The Many-Faced GM |
The Swallowtail Festival begins promptly, as scheduled, on the first day of autumn. The square before the church quickly becomes crowded as locals and travelers arrive, and several merchant tents featuring food, clothes, local crafts, and souvenirs are there to meet them.
The turnout for the opening speeches is quite respectable, and the four keynote speakers each deliver short but well-received welcomes to the festival. Mayor Deverin’s friendly attitude and excitement prove contagious as she welcomes visitors to town and jokes about how even Larz Rovanky, the local tanner (and notorious workaholic) managed to tear himself away from the tannery to attend, much to everyone’s but
Larz’s amusement. Sheriff Hemlock brings the crowd down a bit with his dour mood, his reminder to be safe around the evening’s bonfire, and his request for a moment of silence to remember those who lost their lives in the fire that claimed the town’s previous church five years ago. Fortunately, Cyrdak Drokkus is more than up to the challenge of bringing the crowd’s mood back up with his rousing anecdotes as he delivers a not-completely-irreverent recap of the long process the town went through to finance and construct the new cathedral. He throws in a bit of self-promotion at the end, as is his wont, inviting everyone to stop by the Sandpoint Theater the following evening to check out his new production of “The Harpy’s Curse,” revealing that the lead role of Avisera the harpy queen will be played by none other than the famous Magnimarian diva Allishanda! Finally, Father Zantus steps up give a short speech thanking everyone for coming before declaring the Swallowtail Festival underway.
At noon, Father Zantus and his acolytes wheel a large covered wagon into the square, and after recounting the short parable of how Desna first fell to earth and was nursed back to health by a blind child who she transformed into an immortal butterfly as a reward for her aid, they pull aside the wagon’s cover, releasing the thousand children of Desna—a furious storm of a thousand swallowtail butterflies that swarm into the air in a spiraling riot of color to a great cheer from the crowd. Throughout the rest of the day, children futilely chase butterflies, never quite quick enough to catch them.
Lunch is provided free, at the expense of Sandpoint’s taverns. Each brings its best dishes—this event is a marketing push by the taverns as much to win new customers as it is to feed a hungry crowd. It soon becomes apparent that the darling of the lunch is, once again, Ameiko Kaijitsu, whose remarkable curry-spiced salmon and early winterdrop mead easily overshadow the other offerings, such as the Hagfish’s lobster chowder or the White Deer’s peppercorn venison.
Through out the event many of the townsfolk engage in various games and idle chatting in between eating as much as possible. Beyond music and dancing, there are sack races, hide and seek, weight lifting, tug-of-war, knife throwing, and of course, the Hagfish challenge.
Mikal Karoly |
Mikal, a recent transplant from Magnimar, comes out early in the day to enjoy the festivities. His sister, Lhiannon Karoly, on his arm and her friend and lover, Sabriana, sandwiching the younger of Mikal's twin sisters between them.
They are all three dressed in their nicest daywear. Mikal is in black leathers with a green shirt, which looks in stark contrast with his white hair and dusky skin, both inherited from his mother. His deep violet eyes scan the crowd as they wander about the fair-like expanse before the cathedral. His only visible armament is his rapier, and he wears no visible armor.
As they walk about, Lhiannon and Sabriana introduce him to various townsfolk, who he meets, shakes hands with or bows as their station suits, but by the sixth or seventh introduction, he starts to get a glazed look in his eyes, like it's all a bit of an overload.
Finally, the folk are gathered before the cathedral and the speeches are made, which he listens to avidly...
When Cyrdak speaks, and mentions the production being put on that night, Lhiannon and Sabriana each give Mikal a little kiss on the cheek and excuse themselves... "We've got to go, Mikal... we both have roles to play tonight and we've got to get into costume and makeup... Come see us, later, please do... " Lhiannon says as she leaves him, arm in arm with Sabriana as they head to the theater. "ta-ta, brother," she says as she waves goodbye without turning back to look at him.
Mikal turns his attention to the rest of the speeches, then begins sampling all the foods, not just the ones folk say are the best... he wants to find out for himself. He enjoys them all, but highly praises the salmon when he samples it. "Now this is a little bit of heaven on a plate..." He bows to Ameiko. "You are indeed an artist in the kitchen, Miss Kaijitsu. And your mead is excellent as well. Thank you for the food offered... I'm glad to see everyone taking advantage of it... I'm sure they are here more for the food than for those speeches," he says, lowering his voice on that last sentence lest one of the speakers hear him.
After eating, Mikal will join the dancing, doing the best he can with the modicum of training that he has in the art, and enjoying the parade of partners available in the square.

