Skip Flaxseed checking in! Unfortunately I'm very limited on what games I can play. Currently the only 1-5 scenario I can do is 06-01 Trial by Machine. Of course, the replayable 1-2 modules are also a possibility for Skip.

Okay, I went ahead and made a Halfling Ninja. I still need to do some minor details (traits) and come up with fluff, although I was planning on running him less Eastern style and more as a cleaner.

Almost 200 years ago, when the land that was to become Nirmathas was still a vassal of the empire of Cheliax, the northern reaches of the Fangwood were a wild and untamed place. The crusades that laid low the Whispering Tyrant to the north were a distant memory, and those who remained were intent upon keeping the orcs of Belkzen and the remaining undead from Ustalav in check. As a result, the great forest was full of danger, from marauding orcs to deadly predators, making it unsafe for merchants hoping to trade with the growing community of Skelt in the foothills of the Mindspin Mountains to the west.

Ekat Kassen was a famous halfling adventurer and fortune seeker whose travels took him all over the region around Lake Encarthan. In 4522 and he decided to settle down, and using a sizable portion of his fortune, he set out to tame a small area of the Fangwood on the banks of the Tourondel River, making it a natural stopover for those traveling up and down the river to Skelt. For the next 10 years, the town, which was then known as Kassen’s Hold, grew and prospered.

All that changed when Asar Vergas came to Kassen’s Hold with a host of mercenaries under his command. Asar was an old companion of Ekat, and the two had traveled together for some time before splitting up just after Ekat’s last adventure. Over the years, Asar became sure that Ekat had cheated him after that adventure. Promising great wealth to his mercenaries, Asar raided the town relentlessly for 2 months. Finally, the townsfolk managed to locate Asar’s camp in an ancient crypt deep in the forest, and Ekat himself went out to deal with his old companion. The battle was terribly bloody, and only a few townsfolk survived to tell the tale. In the end, Asar was slain and his mercenaries scattered, but Ekat suffered a mortal wound. He died 2 days later, on the 11th day of Neth, 4535.

In honor of their beloved founder, the townsfolk buried Kassen in the ancient crypt, interring his bones in a place of honor, above the simple sarcophagi used to inter Asar, his mercenaries, and the townsfolk that lost their lives in the bitter struggle. They placed an eternal flame above Kassen’s final resting place, so that all who visited might find warmth in the wilderness.

Over the years, the Crypt of the Everflame has become an important part of the history of the town, now simply called Kassen. The townsfolk view the crypt as a memorial to those difficult first years of the town’s history. Every autumn, a few of the townsfolk make a pilgrimage to the crypt to light a lantern from the flame and bring it back to town, where it is preserved all winter, a symbol of the town’s resilience. Most years, the town mayor and a group of dignitaries perform this quest. Every few years, however, a handful of younger townsfolk are given the honor of lighting the lantern. Many see this as a passage into adulthood, a taste of adventure before settling down to work and marriage. The quest starts out as a solemn ceremony in town, where the townsfolk gather to wish the adventurers luck, just as it was when Kassen himself left to fight the mercenaries. When the adventurers return a few days later, the town holds a great celebration in their honor.

This year, the elders of Kassen have been chosen you and a few others to make the pilgrimage and perform the ceremony at the Crypt of the Everflame.

Thomas Linseed fiddles with the heavy chains on the scarred wolf next to him. Heh, Skip Flaxseed. Agents might be a bit of a stretch, don't you think?

He adjusts his flamboyant hat (just like in the picture) before laughing. Haven't seen you since I was sent away from Cassomir by father... He sticks out his hand for Skip to shake.

Skip and Thomas chat, their voices almost lost in the constant din of the Seven Silvers, the local tavern of the town of Kassen. Some of you are locals, others have arrived over the years as students or apprentices, and the town is small enough that you all have met before, and some are likely long time friends, or perhaps rivals.

For the purposes of this module, it is assumed the PCs grew up in Kassen, or have been living there for a few years. Each PC has an associated NPC that is a sort of mentor to them, so those not originally from Kassen have a connection to it. Also, since this is the Halffinders themed group, I am taking some artistic license with background of the town (and turning it into a halfling community). This is only cosmetic and doesn't change the module.
@Skip: with this in mind, maybe there is a branch of the Flaxseed family in Kassen, or Skip could have been sent here to study magic with Holgast, the local wizard.
@Thomas: Maybe the Linseeds are here as well, or perhaps Thomas was sent to study under Arnama Lastrid, the local ranger.

