Ea seems thoughful for a moment, after Rallos offer

I suppose proposing a toast to the defeat of Gorloth could be done. And maybe Emarald could join us for a parting glass?

She watches intensely at Grayface

Let's try being human, for once.I can learn, you will see. Isn't knowledge one of my main interest?

"I am not one for goodbyes Ea...our ways part here...farewell and may the gods smile upon you", and, with that, Emerald heads home.

The Juliver Arms, at this relatively early hour, is not especially busy and with a jovial greeting, you are ushered to the comfy seats near the fire. "A cold day to be out...let our fire warm your bones...and a drink maybe?"

I will introduce the replacement character for Emerald at some point whilst you are at the Juliver Arms...recruitment isn't quite closed though

  • Grayface was saddened at Emerald's exodus, but mostly at her change of heart. It was her intriguing green skin and gentle demeanor that had softened his heart at the first encounter at the Juliver. He had been sure that they would be companions for an age to come. Alas, things are not always as they seem. He waved goodbye to her without a word, but with heaviness in his heart.

He also bade Ea goodbye, but knew they would meet again. "We'll see you later then? I imagine we'll be at the Juliver Arms while we rest and recover."

Walking with his two remaining friends, he led the way to the inn. Entering with determination he says, "Gods be praised, yes. We'll take that table there by the hearth and keep the ale flowing. Some hot soup or better yet--some red meat would hit the spot."

As the host ushers the party to the fire, a realization sets in for the sorceress. She doesn't really feel a pressing desire to sit there, like she used to. "I suppose it is a cold day, isn't it," she concludes, before taking the seat furthest from the fire. "Seems like I'm getting used to being in the cold. Who'd have thought I'd let go of Qadira so quickly."

When the ale arrives, she's quick to raise it in a toast. "It's it's been a real honor to have you brave gentlemen leading the way through the Spire. We've had our mishaps, and perhaps one too many pit traps! But incredibly, we've made it out alive, and with some fascinating magical items. We also put an end to that undead creature who fancied himself king. So here's to our success!"

Ea will bring the bones of Gorloth at the temple of Pharasma, and explain lenghtly the nature of their late foe to the priest.

She talks about her idea of burying Gorloth in the local graveyard or somewhere in the temple, as an example for those interested in necromantic magics.

She tries to identify the magical belt they found in Gorloth's loot

Aye....I might need to invest in a pair of wings if i see many more pits. Here's to not dying in the bloody place! Rallos says as he lifts his drink.

Ea does not manage to determine the use / purpose of the magical belt

Whilst Rallos, Grayface and Yasmin enjoy a well-earned drink next to the warming fire, Ea is elsewhere in the Fort; Father Falindor, at the Temple of Silence, listens to Ea’s story and her suggestion of interring Gorloth’s bones within the temple, ”It is well done…and the right thing….Pharasma will usher Gorloth through the boneyard as she does for every soul…our duty is to aid that journey. Return tomorrow morning and we will do this thing together”

As the late afternoon slowly turns into the evening, the sun sinks below the horizon, fires are lit illuminating the roads of the Fort and folk start to drift towards the Juliver Arms. The conversation, like the drink, is free flowing and, as they ask for them, hot meals are brought to tables…

I have asked your new party member to ‘join’ here so we should get things moving again quickly

In the evening, Sister Zalinsel enters the Juliver Arms, her head low, having obviously purchased some new clothes... nearly all in black: a black hat, black boots , black pants and shirt, and a long-sleeved black coat.
    Only her gloves are grey.
Her holy symbol, the spiral of Pharasma, dangles on her samll chest.

Not the kind of thing you wear to seduce someone after a long night of partying and drinking...

Yasmin finds herself surprised by Ea's new appearance. And surprisingly pleased. "Glad you could join us! I like your new outfit. Not quite the flair and color of Kelish garb, but somehow it has a style all its own."

Yasmin pulls out the green crystal at the table. "The more I study this, the more fascinated I am. It seems to be a shard of the Emerald Spire itself. I think we ought to ask around town to see if someone can tell us more. Anyone have a suggestion? Is there a wizard in town? A small, raven-like creature approaches your table, making small clicking noises with his beak. When he sees you all looking at him, he offers a humble bow.

