I see, so not all dwarves can brew then? Yet another folk tale put to rest haha, very well then, you will one day have to take me to one of your peoples Inns, so I may taste and test myself against what many would claim to be the best drink in this world.

he will then pause for a moment,

hey, my ears aren't THAT pointed, you should see some of the forest elves to the north! they are almost as long as there heads!

Ezra's eyes widen in surprise at the mention of 'taking slaves'. "My good sir, I guarantee on my life that I have never once bought or 'taken' a slave. The two I own are still in Cheliax, and the only reason I own them is because they were my inheritance. Those two are practically my own family and I love them as such." A solemn look passes over Ezra's face. "I can only hope they feel the same about me. They raised me after all. But that's no matter. Even if I was a ruffian who was bound to take slaves, I'm sure that Asmodeus and Abadar both would smite me for being a lawbreaker if the inquisitors and Hell Knights don't get to me first."

Oh boy. I mention I'm a worshipper of Asmodeus and people assume I'm a standard Chelaxian bound to take slaves in ANDORAN of all places. Oh, stereotypes.

Magical Animal

"Bah, who cares about what god who worships? Is actions that count. Ezra has done nothing to me or to any I see here, so he is good man." He grins as he pats the man on the back. "Even if he is not much of a drinker."

Despite his appearance, K'leck seems slightly disturbed. Or, at least, as disturbed as a rather tipsy man with a generally positive outlook in life can be. Although whether this is due to repeatedly bringing down the mood with topics of discord, many people seeming to take issue with the crippled, old man who has thus far done nothing meriting reproach, or just his nearly empty mug of beer is a bit unclear.

Varian chuckles,

you are a confusing people, though I must admit that may come from knowing naught but rumors and hearsay, and the occasional book. Do explain though, how one becomes a slave in your land without being taken? I mean no harm in my questions, merely, curiosity demands me ask.

There are two kinds of slaves in Cheliax. The first kind, I am more sympathetic to; those who are born into it. If you were to ask me, those poor folk never got a chance to prove themselves. They were born with chains. I am inclined to go about a legal means of freeing them. This would involve buying them and then releasing them. The second kind of slaves are criminals. Most crimes that are not punishable by death are punishable by enslavement. Some have a specific number of years they must serve while others are imprisoned for life, like my own: they were convicted thieves."

Ezra takes a deep breath, and huddles in a corner when he notices the funny looks he is getting from the Andoran patrons.

He will then mutter something about his own slaves TECHNICALLY being indentured servants.

Must he keep going on about being a slave?!

So what was the terrible crime your slaves made that condemned them for life?

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16

Ezra senses you are getting uncomfortable a bit and wishes to end the on sensation as soon as possible. He truly was in hostile lands here, perhaps it was best to keep his faith secret like the inquisitors would and try and convert using means rather than openness and honest speech... at least until he had enough to open the Temple. He quickly once again cast enhanced diplomacy and said,

"They tried to steal from a family... and unfortunately for them they targeted that of a former Hell Knight Commander. But enough about Cheliax please! Tell me about Andoran or the mountains!"

diplomacy: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (11) + 16 = 27 it is clear Ezra does not wish to cause hostilities and if worshipping a specific god or being from a specific country would persecute him, he would rather keep the conversation off of himself.

so for theft they are condemned to a life of slavery? That seems just to you? It does not matter how your sugar coat it that is wrong. Slavery is merely an institution used to oppress the poor.

It is the law, and Cheliax's law is written out by Admodeus... who am I to question the will of the divine? If criminals are to be sent to slavery I must simply bow my head and watch as it happens, no matter how unfortunate the circumstances."

The door to the tavern swings open. A knocking can be heard against the door frame as Askrel kicks against it, knocking off days worth off crud and wet dirt.

The elf steps in, glancing over the assortment of out-of-towners. "So this is what the buzz is all about. Wily assortment of fellows," he states to himself and anyone in general. "I hope I'm not late," he proclaims to the dwarf at the bar, as he draws closer.

Male Human Fighter 8/Ranger 12

The Morning Ale. Well, it's not really morning, but I guess some ale wouldn't go amiss. Or food really. Turns out getting food in the wild requires much more effort than buying it from a tavern. Who knew?

I step inside and let my eyes adjust briefly. This place is packed, but not overly rowdy. That's good. Don't want to get in a bar fight before I get in the guild. Plenty of time after that. Hah.

