Apologies. This is an invitation-only game. This thread is simply to keep Character Creation away from other stuff. Thanks for your understanding.

Character Creation Rules:

  • Bloodlines only for Races (Please see Campaign Info)
  • 1 set of 4d6-drop-the-lowest rolls, 3.5 style. 1 Three Dragon Ante Tarot Reading at 25pts (see Dragon Magazine 346 for details), and if you don't like either of those results, you can do a 20pt buy.
  • 1 "Regional" Trait (forthcoming), 1 Normal Trait, and 1 Campaign Trait (forthcoming, or custom)
  • Any Paizo core material accepted. Permission required for 3.5 or 3rd party material, as well as homebrew material.
  • May choose to roll or take average Starting Cash
  • All alignments allowed. Please be aware that I won't cater to stupidity (if you're caught stealing in a place where they cut off hands for stealing, be prepared to have your hands removed.)
  • A bonus feat selected from the following list: Acrobatic, Alertness, Animal Affinity, Athletic, Cosmopolitan, Deceitful, Deft Hands, Strength of Body*, Insightful Reflexes*, Force of Personality*, Magical Aptitude, Persuasive, Self-Sufficient, Stealthy, Skill Focus.

*These feats are from 3.5. Essentially each allows you to switch one stat for a different stat in Saves. (Str instead of Con, Int instead of Dex, Cha instead of Wis)

  • Also, some character creation things I would like to see:

  • Description
  • Personality
  • Background (see below)

Character Backgrounds should contain, either explicitly or implicitly:

  • A reason to be in Corail, specifically Lord's Landing (the capitol), a port city.
  • One NPC that figures prominently in your life.
  • Three significant events in your life
  • A clear reason why you would get involved in the Khallan civil war
  • How your character makes a living

  • Still weighing things. In the meantime, my mind is settling towards a cavalier concept...

    rolls:

    4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 1, 5) = 10 = 9
    4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 6, 4) = 12 = 11
    4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 4, 3) = 9 = 8
    4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 6, 4) = 17 = 14
    4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 1, 5) = 15 = 14
    4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 5, 5) = 19 = 16
I'll probably go for 20 pts buy. I'll see what I can find about the 3-dragon ante method.

Are you supposed to roll the stats in order or can you assign them where you want them?

Just my advice about the 3-dragon ante method: Since it's 25pts, it tends to make powerful, but inaccurate characters. It's best for someone who hasn't decided what they want to play. Also, I will doing the reading in person and posting the results.

Also, DW, funny. I'm playing a Cavalier in your game, you play a Cavalier in mine. xD

You can assign them as you please Lyn.

I also just realized that all the Domains for the gods are 3.5. They will be updated soon as well.

    4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 6, 1) = 17
    4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 1, 2) = 10
    4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 2, 2) = 9
    4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 4, 2) = 10
    4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 2, 4) = 12
    4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 6, 1) = 12

    So...
    16
    9
    8
    9
    10
    11

    Yep, the dice....they hate me.

For racial that would be +2 Str, +2 Dex, -2 Wis
And for being a preteen that's -2 Str and +2 Dex

    Str 8
    Dex 14
    Con 11
    Int 9
    Wis 7
    Cha 16

Remember Lyn, if you don't like the roll you can do standard point buy with 20pts.

    GM Fireclaw wrote:

Thinking about it. I want to compare what the results of that would be to see if it's really that big of a difference. :)

    The Exchange

    4d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 6, 5) = 14 13
    4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 5, 5) = 19 15
    4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 3, 1) = 9 8
    4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 6, 6) = 20 17
    4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 1, 2) = 11 10
    4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 2, 4) = 13 11

Hmm. I might just go with that 20 point buy, but I'm not sure yet. I don't think you ever answered my question concerning the tech level and whether Pistol Magus would be acceptable.

Well, finally decided on an avatar. I tried to avoid picking one with outright pale skin, but there just aren't many that fit the race.
I'll get to work on design now. :P

Oh sorry Edgar, I answered it in sorta a passive way, by editing the campaign info. Forgot to direct you to it. Here is the relevant sections of text:

    Tech stuffs:

  • The only firearms that exist in the world are from Sannatus. The making of the firearms is an extremely closely guarded secret.
Sannatus (Analadia): This ex-Nethysian state northwest of the old empire has massive veins of nullstone running across its countryside, creating a field of dampened magic. This has caused the Sannati to turn to technology to compensate. Possessing primitive firearms and railways, they are defensively formidable. They are ruled by several powerful merchant families, and guard their secrets closely
  • If you can find a way around the dampened magic and your ability to learn, it's fine.

