Shackled City (Pathfinder) - GM_Chris

Game Master Chris Shannon 719

This will be the Shackled City adventure path using the Pathfinder rule set. However, the existing deities (i.e. St. Cuthbert, Pelor, Wee Jas) will not be converted to similar Golarion gods.

Dragonhide armor.

Here's my logic. It takes a dragon 4 times larger (Colossal) than Finneas to make plate armor. Based on the weight charts in the equipment chart. A large creature is only twice as large as Finneas, while a colossal creature is 16 times larger. The worst case scenario would be to require 8 large dragons to equal one colossal dragon. That's a lot of dragons, but seems accurate by RAW. I on the other hand like the concept so am going to cut it in half to 4 large dragons. So, two more large dragons or one huge dragon to finish the armor.

Sound good?

Medium ×1 ×1 ×2 ×1
Large ×2 ×2 ×4 ×2
Huge ×4 ×5 ×8 ×5
Gargantuan ×8 ×8 ×16 ×8
Colossal ×16 ×12 ×32 ×12

That'll work. Of course that requires us to find another huge dragon. Is there a way to use dragon hide mixed with metal? Mechanically I'm not getting any benefit from mixed dragon hide (and I'm not looking for any) but I need to start upgrading Finn's AC while I'm still alive to enjoy it. :D

Updated the treasure spreadsheet.

Owen got a new gaming mouse I was using yesterday that has 10 buttons and evidently one of them types 'e' when you bump it. This is why the old sheet is corrupted. I think I fixed it, but let me know.

I respect your decision. The rules say the following:

"One dragon produces enough hide for a single suit of masterwork hide armor for a creature one size category smaller than the dragon. By selecting only choice scales and bits of hide, an armorsmith can produce one suit of masterwork banded mail for a creature two sizes smaller, one suit of masterwork half-plate for a creature three sizes smaller, or one masterwork breastplate or suit of full plate for a creature four sizes smaller. In each case, enough hide is available to produce a light or heavy masterwork shield in addition to the armor, provided that the dragon is Large or larger. If the dragonhide comes from a dragon that had immunity to an energy type, the armor is also immune to that energy type, although this does not confer any protection to the wearer."

While at Skie's, Toffitt also wishes to buy or order a formula alembic:

Formula Alembic:

200 gp
This magically-augmented alchemical device distills a potion or alchemist extract into the knowledge needed to create its formula. By gently heating a potion or extract in the alembic for 1 hour, the device creates a few drops of magical liquid. If consumed by an alchemist, this liquid gives him knowledge of the potion’s or extract’s formula, as if it were an extract he recorded in his formula book. This knowledge lasts for 24 hours. He may scribe this formula in his formula book in the normal fashion.

Using the alembic does not harm the potion, but the process makes it nearly boiling hot (it cools normally). The alembic can only distill the knowledge of formulas on the alchemist extract list (for example, it cannot turn a potion of a cleric-only spell into something an alchemist can learn).

Yes, thanks for the summary!

Toffitt will sell the Belt of Strength +2 and put the money in the group's coffers — unless someone else wanted the belt. Speak now, or...

So, Toffitt's shopping list now includes:

180 (200 gp - 10%) - alembic
3,600 (4,000 gp - 10%) - belt of dex +2
300 (375 gp - 20%) - scroll of remove blindness/deafness
300 (375 gp - 20%) - scroll of remove disease
324 (360 gp - 10% (90 gp x 4)) - materials to write remove blind/deaf, remove disease, heroism and
displacement to Toffitt's formula book (using alembic to learn displace & heroism)
270 gp (300 - 10%) - materials for 2 potions of invisibility
270 gp (300 - 10%) - materials for 2 potions of darkvision
240 gp (300 - 20%) - oil of align weapon (1)

=5,484 gp (5,882.94 - 5,484 = 398.94 gp balance)
*edited per Chris's discount reminder

I'd love to buy another boro bead lvl 1, which would be used to keep Finneas supplied with Shield extracts. But I'd have to dip into the party coffers or ask him to pay, at this point. Toffitt has to spend money to become a better doctor...