I quickly look over everyone, wondering which will end up being my companions. Over by the bar is a tall fellow, who despite his genial appearance has to be an addict or something, keeps chewing on some leaves. Then I notice the staff and see the tenderness with which he uses his gloved hands. Probably recently got in an accident or something. Makes more sense. Advantage: could probably beat him up. Also, looks to be in constant pain. Disadvantage: he's probably more important than me.

Around the middle of the bar is a well dressed guy with a whip coiled at his waist. He seems to be interested in everybody's conversation and participating easily. Advantage: again, looks like another guy I could probably beat up, though the whip makes me nervous. Disadvantage: prettier than me. Has a whip.

By whip guy is a massive tanned behemoth of a man. He seems to be pretty genial, which is good because he could probably punch a hole through a bull. Advantage: looks too good-natured to be excessively violent. Disadvantage: could use me as a toothpick.

Sitting at the bar and surrounded by a distressing about of empty mugs is a dwarf. He seems to be steadily drinking his way through every drop of alcohol in the village. Oh my. Advantage: not nearly as drunk as him. And given how much he's consuming, probably never will be. Disadvantage: his beard is way better than my jaw-fuzz. And he could probably beat me up.

Drinking with the dwarf is an armed and armored man. Just going by his facial expression he looks like a cocky sob. But given his state of readiness, he probably has reason to be. Advantage: not a cocky sob. Disadvantage: he has probably been in an actual battle. And could kill me. Bother.

On the other side of the man is a little halfling. Ugh. Another of the obnoxiously cheerful and peppy ones too, but something in his eyes makes me reconsider. They're just a little too... I dunno. Then I notice the barmaid and him constantly making eye contact, and the cats grins on their faces. Great. Advantage: not a halfling. Disadvantage: he probably gets laid more than me.

Just inside the doorway is the elf I followed in, being greeted by another elf. The one is more refined looking, with the smooth, charismatic elegance common to their kind. That doesn't detract from the deadly appearance of his sword, or the spellbook I can see poking out of his pack. A mage. Fantastic. I'm already jealous. Advantage: having trouble thinking of one here. Disadvantage: probably superior to me in every way. Fantastic.

The other elf next to him is a stark contrast, with his wild, slightly run-down appearance and obvious sincerity on his face. But his weapons look more than well taken care of, ornate and solid. Advantage: probably more mature than him. Disadvantage: elf, so still probably better than me at everything.

By the time I've finished examining everybody, I've already sat down and ordered some food and drink, quickly devouring it. It's so nice to eat food that you didn't have to skin and gut and cook yourself. I sidle up to the wounded man. He appears to be the best combination of not intimidating and not irritating.

"Is everybody here for the guild? I didn't realize there'd be so many..."

Only now noticing the man who sat next to him, Ezra started to shake his head, seemed to think for a moment then gave a brief nod. "Aye. This tavern is mostly filed with applicants. Even I, a diplomat who has no interest in applying to the guild, have to compete with everyone else for the guild leader's time." Starting to feel the pain in his leg again, Ezra reached for a leaf, popping it in his mouth and washing it down with a glass full of water. "What is your story friend? Another warrior looking to prove both his mettle and metal? Or is there something more to you than meets the eye?"

I already like Hellbound. If anyone should get in, it's him.

Male Human Fighter 8/Ranger 12

Ah, a diplomat. So I was correct in assuming that he was more important than me.

"My story? Hah. Negligible. Up until a mere two weeks ago I was an illustrious member of the peasantry, expert in all matters farm and field related. I decided that was a terrible career path. Now I am a homeless and penniless vagabond, which is more a step sideways than a step up. Spent all my money on this sword and armor," I pat my falcata, sheathed on my hip. Basically just a usefully sized kukri. Superb weapon.

"And so now I'm looking for a way to recoup my losses, and potentially even surpass them. The merc business seems lucrative."

I shrug and lean back in my chair, sighing and taking another swig of my beer.

"Though if this is my competition, I don't stand a chance. My biggest fights have been against fenced in bulls and country yokels..."

I shrug again, scratching at my grizzle. Need to shave my neck at least. Getting itchy.

"But a diplomat eh? That's prestigious. Who are you diplomating for?"

Yes. Listen to the oracle. He's an oracle! It's destiny :| haha thanks man :)

Ezra took another sip of water to wash the taste of the herb out of his mouth. "You'd be surprised about your own worth on the battlefield. I've dealt with mercenaries before and hey ate a varied lot. Magic users, dextrous fighters... those that have roughly the same shape and consistency as a brick wall." He gestured at he vatious people around the tavern as if to illustrate his point.