Henry David Wickerman |
Henry David Wickerman, a reclusive and mysterious town fixture whose demonic heritage gives him an unmistakable appearance with strangely-discolored skin, a feathery reptilian tail, and even some vulture-like vestigial wings, helps himself to both the curried salmon and the lobster chowder, and participates a bit in the hide-and-seek...
untrained Stealth: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
...only to be betrayed by his wings.
He observes the tug-of-war from a distance, and contemplates using his magic for a bit of mischief. Perhaps later....
Mainly, however, he stands apart from the crowd, as has always been his wont, working on his latest topiary sculpture...
Craft (Topiary), crafter's fortune: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (5) + 14 = 19
...a decent, if not wholly satisfactory, likeness of Desna.
Mikal Karoly |
Mikal walks over to the bush-trimming fellow with the fine eye for shape and substance. He nods to the topiary and speaks up after a moment to walk around to appreciate it from all angles. "That's pretty amazing. You've quite the skill with shaping plants. I'm impressed. I'm Mikal, by the way. Relatively new in Sandpoint, but my sister has lived here for a while.. Perhaps you might have heard of her. Lhiannon Karoly? She regularly appears at the Sandpoint Theater. Though not a star yet, I think perhaps someday she might be. I must say, if you dont' mind me mentioning it, your tail is amazing. I guess I'm not sure exactly what you are, but you are quite exotic looking. I mean that in only the most complimentary way. Do you mind if I ask what your lineage is that resulted in such unique features?"
Henry David Wickerman |
"Demon, specifically vrock," Henry answers absent-mindedly as he continues working. "Probably only a few generations removed."
"Lhiannon Karoly, Lhiannon Karoly...hmm, did she play the Possessed Mannequin in 'The Perilous Comedy of Princess Barbara?'"
Mikal Karoly |
"I am embarrassed to admit I'm not sure if she did or not, she might have... She has played many roles here, and didn't write home about all of them, just the major ones... Vrock, you say? I'm not sure I've heard that classification before. But I guess I was right, that's quite exotic. I don't really know enough about the planes, I guess... Anyway my sister is, like me, half-elven, half of which is drow, so she's got dusky skin and very pale whitish hair, though with wigs and makeup, she could look like anything, really. She's always so proud of her metamorphoses into different characters. But she'd be half-elven like myself, so the ears would be a dead giveaway at least. Was your possessed mannequin played by a an elf (or half-elf)?"
Mikal Karoly |
"Well, I will ask her after tonight's performance. Are you going to the show this evening?"
NotPFS Wreck |
Wreck arrived. It was night. But to his one working eye, it was not a hinderence. He adjusted his mask. Bone, shaped in the form of a great white wolf of the north. But only one eye hole. The other carved to resemble that of a wolf. No need for people to see a scarred and stitched eye.
He knew he wasnt the smartest. Or the brightest. And well. By everyone elses standards, ugly. But being an orc. That was expected.
He checked the clothing and cloak. Yes. It covered as much a possible. Hopefully folks wont just yell ORC! And try to kill him. His sword strapped to his side, his shield on his back. He approached the festivities. Trying to look like one there to enjoy the party

"Well, I will ask her after tonight's performance. Are you going to the show this evening?"
"I suppose so."
Gyorgy Elberion |
I am up early, helping a few neighbours to erect tents and hang decorations.
Then I get back to Luba's house and help with Aishe and Luca's breakfast, getting them excited about the day with little hints about the stalls I have seen.
When we finally get going we are a little late for the first speech, Luba having shuffled along 'at my own speed, thank you' so Luca and Aishe take turns sitting on my shoulders and I tease them that Hemlock was looking at them when he told everyone to behave.
After some games and dancing Perform (dance): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13 I escort a tired Luba to a neighbours house for a spot of tea, cake and gossip. When I leave she presses a few silver coins in my palm and tells, "Have some fun, and send your cousins home as early as you like."
With a peck on the cheek for Luba, I whirl back to the festival.
Clea Starshine |
Clea felt the day was going very well. The story of Desna, and the blind child she had heard before, of course, but the releasing of all those butterflies was very good.
I wonder how they caught so many? she thought.
She wandered through the festivities, enjoying the sights and sampling foods.
Gyorgy Elberion |
Thinking that I recognise Clea from the road Gyorgy is also Varisian and spends much time with his family's caravan, I'll let you decide if he is correct or not, I give a playfully elaborate bow and offer her a taste of the food I just bought, "What news from the road?