"Greetings. My name is Pertreeko. Am I to understand you have visited, and plan to return to," he leans in closer and lowers his voice, "the Emerald Spire?"

His voice is high and reedy, and he stands at a modest 4 feet tall. His garb is similarly unassuming, made from simple animal hides. Beads in bright red and green colors are lashed to some of his facial feathers, standing out among the otherwise uniform blackness of his face. His voice sounds fairly young.

Hi everyone, GM Zed was kind enough to invite me to the party, I look forward to adventuring with all of you. :)

"Hahaha...HA!...hic!" Gray was more than halfway drunk when the raven-man approached the table. He had never seen such a creature, and when it opened its mouth and spoke, it was too much for the warrior. Realizing suddenly that laughing was rude, but not knowing how to remedy the slight, he pressed on.
"Er...Pertekkio, pleasure to acquaint your meetances" He tried to stare intently with his good eye, but found he couldn't focus on its face. The beads and leathers were peculiar but very cool indeed.

He reaches out a scarred hand to shake, completely oblivious to the notion that the newcomer might not have any "hands" to speak of.

    Know Nature? about Tengus: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22

A cold, emotionless voice comes from the woman in black
Knowledge is always a boon. You can call me Sister Zalinsel.

Ea resumes to drinking some hot beverage, then

Tengu are quite rare. Do you worhip Nature as a whole, as a druid, or some specific aspects of it? Probably things of stone, despite your avian ancestry, if you're interested in the Spire.

    Male Tengu Menhir Savant Druid 4 | HP: 34 AC: 17 Initiative: +2 Fort: 5 Ref: 3 Will: 8

The Tengu nods and smiles at Grayface as he accepts his seat; the avian face of the druid isn't as expressive as a normal human face due to his beak, but you can tell he's smiling from his eyes.

The beads in his feathers click together softly as he turns to address Rallos. "Spiders are to be shown respect, the same as any animal. That said, if any were to try and poison me, I would react as any animal would, and kill it with extreme prejudice. I grew up in the woods local to Fort Inevitable, and I'm very familiar with the dangers of the local wildlife." The avian folds his hands together on the table in front of him. "To that end I have prepared natural magics to ward off poison's effects. You should have little to fear from spiders while I'm around..." he pauses. "I believe the saying goes, 'knock on wood'?" he raps his knuckles on the table hesitantly, looking around to see if he did the saying right.

His eyes glance in Ea's direction when she speaks, blinking as he listens to her question. "Actually, my connection to the winds has always been stronger than the stones or the rivers, though I love all the pieces of the Land that tie it together. The interests of the organization I represent are connected to the ley-lines that intersect in various places of significance around the globe. The Emerald Spire sits atop one such confluence of ley-lines, or so my Order believes. I was dispatched to investigate."

If the waitress notices him, Pertreeko will hail her and ask for a simple ale.

The Halfling barmaid barely raises an eyebrow at the Tengu when he asks for an ale, "A pint of Juliver coming right up...", although there are a few whispers and furtive glances towards Pertreeko from others within the tavern.

Yasmin - Abenard Royst, the person you are mapping the spire for...is a renowned wizard retired from adventuring - he would certainly be a sensible person to talk to about the Glass Cylinder you have found

Fair enough, though we don't have all that much loot from this last haul. Most of the goodies were upgrades which we're currently employing, as opposed to selling or trading. We could probably spare some coin if you had anything in particular you're interested in right away, though I think most of us are relatively short on funds at the moment too!

Yasmin smiles warmly at the Tengu. "The Emerald Spire is full of mysteries. I wouldn't be surprised if it was channeling these ley-lines of yours. If you mean to investigate, then you should definitely come with us. It's a bit hard to tell now, but Grayface is a fierce warrior when he's not drunk. Rallos is deadly with his daggers. And Ea is truly fearless in the face of death. I'm sure your talents as a druid will be of great help. The Spire is a perilous place, though. A couple other scholars went to investigate the spire, and have not been heard from since. Danger lurks in every step."