"As for me, I deal with an organization called the Aspis Consortium. We deal with trade around Cheliax mostly but the group is constantly expanding both in region and in purpose. As of late, we have been uniting various mercenary guilds under the banner of the Consortium. It helps the organization as a whole as well as keeping the smaller guilds afloat since there is less competition amongst the guilds. Interesting. Aspis. Never heard of them before, but I can't imagine they'd have been interested in my little podunk town anyway.

K'leck grins at the newcomer(s?), happy that Yorrick has left off of fighting for now and returned to far more important matters: stories. He calls for more drinks for the newly arrived. "Come Vince-man, no putting self down! You cannot tell man's worth by appearance; all Shoanti know this thing. Is one of first stories we hear."

He waves over more ale. And upon further contemplation, some food for what is quickly becoming, in his mind, quite the party. "Cannot change who gets hired, so is best to enjoy here and now, yes? Ezra was about to note the amount of drinks being passed about but stopped whe he realized that if a number of the applicants were intoxicated, he was much mire likely to have time to visit the leader of the guild. So instead of mentioning it, Ezra only smiled and sipped his water.

a great story indeed! It would be a shame for a guild to not accept as great an orator as thee.

Varian looks around.

To new friends and good times! May we all be accepted!

Askrel takes a spot by the end of the bar nearby the others, forgoing a stool in preference to casually leaning against the firm wood propped up by an elbow. "I'm rarely rejected," he states with a wink.

Ezra felt a brief pain in his head, a feeling of pressure that stayed for a few seconds before suddenly dissipating. He looked to his lunar charts in his journal. The full moon was only a few days away. Looks like he was in for a few nights of headaches and restlessness.

Shaking the thought from his mind, he looked up at Askrel and gave a small smile. "I think that whoever is accepted won't exactly know what they are getting themselves into. I can't put my finger on it, but I have a feeling there will be strange events to come in the upcoming days... weeks... months... and possibly years. Perhaps Asmo- my god- will lend me a vision into the future when he sees fit."

With a quirked brow, Askrel peers over Ezra, admiring his elegant attire. "So it seems we have a natural prophet over here," Askrel prods in light-hearted mockery. "I'll give you a vision of the future." As he speaks, a lithe hand reaches behind his head as if to scratch his back and disapears into the sackcloth pack. His hand re-emerges full of semi-precious gemstones and coins, faintly gleaming in the torchlight of the tavern. Before anyone can get too much an eyeful, he nonchalantly places them back into his pack.

Ezra raises his glass at the sight of the gems. "If riches are included in my vision, I will be sure to tell you. Perhaps I am over thinking it, but I do not believe I can shake the thought from my mind. The last time I had such a feeling, it was the night of my attack." Ezra shivers at the thought, hoping that his prediction of ill omen would not come to pass... but if this was a sign from Asmodeus, then he should finish this task soon... or perhaps it was a sign to stay, and not return home... the future is so cloudy that it was hard to tell.

What? Consequences for drinking? What madness is that? Even if you had said something, I'm not sure K'leck would have believed you. :-P

K'leck looks surprised and slightly awed at Ezra's comment about visions. "Spirits talk to Ezra? What kinds of thing do they say? And do not worry about bandits in here. There many strong people to chase pathetic cowards like that away." He nods confidently, making sure to stand to his full height to appear appropriately threatening towards any would wish to interrupt the merriment with untoward violence.

"Your attack? It sounds like post-traumatic jitters. Strange land. Strange brutes." Askrel pauses to eye the massive native called K'leck."You should be fine as long as you stay on chunky's good side." Thinking about what he just said, and once more looking over K'leck's hulking figure, he gulps a mouthful of saliva down a dry throat and brushes his hair to the side, averting his eyes to the same side.

Ezra gives a small smile, patting K'leck's arm as if he were an old friend. "I thank you. I am sure no bandits will come here, but as my time in Cheliax has shown, sometimes it is not ruffians that we must be wary of... outsiders. Demons, daemons... the forces of the Abyss and Abaddon are always upon us. As for my visions, they come and go with he passing of the moon. They grow stronger as it grows fuller. And once I get my second feat, I will take Extra Revelation, and I will have augury once per night with 90% effectiveness... very nice for this character.

He then turns to Askrel. "Trust me, I am not paranoid... well, maybe a bit, but then again it is hard not to be. No, my visions are from divine forces."

Varian will turn his attention back to Khron, and, in dwarven, ask.
so, I know you said there wasn't much to tell, but I am curious as to why you sought out this guild? surely there were places for you back in your home? Do you seek something the lands of your ancestors could not give you?