world building a bit here. The idea that Varisians refer to each other as cousins (an informal salutation denoting a shared culture) and clea's last name showing her clerical afiliation rather than her caravan family name.
'Gar' Duncrick |
Gar is up early as usual and spends the morning in the shipyard getting in a little work. It is not so weird that he is there by himself as he often is the last to leave at night. But today he knows the others will not be coming with the festival going on.
With lunch coming on he heads into town to take up Mieko's offer of free food. He has paid her enough for his daily lunches that he does not feel guilty have one large meal for free.
He parks himself on the steps of the cathedral and offers visitors a thrilling tale of how the ship workers helped lay the great timbers that support the roof. This became a playful rivalry with the fellow volunteers responsible for the stone masonry of the high walls.
The games do pull him away for a short while to get in on the knife throwing although he wished to use an axe. The smaller blade flies too easily off target.

Gyorgy will send his young cousins home when the light starts to fade or they start to tire. Many-Faced GM can decide whether that is before or after any plot progression.

After the games Gar settles in again at the Rusty Dragon's booth. Although the food is free, he makes sure to tip generously.
When he sees Ameiko pass by with an empty tray after delivering ales to thirsty villagers, Gar reaches out and hooks her sleeve to pull her close. In a laughing tone he jokes, "Say Ameiko, why is it the Festival stew is so much better than what you serve us? You trying to sucker in some more marks unaware of the liquid iron rations you normally serve us."

As the sun begins to set, Father Zantus once again takes the podium. Pulling a thunderstone out of the inside of his robes and tosses it down. A sharp retort, like the crack of distant thunder, slices through the excited crowd as the sun's settling rays paint the western sky. A stray dog that has crawled under a nearby wagon to sleep starts awake, and the buzz of two dozen conversations quickly hushes as all heads turn toward the central podium, where a beaming Father Zantus has taken the stage. He clears his throat, takes a breath to speak, and suddenly a woman's scream slices through the air.
A few moments later, another scream rises, then another. Beyond them, a sudden surge of strange new voices rises-high pitched, tittering shrieks that sound not quite human. The crowd parts and something low to the ground races by, giggling with disturbing glee as the stray dog gives a pained yelp and then collapses with a gurgle, it's throat cut open from ear to ear. As blood pools around it's head, the raucous sound of a strange song begins, chanted from shrill, scratchy voices. The gathered villagers begin to panic.
"Goblins chew and goblins bite,
goblins cut and goblins fight,
stab the dog and cut the horse,
goblins eat and take by force!
Goblins race and goblins jump,
goblins slash and goblins bump,
burn the skin and mash the head,
goblins here and you be dead!
Chase the baby, catch the pup,
bonk the head to shut it up.
Bones be cracked, flesh be stewed,
we be goblins, you be food!"
Whatever killed the dog continued moving and now hides behind one of the wagons, with several other pairs of eyes.
Combat has been initiated.

The Many-Faced GM |
As the screams of alarm echo throughout the town, goblins begin pouring out of what seems like every possible hiding spot available, out from bushes, underneath wagons, in between buildings, and even out from under tables of food.
While most of the townsfolk flee in panic, several of them remain firm in their resolve and pull out daggers, ready to defend their town with their lives. They group up and band together finding strength in numbers and advance on the goblin tribes. Father Zantus hops off of the stage and hustles into the middle of the remaining townspeople.
The goblins, almost in unison, launch their shortspears. Two volleys of obsidian tipped shortspears fly through the air as two groups of goblins emerge. Several find perch in the townsfolk, filling the ground with warm blood. The goblins cackle with sadistic glee as the first blood is spilled.

The Many-Faced GM |
The goblin topples to the ground, blood flowing freely from his cracked skull. Meanwhile, two goblins circle around Wreck stabbing wildly. One of the shortspears finds it's way past Wreck's armor and shield. It pierces deeply and part of the jagged obsidian breaks off in the wound causing excessive bleeding. More goblins continue to poke and stab at the townsfolk and even manage to draw blood occasionally. A few of the townsfolk, fighting for their homes as well as their lives, continue to fight on against the goblins. One goblin tries to stab Gar but fails to hit the target.
Wreck takes 5 points of piercing damage and 1 point of bleed damage as a goblin breaks his spear off inside of the orc.
