'ing in the near future.

Old School (adj.): Having the quality of games as played in AD&D (c. 1981-1985). Kicking in the door, bashing things and taking their stuff was still a perfectly valid play style. Magic items were rarer and more wondrous. PC's were not quasi-deities until getting to really high levels (15+) and it took a LOT longer to get to those high levels.

CRB only interest: Yes. Core only roolz! Says the guy submitting an Aasimar PC ;)

Silver Crusade

Dotting for interest. I'm thinking blaster wizard or debuffer witch

Tin Foil Yamakah wrote:

Glad you checked in TFY!

Read the second post from the top it explains what material is being used (no witch).

For those already building, roll 2nd level hp here in this thread, re-roll 1's.

Count me in! I've got a Banner Bard fully built, I can show you the details if necessary but the concept is easy to grasp. He's Bard with a very inspirational flag attached to his Longspear.

Health: 1d8 ⇒ 7 Nice!

Just a few questions:

1)Arcane Duelist Bard archetype? It's in the APG.

2)Flagbearer feat? Comes from "Pathfinder Campaign Setting: The Inner Sea World Guide".

3) Will I be able to pick up a Banner of the Ancient Kings eventually? Comes from "Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Lands of the Linnorm Kings" and is a major part of the build.

4)How long of a background would you like?

Sorry for the long list of extra things but this character will be loads of fun in any party, after all, everyone can use a good buff. Very interested in this campaign and I'll be checking back often if you have any questions for me.

Just noticed your questions above:

1) I am able to post multiple times per day, I check my PbPs at least once every 30 minutes or so because I'm stuck at a computer all day. Perfect job for a PbP Player!

2)I have not played in this setting before and can't wait to learn more about it.

3)I am currently a player in ~4 PFS campaigns, each of which I update multiple times daily.

4)To me the term "Old School" brings me back to things like DnD 2 and 3. Many fond memories of groups past, and characters who were killed off long ago(inanimate objects have a thing for crushing/smashing/mutilating my characters).

5)If this campaign were just CRB I would still have applied, obviously with a different character, CRB only games tend to be more enjoyable in the sense that you focus more on Roleplaying than you do on optimization.

Doting for intrest, I'm thinking a two weapon fighter. I'll answer your questions once I have a complete character sheet to go with the post.

2nd Level HP: 1d10 ⇒ 9

Not too shabby at all!

I'm headed off to work, but I'll post background and crunch later tonight! I've got a pretty cool Fighter (Archer) that I've been wanting to try for a long time. And with the cool bonus of traits for fighters and that extra feat, I think it could be nasty/fun.

Rolling for 2nd level Hit Points

2nd Level HP: 1d8 ⇒ 6

Woo-hoo! One point better than standard. I was fully expecting a '2'.

Sounds like the player is a perfect fit and the character needs some retooling! Check out the char-gen parameters, second post from the top.

1. Arcane Duelist = YES. There is one already running through "The Wizard's Amulet".

2. Golarion Specific/Adventure Path Crunch/Softcover Splats = NO. I've made a few exceptions, think I allowed Dervish Dancer and Boon Companion. But I made a resolution to stay firm on this for this recruiting phase.

3. Golarion Specific/Adventure Path Crunch/Softcover Splats = NO. See above. Also, any build that relies on specific kit is inadvisable. No magic-marts, no WBL fairy, limited crafting.

4. Pretty much no minimum backstory. If you have a name that you didn't lift straight out of a video game or pop fiction unmodified I'm happy. "Warrior from the North" is enough backstory for me.

Also no upper limit to backstory, just don't write a novel without collaborating with me to make sure it's not anachronistic with the setting.

If you check out the other games in progress you can see both extremes at work. The reason I have no minimum is because I like when characterization develops organically through play. But I also think it's great when a party starts play already woven into the setting a bit, with some shared history and connections among party members.

Not finished yet but here's as far as I've gotten on archetypes. Still need to look at Monks, Paladins, Sorcerors.