Perfect. The Linseeds are from Cassomir to mirror the Flaxseeds, however this character concept was more of a "sent away for education", so the ranger schooling works. Would it be possible to have a Kuthite temple here?

Skip was probably sent to study with Holgast.

Kassen is small, with only one small temple. Officially it is dedicated to Erastil, but a few niches have been set aside for other deities (though Zon-Kethon would probably not be happily accepted).

"Then I suppose you are preparing that for your wolf?"

Thomas looks up to find Arnama Lastrid standing in the dim light nearby. "Short Change! A round of milk for the boys here!"

Short Change, the nickname for a halfling waiter that works at the tavern, looks up from the bar, then laughs.

***

Some background on your mentors.

Holgast (Skip's mentor)
On the eastern edge of town is a single tower, leaning slightly to the south, made of bricks and timber. This is the home of Holgast, the town’s local sage and mystic. Although Holgast is very knowledgeable, he is old and quite forgetful, meaning that the townsfolk (the mayor in particular) only consult him if the need is truly great. Holgast spends most of his days wandering about his tower, reading books, smoking his pipe, and taking naps. Once a week, he wanders into town to purchase supplies and provisions with his seemingly inexhaustible reserve of perfect golden coins, which he claims came from an immense hoard some years ago. Holgast makes for a frustrating mentor. His lessons are erratic and old fashioned. His apprentices are required to do all manner of chores for the privilege of learning from him, while he sleeps the day away and teaches very little. Those who have learned anything from him have done so by sneaking into the wizard’s spellbooks while he is napping.

Arnama Lastrid (Thomas' mentor)
Nirmathas is known for its rangers, valiant woodsmen who have spent years carving out a nation and protecting it from foreign and domestic threats. Arnama is one such ranger. She is tough, quiet, and more than willing to risk her life to protect the people of Kassen and the country she has grown to love. Arnama was orphaned during the early wars with Molthune, growing up in a band of adopted parents. These rangers taught her everything she knows. When Arnama came of age, she left the band to find out where her parents came from. That trek led her to Kassen, where she has remained ever since, living in their old house just outside town. Arnama is a skilled ranger but not the best teacher. Those who have tried to learn from her find her impatient and without discipline. She does, however, excel at teaching by example, leading her charges on far-ranging patrols and hunts.

Father Rantal Prasst (Kryspi's mentor)
The small town of Kassen has only one temple and it is devoted primarily to Erastil, but Father Prasst allows those who worship other friendly gods to pray at the temple as well. While Father Prasst does not offer services in the names of these deities, there are small shrines to other gods set up in some of the alcoves. Father Prasst is a kind and understanding man, but he is hard when it comes to the defense of the community. He is quite young, and many in the community do not put too much faith in his council, except in spiritual matters.

Jimmy “Short Change” Iggins (Knu's mentor)
Those who frequent the Seven Silvers tavern know to count their coins before they leave the table, especially if they have been served by “Short Change,” the halfling waiter who has a propensity for giving less change than is due. Although Jimes is genuinely kind and helpful to all the locals, he just can’t help but end up with some of their possessions at the end of the night, be it a few coins or a loose dagger. Most of the townsfolk are quite aware of this and do not take too much offense if something goes missing. After all, they know where the missing goods went. Anyone who works with Jimes at the Seven Silvers is sure to get a host of tips and tricks from this good-natured thief, who thinks that a little petty theft is all in good fun.

Ilimara Oniri (Roscoe's mentor)
While most of the halflings in Kassen were born and raised near town, Ilimara was born in Qadira in a town with a name most of the humble folk of Kassen could not even pronounce. Not surprisingly, this beautiful and exotic halfling keeps to herself. She has lived on the outskirts of town for almost 8 years now, claiming that she is trying to find peace in her heart. Ilimara has had a number of acolytes over the years, each hoping to learn the secrets of Irori that Ilimara claims to practice, but so far, all have abandoned her tutelage for a simpler road. Anyone who learns from her, however, quickly uncovers that there is a darkness hiding in Ilimara, and only those with an iron will can bear to be around it.

Moltus Vargidan (Culsar's mentor)
If you ask a dozen folk in Kassen who the strangest family in town is, you would get the same answer 12 times: the Vargidans. This old family has a touch of magic in its blood, with each one of the children showing some sorcerous talent. Where this magic comes from is a mystery, and the family refuses to speak of such things in mixed company. Lording over the family is the eccentric patriarch, Moltus Vargidan. This aging hafling has white hair that trails down to his knees, and he can often be found wandering around muttering to himself. Those who come to learn from Moltus have often been forced to learn things for themselves, because the old man shares few of his secrets, and some believe that his grip on reality is slowly slipping.