I see no problem with the Pistol Mage thus far, except that normally when a Magus is spellstriking, he takes his weapon attack as his free attack.. the tradeoff there is that he has to attack against non-touch AC. The gun... bypasses that. I can't see a way around it without breaking the idea.

As far as the tech level; the world is pretty high-magic world. Like... very high magic. This has... reduced the need for tech. It's less than Golarian for sure, EXCEPT for Sannatus, where there is a dampened magic field.

    3-dragon spread:

Not sure I got the gist of it...
    1.Nature: 1d20 ⇒ 20; 1d3 ⇒ 2 = Dragonslayer
    2. Spirit: 1d20 ⇒ 10; 1d3 ⇒ 1 = Old Brass
    3. Body: 1d20 ⇒ 17; 1d3 ⇒ 3 = The Priest
    4. Mind: 1d20 ⇒ 4; 1d3 ⇒ 2 = Adult Black
    5. Nurture: 1d20 ⇒ 18; 1d3 ⇒ 2 = Archmage
    6. Str: 1d20 ⇒ 4; 1d3 ⇒ 2 = reroll = The Fool
    7. Dex: 1d20 ⇒ 20; 1d3 ⇒ 1 = reroll = Old Blue
    8. Con: 1d20 ⇒ 4; 1d3 ⇒ 1 = Old Black
    9. Int: 1d20 ⇒ 8; 1d3 ⇒ 2 = Adult Bronze
    10. Wis: 1d20 ⇒ 12; 1d3 ⇒ 1 = Dracolich
    11. Chr: 1d20 ⇒ 15; 1d3 ⇒ 1 = Princess
    reroll 1: 1d20 ⇒ 11; 1d3 ⇒ 2
    reroll 2: 1d20 ⇒ 2; 1d3 ⇒ 1

Now I just have to figure out what it means...

Okay...definitely going with the point buy.
After applying racial and age mods, I ended up with

    Str 11
    Dex 16
    Con 13
    Int 14
    Wis 7
    Cha 16

I can do that for you DW. Give me a minute.

No worries, I'll have fun resolving it. We can compare results though. I just downloaded the pdf and trying to make sense of it. Don't know if I'll have time today.

    Dark Archive

Sounds interesting just wondering what that Dragon Tarot thing is since I have no access to that Magazine issue or magazine at all.

I would also like to know some more of the setting in general, I'm interested in playing IF I get chosen to do so.

Sorry Deiros, it's an invitation only game. As far as the setting goes, it's mostly my brother and I's homebrew 6 year brain-child thing.

    The Exchange

Hmm. I'll work on making the pistol magus work. I've got a few ideas, but nothing too fleshed out atm.

    Str: 14
    Dex: 13
    Con: 14
    Int: 14
    Wis: 14
    Cha: 12

    So.... Monk? XD

Lol! Thanks so much! I'll think about what I want from these.

I am fairly certain this character is complete. I'll go over it again later, though. :)
I hope what I did with the Masterwork Tool is alright--I've never bought one before. If it won't do, I'll just get rid of it.

Haha! I'm lying in bed, about to fall asleep, when I realize I made a mistake in my backstory.
My character once had trouble with polearm-swinging kobolds, prompting him to get a longspear.
There are no kobolds. Old habits die hard. I also nearly had goblins in place of hornets. XD
I'm too lazy to change it to 'bandits', but I will in the morning. Sorry about that. :P

Hmmmm. I am thinking about a member of the old guard, a secret Khallian loyalist who doesn't really realize how brutal the regime really is. His sheltered aristocratic upbringing kept him distanced from the reality of the regime.