Yes, we are well behind the wealth curve at the moment. Anything in particular you're looking for? Yasmin has little need for equipment at the moment.

Pertreeko bows his head again. "I am honored that you would choose to have me along." he lifts his mug of Juliver in a toast. "To our new association!" he says, letting his enthusiasm show while avoiding raising his voice too loudly.

Not in particular. I'm a caster, so my need for weapons is minimalized; and I'm a druid, which further reduces the need for armor. I'll keep an eye out for a headband of +2 wisdom or anything that I can wear - like a ring, amulet, or bracelet - that gives AC. A cloak of resistance would fit nicely too.

Fearless? I'm not fearless, Yasmin. It's just that most fear relate to death, and I'm not afraid of dying. Of course, like everyone, I would prefer to die peacefully of old age than after months of torture, some deaths are "better" than others. But Death is natural. It will happen, whatever we do. My main fear is to become an undead like Gorloth, the worst abomination I've meet so far. Getting up from my eternal rest, with an unholy hunger in my wrecked soul... That's what we, priests of Pharasma, have to be afraid of. And it's our sacred duty to try to destroy the restless dead everytime... knowing that, sooner or later we might lose the fight, if we are reckless or too confident in ourselves.

Pertreeko's face is somber - you think, it's somewhat hard to tell - as he sets down his mug. In any event, his voice is grim and serious.

"I have lost those dear to me to the plague of undeath, Ms. Zalinsel. I offer you - all of you - the promise that if you were to ever become stricken by it, I would not rest until you were properly destroyed. I hope that you would do the same for me. Pertreeko nods solemnly and puts his beak back into his mug a bit. "They did not suffer in undeath for long, I will say that." He gives Ea a weak smile that barely touches his eyes before turning his attention back to his mug.

The table is silent for a moment. After a brief pause, Pertreeko sighs and says, "I must away for the evening. My Order will want an update on my status. Will we be making for the Crystal Spire at first light?"

30% tax on 34.5 gp is 10 gp, 4 sp, leaving us with liquid assets of 24 gp + 120 gp + 50gp emerald.

Total is now 194 gp. That is 48 gp, 5 sp each, for the original 4 party members. This does not include any magic items, or any money we might have coming to us from Royst. Is my math correct? Any problems with liquefying these assets?

  • I just remembered Pertreeko mentioning a share of loot to get "caught up", but as you can see this is a meager haul, as far as liquid assets go. Even if we split it 5 ways, it wouldn't do much at all to get Pertreeko "caught up", if I may be so bold. RolePlaying-wise, Gray wouldn't be keen on splitting any loot with a stranger, unless that stranger fought beside him.
I have no intention of speaking for the group, but from a personal RP perspective, and more to the point-- considering how little funds we have to share, I don't vote for splitting the loot 5 ways at this juncture.
Of course future-gotten gains would be split, because all 5 of us will be participating.
Am I off base here? The last thing I want to do is be divisive about a small amount of gold, but I hope you all will understand my logic.
Out of character, I'm totally down with hooking a brotha up, but none of us are particularly well geared yet so I don't see that there is much separation here.
    Thoughts?

I am not opposed to cutting Petreeko in on the loot. I mean, as long as it is for the good of the party, like if he could use a decent second weapon or somesuch, that's cool.

Rallos finishes the last of his drink and heads to the bar.

Have a good night, all. I think I shall sleep good tonight. I have a newfound appreciation for beds. Innkeeper? A room please. And extra pillows, if you happen to have any.

paying 3gp for room and food/drink....Rallos doesn't have the drinking problem Gray has.....hehe.

That's fine. I have no problem with being a pauper. As a druid, I'm uniquely equipped to not be equipped. Live off the land, cast Shillelagh on my simple club, beat zombies in the face. Let us hope that our benefactor, Zed, is the type of GM from whom loot flows freely.

After a welcome night in the warmth of the Inn, you head towards the residence of Abernard Royst, resident Mage within the Fort and discrete co-sponsor of your expedition. Whereas the first time you met him, he seemed gruff and unwelcoming...this time he invites you into his house. A roaring fire (with distinctly arcane flames burning violet) warms the room...