Culsar seems to be enjoying the morning before the great journey of his young life. Knowing Moltus, he put the town up to this! He probably thinks that we'll all get lost and he'll have to come to the rescue or something. He needs to remember his age.

Finding the others he quickly waves hello to his fellow halfling adventurers. Ooh! I'll take one of those delicious treats if I may! If offered, Culsar will happily consume the snack. Ah, that hit the spot! You really oughta have one, Thomas. Thanks, Kryspi !

Knu Picklebrew steps in through a side door near the bar, wiping his hands with a butcher's rag to rub the blood off his knuckles. He then walks back to the kitchen, returns the borrowed cloth to the cook, grabs a mug of shine and comes back into the bar area. He places a few gold coins next to Short, "They had half their tab. The other half later. If they come back.", he then greets the others with a lift of the mug.

Due to his stouter and shorter traits of deep halflings, Knu was often mistaken for a human midget or a small dwarf. Also common to his subrace, he had naturally dark skin and a mustache-less chin beardwhich added to thick sideburns appeared as full beard. He kept his head trimmed to near baldness, not to hide halfling traits or bolster dwarven ones; only Short Change would know the reason.

Cade, I'm making a change to your mentor since you are playing a different class.

Guard Captain Gregor Wisslo (Cade's mentor)
The town of Kassen has never truly known the horrors of the war with Molthune, but occasional raiding parties from Belkzen do sometimes pose a threat. As such, the town has been watched over for many years by Wisslo, who serves as guard captain. Gregor is a staunch halfling who believes in schedules and regiment over ingenuity and spontaneity, much to the chagrin of the town’s residents. As an aging fighter, Gregor is a qualified teacher, but his lessons are rigid and his discipline harsh. The guards he has trained are quite skilled, but they secretly detest the old man, calling him names behind his back (Captain Is-Slow is the current favorite).

"Oh, I'm sure that they're just testing us to see how patient we are. Father Prasst says that patience is a virtue needed by all, given to few, and earned by even less." Kryspi keeps nodding her head slightly as she says all of this. It's as if there is music playing that only she can hear.

Guard Captain Gregor Wisslo turns to his guards like a general, walking the line of halflings with a stiff back, poking the belly of one and tapping the jaw another. "No more pastries! Trim those whiskers! Disgraceful!"

Stopping, he eyes Cade for a moment. "Hmm.. Watchman Greenleaf, I'm almost proud of you. Conduct yourself well in the ceremony and I might consider you for a promotion. For now, you are dismissed! Clean yourself up and arrive in the square promptly at noon!"

Guard Captain Wisslo turns in his heel and marches toward the door with his other two guards in tow. Before they reach it, Wisslo stops suddenly and stares at Picklebrew. He then turns to the guard behind him. "What was the description those merchants gave you a short time ago?"

Before either can answer a white-haired old halfling barges through the door and walks straight into them, getting tangled up briefly with flailing arms and clarinet armor. "Bah! Get outer me way P!sslow!" Moltus Vargidan shouts, then whirls around to face Short Change, raising his hands and causing a few sparks to sizzle between them. "Don't try tur sneak up on me, my familiar's like havin eyes in the back of me backside!" Moltus has never had a familiar, but no one has dared challenge him on that fact, and Wisslo, like most halflings in Kassen, steers clear of the old sorcerer whenever possible, and and takes the moment of distraction to steer himself right out the door.

Meanwhile, Short Change puts on his best innocent face and offers Moltus a drink, which the sorcerer accepts with a sudden glee as a child might do when offered sweets.

As Short Change departs, Moltus notices his apprentice with the other selected for the ceremony sitting nearby. "You still here? Was hopin you'd be lost somewhere in the forest by now."

Kryspi dances back across the room to set down the confections. "I'm ready to go. But, aren't we supposed to go out for the farewell first?"

Cade finishes second breakfast and the young group heads to the town square.

The bells atop the Temple of Erastil toll their midday song, echoing throughout the quiet town of Kassen. As the peals begin to fade, the first of the townsfolk make their way into the square, dressed in black, as if attending a funeral. They slowly fill the square, moving quietly across the cold, hard ground, their eyes downcast and mournful. After a few moments, a murmur passes through the crowd and it slowly parts to let Mayor Uptal and Father Rantal Prasst through. The mayor leads the way with a tarnished silver lantern. Behind him, Father Prasst leads an old pony dragging a cart laden with backpacks and supplies.