Barbarian:
Elemental Kin
Savage
Superstitious
Totem Warrior

Bard:
Court Bard
Dirge Bard
Magician
Savage Skald
Songhealer
Sound Striker

Cleric:
Cloistered
Crusader
Merciful Healer

Druid:
Mooncaller
Storm Druid
Tempest Druid
All Shamans

Fighter:
Archer
Crossbowman
Lore Warden
Mobile Fighter
Savage Warrior
Swordlord
Two-Handed
Two-Weapon
Weapon Master

Ranger:
Skirmisher
Trapper
Infiltrator
Spirit Ranger
Trapper
Wild Stalker

Rogue:
Burglar
Knife Master
Scout
Survivalist
Swashbuckler
Thug
Trapsmith

Sounds good! I'll put together a character within the parameters.

Grand Lodge

Hmmmm A Knife Master

Looking forward to seeing it.

That goes for all y'all.

Goin' for an oldie but a goodie Halfing Rogue

hit die for level two

1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Can't beat a classic.

Ok, after some consideration I'm thinking Rogue/Wizard Arcane Trickster, starting out Rogue 1/Wizard 1. I get traits correct? If so I'd take Magical Knack(+2 to caster level, can't go above HD), and Reactionary(+1 Initiative).

Health: 1d6 ⇒ 6 Sweet!

Also, are we using the given BaBs or are we using the fractions? I'd prefer the latter obviously because that gives me a 1(.25) BaB instead of a 0.

You got me with that reference, I have never heard of the fractions. I'd be curious to know about it, but we are definitely using normal BaB rules.

About the traits, AT gets em you bet.

Except for background and Description I am done

You decided to skip the Knife Master archetype?

I'm not actually sure where it originated from, but it seems like a commonplace in the homebrew campaigns among the forums. My home campaign group has been using it for years. It basically just acts as a balancing factor for unusual class combos that would be fun to play but take serious BaB penalties.

Rogues have a BaB of 3/4 because their level 20 BaB is 15. Wizards have a BaB of 1/2 because of their max of 10. Basically you just add the BaB each level and round down, which allows classes without full BaBs to multiclass without taking huge BaB penalties early on. At late levels it doesn't do much, but early on it helps.

At any rate, I'll use the normal rules, and I can post my crunch if you'd like.

I like that house rule, first time I've heard of it.

I love anything that helps interesting/fun multi-classing and makes prestige classes viable.

Heck yeah post the crunch if you've got it. An alias/avatar is preferred if it's not too much trouble.

Alistus here, might be a few minor mistakes as I'm a little tired, but it should be mostly complete/correct.

Tin Foil Yamakah wrote:

In my current pass at this campaign in my home game the AoE blaster wizard does really well. There are lots of really big mobs of annoying mooks to clear.

If the witch is something you already built feel free to post the build at some point after the party composition starts to take shape. I usually allow for one sort of wild-card character per party that uses something outside the guidelines. Like a "one chewbacca" rule.

Ok I know it's early in the process and a weekend, but I want to announce two already.

1.Valerius Brightshield
2.Lucia Moonshadow
3.
4.
5.
6.

Lucia, read the adventure background spoiler when you have time and start thinking about how a tiefling rogue wizard might end up on a quest with an aasimar paladin to cleanse a shrine ;)

Will do! Thanks Grimmmy!

Lucia is very interested in "cleansing" the shrine(;

Interesting dynamics already.

Priscilla Springheel, build looks great have to see if there is room for a pair of rogues, maybe scouting/sneaking/flanking partners? Magic trap bomb-squad?

But there is some niche overlap so it depends how many roles the other submissions can cover.

Party composition should be carefully considered for this one guys, it's no walk in the park.

I'm glad, Lucia hates parks, alleyways are a lot more fun!

Looking at her alias now, Priscilla seems to be more of a combat rogue. Lucia does not like being "in combat" she floats in the back staying "invisible" to her enemies for as long as she can. I think Priscilla would be a great addition to the party, she seems like a relatively durable striker.