    4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 1, 5) = 1211
    4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 4, 1) = 1211
    4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 5, 4) = 1615
    4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 6, 3) = 1815
    4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 1, 6) = 1312
    4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 6, 5) = 1916

Not bad. I think I will work with these. The character will be unblooded. I will dig through the books and see what will work. Something roguish...or perhaps an archer...because he doesn't like getting his hands dirty. Nice clothes, fine food, and he thinks that he is blending in well with the "common folk" to hide his past...reverse robin hood?

    Dark Archive

As much as I love playing Trio, I'd better try someone else for this game.

I'm thinking I'll adapt an old tiefling character of mine (I'll make him your fire bloodline); how do you feel about Red Goblin Game's Noble class? I will admit that even though I have purchased it, I haven't looked at it yet; if you don't like it, could you recommend another Noble class? I know both Thieves World and Dragonlance had nobles as well.

Anyways...here's to dice rolling. *Sigh* The first time in 5 years.
    4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 1, 6) = 16
    4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 1, 1) = 11
    4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 6, 6) = 19
    4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 3, 2) = 13
    4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 3, 3) = 14
    4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 3, 2) = 13

So, at least those are done...and I'll just go ahead and point buy.

Sheesh! This took forever to post not from my computer!

I see you prepared the recruitment thread. Cool. I'll give it a run.

    Rolls:
    4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 6, 3) = 15
    4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 4, 5) = 18
    4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 6, 5) = 17
    4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 1, 6) = 10
    4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 6, 1) = 18
    4d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 4, 1) = 9

    So 13, 15, 16, 9, 17, 8.

Hmm. Not too bad. Though a bit extreme.

This reminds of Avatar: The Last Earthbender. I think I'm leaning towards a caster or multi-class. Can I play a real bastard? You think I'll be able to survive being extremely ruthless and manipulative?

Does anyone want to play a team of bastard noctals that are like The Bloody Mummers in Game of Thrones where we hire out to a particular player in the civil war and act as enforcers, assasins, bodyguards, and the like for pay? It's not often someone sets up a campaign where you have the option of playing some bastards that handle encounters in a different manner than is commonly associated with standard D&D characters.

I'm leaning towards a noctal anti-paladin or priest of Dattalus. He'll be an opportunist seeking power in the chaos. I have to wait for Fireclaw to let me know if that is cool.

@Kobold Cleaver: No worries. No big rush to get stuff ready (yet).

@ZetaGilgamesh: Sounds like an interesting character. You could even go for an inquisitor? I like the idea of a character who doesn't really GET why people would rebel (and obviously the ungrateful bastards need to be taught a lesson).

@Goblins: I can't read the noble cause I don't own it and I don't see it on the SRD. Can you sum it up for me, or direct me to somewhere I can read the class?

@Maddigan: Yes, playing a bastard is survivable, as long as you go about it intelligently. Just like to remind you quickly (since it's not been prominent) that the channelling of Negative Energy isn't considered to be evil in this world. As such, undead are also not inherently evil, though Undead with... hunger tend to be evil because of it (see ghouls, vampires, etc).
Which also means that noctals do not have to be evil to heal themselves.

That being said, I like your thought. Dattalus is sort of a lesser god, but that just means his power can only rise. And the Khallans loathe the worship of anyone who isn't Razgriz or one of the Khallan Saints.

How screwed will I be if they find out I worship Dattalus? Are all other religions outlawed? If I were publicaly preaching or my group was a known faction of Dattalus, would I be attacked?

Well, the ones that prejudice do so against ALL other relgions. Luckily for you guys, the country you will be starting in (Corail) has revolted against the Khallan Empire citing a number of reasons, but one of them is religious freedom.

Actually, the new openness in Corail has attracted alot of missionaries from everywhere, so a priest of Dattalus wouldn't be too out of place.

    Dark Archive

GMFireclaw, it was cheap enough that I just went ahead and bought it for you. Uh...Merry Christmas! I hope it works like I think it does; it should have sent you an E-mail saying it is now in your downloads folder.

It did! Will look at it and get back to you. Haha, thanks.

    Dark Archive

Sure! I feel stupid now only because I still haven't looked at it, and I bought you a copy. Now I really hope it's good.

Posting as Pravus, I'm going to be working on his background and such shortly.

I'll have to post character history later, but here is the character at least. :)

Noble class looks pretty good. Not too worried about balance with it. It reminds me of the Dashing Swordsman PrC from Order of the Stick... in a good way.