I can also angle to keep an extract of barkskin prepared, which could boost Finn's natural armor. That might eventually make a Lvl 2 boro bead (4,000 gp) helpful.

Don't forget.

Discounts party has earned:

20% off clerical potions/scrolls from St. Cuthbert in stock (-10% chance per level).

10% discount on items from Skie's. 10% more earned when selling items there.

Go Vote!

Just so you're not feeling so lost, there are currently several possible routes for the adventure. Written in an installment format, there is a definite intended linear story arc. However, at this time there are at least two legitimate paths to pursue that would be out of order. If the party pursues one then I'll just scale the encounters. Also, an event will occur if the party waits long enough. This is built in roleplay, investigation, crafting, sandbox time, so don't be too frustrated if your initial inquiries don't yield immediate results.

- Tunnels underneath Orak's bathhouse that had the vampire bugbear lead to side of Cauldron. Party finds campsite outside the tunnels.4147
- Stealing of wands of control water by former guard Triel, a member of the Ebon Triad 4572
- Room with slaad where something magical was being built 5315

- Celeste (who began the adventure with you) shows up after attack and connects you with Splintershield
- Matching invisible tattoos on Finneas's face 5581 and Splintershield's face 7254
- Erinyes doesn't kill you
- Half-orcs added to city guard
- And other stuff I won't spoon
feed (including the two possible routes noted in above post)

Potential sources of information
- Aralynn - commune
- Star of Justice with Jenya
- Various merchants
- Various churches

I've dropped a few clues to wet your appetite, but figuring it out is really beyond the party at this point. Your supposed to be left with that frustrating feeling that things are going on beyond your comprehension. There are a couple things you've missed or not pursued, but I'm afraid if I put anything else in you might actually figure it out and then we'd have to skip ahead about 5 chapters.

Dryant wrote:

Forgive the SoD-like effect. Not sure this qualifies as jerky or not. I think the point of this encounter is the fire...and these elementals aren't bosses.

It takes two rounds and a 4th lvl spell to have a 10% chance of preventing attacks....which isn't too silly, I hope.

Let me begin with I don't mind in this case. These things are brutes and will likely kill someone if not put in check. They're only 2d6+4, but two attacks and 15' reach add up with their HP and DR. And you're burning a 4th level spell.

Not sure how you're calculating 10%. It's a standard action for a DC 20 will save for a 20% chance, 5% if you're going to set it up with a hex.

Anyway, in regards to the save or die spells, I think my problem with ones such as these is I think the designers still don't see them as save or die. Pathfinder's addition of a new save each round helps, but there is no leveling. At about CR 10 SR becomes more regular and more of a problem. It's not so much the turn lost attacking a lot of times, but it's the free round where players can move into flank and hit it for half it's hit points without fear of reprisal. Then, after having it's guts spilled everywhere, the creature isn't allowed to come out of the daze.

Almost anything that is going to be targeted with a SoD spell is usually by itself, so then it's just toast. Unless its truly a save or die effect (not just paralysis), if a creature uses SoD on someone then the affected party member at least has the other party members to help it out. The effect cuts the party's effectiveness by 20% for a party of 5, not 100% (or this case 50% for two big monsters).

It might be a 4th level spell, but unless you're in a dungeon crawl with pressure how many 4th level spells do you use in a day? If the dungeon only has one CR 10 encounter per day, you only need the spell once.

Anyway, I ramble and as I said at the beginning don't mind in this case.

I think we agree with the big picture. I'm overly mindful of such things.

I get 10% because its first Will Save was +5:

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13 - Failed save vs Dyrant

So, it would succeed on a 19 or 20. However, if its Will is only +4, I'm probably a bad player who should have cast the spell without the hex round.

If by good you mean the most strategically advantageous thing, it'd actually be more advantageous for Finn to advance, ready an action to attack an adjacent, living foe once Toffitt's down, and then let Toffitt take his full attack. But of course that's not how the characters in question operate.

As a general rule, I do think it's best *not* to focus fire in the way Atol's suggesting, unless there's one common foe, particularly in this case where there are several foes surrounding one PC. But hey, I'm the guy who likes to provoke attacks of opportunity every round. ;-p