"Welcome...welcome...tell what you have found? Did you encounter anything unusual? And....maybe you have a map for me?", he smiles as you hand him the parchment and, from nowhere, a pouch appears in his palm, "Two hundred gold...and, if you can descend further, there is more where that came from..."

"And...did you find anything of note in these 'cellars'...and treasures?"

If you show the belt that you found on Gorloth's table (Ea currently has it), he identifies it as a Belt of Mighty Belt Constitution +2

If you show the scrolls that you found in the creepy dissection room, Abernard identifies them as Scrolls of Fireball and Fly

Seeing the Horn slung against Yasmin's waist, Roust peers closely..."Is that? Is that a Horn of Fog? Tell me, would you sell it? It looks to be a relic from ancient times...maybe we could come to a mutually acceptable price? I have no desire for the Lady Commander to be aware of my collection...so maybe I can be a little flexible"

The PRD lists the Horn of Fog as 2,000 GP

Pertreeko is waiting outside the Inn when you leave in the morning, having spent the night under the stars in the surrounding woods. Despite the early morning hour his demeanor is bright and cheerful.

Pertreeko bows before Abernard when he meets him and offers the same introduction that he offered the party the previous evening. Having no loot to sell, identify, or collect, he merely stands politely off to one side and remains unobtrusive, his eyes remaining open and inquisitive as he scans the room.

  • "Mornin' Pertekkio!" says Grayface as he sees the pint-sized Tengu waiting outside in the crisp morning air. "Cold air is great for waking up, isn't it?

Gray asks Royst about the local bandits, "Do you know anything of the local bandits? We have been tasked to bring back the head of their female leader, but as of yet we have only encountered goblins and undead inside the tower. Any advice you could provide would be helpful."

After obtaining the 200 gp from the man, Gray makes does some light arithmetic and counts out 5 portions of gold. Though this tengu character was new, Grayface felt that if was so keen on joining them at the tower, then he should probably be as provisioned as possible. Handing everyone a bag with 78 gold, 8 silver in turn, the warrior says "Here is the money from the swords we sold, and our recent payment from Royst, split five ways. Pertreeko, please take this and spend it as you see fit. I hope you're ready for battle when we arrive at the tower."

Yasmin detaches the Horn from her belt, holding it in front of her. "It's quite a remarkable device, isn't it? And its magic does not seem to exhaust with use. It's not something we would part with easily. Would you like to try it?" Yasmin had spent more than enough time at the bazaars in Qadira to know how to entice a potential buyer into offering a good price.

Pertreeko graciously accepts the bag from Grayface and nods. "I will do all I can to honor the trust you have shown me, human," he murmurs. "Talanin asha."

    Elven:
No direct translation, but encompasses "thank you, my worthy associate" and "I will repay this debt".

"It is a fine piece...sure, you can find horns such as these in the big cities...but something this old...you can only find in the ancient places", Abernard has a gleam in his eye, "...maybe there is more to be found...for now though, shall we say eleven hundred? And, let's keep this between you and I...I'd rather the Lady Commander didn't know about this...and I'm sure you'd rather avoid paying the levy"

    Sense Motive DC15:
Abernard Royst is clearly less than enamoured with Lady Commander Drovust

Yasmin frowns in disappointment as Roust offers a mere 1100 gold. "Come now, this is a one-of-a-kind relic, not some set of rusty longswords to be sold in bulk to the a weaponsmith. The horn is worth two thousand easily! Of course, there is the thirty percent levy on that amount, so we would take 1400 gold, and *ahem* rely on you to pay the remaining levy to the Lady Commander in due course." Yasmin wasn't about to openly admit to evading the tax, but she definitely intended to benefit from it. "Oh, and one more thing - it would be really great if you could explain to us what this does." She takes out the green crystal.

Royst takes a sharp intake of breath when he sees what Yasmin shows him, "Twelve Hundred and I'll tell you what you have in your hand...final offer!!!"