Some more questions. I'm trying to figure out a character and it's difficult.

    1. Where do we all stand in this mess? You say we're involved in politics. What exactly does that mean? Are we going to be hired by leaders in the rebellion or against the rebellion? Are we the leaders or low level participants?

    2. What will we start off doing? I don't want to make a noble and be some hireling for people I probably wouldn't hire out to. If I'm a noble, I run them, they don't run me. So if this is more of a hire out to someone else, I want to make sure I make a character of appropriate social standing. Or it won't feel like I'm really playing someone of that social status.

    3. Are we all working together? Or will some of us be together and some of us be against each other? In otherwards, are we starting off as a party or we will have separate story arcs going?

Need more information before making a character concept.

I'm still definitely interested. I just need to get caught up on everything and figure out a character concept.

    Rolls:
    4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 4, 5) = 16 13
    4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 4, 5) = 16 15
    4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 5, 2) = 11 10
    4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 3, 5) = 11 10
    4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 3, 6) = 17 14
    4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 3, 4) = 16 13

Could I get a 3-Dragon Ante Spread before I choose to do a 20-Point buy? My rolls came out a bit low.

Good questions Maddigan and I'll have answers soon, but my weekend has been very busy, and I have to work back-to-back shifts today, so I will post tomorrow evening after my nap. xD

Ouch. Too much work. Haha. Sounds good.

    Maddigan wrote:
    Questions about the campaign.

See, the thing about this is, I don't have a plan. At least, not a full one. What I have is a sandbox, a bunch of important NPCs, and an inital plot hook to bring the PCs together. Where you guys take this is totally up to you. My initial plot hook will have you guys working for the Corailites (the rebellious faction), but you guys can take it any way you wish from there.

I am very willing to work in individual stories to the campaign and adapt it to suit.

As far as the party as a whole, again that will be up to you guys. I will put you all in the same room with roughly the same objectives to begin with. Where you guys take it from there is up to you. That's the beauty of PBP: if you guys decide to separate and do your own thing, that's your choice. Obviously, it will complicate things, but that's something I'm fairly prepared for.

I hope I've answered most of your questions with that, and please let me know if I missed something or something is still unclear or vague. I'm writing sort of a "player's guide" so you guys have an idea of where you'll be standing and your campaign traits. Sound good?

Also, I've had little feedback on the worldmap... does it not work properly? Kobold said he couldn't read the tags but it should work if you download it, no? Not sure, first time using Picasa (choose that one cause it doesn't have an upload limit).

@Joshua: I will have a 3-dragon ante spread for you soon.

    How do I download it?

If you click the picture at the link, it should bring up a black-ish border. At the bottom there's an options menu. There's a "Download Full-Size" button. Tell me if that doesn't work.

    The Exchange

I fiddled around with some things regarding the pistol magus, but nothing felt right for me, and I made a witch, but it wasn;'t something that I could get behind. I will, however, be watching this PBP from the sidelines. Have fun.

I still like the idea of the tory. He is a good guy, smart enough, not the wisest, a bit arrogant at times, and doesn't like getting his hands dirty unless its for a good cause. Fine wine, fine food, fine clothes, mostly as a result of his upbringing.

He just happens to be friends with Corailites (other PCs). This has put him in the interesting postion where his connections with the Corailites have kept his head on his shoulders, he just is oblivious to this fact. His friends think that he is harmless and mostly ignorant, but fear that he will say the wrong thing at the wrong time and get his head removed.

@Fireclaw: Has the new nation changed its government style? Is it still arisocratic? If it is undergoing a democratic change is it in the first phases of a Terror?

Think more American revolution, less French. Except in this case, it was Conscription without Representation. One of the main problems the new government faces is a lack of strong leadership, and so corruption one of the big problems it's facing. They did away with the aristocracy (NOT by killing them... exile back to the homeland was the fate of most of the clergy and nobility), but in doing so removed one of the main power structures... and now they're having trouble maintaining control.

Perhaps he and Eftil (the noctal fighter) could be friends. Eftil doesn't have very strong opinions on the war, and could try to keep your guy from doing anything dangerous.

Eftil has a low Wisdom as well, though, and he's a bit of a pushover. So I can easily see such an effort going wrong. XD