Once he reaches the center of the crowd, Mayor Uptal stops and calls out to the assembled townsfolk. “Once again the winter winds blow through the Fangwood, marking the end of another harvest. There are wolves in the woods, howling at our walls, and serpents in our shadows, waiting to strike. Just as it was one hundred and seventy-four years ago, when Kassen himself left these walls to protect us, so it is today. Where are the heroes? Where are the brave folk that will venture out to Kassen’s tomb and retrieve the flame to keep this community safe for another winter?”

Moltus steps forward from the crowd and gestures impatiently toward your group. "Are ye blind? They be right there, damned fool!"

Those gathered chuckle, despite the serious nature of the event. "Yes, yes, we know that!" Father Prasst chides the old sorcerer. "It was a rhetorical question, you nincompoop!"

"What's religion got to do with it?" Moltus stamps his foot and looks ready to roll up his sleeves, but some of his family intercept and lead him back to the crowd.

Clearing his throat, Mayor Uptal turns back to your group. "We have gathered supplies to aid you on your journey." He gestures to the cart which has a backpack for each member of the group. He then raises the lantern. "Who is to have the honor of carrying the lantern?"

Each backpack contains 5 days’ worth of rations, a small tent, a winter blanket, and a full waterskin. In addition, the following items are spread out among the PCs’ backpacks, distributed as evenly as possible: 50 feet of hempen rope, a box containing tinder and three tindertwigs, a labeled potion of cure light wounds, three torches, a grappling hook, a small bottle of local brandy, and the Trail Map that leads from Kassen to the Crypt of the Everflame.

Thomas will reach forward and grab the hempen rope, the heaviest of the items, and strap it to his pack before grabbing the lantern.

This is all I will need. Let the weaker ones carry the light stuff. Thomas boisterously proclaims.

Skip will grab the trail map and the tinder and tindertwigs to carry in his pack. He will also roll up the winter blanket and attach it to his pack.

"Excellent! How kind of you all! Is there anything else? Any advice? Or should we be on our way?"

Culsar will not try to carry any additional items as he wants to stay light on his feet if at all possible.

I guess we can head on out! You've got the map, lead us the way!

The Exchange

Thug 1

Picklebrew shows up appearing ready to go to war with a suit of aged studded leather, cold iron spear and heavy crossbow. In addition, he silently grabs a backpack, the potion, the brandy, one torch, binds them all together and tests the weight in addition to his own gear. Picking up the hook, he says to Thomas, ”You sure don't want this other half?”

Kryspi dances quietly to an unheard beat as she strings her bow. "I'm fine without a torch. I have a pie recipe that could use the brandy, though."

"Very well then. I can carry what's left. I suggest we get going. With only a half of day to start, we'll want to make sure we find a safe place to camp before dark."

”I'll take my share before they go into pastries”, Picklebrew stern says and shoves the bottle deeper into his bag, ”You plan on baking pies in the woods?”.

Once the party has started on their way and have reached the outskirts of town, Culsar will summon his eidolon for the journey.

So are we really going on this so-called quest? The creature asks his question as if it were a bored child.

Yes, we are! Everybody is here and we're finally on our way. Just calm down and enjoy the adventure, would you?

I have no idea how to play this summoner or the eidolon so bear with me as I figure it out.

The mayor once again speaks to the townsfolk. “I present to you the brave heroes who will follow in Kassen’s footsteps to retrieve the Everflame! Some of them may not return, but I say to you that their sacrifice shall not be forgotten. Go, brave heroes, and do not return until you have the eternal fire!” With that, the mayor points to the south, the direction of Kassen’s tomb. The townsfolk begin waving goodbye with cold, solemn looks on most of their faces.

***

The crypt is located roughly 40 miles south of Kassen, meaning that PCs traveling on foot arrive at the end of the following day. While this area of the Fangwood is mostly safe, the journey is not without incident, and just 2 hours outside of Kassen, the heroes have an entirely unexpected encounter...

The narrow path winds through the raking claws of the trees, now bereft of their leaves, which crunch loudly underfoot. Suddenly a trio of snarling humanoids leaps out onto the road ahead, all greenish skin and fearsome tusks, bellowing vulgar challenges.

Their sudden appearance catches everyone off-guard, except for Cade, whose mentor-ship under Guard Captain Wisslo (and the Captain's penchant for surprise inspections) has surprisingly paid off.

Assuming that we're not in a surprise round, Cade will charge the lead Orc.

Cade shouts at the sight of danger, "Lookout! Orcs ahead!". Sprinting into action, Cade charges towards the lead orc, unsheathing his longsword. "For Kassen!".
