GM of Set |
Our heroes have defeated the spiders, yet, there are more to this tower than just one level, they hear sounds coming from the floor above them, they seek to investigate. The go up the stairs.
Infront of them seems to be a store room of some sort. Crates and boxes packed all around. This might be a new shipment of something. Will they investigate the boxes, or simply travel up to the next level?
Now back to our adventure!
Bartleby Nutmeg |
"Well all its great to be back here again with you all. It's been a while but I think its time we try to make some more progress here."
Bartleby is mounted on his companion Martin and flanked by two bloody lion skeletons.
"Hey guys, I will beam some detect magic around, maybe there is something interesting in here, or some clues."
DM, is anything written on the crates or boxes?
Riggar |
Riggar, will stand next to only of the bloody lions...even if they give with the heebie-jeebies and he wants to destroy them.
How the hell can you stand being around those filthy lions? Undead are an abomination, if I didn't know ye as well as I do..., he doesn't finish but knows he gets the point.
Bartleby Nutmeg |
Bartleby explains in his squeaky high pitched voice, "Yeah I know, its unfortunate undead get such a bad rap. These are just some animated bones though basically, and really useful! Some poachers killed the lions, so I felt it fitting to reanimate them and use them against evil! I think its all about intent. Plus these weren't people, I didn't dig up someone's grandma. I guess they are a bit gross, but so is all the other slimy gooey icky mucky blood and guts stuff we encounter smacking monsters around. I guess I got used to it."
Bartleby Nutmeg |
Perception Roll - Bartleby: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Perception Roll - Martin: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Perception Roll Lion #1: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12
Perception Roll Lion #2: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
Riggar |
per: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
k planes: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Riggar doesn't see a damn thing, but he listens to the other describe what they are seeing and hearing. He thinks back to the lessons of yore, and tries to recall what type of spiders they may be.
Riggar |
What ye be talkin bout could be a phase spider. They be nasty little buggers, be careful the bite for it damages your physical body. It could be on the ethereal plane right now and can pop in at a moments notice. Be on your guard everyone.
Riggar will ready his morningstar and shield.
Bartleby Nutmeg |
"Hmm fascinating," pipes Bartleby. I guess we should be wary. I wonder if we have any way of locking it down here once it pops out.
Also can we ready an action such that once it appears we can smack it?
Kale "Seascum" |
You can ready an action to attack something as soon as you see it. However, initiative would still be rolled first, so if the spider goes first (whether in a surprise round or regular round or both) then the attack will not happen until your turn--whereas if you roll higher or surprise the spider, you would get to act first. Basically it is not actually a readied action, just stating in advance what you will do.
On the other hand, if the spider disappeared in the middle of a battle after we already had an initiative order, you could ready an action to attack the next thing you see, and if the spider came back within your reach/range before the next round then your readied action would trigger. But that is a different scenario.
Bartleby Nutmeg |
Bartleby will send his lions into the middle of the room around the central stack of crates. He will advise the group that he is doing so, but will amend the plan if others think otherwise.
Kale "Seascum" |
Kale nods. He pauses a moment to activate his Natural AC adaptation then draws a wand and taps himself and Amir with it before moving to the stack of crates and climbing onto it. Amir follows him to stand beside the crates. Kale turns slowly in circles, Guisarme held ready to strike at any unfamiliar shapes. Amir hunches on all fours, every muscle taut with anticipation.
Put Barkskin on Kale and Amir.
Bartleby Nutmeg |
Bartleby has Martin take a 5' step and then attack the spider and one of his lions on the other side to provide flanking:
(10' reach)
Martin bite: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 7 + 2 = 11
Martin claw: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 7 + 2 = 13
Martin claw: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 7 + 2 = 11
I think probably all misses..
Lion #1: Do nothing
Lion #2: 5' move and full attack + flank
Lion bite: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 7 + 2 = 25 + grab
Lion Grapple check: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (7) + 13 = 20 if this beats its CMD then the spider is grappled. If the spider is grappled if will lose 4 to dex ( and 2 to effective AC). It also suffers -2 to hit and all Combat Maneuver checks.
Lion claw: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 7 + 2 = 10
Lion claw: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 7 + 2 = 23
possible damage:
bite damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
claw damage: 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
claw damage: 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Bartleby ride checks for Martin: Guide with Knees, Stay in Saddle, and fight all DC 5 or 10 and autosucceed.
Bartleby will fire and reload his crossbow.
Crossbow attack: 1d20 + 10 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 10 - 4 = 20 (firing into melee)
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3
GM of Set |
Nope, not grabbed. The bite and one claw hits, and your bow attack hits
The Ape does nothing to the large spider, the one lion manage to bite down, but its nimble limbs easily gets lose from the skeleton jaw, one claw manages to tear some of the flesh from the spider, just as a bolt inbeds itself into its frame
spider: 15dmg
Kale "Seascum" |
Sorry, we were waiting on me. I read this on my phone but couldn't mess with the map there and forgot to come back from a computer.
Amir slides to the left and bites at the spider, then swipes at it with his paws. At the same time, Kale steps to his right, his Guisarme clattering to the ground. In a smooth motion he draws two of the blades strapped to his back and slashes at the spider with them.
Amir

MWK Short Sword, attack, flanking, trophy hunter, favored enemy(magical beast): 1d20 + 9 + 2 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 9 + 2 + 1 + 4 = 24
MWK Short Sword, damage, trophy hunter, favored enemy(magical beast): 1d6 + 2 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 2 + 2 + 4 = 12
That's a total of 27 damage from Kale and I think 10 damage from Amir.
Kale "Seascum" |
Kale sheathes his blades and picks up his Guisarme. You don't like that so much, do you?
Good job, Amir. A low rumble comes from Amir's chest. He looks uneasy.
I think that's two move actions. If not, Kale will ready an attack against the Spider if it shows up within reach of his Guisarme again.
Riggar |
Riggar watches as the spider takes a good blow, but then sees it vanish. He grumbles under his breath. He readies an attack against the creature should it reappear.
readied action to attack if it comes into view, charging and moving if need be: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Bartleby Nutmeg |
Not sure if we have an initiative, so maybe it will be dead before Bartleby goes.
Bartleby shrieks as the spider tries to eat him, but then laughs as it missed him and cackling he commands his minions to attack as he fiddles with his crossbow.
Bartleby has his two lions swing around back for flanking and attacking and he and Martin will attack.
Lion #1 Bite attack: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 7 + 2 = 20 + possible Grab
Assuming phase spider AC 17 hoping a hit and a grapple start:
Bite damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Grapple check: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (20) + 13 = 33 vs CMD 25? should grapple...
Lion #1 Claw 1 attack: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 7 + 2 = 12
vs new grappled AC 15 miss
Lion #1 Claw 2 attack: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 7 + 2 = 10

Claw damage: 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Lion #2 Claw 2 attack: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 7 + 2 = 10
vs new grappled AC 15 miss
Martin Claw 1 attack: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 7 + 2 = 18
vs grappled AC 15 hit
Claw damage: 1d6 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12
Martin Claw 2 attack: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 7 + 2 = 17
vs grappled AC 15 hit
Claw damage: 1d6 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13
Martin Bite: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 7 + 2 = 10
vs grappled AC 15 miss
Bartleby fire and reload crossbow
Crossbow Attack into melee: 1d20 + 10 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 10 - 4 = 23
Crossbow damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Mounted combat rolls all autosucceed.
Total Damage: 41 plus grappled spider (unless its not using stock stats or other secret info )
Kale "Seascum" |
Amir bites and claws at the spider with some success; meanwhile Kale takes a step closer and brings his Guisarme down on it hard.
PA Bite, attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Bite trip: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
PA Bite, damage: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
PA Claw 1, attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
PA Claw 1, damage: 1d3 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
PA Claw 2, attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
PA Claw 2, damage: 1d3 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Kale
Guisarme, attack, trophy hunter, favored enemy(magical beast): 1d20 + 10 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 10 + 1 + 4 = 31
Guisarme, damage, trophy hunter, favored enemy(magical beast): 2d4 + 7 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (4, 2) + 7 + 2 + 4 = 19
Got to be at least 39 between the two of them. Too far for Kale to make a full-attack with his blades, so he stuck with the Guisarme.
